"Lady Lareci, I understand your mission is critical but... I have a favor I need to ask."

That was how the conversation started. The one who said that phrase hadn't introduced themselves, they didn't even try to spark small talk with Kaori to ease her into the subject. Around them, the sound of sailors, pirates, and town guardsmen all making merry in a drunken state was drowning out the sound of Kaori's sigh of discontent. She'd come to this pub because the food was good, the drinks were great, and the company was always amazing. It was the kind of place where she could feel at ease, and not think about business. Kaori's mask did well to hide her annoyed expression, and her voice contained no traces of being on edge. "It's rude to ask a favor from someone you haven't introduced yourself to." Kaori said calmly, her voice louder than normal so her to-be contractor could hear her. "My apologies..." the woman said, followed by "My name is Angelique. I'm a member of the counsel for Midi's cross nations union."

Kaori had a slight bit of alarm from the fact that this woman was with Midi's government, or rather, a sub-section of it. Kaori wasn't too keen on helping the law since they normally found some way to weasel their way out of keeping up their end. She also didn't like that this woman know who she was, and where she would be; much to Kaori's fortune, her mask hid all of this away. "Evidently I have no need to introduce myself." Kaori said in a cold tone. She used her foot to push the chair across from her out, implying the woman had permission to sit with her.

Angelique: "Indeed. The Lareci clan is well known for its brutality in combat, as well as several assignments for the well being of Midi."

Kaori: "The Lareci clan is known for existing in the afterlife. There are no tasks in this world they perform."

Angelique: "While one wolf exists, the pack may yet survive."

Kaori: "The wolf is the strength of the pack, the pack is the strength of the wolf. What is a wolf without a pack?"

Angelique: "An Alpha preparing to howl."

Kaori: "And if there's nothing to howl to?"

Angelique: "Then howl to let your voice be known."

Kaori: "What will it take to get you out of my pub?"

Angelique put on a gentle smile at Kaori's question. She said "A favor." and slid an envelope over to Kaori's side of the table. Kaori opened it and said "Understood." in a very calm tone. It was something that Kaori would have to take care of at a later time, but it was something that she would've taken on even without the conversation with Angelique. It was the beginning of what would be an interesting day for the masked warrior.

After her soured meal, Kaori had returned to the castle to begin doing some research. She had heard a great deal about the artifacts hidden around the eastern lands and personally wanted to discover more about them. She was in the library, sitting at the same desk she normally sat at with a stack of books next to her. The books were all about folk tales, legends, myths, cryptids, and fairy tales that had been passed down for generations. Many in the guild knew not to interrupt Kaori while reading, few knew the reason why...

In the midst of the merry-making and alcoholic enthusiasm, Benjamin was loudly singing out of tune with the rest of the patrons of this fine establishment. He had already had a few beers and was clearly intoxicated, though not so much that he would black out any time soon. However, just before the green-haired gunfighter could guzzle down another pint of the swill being served to him, a couple of voices caught his inebriated ears, one familiar, the other not so much. His face soured for a brief moment, not entirely pleased by the prospect of someone bringing up business in the middle of a bar. He had always found such things to be in poor taste, believing bars to be places for the exclusive use of amusement. His amusement to be exact, though, the same rule applied to everywhere else in his personal opinion. Even so, this talk of such things in such a place at such a time in such a way was something the man didn't like. Not one bit.

Exiting the pub not long after Kaori, the drunken and armed gentleman of questionable mental stability sauntered on out into the public, somehow managing to stumble his way back to the guildhall. What's more, in what some might see as too coincidental a fashion, Benjamin barged through the door of the library, humming the tune he had been butchering earlier at the pub. "Hey there...uh...Cow-ree, yeah?" He slurred in a manner that somehow managed to suggest he would have spelled the name wrong. "I heard you were talkin' to this lady over at the waterin' hole. Well, iss more like I heards you talkin, but..." He trailed off as he noticed her choice of literature, stumbling over to take a peek over her shoulder. "Hey, watcha readin'?" He asked obnoxiously. "Hey, I promise not to tell nobody if its porn or somethin' like that."

Upon detecting the scent of alcohol in the air, Kaori had assumed that she was either followed by another drunk man who was about to lose his ability to have children, or it was someone who'd just taken a bath in booze. From the intoxicated voice that echoed across, it was neither a man out of his league, nor someone foolish enough to bathe in alcohol. Instead, it was an individual the young woman had seen around the castle, but not spoken with regularly. His first impression for the day left Kaori somewhat offended as her name was fairly simple to pronounce, and the man had already successfully messed that up. Kaori remained silent and turned the page of the book she was reading instead of beating the man with the book as she normally would.

The story she was reading was a tale about a sword that was said to contain the power of the stars. It was crafted by the celestial king in his younger days, and enchanted as he got stronger. The blade eventually got shattered, but the hilt remained; so the king reforged the blade and made it even more powerful than before. The sword had seven powers, each listed under seven stars that formed the image of the big dipper on the blade. However, the blade was stolen by a rogue spirit who took it apart and scattered its components across the world. The heart of the sword, the hilt, the guard, the pegs, and the sheathe were all placed in a different location.

Upon Kaori's attention coming back to the man who she was surprised was still lingering, he was asking about the book she was reading. His next words, had he not been drunk, would've been his last. Kaori reached into her tool belt and pulled out a small candy, still wrapped. She set it on the table before returning to her book. "Lady Ceostra gave me that. Supposedly it's some sort of candy, but I anticipate it to taste like carrots. Either way, eat it and then try pronouncing my name again." Kaori said with a cold tone. The tone she used was the one a noble used when she was trying not to sound condescending, but was failing just a bit at it. If Benjamin would eat the candy, he'd notice two things; it actually tasted like carrots, and that he was no longer drunk. If he chose not to eat it, Kaori would take a book from the pile and shove it into Benjamin's stomach without bothering to look at him. Afterwards, she would tell him to make himself useful and let her know when he comes across a fairy shaped talisman.

Benjamin sighed as the candy was placed on the table, one of many signs he had failed to elicit a sufficiently entertaining reaction from the little ninja. "You're no fun at all, are you?" He managed to get out before a book was thrust into his gut, a turn of events that would have knocked him over had he been well and truly drunk. He'd been wandering the worst establishments surrounding the cursed lands and destroyed many a bar in his time, even going so far as to drink liquor made within the cursed lands themselves. In other words, it took far more than a few beers to truly intoxicate the insufferable bounty hunter, even if he enjoyed putting on the act.

On that note, he sat down with a disappointed and incredibly bored expression on his face, turning through the pages with little interest. "Guy with shiny sword kills lizard, old lady gets eaten by Fido, dame at the ball breaks a shoe..." He lazily listed off different fairy tales as he skimmed them over, keeping an eye out for Kaori's talisman. "So, Ri..." He didn't stop turning pages as he misspoke her name. "What is it that brought you to this quaint little town, to say nothing of the wizard's guild you've managed to join?" There wasn't much excitement or intent behind his question, mostly asked to pass the time in a vain effort to uncover something interesting about his new cohort.

Nonchalantly sifting through the pages of the book, reading them word for word at a speed most people would actually call 'skimming' instead of reading; Kaori raised an eyebrow at the question. "I apologize mister Kelly, but you seem to be mistaken. I'm no more a member of this clan, than you're a member of mine." she said with a calm, cold, but respectfully condescending tone. "My presence is merely for the sake of learning magic, and repaying Lady Ceostra for saving my life... twice." she stated, clarifying why she was in the guild despite not being a member. While it was true that she had a guild stamp on her that was concealed by her clothing, she didn't consider herself a member. She didn't grow up in this clan, nor did she receive permission to perform acts to bestow honor on the clan.

Kaori closed the book she was reading, mumbling 'useless' as she set it aside and grabbed another from the mountain around her. "Besides, I'm someone born of death. I bathe the field of battle in blood, and show mercy only to those who guard my back. I could never be a member of this clan that frowns on such actions." she sounded dark, and filled with edge that was extremely unlike her normal state. She continued turning the pages while memorizing each and every word on them. There were curious items that the fioran ancestors kept, many of which would be regarded as useless trash and thrown out in Kaori's clan. Many of the items literally were useless trash, like an ass's jaw bone that was enchanted to kill a man with one touch. Kaori wondered why something so fragile, and why not something practical... like an actual weapon? "These people are strange..." she mumbled the words through her mask, a phrase that she'd come to repeat several times a week at this point. From preserving corpses rather than burning them, to using the most pointless of objects as weapons, down to being afraid to kill a man without the strongest of reasons; the people of Fiore and this clan were strange. Then again, many would think the same of Kaori. "What purpose do you have for being here mister Kelly? You hardly seem like a scholar, and I sense little conviction from you." she asked coldly, but still respectfully. He was sober enough to help her with finding the item she wanted, so she would at least humor his thirst for conversation.

Benjamin simply smiled and set the book he was holding down on the table and pulled a small pouch from his coat pocket, along with a small slip of paper and an unlit match. "You really think highly of these folks, don't you?" He asked as he set these items on the table, opening the pouch and letting the smell of tobacco enter the air. "You so sure they're so innocent? You think none of them have blood on their hands." Taking a measured pinch of the dried, shredded plant and placing it in the cent of the square slip of paper, his fingers moved with a the dexterity of both a skilled and experienced shooter as well as an avid practitioner of the process currently underway. "The self degrading types always assume that other people are innocent and pure; makes it all seem worth it I suppose..." Portioning out the tobacco evenly across the paper, he then partially rolled it around the substance into the shape of a cylinder, leaving one end of it loose. After licking the loose end of the thin paper as a form of makeshift glue, he pressed it down against the now complete cigarette. "One thing you oughta learn about Fiorans, they're awfully good at tucking away their darker secrets behind a happy smile." Now ready to smoke, he placed the flammable apparatus between his lips and took hold of the match he retrieved from his coat earlier, striking it off the table.

"As for me..." He muttered through his cigarette, holding the lit match up to the end and taking a few quick puffs to pull oxygen through the gaps in the shredded tobacco, creating a sustained burn starting at the loose stubs poking out of the paper and then igniting the edges of the paper itself. After taking one more long drag and snuffing out the match with a quick flick of his wrist, he blew the smoke into the air around him, filling the room with the scent of tobacco as he dropped the dead match stick on the table to be discarded at a later time. "Honestly, I just love a good show." Benjamin said as he held the cigarette in between his index and middle finger, smoke trailing off the end like a silver ribbon. "Don't much have anything else to my name. Far as I'm concerned, the serious stuff just ain't worth the trouble. And from what I saw of that little fiasco with Basilisk Fang, there's no end of fun around this joint." Now that his cigarette was complete, he casually flipped the pages of the book on the table, occasionally taking another drag.

"Now I got a question." He stated bluntly, as though she would hear it regardless of whether she wanted to or not. "What's so important about this trinket? I'm pretty sure this isn't the guild that's obsessed with fairies and you don't strike me as the sort that likes jewelry. 'Least not after all that blood bath talk."

From Kaori's mask would come a small, very short, muffled 'kek' that was obviously a laugh that she was trying her hardest to stifle. Unfortunately for her, the comment was simply too much and she slowly began laughing. After a couple failed attempts at not doing it, she had her hand over where a mouth should be on her mask and she was hunched over the book laughing. "I'm-" she began saying but was interrupted by the absurdity of his comment. "I apologize..." she said before stuffing down more laughter. "...Mister Kelly." she finished her earlier statement with her laughter beginning to dumb down a bit. "It seems you misunderstand me." Kaori said before finally turning towards Benjamin with a more friendly tone. "I may be a monster, but I'm still a girl. I just have have strange preferences."

Kaori was wearing a different hair style today from her normal one. Normally she wore pig tails since it was easy to wear and it didn't hinder combat with a veil of snow. Today, since she had no intentions of getting into fights, Kaori's hair was let loose with a braid wrapping around her head to look like a pseudo tiara. Where the two braids converged, they formed a single length of hair that dangled elegantly in the middle of the back of her head. Kaori pulled back some of her hair that was covering her ear to reveal a single earing in the lobe of her ear. It was heart shaped with a bright pink ruby in the middle cut to the shape of a heart. "It doesn't matter the type, color, or size of the dragon. It'll always hide a chest of treasures in its den." Kaori commented, relating the dragon to herself. A decent comparison since both are easily misunderstood, and both labeled as being monsters for following instinct.

She began reading through another book while explaining. "This clan yields no benefit from owning the artifact in question. Were it anything of substance I'd be searching in history books, or things that are proven to be correct. Humans have associated rare, or pretty things with being powerful. There was a group who thought a sword made their king a fantastic, nearly undefeatable warrior. They never took into account that their leader might actually have a great deal of skill with that sword. A man's hair made him capable of slaughtering a thousand men rather than him being abnormally strong. When his wife cut it, he lost the fight; but no one considered the possibility of him being too distracted by his hair being cut to actually fight properly. Perhaps this amulet is in a work of mythology since there's no practical reason for historians to draw attention to it."

Benjamin's grin widened at the sound of laughter, glad that the person he was sharing a conversation with wasn't in a perpetually sour mood. If there was anything the man hated, it was people that took things far too seriously. He'd had to deal with plenty of that sort from the Rune Knights, one of the many reasons he resigned from that organizations of stiffs. "Good to know that your full of surprises." He said, eyes still squinted as they usually were. "I really can't stand boring, predictable types." It wasn't long before his cigarette began to reach the end of its life, prompting him to snuff it out in the pile of ashes that had formed on the table. As he did so, he suddenly stopped turning the pages of the book, sliding it over to Kaori without turning his head to look at it.

"This what your looking for?" He asked as if to indicate the page he had left open. "You know you shouldn't knock those old stories." A single, yellow colored eye fully opened and peeked out from under from the brim of his hat. "There more often true than you might think. At least in my experience."

Benjamin held up a book with a picture of a necklace. The figure dangling from it was a dryad; which, while technically is a fairy, it wasn't the one Kaori was looking for. However, as Kaori was about to tell him it was wrong, a folded slip of paper fell out from between the next set of pages and landed on the bench between Benjamin and Kaori. Out of curiosity, Kaori picked up the page and unfolded it to begin reading its contents. It was an advertisement for an old job that never got completed. The one hiring was trying to get someone to escort him through a mansion of sorts so he could collect some rare item at the end. Kaori's eyes focused on the part that explained he was a collector of rare items, and figured he might be useful to her. "He might have what I'm looking for..." Kaori said in a semi intrigued tone. She didn't know that the job was still unfinished, but she did want to go to his place and ask if he had the necklace she wanted.

"Mister Kelly, would you mind accompanying me to visit this collector? Lady Ceostra doesn't trust me heading out alone due to..." Kaori paused mid sentence before saying "... reasons ..." with a bit of awkward mystery to the elaborate explanation. If he agreed, Kaori would recommend using her motorcycle since it was a fast, and efficient mode of transportation. She also insisted on leaving today, which was only delayed by the two hours it took for her to get ready. By the time she was ready, she had her hair tied in twin tails, and was armed to the teeth with explosives, her sword, tactical equipment, a bow, and a set of arrows made of pure steel. If Benjamin agreed to using her bike, he'd find the ride to be extremely windy as they went down the road at 75, even if the signs suggested a slower speed, but the bike itself made nearly no noise due to the nuclear fusion engine (as oppose to a combustion engine).

Kaori & Benjamin: The Idol(Mirror Mask): A Rank: Private Empty Re: Kaori & Benjamin: The Idol(Mirror Mask): A Rank: Private

Post by Benjamin 14th August 2017, 2:52 am

Benjamin tilted his head as the piece of paper fell out of the book in his hand, sneaking around behind Kaori and all but reading the request from over her shoulder. "I think I might've heard of this guy." He said, nonchalantly despite his position. "He even pays for people to go out in the cursed lands, if you'll believe he takes stuff from out that way." What Benjamin hadn't mentioned was that he had in fact done business with this collector, mainly due to his own extensive experience in regards to the curse lands. Of course, this negligence was not at all intentional and there was absolutely no malevolent purpose behind it, the gunfighter incapable of such motives. He had simply not felt there any purpose in stating this fact, more specifically that such an act did not produce any form of fun or entertainment for him.

"Sure, I can come along." He said, maintaining his smile, a pleasant hum in his voice. "Might be fun to head out that way." As Kaori went off to prepare, the former bounty hunter simply rolled another cigarette, lit said cigarette, disassembled his pistol, and wiped down each individual part that did't require a screwdriver to unravel with an old cloth. By the time Kaori returned, he was down one more cigarette's worth of tobacco and his pistol was fully reassembled, complete with a slightly glossier finish. With any and all necessary and/or unnecessary preparations out of the way, the two headed out to the ninja's nuclear powered motorcycle, to the sight of which Ben let out a long whistle. Sitting on the spot behind Kaori's seat, he left both his legs on one side of the bike as thought he were sitting on a normal chair, rather than straddling the vehicle like a normal, sane, well adjusted human being would. As the absurdly fast bike sped down the road, Benjamin showed now sign of disturbance on the part of the wind, as though the laws of this worlds physics were simply ignoring him or at the very least cutting him an extraordinary discount. While one might expect his hat to be lost to the enormous amount of air rushing past the duo, the accessory sat comfortably on his head as though it were bound to the spot by some otherworldly force. Before they managed to exit Hargeon, Benjamin reached his right hand out and swiped a fresh mug of ale out of the hand of a bystander along the way, causing the poor man to curse a world in which his beer was stolen before he could get the first sip.

"Ah, that's a fine brew," Ben moaned as he took a long gulp of the alcoholic beverage, a layer of foam on his upper lip. "Nice to get a drink on the road like this, does the heart good and all that." Upon the completion of his fit of rambling, the drunk turned back his head and rapidly drained the mug of it's contents, tossing it behind the motorcycle as it sped along and wiping off his lips on his sleeve. Unfortunately, the mug maintained a great deal of the momentum gained from its rather brief trip, causing it to collide with the back of some poor fools head and knock them out cold.

Eventually, or rather, quite soon after departing, the two emissaries of Lamia Scale arrived at the collectors abode, the gunfighter hopping off the back of the bike as though he were arriving at an amusement park. All but prancing to the door, Benjamin gingerly rapped his knuckle on the door, as though he were a chauffeur here to pick up his passenger. As quickly as the door opened, just a enough to for the owner to get a peek at his visitors, it was nearly pulled shut. Before this denial of entry could be completed, Benjamin's black boot found itself it between the wooden barrier and it's frame, keeping it jammed open just enough for him to reach in and undo the chain latch on the inside. After that was accomplished, forcing the door open was child's play, as the building's owner was no warrior and the green haired loud-mouth was stronger than his lanky frame would suggest. "Bobby!" Ben exclaimed as though he were greeting a long lost relative, his smile ever present as always. "How kind of you to let us in for tea! You always were the generous sort of guy." He turned his head towards his current companion, intent on dragging her into the conversation as well. "Isn't he just the best?" Not waiting for a response from Kaori or any sort of response from the person who's home he was currently invading, Benjamin let himself in and looked about the place. The entryway, along with the rest of the building, was filled with relics of all kinds, either hung from the walls, resting on pedestals, or enshrined in protective glass casing. "Ah, um...Benjamin, wasn't it?" The somewhat short, timid looking man said, his eyes darting back and forth between Mr. Kelly and the many priceless artifacts throughout the room. "Um, actually...actually, my name is Edward." Meanwhile, the intruder began looking over an urn, likely hundreds of years older than anyone in the room. "Oh, Bobby-boy," he said merrily. "You're such a funny lad. The cheery young soul I came here with should be able to give the details."

As amusing as it was to watch Benjamin Kelly stop the man from shutting the door in their faces, as well as completely disregard any form of personal space the man may have had; Kaori managed to hold back any and all urges to laugh. As Kaori's turn to speak came around, the white haired clan leader stepped up and said "Mister Edward." in a calm voice, causing the man to relax slightly, feeling that Kaori was a more reasonable person to talk to. "I am Kaori Lareci, head of the Lareci clan of Midi. It is with great regret I must inform you that your set of rarities is incomplete, and that you don't have the item I'm after." she said with a respectfully condescending tone. Kaori pulled the job noticed from her sleeve and handed it to the man, letting him take it. "However, that does not equate to us having no further business with you. Tell me Mister Edward, has this task been completed yet?" she asked in an equally respectful and condescending tone.

While he didn't have what Kaori needed, he did have some rare items that she could take and use as bartering chips. If she did the job with him, the man might provision one such item to Kaori; which she could then use as a stepping stone to the one she was after. That, and she didn't want to feel like she'd wasted such a long trip so getting paid would at least make her feel like she accomplished something. Edward had told Kaori that no one would take the job since he wanted to be there, and no one wanted to be charged with keeping him safe. "I'm more than capable of safeguarding you. Mister Kelly is capable of doing something useful, though I don't know what that is." Kaori's tone wasn't so much condescending with the statement as it was being truthful. Edward commented that she shouldn't insult her partner so casually, to which Kaori replied "It wasn't an insult. I honestly don't know Mister Kelly's capabilities, so I can't say what he's useful for or not."

Edward had allowed the two of them to escort him through the haunted castle under the condition that Benjamin Kelly stayed as far from him as possible, and Kaori as close. Kaori had no issues with the conditions since she could attack from most ranges anyways. The man had given Kaori a map that showed the safest route to get to the mansion, as well as the fastest route. The safe one had the group go around the forest on a path merchants and travelers used. The fast one lead straight through a forest that was known for containing bandits, cultists, dark mages, lions, and tigers, and bears. "Oh my..." Kaori commented sarcastically, finishing off the reference that even people from Midi had heard a dozen times. She turned to Benjamin Kelly and said "Mister Kelly, which path would you prefer? Our client isn't entitled to an option since he's asking for our service. I have no qualms with either path since I'd be nearly invisible in a forest environment, and a safe path has nothing to be wary of."
