And while you are sitting indoors
waiting for the storm to pass
I will be outside dancing in the rain

It was time for a certain someone’s exam, or so she had heard today as she was sorting through her paperwork. It was a rather exciting time, not just for Mega, but for Astrid too. This will be the first exam she has given since becoming an ace of the guild. A rather big occasion. Her first time giving an exam… Her first act of being an ace beside climbing the endless mountain of paperwork. Although maybe she was getting a little too excited, like this day was about her. It was not. It was the day Mega began the second stage of his adventure. This was his day… But the light mage could not help but get probably even more excited about it then he was, like a child on their birthday. Giddy and anxious to witness the end results.
She wanted the exam to be perfect, so after calling around to cash in some favors she eventually found something exam worthy. Just in time too. If she had not called these specific people near that exact moment, the opportunity would have been non existent. It was like it was meant to be! Or, so it seemed like to her.
Retracting the landline phone from her ear the dragon slayer plopped it back down upon the receiver and without a fault in her movements opened one of the many drawers from her desk beside her, pulling out a fresh sheet of notebook paper along with some fresh ink and a long, orange feather pen. Inching her way closer to the desk and dipping the tip of the pen into the black ink Astrid began to write out a letter to the young boy, explaining all the details he would need to know for this exam.
Lark, who was positioned leaning against the wall adjacent to the ace, moving her deep blue optics to look at the girl after daydreaming, gazing longingly at the patterns in the ceiling for the past couple minutes. Using her weight to push herself off the wall she girl stretched out her tired joints before noticing the girl was finally onto something. She walked to the edge of the desk, propping herself up to sit on the side, legs fitting over each other as she watched the girl write intently.
“Figure something out?” The she-phoenix’s thick Russian voice asked questioningly, though quieted herself as she quickly realized Astrid was on a roll with her writing, therefore probably did not hear, being too focused on her work. With a small breath releasing through her nose the ginger rolled her eyes and looked away once more, waiting for the slayer to come back to reality.
“Dear Mr. Aderfós,
It has come to my attention that you are now ready to become a C-rank mage. First of all, congratulations! This is a huge step in your adventure, and i am truly happy to be the one helping you achieve such a milestone. But before you can officially rank up, there is a test you must take to prove you are ready.
Some old friends of my family are taking the journey from Peace Village to Beanstalk Village. As you can imagine, that is a very long and treacherous journey. Mountains, thieves, wild animals, and especially the members of the Basilisk Fang guild litter the wagon trail they are planning to take. These are the dangers that come with this journey. As you can imagine, as a family who bear no wizards or magic, it is terrifying to travel through the land without anything but the clothes on their back, some valuables, and a unstable wagon. Which is why i’m assigning you to help them out. Protect them. Get them to Beanstalk village as fast as you can. Make sure neither them or their valuables are touched. And most importantly, do not die.
But really, do be careful. I’m particularly talking about the Basilisk Fang members. To get to Beanstalk, you will have to cross over the edge of their territory. While i do not think they would bother with something just out of their reach, be careful anyway. You never know with those dark guilds…
I have attached the directions to their house to this letter. It shouldn’t be too hard to find. Peace Village is small and everyone knows everyone. If you get lost, just ask someone to show you where the ‘Jacobsons’ live. Oh, and please, do be nice to them. Both our families have a long history together and they are very nice people. If i hear you’re being unpleasant, there will be consequences. This is not just for my family, but to get the guild some credit too. We don’t want our name to be thrown in the mud over a little comment or look, okay?
I will greet you at Beanstalk Village upon your arrival. If everything i ask you to do has been accomplished, you will achieve C-rank. (And i may even treat you to a good meal if you do a good enough job)
Good luck and best of wishes,
Golden Phoenix’s Ace of Topaz, Astrid Foss”
After a couple minutes of nothing but the sound of the ticking clock and scratching as the feathered pen traveled across the paper, she was done. Retrieving an empty letter from the edge of her desk the Ace of Topaz folded the paper into three halfs before fitting it snugly into the sleeve. Pouring some red wax from her lit candle and pressing the official-looking phoenix stamp into the quickly solidifying liquid, she was done. Letting out a sigh of relief Astrid turned the letter over, signing Mega’s full name in big lettering before handing it over to Lark, who took it without hesitance, like she knew what the slayer was going to ask without even needing to hear the words.
“Want me to take this to him?” The redhead asked after plopping herself down from the edge, hands resting upon her hips.
Though a little baffled with how the phoenix continued to read her mind, the mage nodded.
“If you could, please.”
“Will do.”
With a grin, the sound of the phoenix’s boots thumping against the floor grew more and more distant with every step until the sound of the door signaled she had left.
Reaching her arms upwards the slayer stretched, feeling her joints move and pop before she leaned back into the swirling office chair, closing her eyes, a small smile upon her lips, fingers intertwining as they laid upon her lap. As the office chair spun lightly around and around, it was almost as if she was feeling the entire world spin around her...
How would this go? She could not help but wonder.
Stopping the spinning by placing her foot upon the wooden floor Astrid’s crimson gaze reopened, landing upon the ticking grandfather clock to the side of her. It seems she had a decent amount of time until she had to make the journey out to Beanstalk Village… Maybe she would practice her violin for a bit…
