Shedding Ones Scales: For the Defense of the City!

Alrighty! This thread is for the defense aspect of Hargeon’s rebuilding event! Keep in mind all of us will stay in this thread but you guys will be rping usually in an area that only has you and your partner in it, just keep in mind random things may come up that may cause us all to regroup and meet again, aka like if someone yells “LUNCH BREAK!” You guys can meet up with other teams if you so choose! For the first round its primarily introductions! Have fun and Lets create a great story together!

Keep in mind the 2nd round of posts will start when everyone has posted OR I have deemed it to have taken too long, but if you miss the first round, Worry Not! For You can enter in late, just find Kihia to learn of your IC assignment!

(Also if you havent found your partner yet, try rping it out naturally and let it come naturally, just keep in mind those who have already planned to partner up.)

Participants:

Hargeon Town. It had been a while since the last time he had been in the wrecked port... The Seig did like the area, although he had only seen it in its wrecked state, ever since he had arrived in Fiore. To be fair, he still felt like he owed the people there, seeing how he had arrived as a stow-away and practically avoided getting arrested for it, even if he had been spotted. He still didn't know how in the heck he had managed to get out of that situation, but he must've been quite smooth to do so.

That was why when Vargas heard about people signing up to help rebuild Hargeon and take care of its inhabitants, he decided that, even if he got nothing from it, he would still do so. After all, he had never liked owing anything to anyone. Thus, the Seig found himself traversing through the streets of the port, when a giant shadow loomed over the area.

He saw, in the near distance, a rather familiar flying ship, to which he squinted his eyes, attempting to remember where he had seen it before. As the white haired mage identified the ship as the same from his first encounter with Anastasia and Marceline, he smiled a bit to himself. -Yup, I'mma stay clear of that one. -the young man stated, changing his walking direction to avoid a similar situation. To be fair, he was there just for a matter of work, and wasn't interested in dealing with the mecha girl once again. Plus, she'd probably rip him a new asshole if shit went down, so yeah. For the time being, he would focus on helping rebuild Hargeon, and finally pay his debt.

To be fair, Vargas had not been there when the so called Rising Tides had happened, although he had heard a bit of that dreadful day while travelling around Fiore in search for more jobs, work, or any request to do. He still was unaware of the sheer power of the beings that had threatened to erradicate the port, however. Perhaps they were demons? And if so, what kind of Devil's Arms could he obtain from his soul? Also, would they have come from an underwater Hell's Gate? Those were too many questions with too many assumptions, so the Seig decided to just let it be for the time being.

The Devil's Arms user would then traverse to the previously accorded point, in search of his assigned partner. He had gotten notice that the work would be done in pairs, and he found that good. Who would he meet that day?

Hargeon town was once bustling with people; Lamia Scale once has a rather beautiful home town; that was before shit hit the fan. The town was in shambles and those that were living there could barely feels the guilds presence. Now, it was time for Lamia Scale to get back on its feet; now was when change had to occur. This is the state we find ourself in now; our protagonist, Vlad, has decided to help on this front; the city needed to have its defense rebuilt, and it had to be done properly. 

"Why did I agree to this again? What point does this serve in furthering my cause? Oh, it serves none... Well, I suppose this could be something that may be of a certain interest, at least for a short time." He chuckled, walking down the road; it had been quite some time since he had done any real construction and decided this would be a rather interesting day. Looking around it seems a few people had already gathered, but he decided it best to await for his partner, the man who he must help accomplish this task. Letting out a light sigh he leaned back and began the easy part of this event; waiting.

Among the many people that were travelling to and from the once heavily populated Hargeon Town there was a figure which stood out from the rest, or at least those who could be considered the common populace. Both her actual size, which was rather Amazonian, and her physical traits, which were inhuman, made it clear that she wasn't some civilian. Two large wings, bat-like but covered in scales the colour of midnight and tipped with claws, were folded against her back, and her gait was accompanied by the swaying of a long slender tail, thick at the base but tapering to a sharp point, covered in those same midnight scales (although a lot thicker and larger than the delicate ones that adorned her wings). Beyond these already very obvious hints the woman's limbs, from the elbows and knees down, were also covered in scales, with more scales finishing the job on her back and her sides, with some sparingly spread across her cheeks as if to imitate freckles. She could be considered a monster, although those more knowledgeable would be able to recognize the signs of one who had the powerful blood of dragons running through their veins.

Emerald eyes beheld the remnants of the large town before her, the slit pupils shifting as they worked their way across the various parts of the ruins. Akeya had used her wings to get here, but considering the circumstances she had thought it prudent not to fly over the city and just dive down. She was visiting a town which had been almost completely obliterated by a group of monsters which seemed to have no goal other than to bring about chaos and destruction for the sake of their egos. In these circumstances someone like her, a non-humanoid with monstrous traits, would have to be careful lest those that remained in the town couldn't stay their hands and attempted something. The half dragon didn't believe that she would actually be in danger, since she was quite good at staying unharmed, but better not to tempt fate in situations like these. Even if she managed to stay safe it could still cause a ruckus, and nobody had any use for that right now.

She had been there when those monsters had attacked Hargeon Town, and she had done her best to take them down before they could wreak too much havoc. Alas she had been forced to acknowledge that her power and abilities had been insufficient, along with nearly every other mage that had come to defend the settlement. Akeya had definitely tried, and she was quite sure that there were only a handful of mages who hadn't, but in the end there was not a lot one could do to protect a town if a monster as large as the town showed up, whose presence on its own was already enough to make the faint-hearted collapse and whose every move gave birth to a tsunami. The beast had been slain in the end, but before that had been accomplished it had already destroyed nearly everything the mages had been trying to protect other than their own lives. By taking a simple few steps on land. It was absurd, it was ridiculous, yet Akeya could not deny that this had been the case. The proof now lay before her, and it was quite conclusive. The half dragon narrowed her eyes as she thought back to that time. She had believed that after awakening her dragon blood she would already be worth quite a lot more than the vast majority of the mages in Fiore, but that event had helped her reaffirm that even so she was still nothing compared to some of the powers that inhabited the world.

Passing through the outer districts of the ruined town Akeya headed straight for the location where she had been told to meet the others who would also aid in (re)building the defences of Hargeon Town. The Magic Council hadn't been very happy to realize that when push came to shove there had been next to no measures to keep one of the most populated towns in the country from being ravaged by a threat they hadn't been aware of. While the latter could be seen as some form of mitigation, they weren't going to let the next threat have as easy a time, and Akeya was one of the mages who would help accomplish that. She wasn't quite sure what kind of defences they would erect, but it was at least more suited for her than all the other options (since those came down to rebuilding and aiding civilians). The message she had received from the Magic Council had stated that she would be expected near the former Lamia Scale guild hall, at the entrance of the Marketing street. Since Akeya had been in this town before she had an easy time locating the place, at which point she halted for a moment. The construction of the defences would be in the hands of the mage Kihia Avoa, who most likely was in the tent that was located exactly at the place where they were supposed to meet. However when Akeya stepped inside the tent and looked around she didn't see anyone who matched the description of the supervisor. There were others, but Akeya either recognized them or they simply weren't Kihia. However the tent was filled with a bunch of lachrima, and one very big one.

It didn't take much longer after Akeya had entered the tent that the large lachrima revealed itself to be a type of communication lachrima, revealing that Kihia would be their supervisor, but that he was predisposed because he had been tasked with gathering a specific material. The half dragon raised her eyebrows and shifted her weight to one leg as she watched the mage in the lachrima, resting one scaled hand on her other hip. Well, from what the man had said it wouldn't take much longer before he would be here, so she would simply wait and do as he had tasked her. After all, the Magic Council had told her to listen to him, so she didn't have a lot of choice. His tasks were also quite sensible: introduce oneself, explain one's abilities, and attempt to find a good partner for their tasks. Looking around Akeya first listened to one of the other mages who had already arrived, one who she recognized somewhat: it had been quite some time since Anastasia had been a part of Blue Pegasus, but not that long that the half dragon wouldn't recognize her scent. Other than her scent Anastasia had changed quite a lot though: Akeya's memories told her that back then she had been a little girl who focused on combining magic with song. Now she had matured and grown into quite the looker, and as Anastasia explained her talents it had become clear that she had abandoned her aural pursuit and doubled down on technology and advanced mechanisms. It was quite obvious why Anastasia had decided to aid with the city defences.

Akeya herself waited until Anastasia was finished speaking before coughing to draw attention, making it a bit more obvious by spreading her large wings. They weren't very subtle, but the other way around that meant they were quite good for drawing attention, and the half dragon did so detest it when nobody listened when she bothered to speak. Once she was sure that she had drawn the attention she tapped the ground behind her with the tip of her tail.

"Greetings. I am the second ranked Rising Star, Akeya Kuusai. As you can see I am a half dragon of the shadow element, and I am also a Shadow Dragon Slayer of the third generation. Beyond Shadow Dragon Slaying magic, which allows me to quickly move about and ignore obstacles, I also possess highly developed physical strength, extremely acute physical and magical senses, and I can change my shape, although I am limited to living creatures and I can't become much bigger than most non-magical land animals."

She tapped the ground again, at which point her shadow darkened and grew until it suddenly separated from the ground... or at least a part of it. The swirl of darkness moved upwards until it took the shape of a fox made out of shadows, which curled around Akeya's neck and looked at the others in the tent with glowing white eyes.

"Korikami can also move about quickly and without being troubled by obstacles, and beyond that he can act as the portal to a pocket dimension where we can store objects if needed. From extensive testing I've gathered that he can hold up to two adult human males before reaching his limit. The pocket dimension contains air to breathe, so he could be of use transporting people who can't do so themselves past obstacles."

Akeya wasn't very happy giving away all this information, but just this wasn't enough for someone to devise a plan to take her down, and the more cooperative she looked the easier a time she should have in the long run. Still the half dragon was tapping her side with a scaled finger, as always her gaze more of a glare, stern and tolerating no nonsense.

It had been a while since the defence of Hargeon Town; a failed defence that left many dead and the destruction of the town left in his mind. Had he found the abilities he had now then he figured that the town would have been a lot less damaged. Heck maybe it wouldn’t have been destroyed had he been here with his water dragon slayer powers. He could’ve cleared up the waves, taken on the shark man and even fought off the rest of the mages who took out this town. Instead he was coming back with Ana to clear up the mess and make sure it didn’t happened again.
 
He had been listening in to Ana and Taliya talk about why they were here. He didn’t want to butt in to their conversation, but looked away as he felt bad about what had happened. It was actually funny… the whole situation was a little fuzzy to him, but he could only piece bits together from what Ana had told Taliya. Apart from that… there wasn’t really a lot that he remembered. People weren’t remembered, and the actions he took weren’t quite accurate in his mind, but apart from that the general outcome and his emotions were right for the setting.
 
”With us using our strength and knowledge I’m sure we’ll have a good set of defences built up in no time,” he said with a smile. He tried to gauge the area they were landing in, but it just seemed to be a tent in the middle of all the destruction. ”I can’t say I’m too sure about the talent around us. But we’ll be fine, right Charlie?” The gryphon gave a chirp of joy, before pushing Nao onto his back and rushing to to the tent.
 
”Easy there, boy,” he said meekly, trying to hold onto the gryphon, before they arrived with Ana and Taliya into the tent. It was filled with mages and lacrima all over the place. Despite falling behind the two companions of his, he arrived shortly after and was able to see a number of people who had gathered around the place, before a large lacrima glowed and produced some kind of hologram of a man. He seemed to be in charge of the group that would be rebuilding the defences of the city.
 
He listened to other people introduced who they were, with Ana obviously starting. She couldn’t help but take charge of anything she was doing, It was a fact that he had known for a long time. She liked to be leader and she was happy with her taking charge, while he tried formulating some plans for her to use. After all, she was the leader and he was more like her strategist more than anything. However he wasn’t as smart and calculated as Almy was, just more flexible in his plans.
 
While some seemed more reluctant to say who they were, others liked to boast and brag about their abilities. One person in particular claimed they were a Rising Star, and that being able to control shadows somehow helps in rebuilding defences? He wasn’t quite sure, and the water mage visibly scratched his head as the dragon mage thing spoke. Apart from that? No one of worthy notice had entered the tent.
 
He figured it was time to introduce himself. That would be a good idea… to follow the lacrima man and what he wanted them to do.
 
”I’m Nao. I’m the water dr-“ he coughed, feeling the nerves kick in as he tried to speak to these people. ”I err… I’m a water mage who can control the water and a little bit of time, and between me and my gryphon we can control the weather of sorts. Having me in this group allows for us to test the defences made. Because if I can knock them down, then surely the beast the defeated us last time could.” Despite the group seeing governor-water or whatever his name was get taken down by a bunch of d-rank damaging bullets that equated to damage of multiple H ranks… it didn’t mean that the fight was over or even ever over. Rebuilding could just mean that they were just asking for another fight.
 
”As long as we’re weak to the sea then the town is doomed to fall. I know the sea better than anyone here, so I know the best ways to counter it.” Of course a water mage would know the main ways to beat the ocean. Everyone else here was just cheap labour. Even Ana was only really good for her suits to lift objects and carve out the shapes needed to combat the sea.

Vargas, who was still thinking what to do or where he had to go for the time being, found himself with no purpose, just standing in the middle of the street. He scratched the back of his head as he realized that perhaps, he should've tried to inform himself before jumping in, as usual. Well, the white haired mage had messed up, but mistakes were made so you wouldn't make them again... or so they said. That was why he decided that the best thing he could do was to try finding the ones that should be giving the assignments to help with the rebuilding of Hargeon's defenses. That, or his partner. Perhaps he or she would have a better grasp at what they had to do than Vargas himself...

Thinking that the second option was the best, he was just about to move when someone asked him a simple question. It was nothing out of the ordinary, really, but there was something extraordinary there. The one asking him... he made Vargas's senses go alert. While the man that had just directed to him was about his own power level, it was enough to let him know it was a mage. Well, well... had he found someone interesting there? Or rather, had he been found... anyway, the Seig hadn't time to think about that, so he simply looked at the stranger, and then around the place.

-Beats me. I'm not a native and I've never been much around Hargeon other than for jobs, so I'm not sure myself. I was supposed to meet up with someone to help with the city's defenses, but to be sure I don't even recall where the rendez-vous point is -he said that with all the calm and tranquility of the world, as if there was nothing to worry about. Being late? Nah. Missing out work? Oh, well, he was doing it for free. His typical calm, laid-back demeanor didn't allow him to stress out for naught.

-Since I see you're a mage, wouldn't you happen to know anything about it? I could really use some help around here -the white haired man asked the other mage. He had not introduced himself yet, but he figured there was no need to unless they had the same objective there. He doubted that the other mage was there in a trip of pleasure, given that he also seemed to be lost.

If Akeya was bothered by the fact that there were several people in the tent who didn't show much enthusiasm at her introduction she didn't show it. From the half dragon's perspective her introduction had been perfectly sensible, albeit she was still somewhat wary at the idea of just giving away all of her tricks. She explained what she was and what her magic was because that information was necessary to think of the best ways to use her skills. She explained about Korikami because while the fox wasn't exactly the type for labour he could still be used to carry things around and get around obstacles. As for her proclaiming herself to be a Rising Star, if the Magic Council thought she was worthy of the title why should she try to hide it? It was proof that she was considered a capable mage, so the proclamation would ensure to everyone that she would not be a burden.

Of course, Akeya's first and foremost sin would always be pride, so the fact that she found her introduction reasonable mostly just was another display of that pride. The fact that she didn't care much about the reactions of the others was yet another. The only approval she needed was from herself and whoever she ended up choosing as her mate. And maybe any other dragon that she encountered throughout her life. The opinions of humans and humanoids were... well, she wouldn't completely dismiss them, but she wasn't about to feel embarrassed or hurt because some human thought of her as too arrogant.

As for the others that had gathered, Akeya noticed the same thing as Anastasia did: Dragon Slayers were supposed to be pretty rare, but there were at least two already here in only one section of the rebuilding of Hargeon Town, and maybe even three... depending on whether Akeya's suspicions were correct. The one she wasn't sure about was a man who was acting rather nervous and uncertain, which somewhat hurt his image in Akeya's eyes, but he proclaimed himself a water mage who could be used to test the defences. The reason why she was suspicious was that he had begun to say something else before he changed his mind mid-sentence, combined with the fact that as a Dragon Slayer herself (and a half dragon to boot) she had very sharp senses, both physical and magical. Aside from the fact that her ears could pick up the small stutter there was the fact that she was catching the scents of everyone in the room... and she knew what Dragon Slayers smelled like. Since Dragon Slayer magic enhanced the physical body it also altered it, and that included smell. It wasn't enough for her to be absolutely certain (especially since the man's smell could simply be mixed in with the smell of the OTHER Dragon Slayer in the room other than Akeya herself), but it did make her suspicious. That and the fact that she had gone through the trouble of getting herself magic tattoos which allowed her to see magic, and she was curious about this Nao person.

"Being able to test the defences against water attacks is useful, but I doubt we're only going to focus on what attacked this town last time and neglect the possibilities of what could attack in the future."

Keeping in mind what had happened last time and thinking of ways it wouldn't happen again, including performing tests, wasn't a bad idea, but one had to keep their mind open. Last time creatures from the ocean had attacked, but if they only focused on defending against the element of water they would regret it if it turned out that the next attack would be from the skies, or from underground. As the Priory had shown, even if you thought you were safe disaster of a completely unexpected type could show up without warning.

The third Dragon Slayer was someone Akeya knew fairly well. Not personally, but the woman had a reputation. The half dragon, in her paranoia, always was trying to figure out the best ways to ensure her chances of survival, which included trying to figure out which people were the biggest threat to her. She had joined Blue Pegasus because as a dragonkin with the blood of shadow dragons the White Dragon Slayer, Shuhei, would've been the biggest threat to her. He had experience, skill and raw power over her, and beyond that his magic was dedicated to both erasing the darkness and the shadows and taking down dragons and their kin. Beyond that the biggest threats were those who made big names for themselves. Which meant Wizard Saints, Sinners of Fiore, Rising Stars and Coming Storms (although honestly Akeya was pretty sure the Magic Council expected everybody to know people with these titles anyway). And this Dragon Slayer had been the Rising Star #1 before she advanced in the ranks and dropped the title for other upcoming talents to compete for it (Akeya kind of wanted to take that spot, but didn't think the Magic Council was quite willing to give it to her just yet).

Lynn's behaviour made Akeya raise an eyebrow. It was... somewhat curious. At first the woman acted cold, distant, curt. She was there to help, but she certainly didn't intend to become friends with the people who also would help rebuild the defences of Hargeon Town. However she then noticed Elyx (another very famous mage), and suddenly became a lot more animated... only to then just as suddenly turn back into being more distant. Was she hiding a more lively personality?

The half dragon was pondering this when she was distracted by the feeling that she was being stared at. Turning her head she looked at... an unusual sight. A woman with some of the thickest and fluffiest hair Akeya had ever seen on any humanoid (it looked as if you could stuff a pillow with it!), a large tail covered in that same extremely thick fluff, long pointy ears, and the kind of body which turned the heads of many men and plenty of women as well (although in the latter it was most likely to give her an envious glare). And her clothing affirmed to Akeya that this woman knew this and wished to make use of it. However the woman's orange eyes were fixed on... Akeya's own chest. Which nearly made the half dragon laugh, or at the very least chuckle in clear amusement. She knew that her own clothing wasn't the most modest either, but she was pretty sure that this fluffy woman still had her beat in that department. However when the woman began to reach out, her intent clear, the half dragon's eyes narrowed slightly and she raised her tail, ready to flick Taliyah's hands away before Anastasia told the unusual woman to behave and pulled her away. Curious.

Before Akeya could do more than raise an eyebrow at that, however, Kihia returned and apologized for being late. The half dragon returned her attention to the one who would be in charge of this operation, and who quickly got around to explaining what their actual job would be. It looked like a clear plan had already been made for them to follow: a chain of towers which would go through the entire town, connected by archways. Looking at the lachrima which would be buried in those towers they would most likely have many functions... or they all had a single function but needed so many lachrima to deliver a massive amount of magic power to ensure that one function would be enough. Probably the former: a single form of defence, no matter how strong, was too easy to work around.

"Have the ones in charge of the operation already decided what the teams will look like?"

Somewhat embarrassing to admit, but when the Magic Council had told Akeya to go and aid in the reconstruction of Hargeon Town they hadn't informed her about the exact details, like whether she'd be teamed up or everyone would do their own thing or if they were supposed to bring or choose their own partners to complete tasks together with. Although if she had to choose she already had some ideas of who she would approach first.

The first one liked to talk, going on a little bit of a lecture. However, that was none of his business, considering everyone seemed pretty equal for this task. There was more to it than magic, and in a game of chess, no matter how strong or well-known a figure may be, they will be taken down if they don't think ahead of their opponent. Unfortunately, everyone tries to show off their Queen piece, and that leads them to their sudden end once that Queen is taken down. However, credit must be given where it is due, the lady was well-spoken, despite the words that had been said, which helped soften the blow. The details that needed to be stated Shadow Dragon Magic, then left the actions to do the rest. Eh, maybe it was just him. After all, he himself is of Lerale descent, which were born to perform and show off. Then again, he had abandoned their culture, prefering to consider pride arrogance. And maybe this ladyw as not trying to come off as someone who brags, may it was just the unfortunate slip of the tongue incident. Regardless, while he himself was able to think this way, he can imagine a few others who might now take it so well... Well, as long as the work was not affected, he will disregard that possibility. No one was here to make friends, it was simply some volunteer work.

Was an introduction really necessary though? Well, provided he wanted to get off without looking like an arrogant prick, he might as well just humble himself to them anyways. All seem to have some sort of introduction. One man was rather sneaky when it came to his introduction, saying that his power could be used to take down the walls to see if they are really designed to hold up against oncoming assault. He'd cross his arms with this explanation, what exactly was the point of doing that? Was not a wall designed to protect in the first place? If the structure and blueprints have been laid out, then why should it be "tested" by attacking it? If anything, that just sounded like a way to allow the wall to scrumble faster, considering damage would be done onto it. Now the sea though, that's something that could be of some use. The Wizard Saint would think to himself, placing his arms back into his pockets. All right, someone seemed to have a purpose already. Will water be so effective when it comes to having a good structure however? Eh, it was probably for the best, considering natural elements can be a threat as well.

Second up was Lynn, who decided to approach him with a formal manner rather than her usual self. Plus, with that look, it was probably best she kept herself from drawing attention. Er... More of it rather. I'm doing well Lynn, as for you? This is going to be quite the task. Obvious details are obvious. Well, it was probably better to look a little stupid rather than one who dares try to command over all of the others without authority. Speaking of authority, another character would arrive on the scene, thus creating an environment that was none too familiar. Oh well, at least there was someone here that was of good company to him.

I got one question for you... Elyx would think to himself as he heard the man who introduced himself as Kihia begin speaking. The explanation stated that the towers needed to be taken care of, since they were an important part of the project. Seemed simple enough, but that was it? The blueprints would most likely explain the layouts and the systems of the towers, they had to. Otherwise, he'd just be straight up confused about their purpose. In all honesty, the explanation was too well thought out, since he did not seem to have any questions that had "What are those?". So instead, he would just eep his peace as the lady with the Shadow Dragon Slaying magic would ask one. Who were they partnered up with? That was a fair question, considering he does not know which partner he had been assigned to. However, he was going to keep his silence.

It seems his remark about defending the seas was questioned pretty quickly by the one who called themselves the rising star. The only thing that needed to be raised was why anyone would think that moving away from sea defences which seemed to be the town’s main weakness was a smart move. But he wasn’t really one to argue about it, but would just leave a remark on it.

”It would still be important to have some focus on bolstering the area that we seemed to lose in. Not that it’s not likely that anywhere else could be attacked but it’s because the town lacked good sea defences that it got to this state. But I see your point in making sure everywhere is secure, it’s a good idea.”

It was at that point another woman entered the building, regarding herself as Lynn. He could only look at her quizzically as she had somehow changed, and yet she still seemed to have some familiarity in her. Maybe in the way she talked and her mannerisms. Still seemed like a biker girl from Motor City…

He decided to talk to her later when she wasn’t so busy talking to Elyx, and would instead focus on who else was here. Like Ana who seemed to be pretty happy that they could work together, though her partner seemed more interested in other people’s assets than looking after a town here.

Seemed he was busy with his work on the guild was tearing him away from work on the defences. Understandable that the guild was important but did Lamia Scale not have enough people after the attack?

He listened carefully, hearing that they would be building these towers and some evacuation and safety points for the town. It seemed a little… extreme to be building huge towers to defend against the town. In fact he was already questioning their purpose.

”Hi there, may I just ask what the purpose of these towers are? I’m well aware of the need for their precision, but will other bits be installed or are they just going to be large towers?” Towers seemed a little ugly to him. The touristy areas would be devastated… if there were still any left after the last attack.
