Personality:
John is a rather nihilistic and bitter man. It's hard not to be after what he's been through, losing your ability to use magic along with a good portion of your soul can easily make someone that way. His nihilism and his grumpy, middle-aged man-ness can make this gruff individual to somewhat hard to deal with, but he'll generally listen to those he likes, and occasionally offer advice. Possibly the most disturbing aspect about him is that he has a complete lack of the ability to feel sadness. That part of his mind was simply lost along with part of his soul. Some of his other emotions are dulled as well, including pity, remorse, and regret, though they are still present. John does not feel any loyalty to any group, but if he is hired to do a job, he will be loyal to them, up to a point at least. He will try his best to do whatever he his hired to do. He won't betray the client, whether by straight up backstabbing them or by giving out information, unless his life is on the line, of course. His first loyalty is to himself. While he doesn't dislike people, he doesn't generally make a whole lot of effort to meet and get to know people. If someone piques his interest, though, he will approach them to talk.
John tries to avoid combat if possible, considering stealth to be a far superior, and far less risky tactic. If he can, he will subtly take out opponents without getting noticed, provided the job involves doing so, otherwise he will try to bypass opponents entirely (though he may still knock them out so they won't come up from behind). If he knows combat is unavoidable, he will again try to take the upper hand with stealth, by taking out as many enemies as possible before fully engaging, as well as trying to break line of sight to force his targets to search for him, since they can't hit what they can't see. Mr. Sears is more of at tactician than a leader. He knows how to fight, and knows how to work with allies and give orders, but lacks the charisma to lead. In short, he's a tactician, but not a leader. While serving under a leader, he'll generally do what they say, if he thinks it's a good idea. If he thinks they're a poor leader, make unwise decisions, or otherwise thinks he can do a better job, he will try to take the lead, peacefully at first, with force if he thinks it necessary. If he thinks he'd be better off on his own, he will simply leave to be off on his own. He generally prefers to work by himself, in a way at least. If he's on a team, he prefers to scout ahead and such, since his main method of fighting is not fighting at all, and it's easier to avoid being detected when on your own.

John is a middle-aged man, fairly tall at six feet and 2 1/2 inches and with a large, muscular frame. Despite his age, he shows no signs of slowing down. He bears a multitude of scars on his body and face from various fights, which have evidently cost him his right eye and left arm. His eye is covered by a black eyepatch. His left arm, from slightly below the elbow down, is robotic and painted red. He wears a variety of clothing, though he mostly prefers more tactical clothing with lots of pockets and other such things for storing gear when on a mission, but he has casual clothes which are unremarkable.

Likes:
- Cigars- The taste, the smell, the nicotine, it's all so great, and only carries the small cost of cancer, for most anyway. Genetic treatments have rendered John immune to cancer, so there's literally no cost! They are also good for removing leeches and can be used as a makeshift torch.
- Guns- The great equalizer. Guns are one of the best defenses against those with magic.
- Dogs- Dogs are awesome and loyal.
- Cardboard Boxes- They are incredibly useful for infiltration.
- Hornets- They have their uses.
- Snakes- They taste good.
Dislikes:
- Mushrooms- They taste bad and many are poisonous to eat, glowing ones are alright though, since they help restore his internal power supplies.
- Pig- Not pigs themselves, but food made from them. He just doesn't like the flavor.
- Bears- He's had a few bad run-ins with them.
- Guild tattoos- They're dumb. They might not be so bad for a light guild member, since they generally want to be identified as such, but a dark guild member visibly displaying the fact that they're a member of an illegal organization is incredibly stupid.
Motivations:
- Survival- With various powerful forces out to get him, it's his number one priority.
- Wealth- It helps a lot with the first, since wealth means resources.
- Self improvement- With access to magic cut off from him, he wishes to regain the power that he lost, or at least something equivalent, through nearly any means.
Fears:
- Death- John's fear of death mostly arises from fear of what the various powerful nasties that are out for what's left of his soul will do to it after he dies.
- Encountering the various forces that are after him- He's not sure what they are, but he'll know them when he sees them, and hopes to never have to encounter them.
- Vampires and vampire bats- Any vertebrate that feeds off the blood of something else is just wrong, and actual vampires are spooky.
