Heero went and had your back with the character stuff, I'll help you with ranking up.
This site uses an EXP system to rank up your character. All new members begin at "D Rank" which allows you to use 4x D Rank spells, as well as 3x Unique Abilities.
In order to get to the next rank or level, you must venture out and complete jobs. If it's just you alone, you may only do D Rank jobs, however; if you have another player with you you may do any C Rank job that doesn't say "C Ranks and above only" or something similar.
The EXP required to go to the next rank (C Rank) is 150. Each D Rank job awards 25 XP, and some jobs award double, or triple that much. A C Rank job would award you with 50EXP, and some award double, or triple that as well.
As you're starting out: the job I advise you to do are:
To Earthland... And Beyond! this allows you to perform "International Jobs" (25XP)
Act I: Genesis this awards 1x Strong Rank armour [40k value] (50XP)
The Hot Sands (Fairy Tail Only) easy job, courtesy of your GM (50XP)
Oshibana Railway (Fairy Tail only) easy job, 5K Jewel courtesy of your GM (50XP)
after these 3 jobs, you should have 175XP, and will be able to apply for C-Rank.
If you wish, you may put in an application for C-Rank, and state that you wish to skip the exam. The only exception is if your guild mandates you take that exam. C-Rank exam is the only one you're allowed to skip (unless your GM mandates you take it).
What you get at C Rank is:
3x C Rank spells
1x Signature spell (will explain upon request)
1x D Rank Signature Spell
1x Unique ability
