He had wanted to be a wizard, right? So why were the hard aspects giving him pause?

He was wringing his hands as he sat on a bench in the Pegasus gardens. An itch that he couldn't scratch out gnawed at his mind as he sat there, staring into space. The battle at Beanstalk Village and the fight with Slade rang loudly in his mind's eye. With Slade he had been almost like another person, his confidence soaring to levels he even expected. Maybe it was the blood rush he got in the heat of battle, maybe it was the thrill of working with another Dragon Slayer. In truth he had no idea. But it weighed on his mind.

But why should it? He was doing his duty. And people had been saved. Villages were thriving once more because he had stepped in and made the hard choice to fight. He squeezed his fingers tight against his palm. He needed to stop worrying about stupid little things like that.

He stepped away from the bench and headed in to the main hall. He needed a distraction. A job would fill that quota just fine. Without even looking he grabbed the closest parchment pinned to the board and brought it up to read it.

Episode 11:
Harden Your Heart

It was no surprise to find his luck was turning against him.

The job he had picked up and ultimately decided to take was not only a challenging one but also looked to put Eliot on the spot. His moral compass would be put to the test; this he knew as he walked down the road towards Hargeon Town.

Apparently there had been a couple of murders in the lower docks, the victims brutally savaged to death. The guards had attempted a mission to discover and capture the killer but it went south, costing one of the men his life. About the only positive that came out of the botched job was the identity of the suspect came to light. One Jacob Goodnight was the culprit of the vicious attacks. But he was far stronger than given credit and the Hargeon Guard believed a wizard was needed to stop any further attacks.

So it fell to Eliot to be that wizard.

The headquarters for the town guard was bustling when he entered, members rushing back and forth.

Eliot stopped in the doorway, looking every which way in blinking awe at the sheer traffic that was going through the small room. Men and women alike brushed past one another, talking quickly as they tried to hammer out the details of whatever case they were working on.

The Dragon Slayer adjusted his pack on his back and took a couple steps forward, moving through the crowd. As he zigged and zagged through river of bodies, he noticed a guard posted at a desk right in the center of the room. He broke out of the stream right in front of the man. The guard lifted his head just enough to glance at the boy until he set his gaze back on the parchment in front of him.

"Name and problem?"

"Eliot Malpirg. I was actually sent here to help you guys out." He stated quickly, dropping his pack on the ground by his feet.

The guard's brow furrowed and he brought his head up once more, this time keeping his sight set on the boy. "You were sent to help us?" He asked, his face stoic.

The young wizard nodded. "I'm a wizard with Blue Pegasus." To back up his claim he rolled up his sleeve to show the tattoo that was imprinted on his skin. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the job parchment. "It seems you're having trouble with a killer?"

The guard's face didn't change in light of the two items that backed up Eliot. His gaze never shifted from Eliot's face. "Blue Pegasus sent us...a kid?"

Even in light of the dire situation, Eliot could still overreact. "Hey! Just because I'm a kid doesn't mean I can't help!" He blurted out.

The guard smirked. "Sure thing kid. Do me a favor and grab my paperwork from the top shelf, will ya?"

It was a little while later that Eliot had managed to get in a meeting with the guard captain. The woman, a tall brunette that towered over him, held the job parchment in her hand as she read it over. Of course she had seen it before; it was her handwriting on it. But she was taking her time examining it, if only to test Eliot's patience. "So Blue Pegasus sent us a squirt." She said with a snort, looking down at him.

The Dragon Slayer, seated right in front of her desk, was steaming. Literal steam was billowing out of his ears and his face was as red as a ripe tomato. But he had already released his anger once in the headquarters and wasn't looking to put on another show. "Yup. That's me." He said between clenched teeth.

She hid her smirk as she turned away from him. "It's a good thing you came. We're going to need all the help we can get."

"So this Jacob Goodnight is responsible for the murders?" Eliot asked, managing to control his annoyance and return to his normal color.

She nodded. "He cut one of my men down during a midnight raid. We thought we had him cornered but..." She trailed off as the hard memory echoed in her head. "He's smarter than we thought. He was a miner so we figured he was just big and dumb. Coworkers said he was always a bit strange but nothing that led us to believe he was this tactical."

Eliot listened quietly, his iron hand tucked under his chin. "So do you have a plan then?"

She turned back to him. "The plan is fairly simple. He hunts on the lower docks, aiming for people walking by themselves or in couples. He's eluded our guards in disguise so far somehow. We need an unknown that is capable of taking him down themselves. Looks like that is you."

The lower docks painted quite a different picture of Hargeon.

On the surface, Hargeon Town was pleasant. Clean streets, friendly people. Even the upper docks seemed to be part of the picturesque life of a well-off town. But underneath it all, the seedy underbelly presented a vastly darker world. The people were shifty, alleyways were dark and ominous and the smell of rank fish lingered throughout the air.

Eliot sniffed the air and frowned. It just didn't smell right down here.

He had insisted that he could handle this mission, despite the captain's slight worries. Though he was only fourteen, he had already established himself as a capable wizard in his own eyes and felt no need to ask for help. He may have had some worries about his powers and commitment to the violent side of the wizarding world but he knew that this Jacob Goodnight needed to be stopped. But the captain had told him to get it done, no matter what. She didn't care if the murderer was captured or killed. She just wanted the nightmare over.

Despite her stoic looks, she was scared underneath it all for the people she had sworn to protect.

The Iron Dragon Slayer moved down the docks slowly, his boots echoing as he took each step. His hands were shoved in his crimson jacket and his shoulders were loose. He was doing his best to look as relaxed as possible, not like someone on edge.

But the people of Hargeon knew about the murders and knew that the attempt to capture the culprit had failed. No doubt everyone he passed, despite how seedy they looked, was on edge. Maybe he was putting on a brave face to give himself confidence. Maybe it was to trick Jacob into revealing himself sooner rather than later. Eliot didn't really know himself and yet kept up the act.

He moved past the last shanty on the docks, moving out towards the sea. The sound of the water sloshing against the wooden beams below was almost relaxing, if it weren't for the tension in the air.

And then, of course, there was the smell.

Eliot sniffed again. Something was off here. The entire stench that permeated the lower docks was rank enough but there was a...corrupted tint to it now. His gait slowed as he headed down the wooden structure and it was in that rhythm change that he heard the sound of other footsteps. They were quick to adjust to his step but he had heard them in that split second. They were only a few meters behind, maybe ten yards at the maximum. Someone was trying to stay silent, trying to sneak up on him.

Eliot stopped walking and so did the shadow behind him. "I'm going to make this real easy on you, Jacob." The Dragon Slayer said loudly, staying put in his spot. "Drop whatever weapons you have and give yourself up. This doesn't need to get any more violent than it already has been."

He waited a few moments, his hands clenched into fists inside of his pockets. The smell lingered in the air but there were no footfalls. Then he heard it. The sound of whistling as a sharp object spun through the air.

Heading right for him.

Eliot spun around and brought his right arm up. The iron limb rang loudly as the knife stabbed into the forearm, its form wiggling back and forth in its new resting place. The Dragon Slayer could see the hard brown rust on its sharp edge, a dark sign of what the weapon had been used for recently.

"That's my best knife." The thick, heavy voice of Jacob Goodnight rang through the air, drawing Eliot's gaze to him. He stood directly across from the Dragon Slayer, a sick grin plastered over his bearded face. He looked like the rest of the people down here; dirty, dressed in grubby garments and holding some kind of grudge against something. Only difference was he had a butcher's apron over his torso and waist, clouded by dried blood.

"I'll be needing that back. It has more interesting people to kill than runts like you." The murderer taunted, pointing at the knife embedded in Eliot's arm.

The Dragon Slayer's face twisted in anger. His other hand crossed over his chest and took hold of the knife's handle. With a hard tug, he pulled it free of his iron appendage. "This knife?" He asked, his face hardened.

"That'd be the one." Came the butcher's reply. But even as the words left his mouth, Eliot had already flicked his wrist, sending the knife falling down towards the water. With a satisfying plop, the grimy liquid claimed the weapon and dragged it down into the deep dark.

Jacob Goodnight's face changed from its menacing humor into a dark, murderous scowl. "You're going to regret that."

Only a second passed between Jacob's words before he was was rushing forward, brandishing another weapon. This was a fairly large meat cleaver, glinting in the low lightning of the lower docks. He clearly didn't get the chance to use this weapon a lot, for it looked as clean as the day it had been forged.

Eliot stood his ground as the massive man came upon him. And as the sharp weapon came down upon him, his right hand snaked up to grab a hold of it. The loud twang as iron met steel echoed in both their ears and sparks flashed from Eliot's palm as he held the weapon in place, grimacing against the butcher's surprising strength.

"You've gotten yourself in way over your head, shrimp." The man snarled as he pushed his arm down harder onto the Dragon Slayer.

"I'll decide that!" Eliot hissed back as he let the knife dip in close to his face. And then, with Jacob watching, he opened his mouth and snapped his teeth onto the metal object.

There were no words to explain Jacob's surprise at Eliot taking the blade into his mouth. And he was completely lost for words or explanation for when the young wizard peeled the metal off of it like he was tearing meat off of a turkey leg. The murderer stumbled backwards, staring wide-eyed at his cleaver with the giant bite mark in it. "What the hell are you?" He mumbled in shock.

Eliot was munching on the blade, chewing it down into iron paste. And then with a hard and dramatic swallow, he wiped his mouth on his forearm. And then a small smirk came across his lips.

"I'm Eliot Malpirg. And I'm a Dragon Slayer."

Before the man could react to the words, Eliot's right arm transformed into a hammer-headed pillar and extended. The hard top smashed into Jacob's stomach, driving the wind out of him and causing his eyes to bug out. His arms instinctively wrapped around his stomach as he fell to his knees, trying to find his breath and his will to fight again. His head raised just enough to see Eliot rushing in, his foot racing forward for his face. The last thing he saw was the boot filling his vision and then the feeling of the world spinning. Then everything went dark.

"I'll admit; I'm impressed, short stop."

The guard captain was standing on the docks, her hands planted on her hips. She was watching her subordinates cuff the unconscious Jacob Goodnight and drag him to his feet. It took five men to get him up, each one straining to hold up the large butcher's form.

Eliot was standing behind her, his face red once more. He shoved his fists into his pockets angrily and looked away from her, scowling. "And he didn't even have to die." He responded to her.

She turned around to look at him. "He still might. But that will be up to the courts to decide. Most of my men would have shot him dead on sight. But not you."

The Dragon Slayer looked at her out of the corner of his eye. "Killing him would have made me as bad as him. He needs to answer for his crimes and he can't do that if he's dead. Besides, it's not in my wheelhouse to kill people."

She smiled just a bit. "I'm relieved to hear that. A wizard with your power could easily be corrupted by it. I'm glad that someone like you has it instead."

The compliment was enough to pull his attention back to her and he began to rub the back of his head, smiling bashfully. "Well thanks Capt-..."

"Even if it's someone as tiny as you."
