The spirits were alive as Niyol sat among the decaying ruins of what used to be a grand castle. The large ex-building that likely stood taller than life, a beacon of power and prosperity in its time now reduced to little more than vine covered walls, cracked stone, and piles of rubble with some parts still suspended and acting as a roof. It was in these ruins that Niyol resided, staying separated from the rest of humanity out of concern for their safety, and fear of losing his way. But he was not alone, no, he was never alone in this isolated place, located in an area of the mountains so uncharted that it can only be seen from the air. Niyol's protege, Hana Lich, who had come to recognize the shirtless man as her father had stayed with him at almost all times.

The spirits in this place were normally quite calm, having settled into the land since their physical bodies had expired so long ago. It was this day that the spirits were reacting to something that was throwing off the balance of the world, letting Niyol know that it had come time for him to intervene in the matter. Hana was unable to sense the spirits in the same way her master could, but she was able to see the signs as they reflected in Niyol, slight alterations in his body language to be more specific. She knew what would come next, and had gone to prepare Niyol's equipment since she also knew that he would likely want to go alone and call her in if she was needed.

The spirits were calling Niyol to the Cursed lands, an area which had many strange afflictions ranging from lycanthropy to a strange zombie virus that plagued many of the areas. While meditating, Niyol had a vision of a place he had been before... a guild hall that was empty, the guild that owned it killed by a child who'd become intoxicated by her own power. While he was growing tired of the place, having proven to be a conduit for unfortunate circumstances as well as containing a great deal of young spirits who seemed to be just as unstable as those who perform actions within its hallowed halls.

It wasn't all to long a trip for Niyol. Altsoba had taught him how to step between worlds, and while it took him a good hour to set up the spell due to lack of experience with spatial magic, it was significantly less time used than it would have been had Niyol flown the distance. Where he was right now was a small village that was very close to the guild hall, many of the denizens having either been from, or descended from one of the members of the guild hall. It was here that Niyol had decided to visit the guard station to ask if they had known of anything strange with the guild hall, and found out that they sent a team to the building some months ago, and the team was yet to return. Niyol gave the head guard some peace of mind in the form of a promise that if he found them, he would bring them back or retrieve their dog tags if they weren't alive. After signing off on the job notice by means of placing a thumb stamp using his blood as ink, Niyol had set out on a path that lead up to the guild hall.

And while you are sitting indoors
waiting for the storm to pass
I will be outside dancing in the rain

    “I think you’re lost…”
The voice of the blonde chirped from behind Astrid as they continued to walk but a few inches from one another, lifting her feet carefully as to not step on a large patch of bracken upon the ground. It had been perhaps an hour since they had left the village in search of their destination, or maybe even more. She could not tell as she had no way of telling the time. However from the way her legs were starting to shoot pain through her body with almost every step, she would have to say about an hour. Even with her recently decreasing stamina she knew she could not be this exhausted after strolling for less than that. That is, unless her stamina deceased even more since her last job.
The light mage gripped the metal handle of her violin case tightly, a single silver eyebrow twitching as a wave of irritation from the girl’s obvious statement passed through her system, a frown upon her lips.

“Yes, i am aware from the five other times you have told me that. Thank you.” Astrid huffed back, lifting a hand to push a tree branch upwards and duck her body under it.
The paths in this area all looked the same, and on top of that there didn’t seem to be any signs or landmarks to indicate where anything was. At least not any that Astrid could see. And thanks to the violinist’s horrible sense of direction it had felt as though they had been going around in circles for quite some time now. All of the trees were starting to look familiar.
You would think a guild would be easier to find than this since most of the time they were built to attract attention. But if the guild was as haunted and dark as the villagers made it out to be… Maybe not finding it was for the better.
Blue oculars squinted through the thick canopy of the branches upwards towards the gray, cloudy sky, placing a hand upon her forehead to shield her eyes. Even the sky here felt menacing. It held a sort of dark and foreboding aura that told her to turn back. But she could not do that. She had taken on this job to impress Elyx, her mentor. Her last few jobs had been less than adventurous and rather safe and simple. Entertaining children, playing tag, chasing an overgrown chicken, teaching a baby how to talk. While they were fun and it always felt nice to help people out, now that she was apart of Golden Phoenix she felt like she had to live up to the expectations of the treasure hunting guild. More risk for more jewels.
So, deciding to change it up she had grabbed the first B-ranked mission she spotted pinned upon the board and took it without hesitation.
Now she was here, traveling through the Cursed Lands to find this abandoned guild and hopefully free it of it’s strange occurrences. That is, if she ever got there.

Giving up on trying to spot any sign of getting closer to the guild from the sky Astrid sighed, blinking her gaze back down to the ground, staring at it for a brief moment before she looked back up to the front of her.
Azure eyes widened slowly as she spotted a masculine figure a few feet before her. She couldn’t quite make out a lot of the details, only that it was male from it’s muscular form. Although the long hair almost said otherwise.
Now that she thought about it, one of the guards from the village not too far from here had mentioned another mage had also taken on this particular mission and had stated to make his way to the guild right before she had showed up. Perhaps this was him.
Or it could not be him and be some dark mage looking for a fight… Though honestly by this point Astrid would take the chance. If she didn’t die from a dark mage she would die from starvation or something else if she stayed lost in here for too much longer.
A smile tugged at the corners of Astrid’s pale lips.
“Hey, look. There’s a guy over there. Maybe he’s the other mage we were told about” She turned to face the old-styled blonde. However when she turned her head to look, she was gone.
A moment was spent looking for the green, frilly dress, but nowhere behind her did the girl stand. Vanished. Again. Maybe she was bored of walking, or simply didn’t want to be around her anymore. Either way Astrid didn’t mind. She had grown tired of the girl’s annoying words and actions. It was nice to be able to hear her own thoughts again.
Although… The sudden silence and realization of being alone slowly dawned upon the musician, enveloping her body from the feet up in a cold, chilling blanket.
She became aware of everything. The way the wind blew through the trees, whistling a creepy tune. The bushes shook and rattled. The creaking noises of the forest intensified.
A chill ran down her back, feeling her heart begin to thump like stone inside her chest.
Astrid started to walk again, quickening her speed to a fast walk as she began to approach the figure, silver hair lifting slightly from her back as the air passed by her.
“Excuse me!” she called out to grab his attention.
She only slowed her pace once she managed to free herself from the more dense part of the land, feeling a bit safer inside the more open area
She stopped right before him, bending over to place her hands upon her knees, trying catching her breath with every big inhale and exhale.
Once her breathing calmed and she could no longer feel her heart throb inside her ribcage she looked up, offering the man an apologetic smile, feeling a bit foolish for letting a complete stranger see her out of breath so easily.
“You wouldn’t happen to be looking for the guild also, would you?”

"You came back!" a voice called, originating seemingly from every direction. It was high pitched, squeaky, and strangely eager to see him. Had this child's voice been any other child, Niyol wold have returned the enthusiasm two fold... but this particular voice was that of the child who had once killed her entire guild... Lillith. "What do you want?" Niyol replied coldly while continuing his lonesome stroll through a moonlit David Copperfield movie. "I guess it makes sense you don't like me... I promise I'm not the same! You took away my magic just before I died so I wasn't being controlled by it." she said while floating behind. Her hand reached out and grabbed Niyol's and began tugging. While normally ghosts and other form of ethereal undead were incapable of touching humans, Niyol wasn't entirely human, and his soul had a much more corporeal nature to it which made interacting with them the same as high-fiving a human. "Please don't be mean." her voice came out, it was saddened, so much so that Niyol felt his heart begin imploding. He stopped, closing his eyes and steeling himself for when the child's spirit decided to try and kill him again. "It's been so long since I talked to someone... the others run away, and no one visits. I'm sorry, I'm really really sorry! Please don't le-" 'Excuse me!' "-You brought company again?" Lillith's mood had improved. "No." Niyol replied while listening for the source while placing his right hand on the hilt of the blade on his left side, getting ready to cleave whatever it was in half in case it was hostile.

Lillith released Niyol's hand, allowing his left arm to relax as they waited to see the source of the voice. When the source showed itself, it was hunched over with its hands on its knees, panting from the meager run it had concluded. 'You wouldn’t happen to be looking for the guild also, would you?' it said after catching its breath... Niyol's eyes, dull, dark purple, empty, voidesque, and soul tearing as they were locked with hers, but in reality they were inspected every part of her being at the same time. Oceanic hues set on a back drop of fair, soft looking skin. Gentle lips among dulcet facial features, a light silver crown that dangled to the last inch of her back, shimmering in the moonlight and appearing fine as silk. A while and blue dress with sandles to match her hair... Over all, a very gentle looking creature. Niyol was a contrast to this, wearing no shirt, only bandages wrapped around his lower torso with scars decorating his pectorals. His abdominal muscles protruding through the bandages, showing that he was no slouch when it came to life, though the scars on his chest would suggest as much. Under his left eye was a scar that appeared to be a symbol of sorts, a single line running from the bottom of it, wrapping behind his left jaw and trailing down the back of his neck to a larger scar. This scar, had the bottom half not been hidden under the medical bandages, would appear as a demon's face. Another line trailed from the top-right half of the large back-scar that ran up to his right shoulder and spiraled down the arm, landing at a scar that encompassed the entirety of the back of his right hand that appeared to be a demonic scar, resembling the one on his back. Niyol's hakama, oriental styled combat robe bottoms, was torn in some places with stitching in others. The bottom of them flayed, having been so old that he was unable to repair the damaged ends. He wore no shoes, but his feet showed no signs of scarring at all, as though time had hardened his soles and made them resistant to the ground beneath them.

All this information was taken in in an instant, his time of surviving in the wilds had trained Niyol to know that just one second was all it took to die. Niyol was used to taking information in quickly, so by the time the woman had finished asking her question, Niyol had already examined every inch of her being, her soul, and the soul of her special companions... "Indeed, I have business with the denizens of that guild." he said calmly. "Lillith." Niyol said calmly, a magic circle appearing next to him showing a small girl with black pigtails and a dark purple dress came from it. "I'm going to expect you to make up for your past deeds." his voice was apathetic, but not necessarily monotone. He looked at the woman, his eyes narrowing on hers "I am Niyol, the Guardian of Souls. What business do you have with the damned?" he asked.

He answered her so quickly, as though the response had been rehearsed.
Astrid straightened her posture as she rose from her lowered position, blue eyes meeting purple. Now that she was closer she could see his features more clearly. He was rugged, scars and marks littering his body from the parts where the bandages did not reach. He was also a bit underdressed, wearing no shirt, but instead having the medical bandages cover his torso. Her first concern was that he may be cold, out in this dreary weather like that. But she supposed she wouldn’t ask as she would have nothing to offer him anyway even if he was. He looked fine with it though, he showed no sign of pain or being cold. Well, fine as he could be… The musician had met one other person who looked the same as this man did when she first met him, and she had learned that what others may be use to will not always be the same as to what she was use to. Maybe he liked less clothing. She would not judge.
Realizing she may have been staring at his torso for too long she blinked back up to his face as he introduced himself, lips parted slightly as she stared back into his narrowed eyes.
Niyol… She repeated the name in her mind to try and not forget it. Another strange name. It was unique. There seemed to be a lot of those names around these parts. A good thing. That way no one would be confused with someone else.
Her lips pursing in a thin line for a moment as the name and title sunk in Astrid bobbed her head once, giving a tiny smile.
“I am Astrid, Charmer of Light” she dipped her body in a small bow, grabbing at the sides of her white dress and lifting them slightly with it.
“I’m here to help rid the guild of spirits-” she cut herself off, bringing up her violin case to rest in her arm, using the other to flip open the metal lock upon the side of it. Rummaging her hand inside the collection of many papers and other small objects resting around the wooden violin, the tip of her tongue protruding from her mouth as she concentrated on looking. It took a second before she found what she was looking for, letting out a “ah hah!” as she felt her hand grab the paper.
Taking out the crumpled paper she used the other hand to flip the lock down and close the case up, letting the handle fall back into her free hand.
“-For a job” she finished, her face gleaming with her happy expression, proud of herself for finally remembering to bring the job information with her for once instead of leaving it at home.
She pushed forward the crumpled and torn piece of paper to Niyol, if he felt the need to read it and confirm the job application himself.
After a moment she pulled the paper back to her side, eyes looking upwards as her face flushed with a light glaze of red, a sheepish curve at the edge of her lips.
“Though i’m afraid on the way there i got… Lost” embarrassment took over her features, interlocking her hands behind her back slowly.
“So i was hoping you may be able to help me.”
She felt a bit embarrassed, having someone she just met help her, especially since it looked as though he may be her partner on this job. Her pride would normally force her to continue onward and pretend nothing was wrong. However this land didn’t feel safe, and with her companion up and leaving her, she did not want to be alone. So for now, she would have to swallow her pride.

The fact that she bowed to Niyol let him know that she was an individual with a bit of class, along with class came pride which lead him t believe that he may end up putting her in her place at some point, be it on this night or in the future. She introduced herself as the 'Charmer of Light' on top of giving her name. It was unknown to Niyol whether or not she was replicating his form of introduction, or if she truly was granted that type of title. Regardless of which, it wasn't a particularly important question to him, at least, not something worth asking about. She had explained she was slightly lost, and requested Niyol's assistance in finding the guild hall. "The guild hall isn't so easy to spot from here. It's hidden behind a great deal of trees. If we are both traveling there, I have no cause to refuse showing you the way." Niyol stated calmly, walking past Astrid and going up the path towards the guild hall.

It was only a ten or fifteen minute walk using the cleared path Niyol was traveling on, and the whole time Niyol would remain dead silent with Lillith walking behind him. Niyol suddenly stopped, his fists balled up and his eye twitched. Astrid would feel gravity begin increasing substantially, to the point where even her running speed would almost be cut in half. The ground below Niyol erupted, a crater forming around his feet 1 foot thick where the force of gravity was godly. He reached over to his left and grabbed the hilt of the katana that was resting in a white sheathe. Walking forward, approaching the gates to the guild hall a man came into view who was standing up, looking at Niyol with wide eyes.

Standing among the intense spiritual pressure, Arcadios felt it's force even more than Astrid. His legs buckled, he felt weak and before he knew it Arcadios collapsed to his hands and knees. Niyol slowly drew the blade from its sheath, the black glowing white edge being contrasted by the white glowing black back of the blade coming into full view. "Are you the one disturbing the spirits here?" Niyol's voice came across grim, angry, ready to kill Arcadios who was struggling just to look up from his humbled position. Purple eyes locked on each other, the gravity beginning to return to normal and Arcadios's muscles relaxing as his eyes shifted to the white tattoo on Niyol's left arm. His breathing grew heavy as though Niyol was still crushing him, his head hit the dirt as he prostrated himself. "I- I'm so sorry great chief! I did not mean t-" "What do you know of the people." "I- I'm sorr-" "Do not apologize. State your business." "Please chief, I will leave this land and not return if you permit me." "I lay no claim to this land, nor did I condemn you to death. I asked your business." "I was told by the spirits to wait here, had I known members from the tribe were coming I would have delayed-" "How do you know of the Tribe of Souls?" Niyol's voice was cold... painfully so. "I am a dirty blood, unworthy to be one with the people." "What is the source of your blood." "A woman who was one with the people, and a man who was one with the mind."

Niyol slowly placed his weapon in its sheath, extending his hand to Arcadios, the man flinching as he wasn't expecting the gesture. "Take my hand brother." "I'm not your brother... I'm unwor-" "I am the existing leader of our tribe. I care not where half of your blood lays, as your heart is true to our ways. In my eyes, you are one with the people and are more than worthy to be given the same rights. Take my hand and rise." Arcadios grabbed the hand and the two of them pulled, causing the two soul mages to end with them facing each other. "What is your name brother?" "I am Arcadios." "No, you are Arcadios, Savant of Damnation." Niyol said with a smirk. Arcadios's eyes widened, a glimmer of happiness appearing in them as he had been accepted as part of the tribe he hailed from. "Arcadios, this woman is Lady Astrid, the Charmer of Light." he said while moving aside so his new brother could see. Arcadios bowed gently in an oriental fashion "I'm deeply honored to meet such a fair maiden Lady Astrid, I am Arcadios, the Savant of Damnation." he said, feeling rather proud to have his own title. "I have business at this location, but once it is concluded I shall provide your markings and we shall drink to the song of the mother." Niyol said, his personal spirits lifted by finding someone who truly was from his tribe. If a question was raised as to how Niyol knew Arcadios was from the Tribe of Souls, Niyol was reading his soul the entire time.
