Mmm...no! It's mine! I won't let hav~AH!" Suddenly, a young woman with long green hair was hitting the floor of her room. A panicked escape began with her blankets, having been wrapped around her lower half in what seemed like knots overnight. ”Get off me, you stupid blankets!” The yell seemed to do it for her, as she finally got one leg free and was able to push the rest off before jumping up onto her feet. The young woman visibly calmed down, if one were able to see her at that moment, as she realized she was still in her own room. With a deep yawn, her arms stretching out in both directions as they rose over her head, the Lamia Scale mage automatically walked over to her mirror.
”Wow...last night really did a number on me...” Her hair was a MESS! So much so that she ended up spending the next half hour combing and brushing to get it all straightened out. Once satisfied, the tear drop shaped jewels were attached to the usual places in her hair before her ever baggy shift went on. Hands went through sleeves as a head popped through, another yawn escaping her lips as she did so. A change of pants, from sleepwear to the very short shorts, would be done before a pair of black boots would cover her feet. Once all of that was complete, the holy of holies would be placed upon her head; her favorite hat. The cat eared item was actually enchanted with anti-fall and a dexterity increases. Not that the enchantment was her reason for loving it, she had worn the hat forever and it felt like a part of her now. A little spin in front of the mirror to make sure everything was all right was done before she turned towards the door of her room. She had nothing to do today, and was intent on finding someone to hang out with around the guild hall.
Walking towards her door, booted feet moving quietly across a carpeted floor, she noticed a letter that had been slid under it at some point while she had been asleep. 'I wonder why they did this instead of just knocking. It's not like I would not have woke up to it.' Bending over to pick up the letter, she realized that it was written by Kihia specifically for her. The note wasn't very long, but it definitely got the mission details across. The young woman had been hand-picked to go to Ca-Elum to participate as a negotiator for Fiore in a trade conference; her exact mission being to acquire unique trading options for the good of Fiore. At the bottom of the letter was a foot note, noting that anything she might need for the trip would be provided. It also said she only had two days to be ready, as the ship would leave the port at that time. ”Two days? I have to study up on everything involving trade conferences and negotiating while also making sure I'm prepared to go for who knows how long I'll be there...”
Neatly folding up the letter, the young woman left her room and headed for the place she would find information on what she was needing; the library. Surely she would be able to find basic information on the subjects, as well as possible finding historic one's to see how they went about acquiring trade options with others. The trip was a short one, the morning commute by walk being almost uninterrupted as she walked towards the main library in town. 'Mao would be so proud to know I'm actually going to a library. I think she was starting to wonder if I knew how to read, given the difficult jobs I tend to pick.' This thought was done as she walked through the large double doors of the quiet building. Hushed whispers could be heard as she made her way through the main lobby. Walking up to the front desk, as she had no clue how to navigate the library to find exactly what she wanted, the young woman would quietly hold a conversation with the older lady there.
”Welcome to Hargeon Library, is there something I can help you with dear?”
”I'm going to be going to a trade conference, and was wondering if you had any books or study material on them as well as negotiating procedure.”
”Ah, I see.” The woman turned and opened a drawer behind her as she began to flip through a long list of paper tabs. It seemed odd, a system not involving lacrima, but she could see the nostalgia in the woman's eyes as she found the location for Aiyana, turning back around to face the bandaged mage before speaking again.
”Go to the second floor and find section F. Go to the bookshelf closest to the back wall of it, and the bottom row will be all about trade conferences as well as conduct for them.”
”Thanks, and have a good day.”
Having the information she needed to find the books the young woman made her way to the second floor, her steps slow so as to remain quiet inside the peaceful building of knowledge. It didn't take the girl long to find the section she needed to find, but it would take a lot longer for her to decide on a book to read while she was there. 'They're all so...big!' Over half of the books were at least a thousand pages or longer. There was no way she could read and remember that in the time she had! Searching frantically, she finally found a book that she could at least skim through in the day she planned on staying inside the learning facility; 'Trade, negotiating, and you.' She knew enough about the day to day trade of jewels for materials as well as bartering without jewels. The young woman had done enough shopping to learn that from experience. But maybe the book would give her enough little tidbits of knowledge and some good tips needed for what she was going to do in the near future.
Feeling slightly nervous about everything she gulped loudly as she sat down and cracked the book open. The binding was quite loose, telling her she wasn't the only one to have had picked out that very book for the same reasons. Aiyana let that fact allow relief to flood her as she began to read about what she was to do at these trade conferences. The event, taking place in Ca-Elum, was going to have the countries and their major businesses, products, and services up for trade for equal or profitable terms decided upon by the negotiators present. That meant she would be representing a country known for it's guilds and their completion of jobs. Unlike most of the foreign lands, Fiore was a jack of all trades in what it did. Food, entertainment, precious ore and stone material; they had some of it all up for trade. With luck, maybe she could find the countries that needed on of those and get something even better out of it for Fiore. 'With luck, I could even manage multiple trades and make Fiore, and especially Kihia, proud!'
She stayed wrapped up in the book for a good hour before she noticed that someone had sat down next to her. The boy had to be around her age, and held an air of intelligence as he read through a much larger book studiously. He was quite cute, and could have been a stunner if not in clothes that the nerds in school always wore. Leaning close to him, a smile on her face, she whispered quietly. ”A lovely place to meet people, isn't it?”
Her comment seemed to fall upon deaf ears as he turned a slight glare at her, before realizing what he was doing would be construed as rude if he didn't say anything with it. ”Sorry, I have a negotiation with another business and I really don't have time to flirt.” Even as he said this, his eyes told her that had they been anywhere but the library he may have returned the favor. ”I see you're studying for something similar, may I give you a few tips?” Aiyana, being surprised at being turned down so quickly, simply nodded her head up and down as she prepared to listen and mentally note his little bits of information he planned to give her. Clearing his throat for a second, clearly not having been ready to do any talking while here, he slowly thought before he spoke.
”Always keep in mind that both you and the other party are trying to make a profit out of any agreement you make. Equal value isn't always enough.
Sometimes one party will want a little more, or even a show of good faith at the start that will be returned at a later date with a small bonus of goods or service.” The tips went on like that for a good while, the Lamia Scale mage listening intently as he spoke until he got the the final tip; the devastating one. ”And never forget that your personal looks won't get you anywhere at these things.”
"You mean I can't just use my pretty face?!" The hurt and surprise on her face was genuine. The woman had never held a job where looks couldn't get you somewhere. The man simply nodded his head before inquiring her about anything else she may want to know. ”My name's Aiyana, may I ask who you are?”
”I'm Stephen Caesar, glad I got to give some pointers from my field of work for once.”
Thanks. you don't know how much I appreciate this Stephen. If you ever need anything in the future you can find me at the Lamia Scale guild hall, I'm a mage there.” Saying her goodbyes with him, she got up from the table they were at and put her book back where it belonged. The walk back to the guild hall took a lot longer than the one to the library, a lot more time spent studying and talking to Stephen than she had originally thought. What she had thought was a few hours had ended up being the entire day. The light of the sun was already giving way to the moon and stars as she took her first steps into the guild hall, waving to a few mages that were on their way out. The mage thought about asking Mei to come along, but was unsure that the other girl would enjoy so many people in one place so decided against it. 'I'll go alone on this, there's enough people where I'm going that I'm sure I'll be fine.' Making her way to her room the young woman prepared herself for bed. Tomorrow she would make all her preparations for the travel by boat. Sleep that night would involve happy dreams about sailing on the ocean, and adventures.
The next morning she awoke to a normal day, unlike the twisted mess she had the day before. Sitting up in her bed, she stretched her arms out and let loose a yawn that could have woken the neighborhood if not for the closed door of her room. Rubbing her eyes as she stood up, Aiyana did her daily routine before scouring her mess of a room for a suitcase to pack some belongings in for a week. Figuring she would mostly be talking to people, eating, and sleeping, she planned on packing light and leave her weapon here in her room. Spare clothing, including the fancy dress she had worn when she and Mao had protected the wedding in Rose Garden, as well as hygienic items for her own sake were packed into the case.
Sadly the packing didn't take up her entire day, so she turned to the records of Lamia Scale to scour for bits of information about where she was going to be heading; Ca-Elum. It didn't take long to find reports from other mages mixed in with pamphlets and the like for the country. Most, if not all of them, said that they place rung out with the hammers of the smiths day in and day out. It was one of the wealthiest nations comprised of mostly blacksmith and forge work. A strange government called a 'democracy' was used, where a 'president' was voted in by the people instead of a royal family taking command. While it was strange, she had no right judging another country and simply continued her studies. The land was tropical by nature, lava flows and the ocean floor providing precious metals for them to use in the use of their smithing projects. Instead of a major ground military, Ca-Elum had a Sub-Navel Force that would put the ships of Hargeon to shame. Even with all this, according to the notes of some mages having traveled there, the people were modest and lived just to meet their needs. 'If only we could live without worry. Life would be a lot easier.' She decided to take pamphlets for all of the countries, figuring that they could come in handy when trying to figure out what they might have, or want, to trade with Fiore. Having spent the entire day studying again, this time even later than before, the bandage wielding mage made her way to her room for her last night in the guild before she was sailing off to leave Fiore and start on her mission.
Her next day felt like she was rushed the entire time. Waking later than she intended, her daily routine had gotten messed up, causing her to skimp on her hair and leave some the the loose ends uncombed as she got herself dressed. ”Can't believe I accidentally slept in on the day the ship leaves!” Grabbing her suitcase, and making sure she had everything, she ran out of her room without turning to see if the door had shut as she hurried along. The girl's run to the port the ship was docked at had to set a new speed record, although there was no time to consider such things, as she hurried onto the ship. No one asked her any questions, nor was anyone on the ship talkative. That is, until it left the port and began the journey to the land of the forge.
”So, what's your reason for visiting Ca-Elum?” A girl, possibly younger than Aiyana by a few years, was standing with a man who seemed to be a smith if one were to judge by the large hammer he had with him.
”I'm going to the trade conference to represent Fiore.” She hadn't been told it was a secret, so she freely gave the information. Who knew, maybe they would show at it, or even someone important that they knew. Any person she made contact with would have a chance at impacting her success in the mission Kihia had given her.
”Ah! My dad here is going too! He runs one of the major weapons forges and is always looking for business opportunities!”
”Now, now, Sylvia. Don't get too excited. She can talk to me once she sees the weapons when we arrive, and decide from there if she wants Fiore to do business with us.” Understanding the man's want for patience, his child simply smiled and nodded before the two walked off to talk to others. Aiyana would spend her time the same way, discussing current events and listening to rumors about the conference until the ship docked at a port in the tropical paradise.
Her first few steps off of the boat were quite awkward, the bandaged woman's body trying to sway like the boat had when she was on it. Once she regained her composure, Aiyana followed a group of people to a massive building. People. Were. Everywhere. If not for stands conveniently placed as to keep the amount of people from coagulating in one spot it would have been chaos. There were people from all over, either talking or yelling at one another. Some were bizarre looking, a few even looking like they were half cat, and she felt like she fit in as she made her way through the stands to talk to major businesses and tradesman from the country she was in and those around them. Many wanted things that would be impossible for her to promise, or were outside her power to do.
Some of the trade options were impossible for her to secure, relations with those countries strained to where one side or the other would be against the agreement. There were however, a few within the realm of possibility. One was with Enca, a country known for fishing and it's sailors. A simple trade of wood for the rebuilding of their ships would allow them access to anything that could be fished up, or even found in the ocean. With the country having the best in ocean hunters, the possibilities were endless on that one. The other trade she managed to pick up was one that Fiore, and it's Rune Knights, would love forever. As she walked around, Aiyana found the father and daughter she had been on the ship with on the way here. Walking up to them, she finally got to see why the man had wanted to wait until they arrived. The weapons were beautiful, even greater than the one's at Ean's shop that she worked at when she wasn't on jobs for the guild.
”Wow, these are gorgeous!”
”Thank you, young woman. My name is Tristan, and my daughter Sylvia was correct about me being one of the major weapon smiths around here. I own the top producing forge for weapons in the country.”
Aiyana continued to look over the weapons, admiration filling her eyes as she ogled each weapon, that seemed just as perfect as the next. Swords, axes, any kind of weapon you could think of, all made with such extraordinary expertise!
”Our country could use weapons of such fine craft. What say you to a contract with the country of Fiore. I can bring it back to the kingdom and they will surely accept a trade for these.”
”I know you're being honest, I like that about you. Let me write out a contract, one I'm sure they won't be able to refuse.”
The 'contract' was one of exclusivity; only Fiore could buy from them unless they so chose to change it themselves. According to Tristan, they had had issues with many of the kingdoms due to political tension, and he trusted Fiore with his weapons over the likes of Bellum or Pergrande.
She spent one more day in the country, trying the food while attempting to find more trades that would make a difference. After finding it fruitless the young woman would make her way back to her home at Lamia Scale, to bring the contracts she held to her guild master; Kihia.
”Wow...last night really did a number on me...” Her hair was a MESS! So much so that she ended up spending the next half hour combing and brushing to get it all straightened out. Once satisfied, the tear drop shaped jewels were attached to the usual places in her hair before her ever baggy shift went on.
