Job Location: Spooky Forest
Job Description: One day you receive a large box from the mailman. After inspecting it, you see that it doesn't say anywhere what's inside or why it's been sent to you. All that is written on the box is your name as the recipient and the initials "SM".
Upon opening the box you discover that it's contents are a hardcover book, which upon closer inspection proves to be a person called Samuel Martin's personal diary, and a voice recorder lacrima, both covered in blood stains. Did that man send you this package? Despite the bad feeling you have, you open the book and skim through the entries.- Information:
- "12 February, Day 647.
Today was a fun day. Me and Mary went on a picnic near the forest and spent the whole day talking about meaningless things. It really was a blissful experience and since she didn't have any problems today we were able to forget about reality, even if for just a day."
"19 February, Day 654.
It happened again. Mary collapsed again today and started mumbling about magical gates and how everything is going to be a nightmare. This is happening more and more often and I am getting really concerned now. No doctor knows what's wrong with her..."
"25 February, Day 660.
This is really getting out-of-hand! With each passing day Mary becomes more and more delirious. I don't know what to do any more. I've contacted every doctor and every mage I could find, but no one knows what's wrong with her. There has to be someone that can help..."
"1 March, Day 664.
This is my last hope. I contacted an exorcist who is said to be able to cure cases like Mary's. He's going to come tomorrow night. Maybe the end of this nightmare would finally come."
"2 March, Day 665.
It's a little before midnight now. The priest is going to come any minute and put Mary's troubled mind to peace once again."
"3 March, Day 666.
I... don't believe it. I remember last night... the purification ceremony... then something happened and I was sent flying, and Mary ran away towards the Spooky Forest. When I came to, the priest was lying on the ground with his heart gourged out. What on Earth happened last night? There's no time to waste, I know she's somewhere in the forest so I have to find her. I'll contact a couple friends from the Rune Knights and we'll set off to search for her. Please be okay, my love..."
From that point onward all pages are ripped from the book. After putting the diary down, you activate the recorder lacrima.
"Date- 4 March. Time- 1:43 PM.
This is Lieutenant Jacob Lars, recording an audio log to document the investigation and search. I am assigned due to my expertise in the field of demonology. It seems that a woman has been possessed by an unknown type of entity, presumably a type of demon, and has escaped in the Spooky Forest. We are currently within the said forest ourselves, having a local guide us through. For some reason when we entered it a thick, almost unnatural, fog descended upon us but we were capable of navigating through the dense vegetation regardless. Currently we are standing in a forest clearing about 2 klicks north of the entrance. So far there's no sight of of neither hostiles nor the woman. It's unnaturally quiet. A bad omen."
"Date- 4 March. Time- 2:30 PM.
This is Lieutenant Jacob Lars documenting the investigation and search for the possessed woman in the Spooky Forest. This is log number two. It's been nearly an hour since the previous log and we've spent the time delving further north into the forest. It's crazy here. Everywhere you look there are huge trees and if you look up there is nothing but branches and leaves. The vegetation on the higher levels of the forest is incredibly dense, so there barely is any light down on ground level. It almost feels like we're alone in another world with no way out, and that damn fog isn't helping either. All this is taking it's toll on the minds of the others.
We're nearing another clearing. I guess we'll rest there for a while."
"Date- 4 March. Time- 2:45 PM.
This is Lieutenant Jacob Lars documenting the investigation. This is audiolog number three. Things are not looking good. The others are getting seriously paranoid and I can't really blame them. This place plays with your mind in a very freaky way. A few minutes ago we continued moving deeper into the forest, following our course north. The guys are really getting worried now. They say that every now and then they see someone's silhouette in the distance, just beyond the fog, watching them. Observing their every move. I have yet to confirm the existence of this shadow, but if it is there then it might be the woman we were sent to find. Next time the silhouette makes an appearance we'll go after it."
"Date- 4 March. Time- 666:666 PM.
*The sound of someone's ragged breath mixed with their crazed running could be heard for several minutes. After that the barely audible thud, as if someone being hit against a tree, interrupts the running*
This is Leu*static*nt Jacob *pant* Lars. We *static*eed help! We...we got sep*static*ed and the *static* took us out *pant* one by one. It's b*static*n watching us all along! Tor*static*ring us while studying it's *pant* prey. It's close, *static* the only one left *static* coming f*static* me. *static* *static* *static* the time *static* thre *static* ourty-five. (after that point the static becomes too great and you can't understand anything)
Having listened to the lacrima, it's as if more questions have emerged than been answered. Who sent you these items? How do they know your name? What happened to the Rune Knights? What did they find in that forest?
It seems that you have no choice but to go there and find out yourself.
Enemies:
Weak: Disturbing sounds- Are those footsteps? A demented laughter somewhere in the distance? A person's dying screams? Is that a whisper you can hear, carried in the wind? This place is really freaky...
(Causes paranoia or similar effects, depending on your character. Strong-willed characters or people with a great ability to maintain their calmness can resist this to a great extent, though not completely. Having multiple weak enemy dices means that these sounds "stack", and so their effect becomes greater and perhaps even capable of breaking even the toughest of people. Duration is 3 posts.)
Normal: Poltergeists- Trees falling down, rocks suddenly shooting towards you, having your body strongly pushed away without any explanation. These anomalies can deal some serious damage or scare the living daylights out of you. They might even separate you from your allies. Be on guard. (Single poltergeist per normal monster encounter.)
Strong: The unknown figure- You can feel it, can't you? Just beyond the mist, it's hollow eyes staring right into your soul, sending ice-cold chills down your spine. No matter where you look it's there. Always watching, always moving. And no matter what you do, it's always just beyond the mist.
(Greatly frightens you, triggering your fight or flight mechanism. Whether you choose to attack or run away and hide depends on your character's personality. If this occurs in the early stages of the mission, before you've encountered the other anomalies much it will not have that great an effect. Encountering this in the later stages, however, will trigger your fight or flight mechanism, guaranteed.
Duration is 4 posts, extended depending on number of strong monster encounter dices rolled.)
Boss: Fear impersonated- Your time is up. The chase is over and now you must die. And it is coming to do just that. The unknown figure that had been stalking you until then finally appears before you, for better or worse. It's a humanoid about 2,5 metres tall, clad in black, but that's all you can make out of the figure.
It's attacks are unnaturally fast, it's reach long and it seems that it can attack you with it's tentacles, cutting you with them and letting you bleed. (This is a B-rank monster. Also please note that defeating it means that it does not die. Instead it escapes back into the mist, which gets raised soon after, and leaves behind several torn pages).
Reward: 1,000 jewels. If the boss has appeared and was defeated, the extra reward is part of the ripped pages from the diary received in the beginning of the mission. Those pages grant access to the next Nightmare Incarnate mission.

Ayato slept comfortably in his log house, dreaming of glorious events that could never exist in the real world- not unless the world became an utopia. It had been his first long rest since his first mission; something he deserved for a while. He had either put himself to work, or was assigned to do multiple tasks since- all on a daily basis. There were jobs, hangouts, adventures, and especially that one huge event where the guild- along with others- challenged and defeated the almighty Ladon. Finally, Ayato found a short time span within all of these events to sleep. However, all good things must come to an end. Ayato awoke eventually, and went through his morning routine. He was a bit slow doing this, his subconscious eager to sleep, though his rightful mind demanding that Ayato wake up further, and proceed through the day. After about two hours, Ayato was about to head to the guild hall, cleansed, dried, filled with food and dressed for a new occasion- all until he heard his mailbox open and close with a large bang. It was so weird to hear it open and close for the first time, which excited Ayato into coming to see what was put into the box.
While he expected to catch the mailman responsible for the content in his mailbox, there was no sign of anyone around. Ayato did not care really, seeing as he sensed no magic nor heard anybody around, and so he once again focused on the mailbox. A package was inside, though it came from a source Ayato was unfamiliar with. The initials "SM" never rang a bell, which left Ayato very curious. He took the package back into his house, then opened it immediately. There were only a couple items inside that left Ayato puzzled. First there was a hardcover book, then a voice recorder. Ayato felt clueless as he investigated these two objects until something extra stunned him. There was blood on both items! Was Ayato really intended to receive this package? Last time he checked, he had not done anything wrong!

"Samuel Martin's Diary" the book indicated, later to be discovered as a diary. What kind of man held a diary nowadays? Ayato expected the voice recorder to be some sort of attachment to the idea, and so he looked both items over again. "Why is there blood on this diary if this guy just went on a simple picnic?" Ayato thought aloud, "Besides, by the looks of this journal entry, he seemed to be with someone special..." Ayato turned the page in the diary, and looked over the second piece of writing. So there was something wrong, after all. The woman, Mary, seemed to have a history for suddenly collapsing, though whenever she did, she always had some last words to say; all of which related to the same topic.
"Magical gates?" Ayato wondered, "Nightmares?" Ayato became more and more curious, resulting in more page-turning throughout this diary. The woman was only getting more delirious, it seemed. This "Samuel Martin" had to be her boyfriend, and must have found something strange about her presence by now. No administration of medical care could identify what was wrong with Mary, nor any Mages who specialized with healing. Perhaps she was cursed, just as Ayato was long ago. Ayato ended up reading the diary over several times, though one number kept staring at him over and over again as he did it: 666. This number, specifically, was rumoured to be the devil's number. What was strange about this number was it was the last full day recorded in the diary before Samuel Martin became even more specific, and only wrote about this day, alone.

No, that was not it. The man kept proceeding with more dates, though he no longer identified the day by number. He only wrote such things as "March 4", not letting the reader know what day that would be since his first adventure with Mary. Ayato had concluded a curse in this woman, after all. Demons still existed, and one had taken over this poor lady. Slowly but surely, as indicated in this book, the lady was losing herself to the darkness, and had even ran somewhere dark, itself: The Spooky Forest. Samuel Martin had become so concerned about her that the Rune Knights became involved. A man by the name "Lieutenant Jacob Lars" now took over the entries while they were no longer in text, but rather the voice recorder beside the book.
Ayato set aside the diary, and listened in on the voice recorder. The woman truly scared the people concerned about her most, and unintentionally lured them into the Spooky Forest- these people obviously aiming to retrieve her. Ayato still predicted this woman was taken over by a demon, and eventually, he had every right to. The lieutenant became less and less calm in every entry, though at some point, all was lost. You could only hear a static noise mostly towards the end until nothing more was heard. Luckily, Ayato was able to stick words together, and so he wrote out the corrected note elsewhere. "This is Lieutenant Jacob Lars." Ayato began, "We need help! We got separated, and the shadowy figure took us out one-by-one. It's been watching us all along! Torturing us while studying its prey. It's close. I'm the only one left, and it's coming for me. The time is three forty-five." Ayato smashed his fist against the table he was writing over, though he dealt no real damage to it, in the process.
He figured he was the recipient of this package because the Rune Knights entrusted him to avenge the victims of this shadowy figure, and either take it out or retrieve it if it was actually the possessed woman. Perhaps Ayato would have to take the woman out if he saw her for the lady's own good. Ayato had never experienced something like this before. The blood on this diary definitely belonged to Samuel Martin, while the blood on the voice recorder most likely belonged to the Lieutenant. This was like one of the horror movies Ayato had seen on his lacrima television. Ayato placed both the diary and the voice recorder back into the package before securing it with tape. He gulped, and slid his book into his jacket. He breathed heavily for a few minutes before he calmed down, and took on a new attitude. Ayato promised himself that he would act fearless, and should even an inch of fear slip into his soul, he would use it to further his strength. Ayato would definitely come back home alive, and this mission would be a success. He was going to go to this Spooky Forest, and solve this damn mystery.

Shortly after these odd moments, Ayato registered himself with the nearest transportation business to receive transport to the Spooky Forest. He needed to sign waivers in case he disappeared for more than a week, or was even reported dead. Registry with a transportation service did make it responsible for your health, anyway. This was how Clover Town worked when it came to healthcare. Like most other occasions, a horse and carriage came by to pick Ayato up, though once they heard his desired destination, they immediately panicked. They informed Ayato that they would dare not to actually enter the Spooky Forest with him, but rather leave him before it, and somewhere convenient to enter the forest- if that was even a proper word to use for such a place.
--
Ayato stood before the entrance to the Spooky Forest after the horse carriage parted away, and was left alone to make his own investigations. Ayato chose to wander slowly through this forest, a blank expression on his face, and the fearless attitude he promised gradually increasing in his soul. Even "his other half" helped adapt him to this new nature; just until the end of this mission. That was the compromise. Ayato continued to proceed into the forest, and surprisingly heard nothing. When he thought about it further, Ayato figured the silence must have made the lieutenant so confident, at first. If he could recall, this was how most horror movies started. The victim started life so happily until endangered by fearsome creatures ahead, then changed into an entirely insane person during his dying moments. Ayato could tell earlier that this was how the whole process came about. The lieutenant's voice was becoming more worrisome in the recorder while Ayato once heard it, so he concluded that no matter the silence now, something dangerous still remained ahead, and Ayato would have to tolerate the fact that he was putting himself in danger if he so choose to proceed with this task, and could not turn back. This was when the whole process of becoming fearless was complete, and Ayato was left without a reason to panic- for now, at least.

Trees suddenly began to fall, several of them all at extreme speeds. Rocks also headed his way, in which case Ayato swiftly activated his weakest spell Unsheathed Seeker. The magic appeared in Ayato's left hand, while the sword in his right; both prepared instantly to activate this spell, though there was something still wrong. Three counts of supernatural forces suddenly smashed Ayato in the chest, and sent him flying. The spell absorbed the rocks, though Ayato was left coughing blood against another dead tree, a huge collapse of forestry ahead of him. Somebody was definitely existent here, and it was quite powerful. Ayato could not allow himself to give into the fear this unknown creature was trying to bestow upon him, and so he silenced himself. He inserted his finger in some of the blood coughed up from his mouth, and placed it on his blade. His Unsheathed Seeker was a fail, though it gave a gateway to even better spells. This was when Ayato remembered something important: The Ring of Yin. Ayato activated it, and soon enough, saw through the darkness from an extreme distance away. The figure could not be pointed out this way, though with this ability, Ayato could see a clear pathway down the forest.
Ayato slowly got up after that huge impact. He had a good portion of his energy already, and ached all over. Cuts were all over his arms and legs while his clothes were a bit torn, though Ayato had to proceed, anyway. He could not afford to lose himself to the shadowy figure rumoured in both the diary and voice recorder, nor give up his sanity to hunt the unknown down. If Ayato lost his sanity here, no matter what the result of this mission, his new personality would be far too dangerous for Blue Pegasus to accept. He would be far too fragile, and would be best to enter a Dark Guild. Heck, that demon would probably return to him the moment it found out Ayato had lost his sanity and consume him entirely. Ayato laughed hysterically at the thoughts, finding them to be a complete joke. "You...messed...with the wrong...guild..." Ayato commented. He knew something lived from afar. He just needed to catch it.

Ayato slowly helped himself over all of the forestry that once collapsed so suddenly. Technically, he could have been getting himself closer to the one responsible for his current damage, though who was Ayato to judge? This figure seemed to be invisible during this time, and obviously so. There was no telling what the shadowy figure looked like so far, and by the looks of it, the figure could most likely become transparent, as well. The Ring of Yin had the ability to not just allow sight from a far distance, but to see through the darkness at any extent. Therefore, if the figure was indeed shadowy, it was either hiding or very skillful with its monstrous nature. Ayato felt the bruises release pain throughout his body, and so he used his lineage to clear himself of his wounds- though his attire was still left a bit torn. There was no way he was going to forgive the figure responsible for all of this after the pain Ayato once experienced- after it lured Ayato this far! Ayato had to admit. Periodically, he felt a slight shiver in his spine, though he could not control it. It was so rare, yet still existent. Under a supernatural circumstance, the figure had inevitably touched the Blue Pegasus Mage's soul.
Ayato was angered more than anything, though he hid it all with a poker face. There was nothing to be ashamed of, now that Ayato thought about. Even the lieutenant had lost his mind, but to a degree too far to take back. Ayato could not afford that. Albeit, there was nothing wrong with being scared. The fact that Ayato was controlling himself this well was quite impressive. He was yet to confess his fright with the exception of that rare shiver placed upon his soul. If there was one thing Ayato had learned from that previous impact, it was not to talk. Any sudden sound would trigger this figure again, and Ayato was the only one present for it to attack. His movements, therefore, had become silenced, and Ayato maneuvered himself as if he were a detective. He was looking everywhere, though without a trace of instability in his soul. If there was anything Ayato was more proud about in his current state, it was that he was still sane.

Disturbing noises soon echoed throughout the forest, and never decided to leave. Demented laughter hovered over the forest, then the sound of footsteps. It was impossible for anyone to think that something or someone was present in this forest that nobody deserved to see. However, there was always the chance that mind games were currently hovering over these forests instead of true laughter and footsteps. Ayato concluded with the latter and therefore kept moving gently. That rare shiver became more frequent, which made Ayato wonder if anyone could see it. Before there was an inevitable shiver in Ayato's soul, yet now there was paranoia to accompany it. Slowly but surely, this unknown figure was cursing Ayato, yet Ayato still held the upper hand. His fearless attitude was like a roller-coaster during the time. It gradually decreased at some points, but increased quickly after. The only problem was with every sudden presence of the figure, that decrease aforementioned was becoming bigger, and the chances of Ayato hitting rock bottom were only getting bigger.
It was then a pair of demonic eyes pierced through the forest, and sunk into Ayato's mind. The presence of the figure was confirmed, yet not entirely seen. Ayato could hear it moving, and there certainly were no mind games behind it. It was always watching him and moving alongside him, yet Ayato never expected it. The laughter grew strong, and for some reason, Ayato had an immeasurable need to fight. However, there was another voice that stopped the young man in his tracks, and that was the book he held. Ayato looked at it, his eyes soulless. Seitenshi Ayato!" The book figuratively spoke in Ayato's mind, "Are you not the chosen one to hold the former GENESIS, and the current END?" This made Ayato recall the purpose he had for holding the book. That book literally came to him after the curse from a demon lifted from Ayato's soul long ago, which then introduced the sword Ayato also held, except upgraded at this point. "Enough screwing around!" The book spoke again, once more in a fatherly manner, "I leave it up to you whether or not you want this damn creature to consume your soul! However, I leave this question to you: Are you the chosen one?"

"I am the Eternal Flame..." Ayato spoke, "There is no force in the universe that can take that away..." Ayato stood suddenly for a moment, and examined his book. E.N.D: what did it stand for. Ayato recalled what he had just called himself back then, and afterwards, smiled. The first letter stood for Eternity. Ayato remembered something important about his past. When his sister was about to endure a curse, Ayato took it for her, and embraced it to the fullest so it could not co-exist with another person. Ayato vowed to live with it inside him for as long as he lived until the curse could be lifted. In other words, if Ayato cared for someone, he forever did something in their favour; forever being another word for eternity. Eternally, Ayato did other good deeds for others. In this sense, he was the chosen one for one letter in this book.
A white magic circle appeared over the book, then lit up with white flames. "Chapter TWO: Devastation!" Ayato announced. Unfortunately, this unknown figure had triggered the fighting mechanisms in Ayato, though the male did not mind. He was going to fight at his fullest now that the unknown figure had forcefully invited him, somehow. Fifty white fireballs immediately launched themselves in a bombardment of attacks forward while Ayato lunged his sword. He planned to hunt the unknown figure down by force, just as it forcefully used him as a tool to fight nothing, at all. Little did Ayato know, he could not determine whether or not he was actually impacting the unknown figure or not. He could only tell in his mind that the unknown figure was always watching him, and always walking along with him.

The white fireballs did absolutely nothing other than have more forestry ahead collapse, though Ayato's initial plan worked all along. Due to this action, the battlefield was limited. Therefore, if the unknown figure desired to go for Ayato, it would have to pay the risk of witnessing Ayato break down more of its forest so the true battle could begin. As of this moment, the laughter was all over the place, footsteps were heard in all directions, and piercing eyes from afar were always looking at the Blue Pegasus Mage. Albeit, the mage still held himself intact. After Ayato used the spell, the white magic circle over his book disappeared, and the magic energy that once surrounded his sword vanished. The book closed itself, and gave Ayato another opportunity to decipher its meaning. Ayato had discovered what the "E" meant, but nothing more at this point.
This whole time, the unknown figure was successfully playing with Ayato's mind, though not to the point in which Ayato would verbally confess fear, nor lose his sanity. In fact, every time Ayato looked at his book, he became ignorant of the unknown figure and his surroundings, and his focus adjusted to the title. The "N" was what Ayato had to decipher next. He ran his finger over the letter, then imagined what the letter could stand for under these circumstances. Ayato always had two options he could take in this job; either to give up, lose his sanity and admit fear to the unknown figure, awakening its presence solely to consume him, or continue to fight, seek the unknown figure, and rid of it. One of these options, Ayato would never perform, and his mindset right now was never to give in to the darkness, no matter how much it affected him during this time. This word never had to be what the "N" stood for. Eternity, or rather a lifelong existence from an average Mage's experience to an utopia was the goal of the beholder of this book. To live eternally for a heavenly experience- a world of light- was to never allow oneself to be consumed by darkness. However, darkness could not be the word "D" stood for, or else the title would not make sense. If the word "never" came after the word "eternity" in a title, the following and final word had to be something opposite to the concept of eternal life. And there was only one thing that opposed eternal life: death.

"Eternal Life; Never Death!": that is what the title of this book stood for. Ayato dropped to the ground in a sitting position, hyperventilating as he felt a soothing wind pass by him. He was recovering spiritually now that he found out the meaning of his book, and the message behind it. If Ayato would have allowed himself to be consumed by the darkness, he would have followed the concept of death, seeing as that was what the unknown figure seemingly desired. Like hell it would give any mercy, anyway. It probably felt infuriated from Ayato since the moment he dared to enter its forest, and had learned about its story. The possessor of this book was intended to be a Legal Mage who strove for the goal of eternal life; an utopia for everyone. A heaven for all to enjoy. Ayato laughed hysterically, though sanely. He almost followed the path of hell and nearly let himself go, had the unknown figure's tricks lasted any longer. There was no longer a need for Ayato to be scared now that he knew the only power this unknown figure held were mind games hoping to make others lose their sanity and cower in endless fear. Ayato would have definitely been a victim of these mind games had the book not presented itself in a fatherly manner earlier. To be more specific, it was actually Daisuke in the form of his own book who saved Ayato in this very moment.
Ayato stopped panting and got up again. He rose his sword, then declared another spell. "Chapter TWO: Descend!" Ayato called. He took into the account the full extent of the Ring of Yin, then focused midpoint in regards to how far the Ring of Yin's power could travel. Right in the center of this distance was where Ayato located a new spell, which unleashed a fifty foot white fireball from the sky to hit the ground ahead, fifty feet away. The gigantic fireball broke through the forest, and collided with the ground brilliantly. Most of the forest in this area was incinerated, though only in front of Ayato, and out of his way, of course. Ayato did not plan to hurt himself with his own spell. Screaming swapped with the laughter that hovered over the forest, and the eyes that planned to pierce through Ayato's soul shifted into a deeper gaze. "As if you are going to get me a second time!" Ayato shouted, "Sacred Sixth Sense: ACTIVATE!" Slowly, Ayato felt his energy heal, though not by much at all. If there was anything left from that nightmare at this point, it was that the footsteps became so loud, the actual figure appeared. At this point, Ayato was more than ready to fight, even by his own will, this time.

The unknown figure appeared, and immediately attacked Ayato. He fully activated his book and sword to have them glow. Ayato felt his magic and energy increase before he instantaneously protected him with his sword right after. This unknown figure was incredibly fast, and strong in that matter. Ayato used his utmost strength and speed to shift the sword as fast as he could until the figure was angered, and wildly kicked against Ayato's blade, surprisingly sending him backwards. The unknown figure was just getting warmed up, though Ayato smirked. "Perhaps you should pay attention to liquid nearby..." Ayato suggested jokingly. In that single collision, the blood Ayato once prepared amongst his blade triggered his lineage, and spilled the liquid into the figure. The figure screamed as loudly as it could, for it was poisoned. No matter how annoyingly fast that demon was, Ayato could at least poke it, though that supreme force it used really got to him.
Ayato felt at an all-time low here, almost as low as his energy when he fought the dark wizard. Meanwhile, the unknown figure was trying to remove the poison from itself by expelling its own power. "That, I will not allow!" Ayato remarked, "Chapter TWO: Burning Soul!" Ayato slammed his sword against the ground while his book was open, a white magic circle atop. A trail of white flames acted more swiftly than any other skill Ayato had used, and ran right into the figure remotely. The trail burst before the shadowy figure, and engulfed it in flames. Through these flames, Ayato could see its piercing eyes. He could see right through the damn thing. He could not tell if it was Mary, though it was definitely a humanoid of some kind. It was very large, and had tentacles to support its body. Albeit, it was still suffering from the fire.

The white flames suddenly came to a stop as the unknown devil launched itself out, and flew right towards Ayato. Again, he blocked with his sword, though the monster used a tentacle to push Ayato over. It looked over Ayato while he was on the ground, and used its piercing eyes to their utmost degree. The laughter was out of control, and the unknown figure looked at Ayato as if the Blue Pegasus Mage was about to die. However, Ayato just smirked, then swiftly used his Skilled Elucidator to chop at the monster's ankle. He separated the monster's ankle and foot from its leg, putting the demon on a limb and having it also fall back. Shortly after, an eruption of white flames burst from underneath the monster, and encased it in a series of fiery pain once more. This was one of the abilities of the Skilled Elucidator.
After the eruption stopped, Ayato stood up while the unknown figure was roasted on the ground. He prepared his greatest move of all time, and used it as if there was no tomorrow. "ETERNAL FLAME: ACTIVATE!" Ayato declared. Ayato was encircled by his own white flames, though they did nothing to him, of course- he was their rightful owner. Ayato was powered up extremely as he moved in a flash towards the enemy- 160 miles per hour, to be exact. The unknown figure got up just in time to see its own body get sliced in half, the roaring flames from Ayato's blade and body covering the creature in the process. The unknown figure screamed in pain until it simply fell back, stopped, then let itself sink into the mist. Ayato knew by the way the creature screamed that the fight was over, though he was surprised to see the unknown figure left something behind, unharmed despite all of those flames. Ayato slowly crawled to it as he had little energy left. There were extra pages to the diary here, though Ayato had no idea what to do with them. He simply picked them up, got up, and ran towards the exit of the forest.

Ayato safely escaped the forest with the pages leftover in his grasp. The unknown figure had disappeared, though it clearly revealed a chance for Ayato to escape, but nothing more than to do so unless he wanted to embrace a second encounter. It seemed this unknown figure could be defeated, yet not killed. Ayato could not even tell if the thing was Mary or not. All he knew was that he just fought a demon, and beat it. That was all he needed to know. What he was worried about, however, was the fact that his chances of losing himself inside that forest were high. That unknown figure really did play a lot of games with Ayato, and it almost made him feel lost in the unknown figure's world. Ayato looked over to his book, and nodded towards it. He literally thanked a book before he slid it inside his torn jacket. Much of the forest had collapsed while Ayato was escaping it, leaving a good portion of it on the ground, currently.
Ayato ran to an emergency station at full force since he knew the horse rider was unsure of when to return, and probably concluded that it was best not to check out what Ayato was doing. And that horse rider did the right thing. It could have been involved in those games, had it been there to watch. Albeit, Ayato was safe, regardless of his transportation not being there, and so he called upon another service. He sounded really endangered, and truly was so the traveler would come as soon as possible. He had some great evidence to find out the full history behind the diary he was given, yet he could not allow himself to stay along the areas of the Spooky Forest to read it any longer. While the service was aiming to get to him urgently, Ayato ran away from the forest, and down a path of light. He knew not of where to go exactly, though he knew this path was going to lead to a safer place. He ended up catching with his transportation eventually, getting out of that damned forest area, and to the possession of someone to care for. Again, he was assigned to a horseback rider with a carriage to stay in. Ayato never felt so happy to receive a ride home in his life. Truthfully, he did get scared, though never did he lose his sanity, nor lose himself to the darkness. He simply laid back and rested while the horseback rider travelled back to Clover Town at full speed. "No worries bud. You'll be home before you know it!" The horseback rider cheered. Ayato sighed, smiled, and nodded in response.

Awhile after, by means of two distinct forms of transportation, Ayato was back in Clover Town. He felt sick from all of those mind games, and forces to his chest that felt like they came from the devil, himself. Many were asking what was wrong with him, though Ayato simply moved on, and ignored what they had to say. It was clear he just wanted to get home as soon as possible. However, while he was on the way, Ayato figured it would be best to calm his heartbeat down further with some water, and so he purchased some. Ayato found it hard to believe he did not supply himself with food or drinks when going to the mission. Albeit, Ayato promised himself not to go back to that place for a very long time. It was obvious that thing could not die, and was probably awaiting their next encounter. And for some reason, Ayato felt destined to meet that thing again sometime. He sure hoped it was Mary so he would not actually have to fight a real demon.
Ayato pulled a cloth from his torn jacket to clean his sword of the blood both the figure and Ayato produced upon it. The sword looked as good as new quickly, though Ayato imagined if the sword had a soul, the soul would feel much more in pain than Ayato right now. It had tolerated fatal blows, and nearly parted ways with Ayato by force. Had it not been for the sword's skill, Ayato would have died back there, even while under his Eternal Flame Mode. He punched a wall nearby, upset that he almost lost again in a mission. This was ridiculous! The only sort of death Ayato could imagine him suffering was of old age or disease. Never did Ayato imagine dying in battle. He looked up to the sky and asked for guidance. Alas, he had an epiphany too. If he recalled, one of his spells was called Burning Soul. It ignited the soul, then unleashed the pain inside against the person responsible. That is what the spell had done to the figure, anyway. Perhaps that is what Ayato possessed: a burning soul.

Ayato soon arrived at his house, in which case he picked up the pace towards the couch, and sat upon it gently. Valin, his pet, kept him company while she snuggled with him. Ayato did not understand why he had not asked for Valin's assistance lately, yet after he experienced those experiences back in the Spooky Forest, if he could do it again, he still would not take his dragon. Even so, Valin was very strong. Her form made her very evasive, while her long body also allowed great reach to take out other animals and mythical beasts. She was the highlight of the shadow sometimes, which Ayato was happy to have alongside him
"How about I get you something to eat?" Ayato suggested. Valin simply nodded, and went to her large bowl. Ayato got some leftover meat, and dropped it into the bowl after cooking it. Meat was what Valin enjoyed most, and as a dragon of her kind, she could eat almost whatever a human being could eat without any issues. Ayato stared at her while she ate, and found he was guilty of keeping her home for so long. "You've really been eager to hangout with me lately, huh?" Ayato remarked. Again, Valin nodded, though this time, followed with her own way of hugging. Ayato went on his knees and pet his dragon. She really was nice, and Ayato had treated her like nothing lately, just leaving her be. "After you eat, we are going to go out for a walk, okay?" Ayato informed. Valin immediately went back to eat her food while Ayato turned on his Lacrima Vision. On the screen was a report on why the Spooky Forest should not be a place for transportation to take even a Mage on any occasion. Ayato sighed heavily, then simply laughed. He did almost put that horseback rider in harm's way, didn't he?

Ayato decided to take a two hour nap before taking Valin out for a walk. He really needed to lighten himself up and free his mind of all the bad imagery it held due to that recent mission. Sure, he was bound to have nightmares, though Ayato understood that potentially facing these fears over a stupid dream would be for the best rather than in reality. Ayato complained a lot in his sleep after having a series of nightmares haunt him, though they were quickly banished by his mind. Ayato knew a dream was a dream, and when something was real, anyways. Slowly but surely, Ayato woke up calmly, and immediately proceeded to clean himself up. It was almost as if he repeated his morning routine over. On the contrary, before he did that, Ayato almost forgot the extra pages he gathered, and so he slipped them into the package that came with the diary and voice recorder beforehand. He was going to have to send this package back to the Rune Knights, notifying that he had taken care of the investigation, and lived.
After officially waking up, cleansed, dried, and dressed, Ayato took Valin out for a walk, as promised. Valin was amazed the moment she saw the outside world after a while, which again, bothered Ayato. It was almost as if he was being overprotective of Valin lately, and kept her imprisoned in his house. That would not happen anymore. On the way to town, Ayato promised Valin some more times like this, where the two could just enjoy themselves, and get energized by a nice walk. "So where do you want to go first?" Ayato asked. Valin swung her tail around to point to a park. "Of course!" Ayatp replied. Valin needed to leash to be controlled. In fact, it was only Ayato's words that kept her staying at home- until now, that is.

While Ayato was at the park, he was immediately reported to someone to get Valin a leash. It seemed these people- though they had exotic pets too- did not trust a lively dragon travelling through a park. Ayato simply sighed, and put the leash given to him on Valin. "No worries. These people are just silly." Ayato whispered to Valin. Again, he felt ashamed this his pet and most likely best friend had to go through a time like this. However, this was a place Valin preferred, and she did not seem to mind being held with a leash; especially with Ayato to hold it. Ayato silently and calmly strolled alongside Valin to a place less populated in the park.
"Here we are!" Ayato announced, pointing to a rainbow nearby, "Isn't it beautiful?" Valin nodded, and picked up the pace a little. The poor dragon did not realize a rainbow was a mere mirage, and so it felt like the dang thing could be climbed. "No Valin!" Ayato yelled in a joking manner, "What you see is only what you see...it's not real..." Valin pouted, and turned herself around. She decided to head home after the disappointment, which made Ayato pout. He did not want to return home with Valin so quickly! Albeit, Valin forced him home, and so home was where the two went. Ayato was sure to pick up a snack for Valin to calm her down. Normally she enjoyed a white-chocolate cookie for normal occasions, though since this was a bad time, Ayato bought her two. "We're home again." Ayato declared, "Want to play chess against me?" That's right. Valin knew how to play chess, and she was just as smart as the average human being when it came to playing. Ayato accepted, and set up the table to play.
The two took a long time taking turns while they played chess: Valin and Ayato. There was no clock to determine when a player's turn should end, so the two just took all the time they needed. Ayato started and after a certain amount of moves, had his set of chess pieces in a castle formation. His two pawns were ahead, followed by the knights, then the bishops, then a queen and rook with the king in the far corner. Valin had done the same thing, and prepared for all-out collision. It was at that point in the game when concentration counted most. The two did not care as much with their pawns, who could only move forward by one spot each turn, though they both used defensive maneuvers to keep every piece intact for as long as they could.
Valin eventually gained the upper hand, and eliminated both knights with her bishops, using Ayato's own maneuvers to trap them before their elimination. "The mistakes I make..." Ayato pitied, "Oh well! I'll be sure to counter!" And with that, Ayato eliminated Valin's bishops with her knights. Shortly after, however, Valin sent out her rooks, and started knocking out Ayato's pawns one-by-one. Valin's strategic acts became stronger every game, and Ayato was proud to be losing, for the first time. Eventually, Ayato lost all of his pawns with the cost of one of Valin's rooks and a couple of her pawns. The two kept eliminating each other's pieces, though Valin suddenly threw a move that Ayato did not expect. Before he knew it, Ayato's queen was eliminated by Valin's queen. "Impossible!" Ayato remarked, "I have never lost to you!" Ayato looked down while Valin kept moving her pieces forward, and eventually called checkmate on Ayato. He smiled. "You win, Valin!" Ayato cheered. Valin hugged him to celebrate, then patted him with her tail to give her another cookie for her victory. Ayato laughed, and gladly did so.

Valin shortly fell asleep after she defeated Ayato in that game of chess. Ayato was quite embarrassed, though he was proud that Valin was becoming more intelligent on a daily basis. He was obviously not that good with the game of chess, anyway, and would most likely lose to any other citizen of Clover Town. Speaking of which, that reminded Ayato that he needed to send this package, along with the extra pages, for the Rune Knights to investigate. As the official recipient, Ayato was going to be the rightful handler of these items, whether he liked it or not, so all he could do was have the Rune Knights check over what he was given from the shadowy figure. He was sure to make the box really secure after he packed the diary, voice recorder and extra pages within it- every item cleaned.
A few hours after the package was received, Rune Knights came to Ayato's door. "Was everything okay?" one Rune Knight asked. Ayato nodded, then scratched his head. "The figure I defeated took off into a dark mist, and left extra pages to the diary." Ayato remarked just in case the Rune Knights did not notice, "I could not find the bodies to any of the victims of this figure, nor could I tell if the figure was Mary or not." The Rune Knights sighed, and patted Ayato on the shoulders. "There is definitely more that awaits us..." another Rune Knight commented, "Perhaps these extra pages will serve as additions to the story, though we will have to put them through a detector to see if any of the magic the--" Ayato decided to interrupt the Rune Knight after he assumed the figure used magic. "The figure only uses curses." Ayato informed, "Signs nobody can ignore. It can control the forest it inhabits, make you hear its laughter wherever you are, make you feel paranoid, and make you feel as though the thing is right next to you, and staring at you the entire time." The Rune Knights were completely frightened after they heard the news. They spoke amongst one another, and concluded that they would have to send an entire task force into the Spooky Forest during their next encounter. However, this was just a plan based on fright alone. Ayato doubted they would actually do so.

The Rune Knights and Ayato eventually ended their conversation, and shook hands with one another. "We shall talk again another time." Ayato remarked, "It was great assisting you, though I ask that you do not visit that place for a long time. It is far too dangerous." Ayato did not want to admit he almost died in there, or else the Rune Knights would not even be able to sleep properly tonight. He just wanted to leave them be as calmly as they could without any further comments. Every time he spoke about the story, Ayato was brought back to the moment in which he first came across the story, and a shiver travelled down his spine. That shiver was going to stay for a while, though Ayato did not mind it. He was still a bit sick, anyway, so he presumed that the shiver would also go away with the illness.
Valin woke up shortly after the Rune Knights left, and saw Ayato right there to comfort her. He was sitting down on the ground, watching Lacrima Vision. Valin hopped onto his lap, and Ayato pet her until she decided to fall asleep again. Valin had a habit of falling asleep multiple times in one day, though never when outside the house. It was all due to instincts, and nothing more. "I still need to return to the guild, don't I?" Ayato muttered, "Valin, looks like we're going on another adventure." Ayato noted this intentionally to make Valin feel like she was going to participate in a scary mission, though Ayato was only teasing her. He was simply going to the guild to tell them the news, and receive treatment on his torn clothing and still-existent injuries. Not in the slightest was this a fun task, nor would it be something Ayato would want to remember. Of course, this all came with a cost. If Ayato wanted to remember the official name of his book, he would also have to remember the experience he went through. He figured he could always remember the name of the book another time, and so he decided not to record this experience in his book. Ayato simply walked to his guild, and did as he intended. He was immediately put under care, and rested up in the guild with Valin until further notice.
