    Private Housekeeping!

    Job Information:
While whistling a tune, Enola approached the old dying house as if it were heaven on Earthland. It was a job she could finally enjoy: housekeeping! She certainly had her work cut out for her too. The lawn was hideously overgrown – it clearly hadn’t been chopped down in weeks. The strong smell of mold ravaged her nostrils as she stepped up to the unstable porch which felt like it could collapse at any moment. Dust painted the windows, preventing anyone from peaking inside; although, one of the windows possessed a series of cracks as if it had been punched.

Enola wasn’t even sure if anyone lived actually there or if it was just a nasty prank. She stepped up to the door frame, her feet planted firmly on a gnarled “welcome” rug. She placed her hand on the doorknob but deeply regretted it as an entire layer of dust stuck to her white gloves.

The door opened with a creeeeaaaak!

The inside of the house pretty much reflected the outside: decrepit and dirty. It was almost the carbon copy of a lame haunted house: creaking floor boards that felt like they would fall out underneath whoever was walking, a mesh of cob webs clung to every possible corner, and the only available light source was an old lantern resting on a hook in the foyer. Strangely, it was already lit for her.

Right then, time to get to work!

Enola grabbed the lantern and investigated the house to see what needed to be done. The list was tremendous:

    • Dirty dishes littered the sink.
    • The floors and walls were dusty.
    • All the paintings were crooked.
    • The toilets needed scrubbing.
    • The laundry baskets were filled to the brim.
    • The sheets of every bed were stained with various tarnishes.
    • There was even a leak in the roof, which was probably the source of the moldy smell.

Enola proceeded to work on her rather large list for several hours. For the most part, it was peaceful and without incident. That is, until she heard a growl as she worked on the dishes.

    “Hmm? Oh!”

She nearly dropped the plate she was cleaning into the sink as she turned around to see a large, vicious-looking dog staring up at her.

    “A dog! How cute!”

The dog, whom Enola guessed to be Frank, snarled at her and pounced. She lunged out of his way and ran off through a hallway; the dog, of course, followed after her.

“Bad, Frank! Down!” She comically tried yelling at the beast as she ran away from its sharp teeth. Eventually she reached a set of stairs and shuffled up it, hoping it would at least slow the dog down. When she made it to the top, she reached for her feather duster spear and spun around. As she spun, she swung the spear in an arc and, miraculously, whipped the dog on the side of the head.

Frank whimpered and immediately ran back down the stairs, hiding who-knows-where.

Enola collapsed her spear back into a regular feather duster and placed it back on her waist. With sweat on her forehead, she sighed, “Now where was I…”

When she made it back down the stairs, Enola found a swarm of flies invading her still=dirty dishes as if they were one of God’s plagues. She, keeping her wits together, searched under the sink counter for bug spray. Voila! She took the spray and went to work mercilessly on the bug swarm, taking not even the maggots’ hostage.

Once the insect genocide was over, she resumed her work on the dishes for another thirty minutes until finished. Upon overlooking her list, Enola found that the only thing left was the leaky roof, apparently in the upstairs bedroom.

She entered said bedroom to investigate the damage but was instead greeted by…

“Frank! Off the bed! I just cleaned those sheets an hour ago!” Big bad Frank took it upon himself to growl at the maid, who retorted with a hateful stare.

“I said OFF THE BED!” The dog certainly listened that time. Frank, severely frightened, looked as if he’d seen Orion the Hunter as he jumped out the window. Despite, being on the second floor, Frank landed on the ground below unscathed; evidently, he feared Enola more than he did gravity.

I bet I won’t be seeing him again.

The leaky roof proved to be a simple problem to solve: Enola, after searching and finding a roll of duct tape, placed several strands of tape over the leak. The solution to the leaky roof might have been a tad childish, but Enola was a maid, not a construction worker.

Bong! The large clock down stairs signaled eight o’ clock.

“Time to go home!” Enola waddled for the front door, planning to come back in a few days, after her client’s vacation was over, for the payment. She gleamed with pride, pleased with her handy work on the house.

“Eek!” Before she could leave, Enola spotted yet another swarm of flies rushing through the hallway. As with the first swarm, she went looking for the bug spray, came back, and committed mass murder. There were no survivors.  After sweeping the tiny dead bodies, she place the insects into the trashcan and gave it a good spray for good measure.

With that, she left the now-pristine house.
