    Birth

"I can't believe I finally have a baby and it's a girl! Unbelievable!" Mother shrieked. But Papa wasn't listening. He was too busy falling instantly in love with his daughter. He smiled at the newborn, feeling like the luckiest man in the universe. "I mean really! Honestly! I wanted a boy! She'll be useless to me! She'd be better off on the street with all the rest of the unwanted children."
That got Papa's attention. "What do you mean, unwanted? This little girl is a blessing, and with your condition, I'd think you'd be happy no matter if it were a boy or girl." He gently pulled the baby up out of her crib and cradled her in his arms. Then he turned on his wife. "Now you listen to me. You will help me take care of her, whether you like it or not!" And with that, he stomped out of the room to welcome his daughter home.

    Childhood

"Get out there and groom your father's horse. And don't screw up again!"Mother shouted at Delia. Being the obedient little girl she was, she happily skipped out to the well. Bucket in hand, she leaned over the edge to hook it to the rope. The village bully, Max, snuck up behind he, intending to scare the unsuspecting little girl. He yelled and jumped out at her. She slapped his arm playfully. "Max, don't do that! I could've fallen-"
All of a sudden, she slipped on some loose dirt backwards into the well. Max ran to get help. Delia backflopped into the water, hitting hard. She held her breath until she had to breathe again. In the moment she took to take a breath, she started sinking. It seemed an eternity until she had to let go of her breath. Just as she had resolved to fate, she felt a pair of arms wrap around her. A minute later, she could breathe again. When she came to, her father was crouched over her. He smiled and sighed. "You scared me, Delia. I thought I lost you." His daughter sat up and frowned.
"It's not like it would matter. I'm useless. I can't do anything right."
    "What?! Who told you that?"
