    Spoiler:

Aegiel had hunted for the Job Board for what felt like years, only to find it strung up in plain sight. He sighed mournfully to himself before tearing a random paper of the notice. "The Rarest Flower.......located in the Spooky Forest...huh." He scratched his head, bemused. There wasn't much detail to go off on here, but it seemed simple enough. This was his first job, after all. No time to be picky. A surge of pride ran through him, from the tip of his toes to the top of his crown. He jumped into the air with a whoop and sprinted out of his new guild, headed straight for the Spooky Forest. That flower wouldn't know what hit it.

Aegiel panted in exhaustion. How hard could it be to find a freakin forest?! Apparently, very. He sighed deeply, restraining his anger and finding that inner calm that always set things to right. Then he closed his eyes, spun in a circle, and set off. Luck, at least, would not fail him.

He opened his eyes as he heard the crackle of leaves underfoot. Squinting at his surroundings, he realized that he had made it to the Spooky Forest with his eyes closed. Aegiel silently thanked whatever god had seen fit to include this nifty ability in his magical arsenal, and took a good look at the surrounding area. It was eerily quiet. No birdsong, animal cries. Not even the wind dared whisper through the forest of tangled branches overhead.  Aegiel peered into a hollow log. "Here, flower. Come to big brother, he's waiti-OOF". Aegiel picked himself off the ground, glaring daggers at the traitorous log that had the nerve to trip him. He put his hands on his hips, ready to stare the stupid lump of wood into submission.

A ways behind him, something hidden watched the scene unfold with calculating eyes, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce.

"...and THAT's why it's a bad idea to trip a mage. You got the message? Eh? I think you do." Aegiel gave the log one last kick before marching away, his duty done. Then he froze. Was something watching him? He wasn't sure whether to be embarrassed or frightened. He prepared himself for the worst.

"YyyyyyyAAAAA!" cried three goblin munchkins as they hurled themselves at Aegiel. Aegiel, who was standing stock-still and gazing at the howling creatures with a mix of incredulity and horror. Big mistake. The first one crashed into his leg, and as Aegiel's face smushed into the soft dirt, he recalled a having similar experience not even a minute ago. The other two creatures missed their mark completely, smashing into the grove of dense ferns behind him. One moaned, down for the count.

Aegiel picked himself of the ground, narrowly avoiding the swing of a tiny club. He finally had his first clear view of the goblins, and his first reaction was to giggle. Their chubby red cheeks gave them the appearance of pouting toddlers, and their ragged clothes really weren't that much more than dirty diapers. The one nearest to Aegiel squealed in rage and charged, swiping at him madly. Unfortunately for the little piglet, Aegiel was in his element, and he gracefully sidestepped the crude attack. His serpentine instincts rose to the fore, and Aegiel let loose.

He sprinted straight up to the enraged goblin and breathed out, enveloping it in a cloud of toxic gas. It shuddered, and went still. In the blink of an eye, he slid his wooden staff from its leather strap and whacked the poor creature over the head. It fluttered gracefully to the ground and was still. Aegiel listened carefully for the third goblin. It must have hidden itself in order to ambush him, Aegiel mused. The thing was almost...smart. Leaves crunched faintly behind him, and Aegiel sighed. Or not. He swung around in a defensive crouch, ready for the the goblin to hurl itself at him. His eyes widened in horror.

    The goblin was dead.

Its ragged corpse hung in the mouth of a snarling wolf, blood dripping from its jaws. Aegiel spun around at the sound of snapping twigs, and found himself surrounded by three more wolves. A pack. He silently cursed at his luck, and thought quickly. Wolves were easily frightened. If they think they have a chance at you, they'll take it. "Intimidation, then," he whispered to himself, nodding once. And the small matter of protection. He reached inwards, then out. In an instant, the world had changed ever so slightly, with Aegiel the only one the wiser. He waited.

The first wolf snarled and leapt, dropping the goblin's lifeless corpse as it sprinted through the grasses at Aegiel. The rest followed suit. Aegiel didn't move a muscle, and prayed silently that this wasn't the worst mistake he'd ever made. One shot at his throat like a bullet from less than five feet away. Aegiel felt the air tighten like a stretched rope, and the wolf shot right past him, missing its target completely. He winced as the next two wolves barreled into him, their sharp claws shredding his clothes and gouging shallow gashes on his forearms. A seconds later, they squealed in confusion as the their legs slipped out from under them. They tumbled into each other and scratched one another other in confusion. Probably wondering what the hell was going on. Aegiel barely had time to smirk before the last wolf charged, tripped over a vine, and fell flat on its snout. Aegiel frowned. Now that was odd. He was 99% sure that that had nothing to do with his magic. The bewildered creatures brushed themselves off and circled him warily. The mage smiled, and whispered something to the inside of his shirt. It was his turn now.

Post by Aegiel 31st May 2014, 5:34 pm

Aegiel felt for the power that he commanded, demanding that it reveal itself to the world. His stomach clenched, and he grimaced as magic burst through him, pouring out in powerful waves. A twilight green glow expands into a huge magic circle at Aegiel's feet, bathing his face in an unearthly light. Tiny motes of gold and green wink in and out of existence and haunting music floats eerily on soft, whispering winds. Aegiel's eyes shine like lanterns, and golden chains dangle from metal cuffs that materialize on his ankles and wrists. The sky thrums and ripples from some unseen force, giving off the impression of a giant predator lurking under peaceful waters. Every action feels pregnant with consequence as the earth itself holds it's breath in anticipation of something.

The light faded, and the magic ended as suddenly as it had begun. Sweat poured from Aegiel's temples. Even he was frightened by his own power at times. To look into the face of Destiny only to find it staring back at you... Men had been driven mad for less. Luckily, Aegiel wasn't yet capable of such magic, only able to peer into the shallowest corners of existence. And even that was frightening. He froze as he remembered the reason the had done so in the first place, and looked around anxiously. Only two wolves were left. The two that had scratched at each other had fled. They looked skittish, and froth gathered at the corners of their mouths, dripping off their crooked whiskers. "You must be starved to stay here after that, poor things," Aegiel muttered. The wolves whimpered pathetically, and charged at him once more.

Both wolves lunged, and Aegiel danced around them. They landed and spun around in unison, snarling and snapping. Aegiel counted to three, and heard a snapping sound overhead. The smaller of the wolves glanced up in surprise, and failed to dodge the falling branch. It howled as the wood crashed into its back, burying its body into the dirt. Struggling to free itself, it glared at Aegiel, eyes promising revenge. The mage glared back. The trapped wolf yelped in surprise as yet another, smaller, branch landed on its nose with a thunk, muffling his pathetic cries. Aegiel wasn't sure whether to laugh or help it out. The other wolf solved that question for him by jumping onto his back, and he barely rolled back in time to keep from having his jugular ripped open. Dodging and weaving, he began to regret casting Unearthly Grace. It did provide quite a bit of protection from the wolves' attacks, but it's magic kept him from going on the offensive. "Just a little longer," he prayed as he narrowly avoided beheading. All for a single flower.

Finally, he felt his intangible shield fade out of existence as the world rewrote the laws of reality back to what they were. And he struck. "Now, Meep!" he cried, swinging his staff at his attacker's surprised snout. The wolf winced as it took the hit, and it's eyes bulged in shock as a tiny white viper slid out of Aegiel's sleeve and down the length of his staff, leaping and burying its venomous fangs in the wolf's tender snout. It toppled over, and the viper slithered out from under it, coiling up Aegiel's legs and around his neck, hissing ominously. The trapped wolf yelped at its fallen comrade, struggling to free itself. Taking pity on it, Aegiel lifted the side of the branch, careful to keep his distance from the flailing canine. To his utter disgust, it sprinted over to its former ally and began tearing into it with its sharp teeth, ending the wolf's life and eating what was probably its first meal in weeks. Aegiel fought the urge to wretch, but couldn't bring himself to attack the wretched creature. He quietly made his escape, unable to take in the gruesome sight.

    9 hours later....

Aegiel swore as he tripped over yet another pebble. "Ow ow ow ow OW! I'm wounded! I'm done for! I'm-GAH-ha-ow......" A nightmare, that's what this stupid job was. Hours of searching, and he had only covered a tiny part of the forest, with no flower to be found. His feet bled from a gazillion scratches that his open-toed sandals had everything to do with, he was tired, and there was no way he was gonna let this damn flower get away from him now. Not after this. He glanced under a few suspicious-looking rocks, making his way deeper into the shadowy forest. Darkness was falling, and Aegiel was not looking forward to continuing his search in pitch-black darkness. But he was stubborn, and he knew it. If he had to stay out all night sniffing around for one tiny herb in the middle of the Spooky Forest, he'd do it. The hairs on the back of his neck prickled. "What now?" he snapped, not in the mood to beat anything into submission. Wait. Yes, yes he was.

A wolf padded into the open clearing, something dangling from its open mouth. Aegiel frowned. Could it be?.....No way. "You," he breathed as he recognized the wolf's mangy face. His face twisted in disgust. "Back for another meal, are you? You really are something, you know that?" . The wolf said nothing, for obvious reasons. It dropped what it was holding, then turned around and padded silently back into the growing darkness. Aegiel blinked, then sidled up to the dropped item, suspicious. It was a flower. His face wrinkled in confusion. "A flower..." his mouth worked silently, unable to comprehend the sudden turn of events. Then he picked up the stem of the flower with trembling fingers, tears sliding down his smiling face. He was touched. And confused, to be sure, but touched all the same. He had given the wolf a less-than-warm reception, humiliated it in battle, and knocked out its only ally brave enough to stand by its side. And here was the flower he had been searching for, given to him directly by said wolf itself. He conveniently ignored the fact that the wolf had eaten its ally and was only hours before attempting to do the same to Aegiel. "Lamia Scale, here I come!" he yelled as he made his way back to his guild, his home, and, in time, his family.
