Haunted! [MISSION] {SOLO}

Hiro looked at the sheet of paper in his hands as he walked up to one of the households. This is place alright, Hiro thought after taking a look at the picture on the paper to determine that this was where he was supposed to be. A flier for a job flew into his face on his travels and he decided to take it because it seemed interesting. After all a devil that wasn’t interested in spirits was nonsense. If these were the souls of criminals, Hiro would have himself a good meal. If not, Hiro could still easily scare them off and then he could go get paid and eat some real food. If there were no spirits then Hiro would still get paid.

Hiro walked up the steps of the house and opened the house with the owner’s key whom he visited before coming here. What awaited him inside, nobody knows.

Hiro entered the building and closed the door behind him. It was cold. Hiro didn’t like the cold and looked in a couple of the closets for some blankets. Eventually he found a pair of relatively large blankets and laid one of them out on the house owner’s sofa and tossing the over on top of that before heading to the kitchen. He had plenty of time to kill before night time when the ghosts seem to appear so he had to make sure he ate well and sleep well before then.

When Hiro got to the kitchen he looked in the man’s refrigerator only to jump back with his nose scrunching up his face at the stench. This was a chemical weapon of great proportions! Hiro thought he could use it to kill off his father if he was able to bear it but he wasn’t so he slammed the fridge shut to prevent the stench from getting stronger.

Hiro’s stomach let out a groan. He had no idea what he was going to do for food as he plopped himself on the employers couch. He was hungry. He really hoped these ghosts were real and not only that, that they were the souls of some really disgusting people. Those kinds of people were the kinds of people worth eating and the ones that deserved to be eaten. Those who died innocent were like stinkbugs. Disgusting.

It’s been noted that stinkbugs are so disgusting that when they were the only option to eat, birds chose starvation over eating them. Souls of the innocent, souls of good people, they were the same. Perhaps it was a deterrent God made to keep devils like Hiro from eating the innocent, to protect the creatures he created. Hiro was half that creature but he was also half the creature that was God’s enemy so some instinctually mixed feelings rose between the two halves, the human half and the devil half. Hiro looked to the ground though and the scampering of feet. The owner really hasn’t lived in this house for a long time, there were mice running about. A smile grew over Hiro’s face when he saw these mice.

Hiro leaped out of the couch without touching the floor and lunged towards the mice hoping to catch at least one. He could find the others but filling his stomach with at least one mouse would be alright right now. It would at least get him through till he found the ghosts and was able to deal with them. The two mice unfortunately saw him and scurried away in opposite directions as Hiro went face first into the wall they were festering in front of. All in all, Hiro’s hunger had made him make a poor decision.

Hiro lifted himself to his knees and started rubbing his nose in pain with an ugly and menacing scowl that perfectly fit his half devil lineage. “Alright little mousy mousy you are DEFINITELY going to be dinner now,” Hiro mumbled to himself as he glanced over at the mouse that was under a table with an incredible amount of murderous intent in his eye that made the mouse shiver with fear.

“Raaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!” Hiro shouted with a roar as he lunged at the table only to hit his head again and break the table as the mouse scurried away in a desperate attempt to escape its hungry predator. Hiro lifted himself up out from the small chunks of wood that was once a table and glared at the mouse with glowing blue eyes from the side of his head. His anger got to him and he was about to do something reckless but he didn’t give a damn about the whole thing as blue sparks started to flicker off his body until his flaming horns burst out of his head and flames flickered around his body. This mouse was going to get it and Hiro was not going to let it escape for any reason as he rushed the wall where the mouse hid himself in and burned through it with raw power and blue fire to force the mouse out of the wall and into the extra room on the other side.

As Hiro went through the wall he noticed something right in front of him. Two translucent figures standing there staring at him in fear and horror stricken across their faces. Hiro knew what they were.  Ghosts, spirits, dead people, call them what you will they were only one thing to Hiro. Food.

Hiro couldn’t tell if they would taste good or what their sins were. It seemed like they were just typical spirits of some fairly decent people. That was something that went towards the tastes of his father not his own tastes. Hiro preferred damned souls compared to pure souls. “Oi you two,” Hiro said as he looked at them with his glowing eyes. “I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” Hiro’s flames burned brighter and larger to successfully intimidate the spirits into screaming and running into the next room. “Tch. Such a pain in the ass,” Hiro said as he ran and started chasing them, forgetting about the mouse he was chasing.

Hiro chased the ghosts into the hall as the floated up and through the ceiling to the second floor. Hiro didn’t want to make too much noise and attract any unwanted attention to himself so he chose to go up the stairs rather than jump through the ceiling and leave a hole in the second floor. When he reached the second floor it took only a second as he caught one of the ghosts in his hand and it burst into flames as Hiro ignited it with his magic. Spirits like this were incredibly weak so it wasn’t difficult to burn them away, even with magic as weak as Hiro’s. The other one continued to flee and run as Hiro stood there staring in its direction.

Abandoning your own comrade huh, Hiro thought, you’re more despicable than your soul makes you out to be. The ghost in Hiro’s hand had completely burned away at that point and Hiro walked forward a little confused by the reaction of the ghost he had just killed.

Hiro was confused by the actions of the ghost he just killed. It was far to content after Hiro had killed it and barely struggled, like it had given up on its existence entirely. When Hiro burns a spirit they aren’t sent to the afterlife they’re reduced to nothing and disappear like they never existed in the first place. Not that they would know that but the possibility of it happening should be in their minds since they’ve been dead for a good while now.

Hiro ignored it as nothing and just kept walking only to smell something off. This wasn’t a smell that you find in a normal persons house. The smell of old dried blood. He didn’t notice it earlier and wondered why? Perhaps the stink of the dirty house was enough to cover the scent but it was probably some chemicals masking the smell. Hiro kept walking towards the bedroom as the smell continued to get stronger. Hiro kept himself cautious and turned his devil form off to conserve energy.

Hiro looked around. He was in the house owner’s bedroom now. The smell was more distinct now and the smell of rot was around as well. It was troublesome and uncomfortable as Hiro’s nose scrunched up in discomfort. Hiro may be a devil but he didn’t grow up in hell he grew up peacefully under his mother’s protection until his father decided to pay them a visit.

Hiro walked around the room quietly and looked around. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary aside from the horrid smells. It didn’t make sense. Everything was nice and clean there were even scented candles in the room which only mixed with the smells rather than mask them. What the hell has this guy been doing in here? Hiro thought. Hiro noticed something out of the corner of his eye as he saw the other ghost floating in front of the bookshelf in the room. Once Hiro noticed him the ghost quickly receded into the bookshelf almost like it was beckoning Hiro toward something. Something which Hiro was curious about as he walked toward the bookshelf.

Hiro arrived at the bookshelf. Nothing seemed off about it as he looked around aside from the excessive amount of scented candles on the shelf. Actually, most of the candles in the room were on the bookshelf which was a little odd. It made the bookshelf stand out as Hiro looked around and eventually noticed marks on the floor which were clearly scrape marks from moving furniture. Hiro went to the side of the bookshelf to try and move it himself and began to push. The bookshelf began to move and was pushed aside, revealing a small door. Hiro opened the small door and crouched down only to be hit with a violent wave of the smell of death which made Hiro vomit the stomach acid out of his currently empty belly. With vomit on the floor Hiro took a step into the room as Hiro held his stomach in discomfort and nausea. The room was dark aside from the ghost which floated in the center, giving off the faint ominous glow that ghosts do.

Hiro needed to light up the room and reignited his flames. The faint blue glow his flames gave off illuminated the room well enough to make a distinction of his most immediate surroundings as he walked toward the ghost. The ghost didn’t even make any hesitation to move or escape Hiro like it did before. It was like when he caught the other ghost. It seemed to have given up on not just life, but existence itself. Hiro well obliged and grabbed the ghost and destroyed it with his flames with little to no resistance. It was so confusing until Hiro looked at where the ghost he killed was floating and beside Hiro was a machine. Within that machine was a corpse; a very rotten corpse that was almost nothing but bones and blood. A few tendons and muscles remained but the skin was gone and most of that was gone to. Hiro Immediately jumped back on instinct. "Holy Shit!" The devil yelled.

Hiro needed to look around some more but even with his flames radiating he couldn’t see well enough without destroying the place and left to get the scented candles. Hiro ignited the candles by waving his blazing hands over them and then placed them all over the room to get a better view of the whole room. When he finished Hiro found the room larger than it appeared and filled with nothing but bones and torture devices that were bathed in blood. Hiro couldn’t fathom what had happened here not even he would use these things.

Hiro understood why the place was filled with mice now though. This room had a dead body, food, inside it and the scattered remains of other corpses lying around that weren’t alive. Hiro found some barrels that were filled with gasoline halfway. Next to it was a lighter. Hiro assumed that before the ghosts started to appear the owner was going to use fire to torture and kill his next victim.

Hiro assessed the situation and deduced what was going on for himself. Whether he was right or wrong didn’t matter. Hiro had made his assumption and he was going to go with it. The owner of this house, Hiro’s client, was a serial killer. Hiro’s favorite thing to eat and Hiro was hungry.

Hiro kicked the barrel of gasoline over and stepped over it. Hiro’s flames took over and ignited the gasoline as it burned and leaked through floor into the first floor. Fortunately for Hiro, the room was right above the living room and a few of the burning drops of gasoline reached the couch and other flammable pieces of furniture as they caught on fire.

Hiro let a smile grow on his face. It had been so long since he had gone hunting. Last time he had prey was a lowly serial rapist he killed and devoured two years ago. Ever since he hasn’t eaten any souls of note aside from some lowly thief’s he found already dead and straggling along the roadside as spirits, unaware they were dead. Hiro was going to burn this house to the ground and destroy this god forsaken place and then kill the man behind it all and devour his soul.

Hiro walked out of the burning torture chamber. The first floor of the house was also burning rather well, thanks to the gasoline, and Hiro jumped out of a window, diminishing his flames and devil form to avoid suspicion and stay hidden. It had grown dark and nobody was around at the moment but it was definitely going to get active after this. Hiro quickly ran away from the burning building. He didn’t care after it had demolished. His flames may not yet have the power to destroy a building on their own but that building was going to be torched and the dead corpses and dried blood in the torture room were going to be long gone by the time any rune knights showed up. Hiro continued to run towards the apartment that he knew the client was in. His prey had given Hiro its location and Hiro wasn’t going to waste the opportunity. Tonight, A devil was going to have his fill.

Hiro arrived at the apartment building and walked to the door. He wasn’t going to waste any time with this as he knocked on the door. “Excuse me!” Hiro called out. “I’m the mage who’s replying to your request about your house being haunted. The ghosts are exterminated so I’d like my pay!” Hiro yelled. It was the truth; the ghosts were long gone now, never to exist again.


“Ah? You better have some proof of that before I go back there,” the man at the other end of the door grunted with displeasure. It seemed he Hiro had woke him up. A perfect scenario, unsuspecting and dulled senses. “Do you even have any idea what time it-” the man was cut off opening the door as Hiro jumped forward at the man forcing the door open and tackling the monster. He looked like any other citizen. That’s usually what true monsters looked like on the outside, like regular people. Hiro let his flames burst from his body in as much glory as Hiro could force them to unleash as he placed a hand over the killer’s mouth to keep him from making too much noise and waking everyone else up. Hiro had his other hand tight around his client’s neck letting his flames do most of the work. “Burn away with your sins,” Hiro said through pointed teeth, giving his prey the glare of a predator.

The man looked back at Hiro with horror, flailing and trying to escape, probably like his victims tried to escape him to no avail. However Hiro was not a normal human, he was half devil and had physical strength that came with that curse. All the flailing did was cause the flames on Hiro’s hand to dig deeper into the man’s throat and quicken this whole ordeal.

In not too long, the man stopped moving and Hiro let go. He was dead. Hiro quickly thrust his claws into the man’s chest and pried the damned soul from his body before anything could happen to it. Hiro took the soul to his gaping maw and pushed it into his mouth, chewing and savoring the taste of the monsters sins before swallowing. As Hiro got up he looked back at the door and noticed a man on his rear in the doorway staring at Hiro in fear, horror and terror stricken across his face. Hiro forgot to close the door and was so wrapped up in his satanic instincts that he didn’t notice him, although Hiro didn’t care. His instincts as a devil took over and it angered Hiro now that he was coming to realize the whole thing. Killing the man didn’t bother the little devil-spawn at all. Hiro was bothered with the idea that he enjoyed the whole thing. It bothered him and made him sick that he was like his father for a brief moment, like that monster he just killed. A sadistic killer that derived pleasure from the death of his victims. It was wrong. Hiro knew it was wrong and that wasn’t how he felt but his instincts thought otherwise.

Hiro quickly grabbed the jewels he saw on the counter and jumped out the window, diminishing his flames once more to escape and avoid detection. The realization that someone saw him quickly kicking in that he needed to escape immediately and ran through the alleyway until he found a way into the sewers. He knew the sewers here well enough that there was an escape route there and quickly ran through the sewers, jewels in his hands and blood on them.
