Appearance: Gemma is of medium height for her gender and age and of relatively fit build due to regular physical training. She purposefully does not have any particular traits in her appearance as she values discretion. She often wears simple outfits mainly white blouses with navy skirts or tan pants/shorts, short boots and often opaque tights, over knees socks or knee protection to hide her scar from a fall resulting from one of her first magic training. She wears red frameless oval corrective glasses, a small gold chain as well as two silver piercing in each earlobe. On missions, and sometimes off mission she wears weak shoulder pads, tibia and forearm protection armor as well as a long silver weak spear strapped onto her back, as she is weak in long distance combat. Personality:
- Quiet. This would be the first term to describe Gemma. It is not due to some kind of crippling shyness or some other social awkwardness. She just doesn’t believe much in speaking unless something useful is going to be brought up to the table, something that doesn’t seem to happen much around her. It’s not stemming from some kind of pride issue or superiority complex in comparison to her peer, but from self-consciousness. Her magic is something that had only started manifesting herself a few years back, and she was far from having a decent grasp on it. It frustrated her to no end, she had always had a small knack for figuring things out on the first try and now offered with an amazing opportunity, she barely could control it even on a low level. Annoyance reached it’s peak as well as self doubt, and this had lead her to retreat in silence. The fact she joined a guild had overjoyed her, as it give her prospects for evolution and control over her magic, but it also underlined her weaknesses, making her often wary and somewhat jealous of some of her guildmates. Not wanting to be recognized for her currently inferior level in magic she often stays quiet unless needed, judging that she should stay discreet until she truly had something to offer and be noticed for. Aside from that, she tends to be cordial and direct with people with whom she does interact while never being the kind to be over the top with her feelings and what not, she does express herself quite freely and has always seen herself as an open book, just a not very chatty one by nature.
- Gemma tends to be quite wary about combat alone, and while she does not have the most sociable personality she enjoys and feels much more capable in team combat. It also motivates her as she cannot show weakness or incompetence to other guildmembers as she fears being labeled as completely weak or excommunicated due to incompetence. This often drives her to over-fight, often depleting her magical energy during confrontations, giving her best to a negative extreme. She also has a nasty tendency towards self-punishments after failed missions or combats where she has judged herself not satisfactory enough, over training to the point where it harms her more than helps her in the long term. Gemma is very aware of her partners when in combat (strongly due to her constant need to prove herself to someone) and tries and be helpful even though her magic is more offensive in nature, often joining in on attacks than being the support part of a team. All those motivators tend to make her go from quiet and subdued in regular social interactions to somewhat reckless and heading straight on during combat as she is aware of her weakness in long distance, encouraging her to charge the enemy when it is sometimes not the right strategy for the fight. She never shies away from combat when it is needed but does always try and analyze if there is a better solution. If there is not, she will jump right in weapon and magic at the ready, prepared to justify her place in the guild.
Likes:
- Good conversation : Even though she is far from being a talker, it stems more from a fear of being a useless background noise in an ocean of equally meaningless chatter than actual antisocial tendencies. She greatly appreciates when someone challenges her on an intellectual level, although she'll rarely seek it herself.
- Challenging herself : This takes an almost extreme aspect in Gemma as she tends to push herself way to far, resulting in harm or just beating herself over it quite often. But pushing her limits does bring her to her own, somewhat unhealthy high. She is also willing to sacrifice a lot to expand her limit, something that could clearly cause her problems.
- Calm : In general, but especially after the heat of a battle, Gemma appreciates very little things as much as general calm. As much as she enjoys guild life, the guild hall often becomes overwhelming for her, stressing and annoying her at the same time. It is not linked to loneliness as she prefers to be in the guild hall a calm morning when it is nearly empty than buy herself. She finds some kind of peace and rare sense of unity in group calm.
Dislikes:
- Unnecessary noise : Mindless chatter and background noise just gets on her nerves and feels like a waste of time or actually socially and intellectually useful contact and exchange. It's a constant annoying ringing in her ears.
- Failure : Gemma's hardest judge, as like as she'd enjoys making herself believe is her guild or the opinion of her peers, is herself. She does not tolerate her own failure, and will often punish herself for it, when it isn't even regarded as a failure or mistake by those who surround her.
- Her Eyesight : Gemma was born with mild myopia, which makes seeing things from afar nearly impossible and very blurry without her corrective glasses.It is always quite annoying in the morning, but she dislikes it as it is a true liability in combat, and just dropping her frames could also easily lead to her defeat for something as stupid as glasses.
Motivations:
- Improvement :Gemma's main objective and motivation is improvement. Not succeeding at first is unusual for her, and as much as it unnerves her, it also encourages her, giving her a true sense of existing as she struggles to control and gain power over her magic - and adversaries.
- Usefulness: While all and any progress she makes is mainly for herself, she does thrive on the idea of being of use- of putting her newfound power into something. Not specifically good or bad, but something for which she'd be needed and helpful. Something that would confirm that her efforts are indeed showing.
- Success : In the end, she mainly just wants all around success. As a mage, in her guild, money wise and also power wise. She is motivated buy the idea of gaining status buy the use of her power, a selfish goal of self satisfaction that keeps her going.
Fears:
- Excommunication : Gemma's biggest fear is being asked to leave her guild for which she struggled so much to protect it's name buy improving herself and putting her skills to work. Losing what gives her a sense of worth and usefulness.
- Asphyxiation : Result of a childhood game gone wrong where she nearly died choking, Gemma's one big phobia is asphyxiation, which extends from choking to being stuck underwater or any very tight spaces where she fears, sometimes linked to panic, that her oxygen will run out.
- Helplessness : As much as she enjoys the presence of a guild (when they're not noisily brawling near her) Gemma fears complete helplessness and dependency, something she always keeps in mind in team fights where she over exercises herself, refusing to have the fight being taken over by someone else as she rests. She also has a need for financial and emotional dependance, judging that she must- at twenty- be completely able to take care of herself. But she is aware that she needs to accept the help of others to reach her goals, something that she is slowly learning.
