Jay was left at an orphanage at birth with only a gold ring with the letter J engraved into it. Not having anything else to identify him by, the caretaker named him after the ring that was left with him. Jay spent most of his childhood there until a young couple stopped by in town. The woman was a traveling entertainer and the man, an ex-soldier, who had married her.
The spectacle could be seen from out the windows of the orphanage and several of the kids including Jay went to watch. On the floor she had placed a small glass prism and flecks of light swirled around it as the woman danced. The man started to play a tin whistle and the woman became invisible! The music continued to play and the dancer would fade in and out to the music. The tempo increased and the woman was suddenly accompanied by a pair of mirror images of her self.
The crowd cheered and tossed gold pieces at her feet as she danced. But all the while Jay was in awe. He wanted to know how it worked. So as the crowd watched he slipped past them, towards the flute playing man, and climbed into their wagon with only the clothes and the ring that was left with him at birth. Soon the performance ended and the young couple disembarked unknowing of their extra passenger.
Halfway to the next town the couple stopped for the night and discovered him. The man was not happy but the woman was delighted and insisted on keeping him. The man argued it but the woman only smiled at him until his temper faded. The next morning they introduced themselves. The man was named Gregor and the woman was named Olivia. They explained their lives to Jay and was told he would have to work to earn his share. This couldn’t have made Jay happier and started to bounce around the campsite asking all manner of questions on how Olivia was able to disappear while dancing. Jay’s new foster parents smiled and packed up to continue their travels.
Gregor wasted no time teaching Jay how to fight and hunt, much to his annoyance. But Jay learned quickly and even discovered a natural talent using requip magic after being frustrated by being disarmed again and again while sparing with his father. This made Gregor happy and led to increased intensity in Jay’s training in martial skills. Jay spent as much time with his mom still wanting to learn the secrets behind her illusions. It was light she explained, she could bend it and shape it to enhance her performances. Jay learned and grew under Gregor’s and Olivia’s care.
After many years of life on the road making a living off helping his dad hunt for food and assisting in his mom’s shows, Jay had become a young man. He was still eager to learn but his parents had taught him all they could. So Jay challenged himself to combine both of his skills to make a new one. After a while Jay found success and he approached his foster parents with what he had crafted, a solid light lance identical to his father’s favorite weapon. Gregor slowly accepted it and, after testing it, let out a large laugh of approval. Then his mom pulled him aside and she hugged him. Then Olivia told him about mage guilds and how they could teach him even more.
Jay didn’t know what to say, he didn’t want to leave his parents but knew he couldn’t stay forever. After a few days of thought by himself, Jay had decided to take his moms advice. He wanted to be the best he could be at the skills he was given to honor his foster parents. Jay told them of his decision and gathered his few possessions in search of a mage guild. As he bid farewell his mother gave him the glass prism she used as a parting gift. And so Jay began his adventure.
