Description:
The lost magic known as The Returned used to be prevalent centuries ago, a gift from the Lord of the Underworld to let mortals act as a bridge between the living and dead. However, due to the nature of their magic, these mages were hunted to near extinction. Now that power pools in the rare individual that is born with the magic, offering them abilities the original wielders never even dreamed of. Even the ability to commune with the Lord of the Underworld himself.
Lore Effects:
Speaker for the Dead
When speaking with a spirit, the wielder of this lineage can understand them regardless of what language they speak, and in return they can understand the wielder.
Abilities:
Hades, Lord of the Underworld
The entity that rules life after death has as many names as there are religions, but to The Returned it appears as Hades, a dark skinned man donning a skull mask. As he is above mortal politics, Hades refuses to fight himself, but he does lend a bit of his power to the summoner. While Hades is summoned, all undead allied to the user of this lineage double in strength. He is never seen without his undead hound Cerberus, who will aid the user of this lineage unlike its master. As an otherworld entity, he is fickle in nature and will not adhere to summons unless the user of this lineage is closer to death than not (below 50% health) and can only be summoned once per thread.
Cerberus, Bestest Boy of the Underworld
This three headed, undead dog is the loyal guardian of Hades, and is summoned whenever he is. It takes the appearance of a skeleton surrounded in a fire of ghostly blue. As a spiritual entity this beast is immune to non-magical attacks, and takes half damage from magic unless it is Demon Slayer magic. Its strength is equal to the user of this lineage (up to H+), and each of its three heads use a different kind of magic.
Right Head - Necrotic Cloud. Noxious green gas spews forth from its mouth, causing everything the gas touches to decay rapidly, leaving only bones behind.
Middle Head - Ghost Fire. A cone of ghostly blue fire that burns the soul rather than flesh comes from Cerberus’s mouth, bypassing physical defenses. As it is not true fire, it cannot be eaten by fire slayers.
Left Head - Shadow Bind. Cerberus’s shadows burst forth to grab the shadows of others, trapping them in place and crushing them.
- Hades and Cerberus:
Spiritual Conduit
Closer to the Underworld than other mortals, the Last of the Returned has an innate connection to spirits. This connection allows them to draw more than one back across the planes to aid them in battle when calling for assistance. When summoning spirits via a spell, they can cast the spell twice instead of just once at the same cost. This larger conduit also causes excess spiritual energy to leak through, enhancing their magic as a result. Because of this they receive a 50% bonus to spellpower when using necromancy spells.
Whispers of the Damned
The Returned are surrounded by spirits at all times, whether they wish to be or not. Some of those spirits enjoy sharing knowledge, for good or ill, to the first ear that will listen to them. Because of this the users of this lineage gain an additional signature spell slot per magic that scales with their rank (up to S+). This spell should be related to shadows or necromancy, the hallmarks of The Returned.
Ferryman’s Due
As the bridge between the living and the dead, the wielders of this lineage are due a payment for their services. In return, they help spirits pass on to the next world. When used, the wielder gains a 100% bonus to jewels received from jobs.
