Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
It had been quite a while since Serilda and Mythal had attended a festival that took place outside of New Rhaegar. Since Mercury had spent such a long time in hiding due to her presumed death, the Silver Wolf ace had been locked into either staying on the island or inside of her guild, or being in disguise. This was the first holiday where she was able to be out in the open without having to hide. As such, the group decided to change things up a bit this time around. While the Xocili and Rhaegarians were having their own celebration on the island, the smaller group of them, including Saffron and Cedric, opted to spend the evening in Magnolia where they could enjoy Fairy Tail’s hosting of the event.

To say that things were still complicated as of late was putting it mildly. Maker had been defeated, which was a massive wave of relief off of all of their minds. However, the war was still at large and not looking like it was going to die down any time soon. Seberg was also still running around somewhere, which was a concern in and of itself. The biggest revelation, however, was Xavier’s return. They had all previously thought the former God King had perished on Rhaegar by Vandrad’s hand, but when he reached out to Mercury he had revealed that he was still alive. At the time it wasn’t much of a concern. He seemed apologetic and genuinely wanting to repair things with Vandrad and his family as much as he could, and after some discussion it was decided that they should view him with caution but not necessarily with hostility.

Only then for him to turn around and attack Vandrad, and in the process reveal that he was the very same man that Saffron had been dating for several months up until that point. It had been rough on Saffron, and Mercury as well, who had slept with Xavier without realizing his connection to Saffron. Unfortunately, things had not gotten any simpler as a couple short weeks later, Saffron and Cedric had gone off on a mysterious mission in Iceberg that had opened up a door to a whole other slew of drama for the poor Fairy Tail mage. She’d fallen into a deeper funk, and Cedric had expressed some concerns about leaving her alone for too long, so they had elected to bring him and Saffron along for what had traditionally just been the siblings in the past.

The six of them, plus the two children, wandered the streets together. Serilda was dressed up like a witch, in a long black robe that was cinched at the stomach with a crescent moon shaped brooch. Beneath the robe was a pair of shorts and a strappy black top. She wore thigh high leather boots and a wide brimmed witch hat. Walking beside her was Alexia, who was dressed up in a zip up onesie with a hood, fashioned to look like a black cat. The little girl had paint on her face in the shape of whiskers and a triangular cat nose, and she carried a bucket filled with candy from trick or treating in one hand, while her other hand held on to Serilda’s.

“Mommy, look!” Alexia pointed at a stage where people were gathering in small groups at a time for a costume contest. Currently there were about a dozen adults on stage in costumes with varying levels of quality and originality.

“I see them! Look at all those costumes. How fun!” Mostly Serilda was just entertaining the girl’s excitement, but it was always interesting to see what kind of outfits people came up with this time of year. She peered at the billboard in front of the area, which listed a schedule of different contests. “Oh hey, look Mythal. They’re doing a children’s round in a few minutes. What do you think, girls? Do you want to do a costume contest?”

    “Yeah!!”

    LIGHT
    &

It was nice to be at some kind of celebration that wasn’t on New Rhaegar.

Mythal didn’t have an issue with the blooming nation at all; in fact, he had a lot of respect for everyone there, especially given everything they had gone through in such a short amount of time. Between the issues with Maker and now Xavier revealing himself, having been pretending to be someone else and romantically linked with Saffron, a lot had happened. And considering that Mercury had been forced to go to ground to keep from Maker figuring out her ploy, she wasn't necessarily allowed to go about the world in her usual attire. But now that Maker was gone, she could reveal herself as alive and return to her duties at Silver Wolf and, more importantly, attend events outside of New Rhaegar without having to be disguised.

So it was more about the freedom to go elsewhere without having to keep a careful eye behind them. Sure, Xavier was still something they all needed to be on the lookout for but the former ruler had waited until Vandrad had been alone. It was highly unlikely he’d attack again, especially after accidentally giving up the deception right in front of Saffron. Plus Saffron and Cedric had gone on some kind of mission to Iceberg and when they had returned, it had apparently been just as taxing as everything with Xavier. So being able to go somewhere away from other Rhaegarians and being around other people was definitely a must for the blonde. Plus now that Alexia and Naomi were basically becoming full fledged thinking children, Halloween was a bit more fun than it had been in the past. They recognized the excitement around them and it made the Darkness Slayer’s heart warm to see how thrilled they were to dress up.

Naomi, who was usually the more subtle of the two, was even more excited than her sister. She’d gone as a cat just like Alexia but she was dressed as a white feline, grinning from ear to ear as she walked beside Mythal, tightly holding his hand and the bucket of candy she had accumulated. Her eyes were wide as plates, taking in the sounds, smells and sights of the festival that had been erected on the streets of Magnolia. Mythal, not usually one for costumes and excitement either, had dressed himself as a forest druid, wearing some of his usual attire but completing it with a costume cloak, etched with glittering gold runes. He’d also acquired some attached sleeves that had wide openings, showing off his arms beneath. The last touch was a few earrings he’d put in both ears, clip on jewelry that, he thought, added to the total fit.

Both looked as Alexia pointed at a nearby stage where several people were showing off their costumes. “Coool!” Naomi said with an excited gasp, her eyes looking at each individual outfit. Mythal chuckled softly as he looked down at his daughter’s overwhelmed faces, only looking up as Serilda mentioned a children’s round. Both girls practically whirled around with a thrill. “Yeah!! Costoom contest!” Naomi bounced beside Mythal.

“Well who am I to say no to that?,” the Director said with a smile. “Alright girls, gimme both your buckets. Mommy will take you up so daddy can grab some pictures.” He gently took both pots of candy and then, very casually, released them to float beside him. The barest use of his magic to keep them safe while his hands were free, already reaching into his pocket to pull out his iLac so he could take pictures of their first time in a costume contest.

COME AT ME AND YOU'LL SEE
I'M MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

--- YOU THINK THAT YOU'LL BREAK ME, YOU'RE GONNA FIND IN TIME ---
    Saffron really needed this holiday.

Halloween was her absolute favorite day of the year. It was always an exciting time, and she loved seeing how creative people could get with their costumes and the decorations around their homes. The entire aesthetic of the holiday just spoke to her, with corn mazes and haunted houses, games with candy prizes and the community coming together to celebrate with complete strangers. After everything that had happened between Xavier and her parents, she was eager for a night where she could just forget about everything else for a while and focus on being her usual cheery, social self.

The blonde had gone all out for her costume, electing to dress as a female version of the main character from one of her favorite campy horror films. She wore a tattered orange midriff shirt over a pair of equally roughed up jeans. A leather harness crossed over her chest beneath an open faced jean jacket. She’d gotten Mercury to add a setting to her prosthetic that allowed Saffron to turn it into a chainsaw that was fully operational – though, out of the mindfulness of safety, the chain on it was dulled so that no one would hurt themselves with it if they touched it by mistake while it was activated. She’d even taken the time to paint on some semi realistic looking scars and wounds, complete with fake blood and dirt to make herself look scuffed up and battle torn.

“Oh my god, they’re so cute. I’m gonna die.” Saffron absolutely adored children. It was another reason why she loved Halloween so much, since it was a great time for kids who got the chance to explore their creativity and widen their imaginations with all the spooky and crazy things around them. She had practically gushed over Alexia and Naomi when she’d seen their precious matching costumes, and as the group of them walked through the fairgrounds of Magnolia, Saffron was constantly getting distracted by children as they pointed or gasped at her costume, striking poses for them or even playfully chasing them with her chainsaw arm while they squealed with delight and laughter.

So when Mythal and Serilda had stopped to notice the children’s costume contest that was about to happen, Saffron had been more than happy to watch the event as it unfolded. There were about twenty kids on the stage standing in front of their parents, with a mixture of ones that were a bit shy about the whole thing and others that were just soaking up the attention and really getting into it. The two twins fell in the latter camp. Alexia was almost always a glutton for attention, but even Naomi was more animated than usual, both of the girls standing there and making little cat noises or “clawing” the air.

“Would any of you care for a potion?” A wandering vendor approached them. He had a fold-down tray that was strapped around his shoulders, with an array of various colored and glowing ingredients. Unlike previous years, this year the consumer was able to put their own recipe together to see what effect they could create on their own.

“Oh hell yeah.” This booth was always a winner in Saffron’s book. “Maybe I’ll get turned into a dude again and get my abs back. Not that I should ever be able to wield that kind of sexual power.” Last year she’d been genderbent, and it had almost been a dream come true, the woman having even stepped outside the realm of her normal behavior to have a one night stand with a willing woman that had been fascinated by the change. After quickly scanning the options, she selected three ingredients and watched as the man poured them into a cup shaped like a small cauldron. Taking the drink in hand after he’d mixed it up, she stepped back and would wait to drink it until after Cedric, Vandrad, and Mercury decided if they were going to partake as well or not. “Bottoms up!”

Once anyone else that was going to partake had their drinks in hand, she raised hers in a mock toast and knocked it back in a few quick gulps. Then, she stood there and eagerly awaited the results. Nothing seemed to happen right away, though she had felt a slight change as the magic wove itself around her. “Hmm… either mine was a dud, or the effect isn’t super obvious.”

Bandit, the crow perched on Mercury’s shoulder, squawked loudly in Saffron’s direction. You’re a dud,” the blonde retorted, more out of reflex than anything else, without really stopping to think about what had occured. A brief second later her eyes went wide, her gaze snapping back to the bird in wide eyed excitement. “I can talk to animals,” she breathed.

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
Even though she had been “free” for a couple months now, it was still exhilarating to finally be out and about in public as herself, without worry about the consequences. The last several weeks had been an up and down emotional journey for Mercury as much as for Saffron. The queen apparent was still struggling with the losses of Blade, Genesis, and even Maker. As the days went by she found it a little easier to cope with the knowledge that they were gone, although her wounds had opened again after her little venture to Teras Prime to lay what remained of Blade to rest. Vandrad and his family had, of course, been instrumental in keeping her head held high, allowing her to feel what she needed to feel and doing their best to guide her through her pain. Saffron had played a large part in that as well, particularly since the blonde was the first one to comfort Mercury after she and Cillian had parted ways.

Which had only made it worse when everything with Xavier had come to light. Saffron had made it vehemently clear that she didn’t blame Mercury for sleeping with him, considering that no one but Xavier himself had been aware of his connection to Saffron, but that still hadn’t really helped ease the guilt Mercury felt over it. Unfortunately, things had only gotten worse for the Boscan, who had been revealed to not actually be Boscan by birth. Mercury and Vandrad had been regaled with the broader strokes of the visit to Iceberg after Saffron and Cedric had returned, as shocked as they had been about the sudden upheaval of everything Saffron had known about her home life. It was troubling on a number of levels, to say the least, and it hadn’t helped much with Saffron’s moodiness.

But today was a good day filled with high spirits, and even Saffron couldn’t stay down and dejected. Mercury, as eager as always for a festive holiday – perhaps more eager than usual, actually – had thrown herself right into things. She’d found a costume that was some “sexy” version of a mummy, albeit not so scandalous that it would be inappropriate to wear in public with small children running around. Off white bindings were wrapped around her chest, arms, and legs, with a layered skirt of the same material around her hips. She wore gold lined slippers along with a few gold bangles and a necklace, the jewelry all of Desiertan design, and her hair was adorned with a headband that matched the rest of the outfit.

It wasn’t often that the group of them spent a holiday in Magnolia, despite the fact that Vandrad was an ace of the Fairy Tail and the guild often hosted many of the large events in town. Mercury thought back to all the time that she used to spend in the area, back when she and Vandrad had first become partners. Those days felt so long ago, and yet at the same time almost like they were yesterday. Truthfully, Mercury and Vandrad didn’t do nearly as much training together as they once did. At this point they simply knew one another too well and were so used to each other’s tricks that neither of them really got anything out of it aside from a decent workout. Vandrad was far more invested in training with Cedric, Vriko, Saffron, and Victoria. Mercury wasn’t as focused on training as they were, though she certainly did enough to make sure she kept herself sharp, particularly knowing that Seberg was still out and about somewhere in the world. But otherwise, she had turned her attention on her work with Silver Wolf and doing her best to try to learn the ropes of everything she would need to know to run the budding nation that was New Rhaegar.

As a result she was still exceptionally busy most days, so the break was more than welcome. She smiled when Serilda took the two girls up for a costume contest on stage, chuckling at the antics of both of her nieces. Her attention was drawn away briefly by a mobile vendor offering drinks. Much like Saffron, Mercury was always a fan of that particular station, which was a usual staple at most holidays. So it was perhaps a surprise then when the Xocili declined a drink, though she was more than happy to watch the results of the others. Saffron tanked her glass and after a moment admitted that she wasn’t sure anything had happened. Bandit shuffled on Mercury’s shoulder, eying Saffron with a beady eye before giving a rude caw in the blonde’s direction.

It would have been humorous enough. Plenty of people “talked” to animals, making up words to fill in their noises to have a fabricated conversation. However, that didn’t seem to be what had happened with Saffron. With a double take, she proclaimed that the drink had given her the ability to communicate with animals. Mercury raised a brow. “That’s actually pretty neat,” she admitted. Then, her lips sank into a wicked smirk. “Can you do me a favor and tell him he’s a greedy little bastard and needs to stay out of my jewelry boxes if he wants to survive until Christmas?”

A few minutes later, the Rune Knights returned with their daughters. The girls had not won the contest, but they still clearly seemed to have enjoyed themselves up on stage. And it probably helped that they still gave candy to all the kids that had participated, no matter if they had won or lost. “Did you girls have a good time?” she asked the tots as they came bounding back, buckets back in hand. When both of them exclaimed that they had fun participating in the contest, Mercury chuckled. There was something… odd… in her expression, a slight hesitancy of some kind before she spoke up again. “Well, good! You’re going to be pros at this in no time, which means maybe next year you can show your younger cousin the ropes.”

The admission of her pregnancy was so slight, so subtle, that one might have missed it. Indeed, there was a bit of a silence after the remark as people smiled in humor over the comment... Before one by one the gears started turning, and looks of confusion turned her way as if they were trying to decide if they had heard her right. And for her part, Mercury only lifted her gaze to meet Vandrad’s with as genuine and emotional of a smile as she’d ever given, the woman very much “glowing” as the Earthland term went.

Vandrad was overjoyed, which was saying a lot. Granted, he wasn’t showing it in any kind of boisterous, outward way that would have drawn glances or suspicion, mostly because that wasn’t how he operated. But there was an air of… patience to him, as if things that would usually cause him to scoff or roll his eyes wouldn’t cause as much of a commotion as usual. There were lots of reasons that people knew about for that to be; while he wasn’t a fan of dressing up, he always managed to pull off a costume that made him look good so that could have been part of it. The ratification of New Rhaegar’s nationalization was days away at best, meaning that he would be king soon enough, which could excite most people.

Truth was, there were also things that should have been bothering him – namely Xavier. Ever since his surprise reveal and attack, the former king had gone to ground, completely disappearing from the public eye. Usually Vandrad would be one to swear vengeance against anyone that would dare lift a hand at him but he was more curious than anything else in this regard. For one, Xavier had reached out to Mercury, to talk to her and gauge her idea of how talking to him would work out. Xavier and Vandrad hadn’t parted on the best of terms, which the future king believing he had watched the former God-King fall to his death. His appeal to the Silver Wolf Ace, to want to make things right, had seemed genuine enough to convince her. If he was lying, he had proven himself more adept than most others; even without Mythal’s ability to pick up on lies, she was still remarkable good at perceiving heightened emotions and physical attributes that would show one was lying.

There was also the fact that Xavier had paraded around as Trevor Winters, a man born on Earthland and who had become involved with Saffron. In most situations, Vandrad would had assumed he had done so under the guise of learning more about Vandrad; after all, the blonde was his pupil and no doubt she had discussed him and his family a few times, if only about surface level information. But as far as she could tell, she had never given out anything that would have betrayed them and Xavier had never gone out of his way to ask. And the look he had given Saffron when she’d seen him beneath his mask… there was no denying the pain, shock and horror that had ripped through him. Vandrad had sensed it, even in his paralyzed state. It had widened the puzzle into a larger hole with even more potential pieces fitting in but without a real answer.

But that was the last thing on his mind; the fact that Mercury was pregnant had settled itself as more important than anything else. It had been somewhat of a surprise, given her ability to halt anything like that happening. It seemed she had reached a point of being ready to start a family with him and he was ecstatic. He was forced to keep it down for the sake of allowing an acceptable amount of time to pass, as well as giving Mercury the opportunity to truly surprise as many people as possible. She did enjoy wielding shocking information and seeing how many people she could hit with it. And it seemed she had decided that their time out with everyone, celebrating the spooky season, was the best time to unveil it, at least to the particular group they would be going out with.

Magnolia was always excited to throw up decorations for holidays and All Hallow’s was no different. The streets were lined with booths and enchanted to play chortling, eerie sounds. Vandrad found himself dressed as a vampire; a tight, crimson vest over a puffed up white shirt. A cape/cloak had been thrown over his shoulders, deep teal on top and a bright purple beneath as it fluttered behind him with each step. The only thing he’d refused to wear were the fake fangs, wanting no part in being uncomfortable with those.

He watched alongside Mercury as Serilda brought his nieces up to participate in the costume contest, amused at the bubbly exuberance of the two girls. Their attention was pulled away for a moment as a wandering attendant came up and offered potions, the like of which he recognized immediately. “I’m good,” he said, waving off the drinks much like Mercury.

“Not feeling adventurous, are we?” Cedric retorted as he slid up beside Saffron and snagged a drink for himself. Unlike Vandrad, who had gone for a more low-key costume, the former Dread Master had gone out there; wearing a fake, royal guard uniform adorned with all the decorative parts. But there was an emblem of a white bunny over his breast and he put on a pair of bunny ears that stuck out ridiculously from his hair.

Vandrad rolled his eyes at the comment, even as Saffron remarked about possibly becoming a man again. Cedric tapped his glass against hers and then downed his drink along with her, smacking his lips slightly at the taste. She commented about her’s being a dud and then turned her gaze to Bandit and shot him an retorting insult, answering his squawk as if she could understand it. It was only then that it dawned on her that she could talk to animals. Cedric smirked and opened his mouth, his lips beginning to move… only for no sound to come out.

His brow furrowed and kept his mouth moving, with nothing still coming out. Vandrad’s lips pulled into a smirking grin as he looked over at the magically muted Cedric. “Oh, this isn’t All Hallow’s at all. It must be a Christmas miracle. Saved from that insufferable voice,” he said, mocking Cedric as he walked over and gave the man a pat on the cheek. “Cedric, if you’d like us to leave this alone and not mock you, just say the word.”

Cedric frowned and glowered a bit at Vandrad. “This is going to be fun,” the future king commented as Mythal, Serilda and the girls came bounding over after their moment to shine in the costume contest. Mercury chuckled and idly commented about them gaining experience that they could pass on the next year to their cousin. There was a moment of amused silence, people chuckling at the innocence of the children before the words that had come out began to churn. And then the two future rulers got to watch as each member of the collected group realized the true weight of what she had admitted.

Vandrad smiled, a genuine, warm look as he wrapped his arm around Mercury’s side and held her close. Cedric, robbed of his ability to proclaim his excitement, could only reach over and pat the future king on the shoulder and give him a thumb’s up, which was the mildest motion any of them would give.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Serilda quite literally could not stand how cute her daughters were. She stood happily behind them up on stage, alongside the other parents that were there to make sure their children behaved and didn’t hurt themselves up on the dais. They didn’t win, but at this point they were still too young to really understand what a competition was. As such, they weren’t upset about losing and had just been happy enough to feel like the center of attention.

When they were done, Serilda helped them back down where they rejoined Mythal and then the rest of the group. It seemed Saffron and Cedric had elected to take part in the drink station, the Rune Knights returning in time to catch the tail end of Vandrad teasing Cedric with… an abnormal level of playfulness. Not that Vandrad couldn’t be playful, of course, but rarely did he do so with a physical gesture, even when Mercury was involved. The upcoming king had been in a remarkably good mood all night, but the way he took the time to pat Cedric on the cheek to emphasize his humor only fueled Serilda’s growing wonder on what could have possibly gotten him so cheerie. She knew it wasn’t anything stemming from the meeting. Vying for New Rhaegar’s independence as a nation had certainly gone well enough, all things considered, but something like that would have never put Vandrad in a state like this.

Luckily, she would not have to wait long to figure out what was going on. Mercury asked the girls if they had a good time, to which Alexia eagerly nodded. The Xocili admitted that next year the girls would be able to show their “younger cousin the ropes, causing a small chuckle to go around the group, followed by a pause. Serilda’s expression went from amused to confused as she looked at the affianced pair and the look they shared with one another. When Vandrad gave a rare show of affection, taking Mercury around the waist and pulling her close, the Voidwalker’s brows shot up in surprise and elation. “You’re pregnant??” she asked.

When the pair confirmed it, a wide and excited smile spread across her face. “Oh my gods! Congratulations!” Serilda practically threw herself at Mercury, giving the other woman a tight hug as they laughed. When she was done with her, she gave Vandrad a firm hug as well before stepping back to let everyone else get their own celebrations in. “Guys, this is amazing! When are you due? And does anyone else know yet?” Everyone present was more than aware that Mercury enjoyed shocking people, and that even Vandrad was prone to such tendencies when the mood suited him. If there was ever a time that the pair would be united in such a task, it would be now. The last thing Serilda wanted to do was accidentally ruin the surprise for anyone else.

The girls were absolutely ecstatic to go up and show off their costumes. Sure, there were other extravagant and flashy costumes that other parents had put the effort into but that was hardly the point. Alexia and Naomi were just thrilled to take part, twirling and giggling as the audience cheered them on. They hadn’t won but that didn’t deter them at all; if anything, they were just as excited to be up there clapping for the winning kids. And Mythal managed to snag some fantastic pictures of them for their ever-growing photo album.

As he walked back, congratulating the twins on their first-ever competition, it looked like Saffron and Cedric had decided to partake in one of the special drinks that were normally handed out at the event. Vandrad was in the midst of teasing the former Dread Master, though what for they had missed. But the future king had done it with such exuberance and playfulness, traits that he usually didn’t embody unless he was feeling really, really good about himself. “Hey babe, maybe I should grab a drink and hope for a repeat of last year?” Mythal teased, flashing his fiancé a grin. After all, he’d found himself a member of the opposite sex and both he and Serilda had found out some interesting, very fun things about what benefits that could entail.

As the girls came up to Mercury and celebrated the fun they’d had, the Silver Wolf Ace remarked that they could help their little cousin learn the ropes the next year. Mythal joined in laughing at the comment, the idle part of his mind a bit slower to pick up on the insinuation at first. He was a beat and a half before Serilda as the pieces put themselves together. Serilda spoke up and asked for clarification, which Mercury and Vandrad were all too happy to confirm. The Voidwalker nearly threw herself on top of Mercury to hug her before moving over to Vandrad. “Congrats. I’m happy for ya both,” Mythal said as he hugged Mercury. Then when Vandrad went to shake his hand, Mythal made a face and pulled him in for a hug. “Got tired of just bein’ an uncle and wanted to try if for yerself, huh?” he teased the future king.

“Daddy, what’s preg-a-nant?” Naomi asked, giving his arm a small tug.

“Well, sweetie, it means that your aunt and uncle are gonna have a baby,” Mythal explained, hoisting the girl up.

“Yaaay!” She cheered, giving a small wave with her hand in excitement. “Daddy, what’s that?” she immediately asked, pointing to a nearby booth.

The whims of a child, focused on one thing at one moment and then onto the next flashy thing the next. Mythal glanced over to see a booth with a man set up with three coffins. He remembered this from previous events. “That is a game,” he explained as he walked over while the rest of the group chattered about Mercury’s surprise pregnancy. “You try and guess where the candy is gonna be.”

“Fancy a try?” The attendant asked, holding up a piece of candy and tucking it under the nearest coffin.

“Sure, why not. Just to show her,” he said, giving the man a nod. The attendant grinned and then quickly shuffled the coffins, his hands a blur of motion and movement along with the tiny caskets. When they came to a stop, he gestured to the lot for Mythal to take his pick. He hummed and then pointed over to the left most coffin. The attendant lifted it… only to show nothing underneath. “A wonderful try,” the man said, handing the Director a ticket.

“It’s okay, daddy; here,” Naomi said, reaching into her pail and pulling out a wrapped piece of candy that looked oddly similar to the one that had been under the coffin.

“Well thank you, sweetie,” Mythal said, taking the candy and walking away. With his back turned, he didn’t notice as the man lifted up all three coffins and found the candy gone, his confused gaze lifting up to look at Mythal and Naomi as they returned to the group.

COME AT ME AND YOU'LL SEE
I'M MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

--- YOU THINK THAT YOU'LL BREAK ME, YOU'RE GONNA FIND IN TIME ---
It seemed Cedric was the only one brave enough to enjoy a fresh brewed concoction with her, though Saffron was earnestly surprised that Mercury had declined. She knew it was one of the Xocili’s favorites. Still she shrugged – their loss – and clinked her glass against Cedric’s before they both downed their drinks. It had taken a moment for her to figure out what her enchantment had done, and before she knew it she was having an argument with a bird. In the process, Cedric opened his mouth to make a remark, only to discover that he was incapable of talking.

“Awww shit…” A deep grin spread across her face even as Vandrad playfully insisted that it was a Christmas miracle. He even approached the other man and patted him on the cheek. Saffron was barely even attempting to stifle her giggling as the prince told Cedric to just speak up if he wanted to be left alone. “Yeah, we know how sensitive you are and shit. If we start to take things too far, just give us a shout.” She raised her fist up to Vandrad to bump it, chortling all over again in amusement when he insisted that he was going to have entirely too much fun with this kind of advantage over the former Dread Master.

By then, Mythal and Serilda had returned with the girls and Saffron turned her attention elsewhere for the time being. “You little munchkins are just the cutest things in the world, aren’t you?” she cooed at them. “I could just eat you up..!” Reaching down with her good hand, she scooped Alexia up, cradling her in her arm and holding her tight as she playfully pretended to eat her, much to the little girl’s squeals of delight.

Given how preoccupied she was with that, she almost missed Mercury’s admission entirely, a beat behind everyone else as the words retroactively settled in her head. “Wait, what..?” she said at the same time that Serilda flat out asked if Mercury was pregnant. At the confirmation that she was, Saffron sucked in a deep, audible gasp, her gaze flicking back and forth between Vandrad and Mercury. “Fu- God da- Heck yeah, dudes!!” She nearly forgot not to curse in front of the toddlers but managed to bring herself back around even as everyone else descended on the pair in their own ways.

Saffron set Alexia back down when it was her turn to do the same. “Congrats, guys! I’m so excited for you!” She gave Mercury a hug. Unlike Mythal, however, she did not force Vandrad into the same. The pair of them had hugged exactly once in all the time they’d known each other, and Saffron wasn’t about to repeat the experience for anything less than a life or death situation. So instead, she grinned up at him and gave him a playful slug on the shoulder. “Look at you, family man. You know, if it’s a girl, I have it on good authority that Saffron is an excellent name.”

She gave him a cheeky smirk while Mythal went off to play one of the nearby games with Naomi. Then, her eyebrows rose as another thought suddenly dawned on her. “Dude, your mom is going to freak out. I mean, your dad will too, but your mom is going to lose her mind. Just imagine the kind of baby shower she’s gonna throw.” Saffron had never been to one of Vandrad’s prior engagement parties, but she’d heard all about them, particularly the one Mercury crashed. She almost felt sorry for the amount of celebration and partying Themmy was going to insist on doing. Almost.

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
Vandrad had been understandably shocked when she’d told him she was pregnant. Mercury hadn’t exactly told him that she’d stopped blocking her procreation functions, which she’d done shortly after everything with Maker had been settled and concluded. In truth, she’d wanted to start considering that move much sooner than that, but hadn’t felt safe so long as Maker was a threat. Even now it was a bit of a concern with Seberg running around… but she wasn’t directly involved with Seberg just yet, who was currently more focused on Saffron and Cedric over the du Wolffs for the time being. They deserved the chance to live their lives and start a family, and if Seberg showed up, well.. He’d quickly pay for the mistake.

So she’d allowed her body to process their intercourse naturally, and it hadn’t taken very long for there to be a result. Even Vandrad was on cloud nine. He’d barely put up a fight about wearing a costume for the holiday, and was in jovial spirits, at least as far as those who knew him well could tell. She chuckled at him and Saffron teaming up to tease Cedric’s temporary muteness, only to drop the bomb on everyone so subtly that the silence seemed to crawl for hours as her words slowly sank in. Vandrad gave her a warm smile, one he typically only gave her in private, and she melted against his side as he wrapped his arm around her and pulled her against him.

Cedric couldn’t talk but that didn’t stop him from expressing his excitement with a pat on the future king’s shoulder and a thumbs up of approval. Serilda, Mythal, and Saffron were far more animated, however. Mercury grinned with pleasure as the Voidwalker practically bowled her over for a hug, and happy to give similar gestures to Mythal and Saffron as well. Naomi and Alexia were too young to really understand what everyone was so happy about, though Naomi at least asked only to be immediately distracted by other things.

As Mythal took her over to the game booth in question to try it out, Serilda asked a few questions. “I’m about two months in, so we’re looking around April sometime. You guys are the first ones we’ve told; we figure we’ll do something extra special when we announce it to our parents and the rest of the family. Most likely, it will push back the wedding a bit… but we’re not in a rush.” Like Serilda, Mercury wasn’t really keen on being pregnant for their wedding, which meant they’d either have to get married in the next couple months before she started showing, or wait until sometime after. With everything going on politically for New Rhaegar, it simply wasn’t feasible to make it work in such a quick turn around, so the delay would have to do.

Vandrad wasn’t going to try and hide his happiness at that moment. Usually he would try and play it down but there simply was no point; he was overjoyed and proud to finally be on the path to becoming a father. It was something that he and Mercury had discussed in small bouts, talking about some point in the future. She’d already gotten her fill of his surprise, as she hadn’t warned him of her altering her functions and allowing the possibility. There had been a lot of issues that had prevented them from landing on a preferable time frame but it seemed she had finally felt safe and comfortable enough to let nature run its course.

Everyone had to take a moment to catch up with Mercury’s lowkey reveal but once they had, they were all surprised. Serilda almost threw herself over Mercury, hugging the Xocili tight before moving over to hug him. Mythal was a bit more muted, though he did tease the future king over the fact that he’d made the leap to fatherhood. "It wasn’t exactly a manual choice of mine… but I’m happy myself,” he said, flashing a smirk. He turned his attention to Saffron, who gave him a punch on the shoulder and insisted that if they had a girl, her name was quite fitting. "Yes because the first thing I need is something else for you to gloat over,” he said with a playful scoff.

The blonde continued, stating that his mother was going to lose her mind when they told her. Themesycia did have a penchant for throwing lavish parties for any occasion and the revelation that she was going to be a grandmother was on par, if not greater, than his engagement. "I imagine it will be every insufferable party I’ve ever attended wrapped up into one loud, overdone extravaganza,” he said with a small sigh. But there was little doubt that with Mercury and their future child being the center of attention, he would be able to put up with the overabundance of celebratory functions and decorations.

Mythal and Naomi had wandered over to look at one of the event’s booths as Mercury explained how far along she was and the fact that it would push back the wedding. That wasn’t going to bother him one way or another, the only real benefit of being married was that Mercury would officially be named Queen. Otherwise, it wasn’t going to change much else in their lives. Naomi, the ever curious child, pointed to another area nearby, where dozens of people were dancing. Mythal explained that it was a dance contest and asked if she wanted to go try it out.

To everyone’s surprise, she did -- but not with the Director. She pointed right at Vandrad and stated, quite firmly, that she wanted him to dance, most likely with her as a partner. "Oh… uh…” he started, wanting to decline as politely as possible. But perhaps it was his good mood that caused him to pause, pondering for a moment before he smirked. "Alright. If that’s what you wish,” he said, walking over to scoop the dark-haired girl out of Mythal’s arms.

Cedric was grinning as he watched Vandrad walk over with Naomi in his arms. But his role as spectator was robbed of him a moment later as, inspired by her sister’s curiosity, Alexia spoke up and stated she wanted to join, pointing right at the former Dread Master as her partner. Unlike Vandrad, who had a moment of considering declining, Cedric was all too happy to fulfill the girl’s wishes. He scooped up the other twin and elegantly began to dance over to the floor, where Vandrad had already begun to box step with Naomi. The giggling and loud, excited exclamations from both girls was enough to draw the attention of the other dancers around, as well as the attendants. Soon the two men and the two girls were the only pairs left dancing, as everyone else had stopped to watch in awe of the adorable display.

It wasn’t much of a surprise when they were announced as joint winners, handing some extra candy for the girls and the participation tickets. Mythal was grinning from ear to ear when they came back over, waving his iLac around that was filled with dozens of photos of Cedric and Vandrad in various positions of the dance. While the girls showed off the ‘special’ candy they had won to everyone gathered around, Vandrad stepped back to stand beside Mercury, trying to hide the slight blush on his cheeks. "Who am I to tell my nieces no?” he said with a shrug.

Cedric laughed, or rather made the motion of laughing without any noise. He gave the future king a few pats on the shoulder, ignoring the eye rolls and his attempts to roll his shoulder away from the hits. "Alright, alright, enough,” Vandrad insisted, pushing Cedric’s hand away. "Let’s keep going. Standing around and interrupting the flow of the street…”

    Seri Banner
Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
“Oh, stop,” Serilda said, playfully smacking Mythal on the arm. She was smiling, but there was a deep blush on her cheeks. Mythal was never going to let her live down the results of last year’s Halloween celebration, and neither would most of the rest of their friends that now knew about what had happened. Serilda wasn’t ashamed of it, of course, but that didn’t mean the topic wouldn’t fluster her at least a little bit whenever it was brought up.

Thankfully, the subject was forgotten almost entirely under the revelation that Mercury and Vandrad were due for their first child. Serilda was ecstatic for them both, and reacted accordingly. Saffron was similarly excited, having to filter her response several times in light of the toddler in her arms before finding a way to express her joy curse free. Eager for more information, Serilda pressed for additional details and Mercury informed her that she was about two months along, and that the current group was the only one that knew so far.

Serilda nodded her understanding about the wedding needing to be pushed back. “Yes, I’m certainly more than familiar with that situation,” she remarked. Her and Mythal’s own wedding had been pushed back so long at this point that it almost felt like they weren’t even engaged anymore. Between having their own children, the war, and everything that had been going on with Maker and the Dread Masters, they’d simply had other priorities that were more pressing. Whether or not they were married held no bearing on their commitment to one another, so they just continued to leave it on the backburner.

The two separate conversations between Serilda and Mercury, and Saffron and Vandrad, were brought back together as Mythal returned with Naomi. The little girl asked about an area where people were dancing, to which her father explained what was going on. When asked if she wanted to dance, Naomi was quick to say that she did… but she wanted to dance with her uncle, pointing right at Vandrad. For the briefest of moments it seemed like he might decline, the future king clearly fumbling for some way to explain to a two year old that he disliked dancing without hurting her feelings. But it didn’t take him longer than a second or two before he found himself unable to say no, giving her a smirk and agreeing to the request.

He walked over and plucked her out of Mythal’s arms, leading the way to the dance floor and taking the young girl through the motions of a box step. Much like Mythal, Serilda had already started taking out her phone, eager to catch some evidence of the moment that was quickly causing her hormones to run rampant in ways that she was not going to admit out loud. It only got worse when Alexia decided that she also wanted to participate, and announced that Cedric was going to be her dance partner. Unlike Vandrad, Cedric didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation, scooping her up and joining up with the other two, leaving Mythal standing with three women that were practically transfixed on the sight.

“Honestly, if you two do wind up having a girl,” Serilda told Mercury without looking away from the dance floor, “He’s done for.” Being a father was one thing, but being a father to a little girl had a way of pulling at a man’s heart like no other. If Vandrad was having this much trouble saying no to his niece, it was only going to be worse when it was his own kid. He’d probably be wrapped around her finger.

All of them watched as even the crowds taking notice of the two men, making space to give them the spotlight until it was just the four of them out there. When the song was ultimately over, they were announced as joint winners. Serilda was too busy recording the moment on her phone to clap, but she still cheered along with everyone else. Vandrad was blushing a bit when he returned and found all the women giving him and Cedric looks that left little to the imagination about how fond they had been on watching the display. He insisted that he didn’t have the heart to tell the girls no, doing his best to brush it off. Cedric attempted to tease him, if silently, to which Vandrad insisted that they move along instead of clogging up the street.

Serilda shook her head, smirking. “Alright girls, let’s go see what other games they have.” The group moved along and wound up stopping at a bobbing for apples station that had caught the girls’ attention. It wasn’t exactly an ideal game for children, due to putting your face underwater and having to bite into an apple that was much bigger than a child’s mouth. But they still insisted on experiencing the game in some way, and soon enough Serilda found herself in line to give it a try.

Bracing her hands on the side of the tub to keep her balance, she pressed her face against the surface of the water and started pushing the apples around in an attempt to sink her teeth into one. Eventually she managed to snag one, pulling herself upright with the fruit between her teeth, only to suddenly feel a sharp and unexpected pain rip through her lip. Her eyes went wide and she jumped a little, pulling the apple away to find that it had a pair of teeth all its own that it had used to bite her back. “Well that was just unnecessary,” she murmured with a frown, rubbing her lip which was quickly turning red and showing some swelling. It was a good thing neither of her daughters had tried playing…

    LIGHT
    &
    DARK

It hadn't even occurred to Mythal that the candy that Naomi had handed him out of the kindness of her heart had been the one that had been hidden. He figured, as anyone would have, that it was just one she had rummaged around and pulled out from her candy bag, to aid in any ‘sadness’ he may have had about losing. It was a truly sweet gesture and he happily undid the wrapper and popped the candy into his mouth to show his appreciation, oblivious to the vendor behind them that had slowly started to wonder.

As they returned, Naomi’s head was once more on a swivel, far more interested in the events going on around them than the conversation. Her young, excitable mind was far too entranced by the promise and prospect of fun events that simply talking wasn’t going to garner any kind of serious consideration on her part. As they came to a stop in front of the group, she was gently tugging at Mythal’s shirt and pointing over at yet another event. *”Daddy, that looks like fun!”* she stated as the Director turned his attention to where she was pointing.

It was some kind of dance competition, where couples had paired up and were being judged based on their technique. “Sure does,” he replied. “You wanna go dancin’?”

*”Yah!”* she cheered. But just as Mythal began to move, she turned her gaze to Vandrad and pointed at him. *”Uncle dance!”* she proclaimed, declaring her desire to dance with the future king. Vandrad looked about as bewildered as he would at any offer such as that and, for a moment, it looked like he was trying to find the best way to turn her down without hurting her feelings -- not an easy task with a toddler. But that brief moment passed and with a small smirk, he agreed, walking over to pick her up and carry her over to the dance floor, much to her delight and glee.

“Oh Gren is gonna die,” Mythal said with a grin as he pulled out his iLac, planning to take so many more pictures. As if that wasn’t precious enough, Alexia spoke up about her desire to dance as well and directed her attention to the mute Cedric, wanting him to be her partner. Unlike Vandrad, there was no hesitance in the silent former Dread Master, happily hoisting the girl up, who squealed in delight, and dancing her over to the competition floor. Now with both men dancing, the rest of them gathered to watch, snapping pictures and yelling out encouraging cheers. “Yeah, she’s gonna be a princess in more than one way,” Mythal agreed with Seri, holding back his giggles as much as he could.

The rest of the competitors couldn’t deny the adorable sight, as one by one, the pairs came to a standstill and watched Vandrad and Cedric lead the girls around. When the song came to an end, the four were announced as the winners of the dance competition, earning a loud and vibrant cheer from everyone in the area. Vandrad returned with a blush on his face, admitting he couldn’t turn the girls down, trying to ignore the looks from all the women of appreciation and fondness at both he and Cedric’s willingness to partake. The former Dread Master teased the future king, causing him to finally snap about them standing around and insisting they continue onward. “Your mother is gonna melt, Vandrad. Gren too,” Mythal teased, showing him a few of the pictures before weaving away so the former prince didn’t snatch his phone.

They carried on, moving onto another station where a bunch of apples had been put in the water. It seemed the point of the game was to try and get an apple with one’s mouth. Serilda got in line to partake, the girls giggling as their mother set herself down in front of the basin and then dipped her face in. It took her a moment but eventually she managed to snag one, only to yelp in pain as she came up. She pried the apple away, revealing a set of teeth on the fruit as well that it had used to bite her back. “Leave it to this holiday to have fruit that bites ya back,” Mythal said with a small chuckle.

COME AT ME AND YOU'LL SEE
I'M MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

--- YOU THINK THAT YOU'LL BREAK ME, YOU'RE GONNA FIND IN TIME ---
Vandrad gave a dry remark about not giving Saffron any more ammunition against him than she already had, causing the blonde to give him a cheeky grin. He also seemed to be in agreement that his mother’s reaction to the news was going to be one for the record books, far surpassing everything he’d experienced in his life thus far when it came to engagement parties. “Man, I can’t wait to see that.”

She might have continued teasing him about it, except for the fact that Naomi decided she wanted to dance with Vandrad. Saffron’s heart practically melted from how adorable it was, only for her to fix Vandrad with a sharp look when he took too long to agree, like she was daring him to make the mistake of saying no. Thankfully, he made the right choice. Saffron was giggling merrily as she watched her mentor walk away with Naomi in tow, only for Alexia to speak up and demand the same of Cedric.

“Is this actually happening right now?” she asked after Cedric picked the girl up and went to join the dance floor. Saffron was beside herself. She’d never claimed to be attracted to Vandrad, for all that she was objectively aware that he was very good looking, but for a woman such as herself that loved children as much as she did, it was quite the sight to see the normally brutish and standoffish future king waltz about with a tiny little girl in his arms.

And that was nothing in comparison to Cedric doing the same. Saffron did her best not to stare but there was no denying that seeing him so shamelessly and genuinely humoring the other twin was pulling at her heartstrings. If she hadn’t been painfully aware already of how much she loved him, she certainly was now. The sight was both a blessing and a curse, the blonde touched and enamored while also saddened by the reminder at how hard she’d fucked up in choosing Xavier over Cedric.

When the two men returned, Saffron had to look away for a moment, pretending to be distracted by a passing group of costumed individuals until she could get her emotions under control. Or, at least her face. When she turned back to them, there was still a slight blush on her cheeks and she was having some difficulty meeting Cedric’s eyes. Thankfully, Vandrad and Cedric both left an opening for her to do some teasing. “Aww, what’s the matter big guy? You don’t have to be ashamed, we all know you’re just a big old softie deep inside.”

They moved along and stopped next to an apple bobbing game, which Serilda elected to play after some encouragement from her daughters. “Man, I gotta say this has been pretty nice,” the blonde said to the rest of the group while Serilda did her thing. And just in case anyone thought Saffron was getting sentimental, she continued. “I have never had so much peace and quiet with Cedric around. Where’d that vendor go? I should get the recipe for whatever he made and start slipping it into Cedric’s drinks.”

She had just enough time to grin up at the man in question before a pained sound from Serilda drew Saffron’s attention back to where the Voidwalker appeared to have been bitten by the apple that she’d gotten a hold of. The blonde grimaced. “Ouch. That’s gonna sting for a while… And probably leave a gnarly bruise on her face.”

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
Mercury was snickering outright when Naomi insisted on dancing with Vandrad, amused by the way her fiance fumbled to find an appropriate response that didn’t involve hurting a toddler’s feelings. In the end he succumbed to the demand, giving a smirk and picking up his niece to take her out to the dance floor, only to be quickly followed by Cedric and Alexia. “Oh my stars,” she remarked, equally as entranced as the other two women standing beside her, if with a look that was more amusement than anything else. “Now that is a sight for the ovaries.”

Serilda remarked about Vandrad’s future, should their child be a daughter, and Mercury’s smirk deepened. “Oh, he’d be fuckin’ screwed.” Watching him now, swaying back and forth and putting his royal upbringing to use with the practiced and coordinated box steps of a prince, she knew he’d wind up agreeing to a number of otherwise degrading or humiliating activities if it meant making the kid happy. Her heart swelled at the thought, and at the sight. Mercury had never known she could feel this happy. Even a year ago it would have been hard for her to imagine. But now? Now it was simply her life… and she planned on never taking that for granted.

Eventually the men returned after a resounding tie between them for the dance contest, the group cheering them for the victory and congratulating the girls. Vandrad did his best to brush off the teasing looks and (in Cedric’s case) pantomimes for his efforts, blushing and grumbling and insisting they get moving so as not to block off the street. The result was a playful remark about Saffron insisting that the gruff front did nothing to hide his teddy bear interior. “And just think,” Mercury tacked on with a grin of her own, “It’s only going to get worse from here. May as well make peace with it now.”

Either way the group carried on, and Serilda stopped at a booth where one was supposed to pick an apple from a barrel of water with only their teeth. It was indescribably amusing to see a woman as poised and dignified as Serilda bend over a crate to shove her face around in fruit filled water, but the woman was nothing if not dedicated to being a good mother. Soon enough she was able to collect an apple, only to find that it had the ability to bite her back. Mercury winced alongside Saffron… but in the end, the Rune Knight didn’t appear to be too badly hurt. It was certainly red and probably painful, but likely wouldn’t cause any lasting damage. With that out of the way, they continued on to see what else the night had to offer.
