Masha double checked the map in her hand. The place marked with a big X appeared to be about where she was standing. She readjusted the pack on her back. The hike into the Phoenix mountains had been difficult. Aodhfin and Caius had urged her not to go. Their insistence had largely been because she refused to have them along. They were to guard Giovanni. Her son took a higher priority for safety then she did. They needed to understand that fact. Masha would pursue her research until it was completed.
A mysterious bird statue brought her into the Phoenix Mountains. Survivors of the statue's vicious attacks claimed the large bird animated suddenly. It attacked each and every one without fail. They couldn't tell what had trigger the animation nor did it appear to be guarding anything The variety of attacks held Masha's interest. Thus the slayer had decided to obtain the bird for herself. It would aid her research while also making the Phoenix Mountains safe for travelers. There might even be a treasure at the end of the road.
Masha didn't want to admit to herself that she wasn't being altruistic. Nothing in her heart cared an iota about travelers. Whether this made the mountains safe for travelers didn't matter to her. All the redhead wanted here revolved around obtaining the bird. Its animation process, its elemental attacks, the bird's size were all locked away in the creature's body. That body could unlock aspects for her research she hadn't thought possible. The Biomagitech hadn't gotten as far as Masha might have hoped. She'd produced a single working model to date. One singular finger that she hadn't been able to upgrade. That lack of progress frustrated the doctor.
Masha pushed the map into her bag. The bird statue didn't appear to be anywhere nearby. She slowly slid the pack to the ground. Reaching inside, Masha unveiled a heart shaped shield. Another dip into the bag and a horn pendant got clipped onto her belt. Both objects had belonged to her previous self. The next item, a red scale gauntlet, Masha had made all by herself. With a bit of help, the doctor managed to design and enchant this new piece. Wearing all of them made Masha feel whole. Like her old self and her new self were working in harmony despite whatever differences they might have.
The redhead looked around the slope. Ahead of her was a forest of tall dark trees. A dark aura emanated from the boughs. Red eyes appeared to gleam from the safety of the darkness. Masha doubted casual travelers went in there. Below her sat a field of broken rocks. They appeared to have been shattered from a great height. A small wonder entered her mind. Had dragons broken an army here? Did she sit above a field of corpses? Had an old battle been waged here long ago?Above her, in the distance sat a fair amount of snow. Masha dismissed that route from her mind as well as the field of rocks. Neither seemed to be a casual traveler's choice. The redhead peered behind her. There lay a sheer cliff, dropping into a small crater carved into the mountain's side. Masha smiled slowly.
