This wasn’t what she’d expected to find when leaving her home and Charlotte was almost overwhelmed by all the lights and noise around her. She’d come to Fiore hoping to make a fresh start in a quiet spot and yet she found herself surrounded by people wearing costumes. The young mage had only just climbed off of the boat from Minstrel and had instantly walked into what seemed to be a Halloween event of some kind or from what she could tell. Dressed as a maid, the only outfit she had, the teenager didn’t know if her garb was fitting but judging from those around her, no one seemed to mind. It was hard for her to look anyone in the eye though and for the most part, she kept her head down, trying not to trip over her own feet due to her nerves and anxiousness. She wanted to get out of the public eye as soon as possible.

Unfortunately for the girl, her stomach had other ideas, rumbling deeply and causing her to pause. She hadn’t eaten anything since fleeing her home and her body was clearly rebelling against the poor treatment, resulting in her head snapping up as she smelt the sweet scent of apples coming from nearby. Turning, she’d see a display that was littered with the fruit, along with a bucket where a young man was trying to grab an apple from using his teeth alone. Charlotte had seen such games back home although the liquid inside the bucket certainly wasn’t water. No, the man she’d served had it filled with alcohol instead, where he and his friends could drink and play games at the same time.

After a few seconds thinking about whether to try the game or not herself, a second rumble from her stomach seemed to make the decision for her and with a sigh, the maid would approach the now free bucket and gently nodded her head towards the stall owner, who smiled back in response. Putting her hair back, Charlotte would bend down over the bucket and start to bob, trying to get a grip on one of the apples, looking forward to tasting one of the lovely fruits. Her technique wasn’t that great and she was very timid but sooner or later, she managed to get a grip on one of them.

For a moment, everything went well but all of a sudden, she felt a sharp pain on her lip as the apple bit her back, causing Charlotte to shriek and raise her head, throwing the apple away. She’d then put her hand to her lip, noticing a small bloody mark and tears would start to build up in her eyes. The stall owner at first looked as though he was going to make fun but seeing the look on her face, instead decided against it and passed her a ticket instead, telling her that if she collected four, she would receive a prize.

More miserable than ever, the takeover mage would make a beeline away from the booth, hoping that she could find a nicer task to take part in next.

It was hard for her to think positively and as Charlotte’s eyes flickered from left to right, she had to fight hard not to just burst into tears. She should have been happy to have escaped from her past life but the maid knew so little about life outside her Master’s house that the white haired girl was overwhelmed. What would she do? Where could she go? Would she just be caught and sent back to Minstrel again? That last thought made her shudder and there was a brief moment where in her unease, her left hand would start to change into a spider leg, causing her to almost shriek in fright. She hadn’t yet mastered her magic, having only discovered it when she’d made her escape and it was still a complete mystery to her. Why a spider of all things? A creature that so many people were afraid of? Gods, it made her feel even more lonely.

She was finally brought out of her unhappy thoughts when an angry voice reached her ears, causing her to violently jump in surprise, her head snapping up again. It was a young woman, who was screaming at a man who was standing behind a stall. The lady was awfully mad and once she’d unleashed a barrage of abuse towards him, she’d stamp away, leaving the man to simply smile and chuckle. A weird reaction in Charlotte’s opinion and as he looked around and saw her, he would beckon the mage towards his stall. At first, she had no intention of taking him up on his suggestion but with a sigh and shrug of her shoulders, she’d eventually walk over to him, wondering just what trick he was going to pull on her.

As it turned out, his game was rather simple, putting a piece of candy into one of the three toy coffins that were lying on the table. Charlotte didn’t need any instructions, figuring out for herself and simply nodded her head when he asked if she wanted to try. With that, he would start moving them around at a quick pace, all the while Charlotte would watch the one that she thought had the candy in it. He was good with his hands but the takeover mage was sure that she’d gotten it right, so much so that she was quite quick to point at the middle one fairly quickly.

Yet, as what seemingly was becoming a thing, her chosen coffin would open to reveal nothing inside, much to her displeasure. Her face fell at the result but she at least managed to earn a ticket, which he offered her with a small smile. Charlotte was becoming so disheartened and with a dutiful nod, she’d walk off once again, heading into the throng of people that would explore the festival. She wasn’t sure if she could take a third failure but the thought of winning a prize kept her going, trying to find a bright side in what was turning into an unhappy first day for her.

There wasn’t much that caught her interest for a little while and Charlotte soon started to wonder if maybe she should just walk away and find somewhere to spend the night. The festival hadn’t exactly been a success so far and the teenager’s frail spirits were at risk of collapse. She wasn’t used to anything that was going on around her but any time she thought of maybe going back, she remembered the horrors that had caused her to leave in the first place. No, Charlotte couldn’t ever go back and she’d do whatever it took to stop that from happening. Yet, she was at somewhat of a loss as to how to proceed. She needed to find somewhere to call her own and perhaps discover the knowledge that she sought. There was so much about the world that she didn’t know, both magically and in general. Her life had been sheltered in many ways, hardly ever leaving her Master’s mansion and she knew so little about many topics.

It was a lovely scent that eventually brought her out of her miserable thoughts again and the girl found her eyes turning towards a large cauldron, which had a tall woman wearing a witch costume stirring it. A potion maker of some sort, she assumed and once again, her stomach spoke for her, resulting in her eventually mustering up the courage to approach the woman and ask to drink some. Yet, rather than be allowed a drink, the woman would instead smile at her and point towards a second cauldron, where a number of ingredients were sitting on a small table beside it. Clearly, the witch wanted her to try and make something herself and given that she could cook pretty well, the maid was actually quite confident that she could pull this off.

So she got to work, her hands moving delicately as she helped herself to an ample supply of the ingredients, both sweet and savoury. Playing it completely by ear, the teenager would amazingly start to hum with joy as she worked, happy to be doing something that she had some experience with. The smell that was soon coming from her cauldron was potent enough that it was attracting the attention of other people and after a good twenty minutes or so, her concoction would be finished, with the contents of her cauldron looking light brown, like a nice cup of tea.

The witch would smile, glancing at the concoction, before encouraging Charlotte to taste her work and without any hesitation, the young girl would take a glass and do just that. It tasted rather sweet and at first nothing seemed to happen but after a minute or so, her outfit would suddenly change into that of a witch, much to her bemusement, with her hair even changing so that it was jet black in colour. The watchers clapped and a few even asked to try her potion, which she happily allowed them to do, pleased that she’d done well. With a proud grin, the witch would hand Charlotte another ticket, before the girl would move along once more, leaving her new fans to have fun with her potion.

In a happier mood, Charlotte was actually able to walk around with her head up for a bit, looking for something else to do. Her success with the potion had done wonders for her confidence and she happily walked past the stalls that were all around her. Perhaps life wouldn’t be so bad after all and maybe there was a chance that she could make something of herself here. She’d heard of organisations that mages joined up too in order to find work and she pondered if she could try and find one for herself. It frightened her in a way, having to talk to a load of strangers but what could she do? Walk around on her own forever? What if her old Master tried to find and claim her again? That thought made her shiver and she did her best to quickly push it out of her mind.

Her next little adventure actually was one that she walked into by accident as she was suddenly swept up alongside about a dozen or so other girls and found herself taking part in a contest of some kind. With her issues, it was a bit of a nightmare for her to have to do such a thing and her cheeks turned bright red as she followed the others as they showed off their lovely outfits. She didn’t have the confidence to act as freely as them but Charlotte did her best, dancing in a Minstrel style that seemed to capture the attention of those watching. It was embarrassing for the maid but actually a little exciting as well although she couldn’t explain why. There was just something captivating about it all and the longer she danced for, the louder the crowd became, cheering and clapping their hands. A smile eventually broke across her face, lighting up her face in a way that seemed to steal the breath from those watching.

When it all came to an end, there was only one winner and the maid curtsied in front of the crowd as they roared their approval towards her. The runner of the competition would approach her then and hand her another silver ticket, the last one she needed. She’d completed her task and as he walked away from her, she’d turn back towards the crowd and give them an encore, her dancing soon enough getting them cheering again. She’d never imagined that her first day in Fiore would be like this and despite the unfortunate side, Charlotte had come to enjoy her time at the festival.

If this was how her time in the country was going to be then perhaps she might just find some happiness after all.
