The iLac, it was basically one of the most important things anyone should have nowadays. Or so the brochure read. Tim had been briefed by one of the iLac agents on how the device works while the young man had been reading their papers. There were different kinds, even spec sheets for each version of the device like some heavy equipment catalogue. Tim was overwhelmed by everything, but tried keeping a calm head (at least on the outside).

“…that’s basically the summary of how it works.” The agent looked at him expectantly.

“Right. I understand half of what you said.” Tim scratched his chin. “How much does it all cost anyway?”

“We have a standard model we give off.” He said proudly.

“With no strings attached?” Tim quirked his brow. That sounded a little far-fetched.

“Well, if you somehow get your iLac roughed up we’ll charge you for the repairs.” The agent said honestly. “And the company has a very good semi-monopoly of the device.”

“If you put it that way.”

Tim was handed the device in question. It had a white frame and an empty black screen which was slightly larger than what Tim could wrap his hand around. Tim might have only understood half of the agent’s ramblings, but his trained listening skills hadn’t failed him as he accessed the device as the agent had described earlier.

The screen glowed and a slew of slick looking interface bombarded the screen. These icons were called ‘Applications’ and could do some very efficient things for the young man. “This looks pretty neat, actually.”

“I’ll let you have your way with it and see if I can persuade you with actually buying an even better model instead.” He smiled as he walked into one of the other patrons fiddling with their own iLac.

Tim was too focused with the lacrima to reply to the agent. There was a calendar, a calculator and an alarm clock too? This thing had everything! “It looks like I could break it if it falls though.”

With how Tim’s work would eventually end up, this might not be the wisest things to bring along. But he couldn’t help but feel impressed by it. There was also an iLac identification code which lets these devices connect to each other. “Wonder if I could do that with Edna…”

The agent came back and helped Tim properly set up his device. His identification code, applications synchronized and access to the Lacrima-net. Tim didn’t know how the last one works exactly; he had only seen the ‘net’ at his old line of work. The pencil pushers in the company access it through their Archive Magic, but the only thing he had used this ‘net’ for was to look at prospective equipment. It won’t stop him from trying to make sense of it, though.

In a span of a few minutes the agent had given him the device back. “Aaaand here you go.”

Tim pocketed the iLac and thanked the agent. Tim had taken his way and purposefully gotten this device, this had better been worth it.
