'Impressive.' It was a very simple thought. The only one that came to mind while watching the activity below towards the beach and in the ocean waters. A mortal, armed with nothing but a strange board, had somehow made the ocean their own and commanded it to take them back to shore as if it were a mount. Plenty had failed to do so prior to this particular mortal accomplishing the task. As the angelic spirit watched further, plenty more still used those odd riding boards to try for themselves to command the ocean. What an odd thing to do when surely the prior mortal had already proven themselves as the master.

What the spirit had just witnessed was just a typical surfing contest. One that was hosted by the great gathering down at the beach outside of town. She knew well to recognize the gathering as a festival of sorts. Those were not new to her sight. The surfing activity was. At that particular moment she did not even know what it was called. Her ignorance came from her lack of dealings with mortals that lived near the ocean. Well, technically it probably came from much more than that, but it could start there as a base. Her wanderings were mostly done further inland and not the ocean's boundaries.

Much earlier the angelic spirit that had been given the name Eyir long ago had appeared in the port town that was called Cedar. It was a strange name for the town. Eyir had expected its most notable trait to be a multitude of cedar trees that were unrivaled by any other town or nation. Instead, she had heard rumors that it was a gothic-style cathedral that stood as the town's most famous attraction. It had to be seen. So, as the angel spirit had always done in the past, she dropped everything and set out to find the famous cathedral.

That was several hours ago. The sun had not fully risen yet when her ethereal wings brought her to the desired destination. Eyir did not spend much time on the ground looking up at the grand cathedral, however. After a quick minute the angel's wings lifted her up and took her all the way to its highest point on the roof. There she stayed as the clock continued to tick and the day progressed. She was comfortable there. The sounds of the church soothed her. For hours she played the part of a statue that remained still and watched the town go about its day. The final gentle hues of dawn turned into the brightness of morning, and that morning turned into the intense afternoon that was dominated by the sun. Not a single cloud was in the sky that day. The weather was what those down below would declare as perfect for the beach party that was to be held that day.

Eyir watched the coordinators of the event set up everything. Then she watched as the citizens of the town as well as visitors started to fill the beach and partake in the activities. It was entertaining for her to watch them. For hours the thought of going there herself had not even crossed her mind. She was content to be where she was. The newest statue of Cedar's cathedral doing nothing but watching those down below.

Mid-afternoon hit. Quietly for her. The sounds of the festival were distant much like the rest of the town while she remained so high up. Curiosity grew. There was nothing else to do but watch and think. Before she would have remained there all day. Content to only watch a festival instead of joining in. She was rarely truly comfortable around typical mortals. At least when it came to socialization and the many festivals and parties mortals tended to have. Unlike many others that might have greatly stood out in appearance, Eyir did not have a magical disguised form to hide behind and blend in. She just had the one. The form that resembled an armored angel for the most part. Perhaps some would have just assumed it was the form of a powerful mage. One that was strong in the use of holy magic and was able to conjure onto themselves the aspect of such a being. Eyir was anything but strong as she currently was, however, and her shrouded face was more than enough to bring discomfort. Mortals feared the unknown normally, and those that had tried to peer through the dark fog only ever saw nothing. There was much unknowing when it came to her.

Things were different now though, weren't they? Eyir had wanted to get more involved with those that existed in the same world as she. Joining one of the many guilds of the world had also been a plan that formed in the angel spirit's mind. A sudden one it seemed at the time, but perhaps it had been in the works of her subconscious for years. There had even already been one guild in mind that stood out from the rest. A newer one but also one that had been quick to grow in name and reputation.

She had decided. If things were to change then she would have to make some effort. The joining of a simple beach party was not at all a bad place to start. Finally the newest statue moved. Not that anyone was looking up to take notice of it. Once again the ethereal light of her wings took her up into the air. She left the confines of the cathedral, allowing her wings to take her to the ocean shore where the festival was. She was there in no time. Gently she descended onto the sand and now stood among the others that had come.

The attention she immediately gained upon landing was obvious. A variety of stares and low spoken comments. Although if she were being honest she was starting to consider that maybe the attention she was getting at that moment was not because of her form but because of what she was wearing. Eyir was in full plated and metal armor with a cloth hood. Everyone else was pretty much half naked. The males wore no shirts and the females... well some had more material covering their flesh than others. It certainly was a questionable choice for a festival uniform.

"Want to try Horse Shoe Throwing?!" A loud and overly excited woman's voice broke through all the other distractions that were overwhelming the angel spirit. It was hard for it not to, especially when said woman broke all definitions of personal space and waved a plastic horseshoe directly in front of Eyir's shrouded face. Any closer and the horseshoe would have been engulfed in it.

The event coordinator stood there with a wide toothy grin, expecting a response. Obviously a "yes" because who wouldn't want to play a game of horseshoe tossing? She would be disappointed. Eyir stood there silently. As did the woman. The pair both stood as still as statues. Eventually the woman had to blink, and then soon after her grin fell to turn her face into an expression of inquisitive curiosity. "Actually can you even see through that thing to play?" She shook her head and shrugged her shoulders. "Nevermind. I'm sure you'll hit something even if you can't see. HAHA!" The horseshoe was forced into Eyir's hands, as were four more that the woman took out of a bag she held over her shoulder. Now that she had armed the weirdly dressed festival goer with horseshoes the woman got out of the way and gave her a gentle push to face the pegs that were in the sand.

Eyir was mildly confused. Mortals made a game of tossing horse accessories? She held the first horseshoe up to better look at it, trying to understand why this was even a game to be played. Her shrouded face turned to look around her. Others nearby were playing the game as well. Each one tossing one of the horseshoes one after the other in an attempt to hit a peg in the sand. Eyir decided to follow their example.

A horseshoe was tossed. It hit the top of the peg and bounced off and onto the sand. A miss. Another attempt was also a miss. Again. Again. Until the final horseshoe was lying on the sand next to the peg instead of around it. All five had missed. That game was not one she was a natural at. Tossing horseshoes was not a skill she had ever worked on. There was no disappointment within her regarding the result. It was reality. Eyir had no plans to be the champion of horseshoe tossing.

"Awww, looks like you didn't hit even one. Maybe you should try removing the hood next time so you can see better." The event coordinator had come back, grinning cheerfully. Instead of holding horseshoes this time she was now holding a bright blue flower necklace of sorts. Eyir did not know what it was. Before she could question it the cheerful woman had slipped it over her head and around her neck. "Here is your participation reward! I hope you have better luck in the next activity you do! I suggest giving Fishing a shot! Or maybe even Limbo! Just avoid the surfing unless you want to sink with all of that armor on!" The woman giggled and walked away to focus her attention on another person passing by.

Eyir continued to stand there and watch her go for a moment. Then she gave the new accessory a bit of attention. She gave it a look while holding it up a bit. The color she liked. She couldn't tell its texture due to her plate covered hands, and even if they were not covered she wouldn't have been able to feel. Light and spirit essence didn't exactly have nerves. A pity. The flowers probably smelt nice, but she couldn't tell that either.

Someone had finally told her to move. They wanted to play the horseshoe game and she was in the way. That was fine. She was done there. The angelic spirit wanted to move on to the next activity. The cheery woman had mentioned something about Fishing and Limbo, but upon finding the latter Eyir was not so certain she could actually do that one. Her wings would get in the way right away. The mortals already participating were also more nimble than she was. Some movements she was certain should not have been physically possible.

Eyir eventually did not have a choice in the matter. She was pushed into the line by accident by some random reveler, and no one seemed to mind that it was practically a cut in the organization. Her turn came very quickly. Only the general idea of the game was all she knew. Don't touch the ground. Don't touch the bar. Treat them both like a terrible disease that must be avoided at all costs. With that in mind Eyir pulled her ethereal wings in as much as she could and then she went under the bar, bending over slightly and walking right under it. The bar wasn't set low just yet. The game had restarted just before she was pushed into line and so it was still early game.

The tropical party music continued as the rounds went on. As expected Eyir didn't make it very far. Just before mid-game was all she could get through before she accidentally knocked the bar off the upright poles that held it. It was just as well. She didn't want to have to figure out how to bend herself in such awful ways during the late game. Regardless of her failure, another lei was her reward. A bright orange flower necklace joined the blue one around her neck. The colors clashed horribly. Maybe that was the point. Eyir wondered what color she would get with the next activity. By that point she suspected all of the games gave the necklaces regardless of failure.

The Fishing Contest was next on the angel spirit's list. Not out of personal interest really, but solely because it had been recommended. Eyir had no interest in fishing before, or even knew how. There was no need for her to have the skill. Until now. As a positive she was not the only amateur present. As the angelic spirit walked to the fishing area she could see children and adults alike looked as if they had no idea what they were doing. Even among the mortals that relied on the skill there existed those that were quite bad at it.

After dealing with the very confused fishing contest coordinator that couldn't get past her choice of beachwear, Eyir now had a fishing pole of her own and was entered into the contest. It had already started a couple of minutes prior to her arrival but considering each round lasted fifteen minutes she had some time to attempt something. Like before she studied the others around her and did as they did. Sort of. She missed a few details such as adding bait. At least she cast the line into the water well enough. Now came the part of standing there. Waiting. That part wasn't new to her at all.

Eyir continued to stare out into the ocean, fully focused on the small bobber that floated on the water's surface. Several minutes passed, the angelic spirit non-moving. Nothing happened. Not a tug of the line, not a splash, not even a quick nibble. Granted there was nothing there for a fish to nibble on besides a sharp hook, but the fact remained the same. The contest eventually came to an end. Eyir had caught absolutely nothing. Were the fish wary of her? Or was she just really that bad at the skill? A question for another time. Eyir was satisfied with the third lei that she had been given once the contest ended. Now a purple one joined the other two. Just what was she going to do with those necklaces at the end of the day anyway?

What was there left to do as far as activities went? It had been going pretty well so far, and Eyir did not want to end things so soon. As if some overpowered unseen force knew exactly what she was thinking, there was an announcement made about a sandcastle contest. What a coincidence. It was set to start soon and the coordinators were looking for more people to join in. How wonderful. Another activity that Eyir knew very little about. How did one make castles out of sand on the beach? It wasn't until she got to the contest location and observed that she understood. They were not supposed to make grand castles of royalty. The contest was to make a miniature castle. That made more sense. It was more of a children's activity. That wasn't going to stop her from giving it a try.

Eyir was now a contest participant. She found a nice little spot by the water to be used for her creation space. There was some mild concern about her armor. It was already sandy just from walking around the beach, and now it was going to be more so with her kneeling down onto it. Wetter sand even. An armored hand also wasn't the best way to handle sand wither. True it was better than trying to push sand together with light or spirit essence, in which that wouldn't work at all, but it was still disadvantageous.

Some time had passed on by with the angel spirit trying to smush sand together into some kind of castle form. The shape of castles were not unknown to her. She had seen many in the past. Yet trying to make one out of sand was proving to be much more difficult than she expected. Many times her creation fell apart into sandy clumps. If her goal was to display a destroyed castle she had done well.

One last effort was put into making a glorious sand castle. Finally it was all coming together. The angelic spirit was giving the castle a few more pats to make sure it stayed together when the unthinkable happened. A large wave had come onto the shore. In the ocean that rolling wave was what any surfer could ask for. On the shore it was a sandcastle builder's worst nightmare. The land around her beautiful castle flooded. It didn't take long for it to turn into mush after that. It was now a representation of a castle within a kingdom of ruin. As creative as the description could be, that wasn't likely an acceptable entry for the contest.

The contest came to an end. There was not enough time for Eyir to make another attempt at re-building her sandcastle. She lost the contest. A participation lei was given. The fourth of the collection. Its vivd yellow coloring added to the rainbow she wore around her neck. She still had no idea what to do with them after the day was done. They were not something she would ever wear again. The angelic spirit also didn't have the space to keep them as souvenirs. Perhaps that would be corrected soon. For now she dared not trash them. She liked them. There was just a limit to how many she desired and tolerated, and that limit had been reached.

For the rest of the afternoon Eyir did not participate in the rest of the activities. She sat herself at an empty table and watched the party, much like she had done from the cathedral's roof. Now she had a much better view. The afternoon turned to evening, and the evening soon turned to nightfall. Summer tropical torches and strings of colorful lights lit up to fight the darkness that threatened the party. Many had already gone home hours ago, but the nighttime revelers planned to continue. Eyir continued to watch.
