"FOR MAD SCIENCE!! TIME TO GET EXCITED, YOU GUYS."

DON'T BLINK NEUTRAL 10Y JOB DESCRIPTION

    DON'T BLINK JOB SIGNUP APPROVAL

It had been some time since Faustein had gone on his latest couple of adventures. The first of these had taken place in Desierto and had involved him assisting a woman named “Luna” with the attempted rescue of a large group of passengers who were being harassed by a rather queer group of pirate entities from outer space. After that, in the other of his latest adventures, Faustein had been called upon to serve with honor by “Hamou”, the ifrit djinn who was the royal assistant of the djinn king, “Iblis” who was said to rule over the legendary hidden kingdom of the djinn called “Jinnistan” with his consort and three daughters along with their retinue. The task for Faustein in this second adventure had been to successfully rescue, “Maliqah”, the first princess of the djinn people from a small army of marauding mercenaries who had been hired by some mysterious client to kidnap said first djinn princess along with her arch succubus handmaiden, “Eisheth”, for some nefarious ends.

In this second adventure, Faustein had been assisted by the guildmate he had recently met, aka “Maddox”, and with whom he had gone on other adventures immediately prior to his latest adventures in Desierto like their participation in the recently held Valentine’s Day festivities to which she had dragged him in a most unceremonious manner and in the border skirmish between Bellum and Pergrande, with Faustein and “Maddox” along with some other mages fighting for Bellum against the invading Pergrande army and the combatants therein to which he had dragged her without warning or preamble in revenge for her dragging him to the Valentine’s Day festivities which had occurred before that.

Since finishing up  the job the train passenger rescue job and the one which had been requested to undertake by the djinn king, Faustein had once again returned to the grind of his daily life in Fiore. That is, he had gone back to working further at his profession as a practicing, full qualified physician-scientist mage and this was the field in which he had long since established and been maintaining his position and renown as one of Earthland’s preeminent authorities, the other being cutting edge magical and scientific research. Of course, his daily life would not be complete without his true love beyond all else, namely his ongoing and ever-burgeoning mad science research, though it was considered as “mad” in the eyes of others in his acquaintance, but not by him, of course. Thus, time began to march onwards for him from then and all was relatively peaceful for some time after that, with him managing to start making some major headway in his current research projects. Alas, this period came face to face with a rather abrupt intermission, which came in the form of a couple of notifications which were sent to his iLac on this one morning.

"FOR MAD SCIENCE!! TIME TO GET EXCITED, YOU GUYS."

    Ho…ly…Hei…sen…berg…wh…o…is…it…th…is time?

He mused silently while still heavily under the influence of his currently sleep-addled state of mind. Naturally, he was currently sleep-addled because he had crashed a few days back unexpectedly after having ignored his body’s urges to sleep for several weeks on end consecutively as was the norm for him whenever he would be preoccupied with his ongoing and ever-burgeoning mad science research and the projects, experiments, studies, and so on therein. He did not want to answer, of course, but even in that sleep-addled state, his brain/mind managed to detect and register the distinctive sound of the tune he had set as the associated ringtone for all important/urgent job request notifications, namely the one called “Voices of War” which he had acquired a long time back as special DLC for his most favorite iLac game app of all time, aka “Oda Nobuna’s Ambition”.

That informed him of the importance associated with this incoming job request, so with great reluctance, he pushed himself off the linoleum tiled floor of his lab upon which he had been soundly asleep till then and blinked blearily as he fiddled with his iLac. Thankfully, due to his innately superior dexterity, he was still able to successfully unlock his iLac and read the message despite his currently sleep addled state.

    Cur…sed Lan..ds…house…with stat…ues…what is this? Th...ey…app…ear to move?

He murmured, reading the text out loud with occasional yawns punctuating his attempts at reading the job request details, all the while trying to blink the sleep out of his eyes and focus them, but to no avail. This went on for several minutes until finally, his brain and mind as well as his body had completed booting up properly. The first thing he noticed now that his mind and body were both fully awake was that the job had a substantial reward attached to it which, in turn, suggested that: 1) the clients were fairly desperate to have someone clear up the mystery mentioned in the request and 2) the job was a fair degree more complex than what he had thought at first glance, perhaps with a slew of hidden difficulties which would only become apparent after immersing himself in the resolution of this mystery.

Well, this should provide for a nice field test for some of the newer theories and projects I have been working on lately and for that new power I recently acquired from researching into the nature of the associated esoterica...and if nothing else, it should satiate my thirst for the mysterious…

With thoughts such as these whirling about in his mind, Faustein smirked briefly as he finished reading over the rest of the job request. Then, he set about readying himself for the test ahead of him, namely the investigation and attempt at resolution of the mystery inherent to this job. It took him a little while to fully prepare since his collection of artifacts, equipment, and so on had grown considerably in the last few months, but eventually, he did manage to complete this process. Finally, he dressed himself in his usual work outfit, aka that of a physician-scientist, this outfit also doubling as his specially enchanted light armor due to the magic imbued into it by the craftsman who created it for him some time back during a past Halloween season festival and strapped his various equipment pieces to his person in their usual slots after which he finished by putting on his smart holographic glasses and strapping his spacetime manipulation chronograph to his left wrist as per the final steps of his usual job prep protocol. After that, he holstered his iLac and took his military grade backpack with the rest of his field equipment and other on-the-go tools and items inside and set off to exit his lab/mansion. After that, he headed over to a private transportation company in Magnolia which he usually used due to personal acquaintance with the owner and hired transport to the Cursed Lands region, intending to save the use of his spacetime manipulation chronograph for the return trip back home.

The journey there was a lengthy one due to the sheer amount of distance between Fiore and his destination which was well outside of Fiore’s territory, so Faustein used this time to read over the job request thoroughly so that he could, as the saying went, hit the ground running upon meeting with the clients for this job. So, the next several hours passed without much incident and at last, Faustein was dropped off at the Cursed Lands region.

First, I have meet with the clients and see if I can acquire some more data about these…statues…

With that in mind, Faustein set off for the client’s residence, making sure to keep his wits about him.

It took a while for him to reach the clients’ place of residence, but he did eventually reach there. Upon arrival, a group of visibly anxious faces greeted him and after the customary niceties had been handled, Faustein was led inside and once there, he took a seat across from the clients and began

So, why not begin the story from the starting point? That way, it might be possible to arrive at an appropriate solution and the more data there is at my disposal, the more efficiently I can work to resolve your crisis for you as per your request.

Then, he fell silent and waited for the clients to begin their narrative at their pace. The leaders of the clients’ families led the discussion

Very well, as you have read in the job request notification we sent out, the task here is to either rescue our loved ones from this accursed house or at least find out what has happened to them.

Faustein nodded to show he was listening, but other than that, he remained silent and attentive to the narrative being relayed to him

This whole tragedy first began several months ago when the few years old son and daughter of one of the couples who also became the house’s victims first went to play around that house. They were warned not to enter, but you know how curious kids can be, right? Anyway, they went inside, and all had seemed fine initially, but then…a few hours later, there was naught but silence…suddenly, we found we could no longer hear their voices.

Faustein raised one eyebrow quizzically, but otherwise just silently motioned for them to continue onwards and so the clients did just that, with many of them sobbing quietly with their emotional travail being clearly visible on their faces, but since Faustein was not one who was very empathetic, he merely observed them with a blank, detached expression while listening to the others speak further

Naturally, their parents went in after them since they could not find any blood, remains, or even any sliver of evidence as to what had happened to their beloved child from the outside…only to become lost to the house themselves shortly thereafter. This pattern continued onward with the number of people disappearing growing by the year, until finally we all had enough…and so, here we are talking to you now.

Faustein nodded, and once the clients had fallen silent, he spoke up

Are any of you capable of magic to any degree?

The clients answered in the negative and resumed their narrative once more

Now then, these statues…well, they seem like statues which as you probably know should NOT be able to even twitch let alone move, but the oddest thing about them that we’ve noticed is that they have been inexplicably known to be positioned differently or even in completely different locations at some points in the day…so, what other explanation could there be?

Faustein tilted his head slightly while pondering this bit of information before responding

Well, perhaps someone among your neighbors in this area snuck in when no one else was looking and rearranged the statues’ positions and locations? Would there be any here who are of a disposition that is conducive to such ill-mannered pranks?

He asked, and as would be expected, the clients grew greatly incensed at this accusation that there could be some among them who would play such a tasteless joke upon their neighbors and stated as much aloud

Impossible!! There is not a SINGLE one among us who would do such a ridiculously tasteless thing!! How could you even suggest such a thing?!!

They demanded, their faces contorted with anger at his supposed accusation, but Faustein being socially clueless as was his norm, was not fazed in the slightest by this intense display of emotion. Instead, he calmly addressed them in a neutral voice, albeit one that was still his usual rich, baritone, but somehow melodious one

Understood, you can calm down now. Well now, this has been an enlightening conversation, indeed. The rest you can leave to me, though it would be foolish of me to make any promises at this stage, at least until I have had a chance to thoroughly investigate this matter at length.

The clients who had been fuming with anger calmed down once they heard this and then bade him farewell, pointing him in the direction of the house in question after which he arose with all his gear and headed off to the misfortune-plagued house.

Well, well…the plot thickens…this affair is becoming ever more entertaining by the minute…

Faustein mused silently as he walked towards the house, all the while keeping the other half of his attention upon his surroundings as was his usual modus operandi.

"FOR MAD SCIENCE!! TIME TO GET EXCITED, YOU GUYS."

Upon reaching the house in question, he commenced his investigation not by entering the house, but doing a full 360-degree walkaround, peering into all the available windows to glean as much information as possible and to confirm the veracity of the clients’ claims about the house’s contents and their nature. Sure enough, after doing this for a couple of hours, he did indeed see nothing and no one other than the statues littering the house all over. Then, he took some environmental samples from the area in the house’s immediate vicinity and tested these with his field investigation kit’s battery of testing methods. Alas, this was to no avail, as each of the tests came up negative despite being tried and true in their accuracy and precision every time in the past.

Negative on all counts, eh? So, either these tests are not sensitive to detect any clues to whatever is going on here or perhaps whatever IS the root cause of this phenomenon is restricted to the inside of the house and does not exert its malign influence on the outside world...How very intriguing…

Faustein mused silently further, and then attempted to touch the doorknob slowly and carefully so that he would not unwittingly set off any would-be trap mechanisms intended to stop intruders. However, nothing of the sort was detectable, so he took the risk of turning the doorknob and entering inside. Upon entering, he immediately put all his senses on red alert status so that he would be aware of everything happening and of all presences in his vicinity. However, the only thing he found was a brief note written on a small piece of paper saying ''Don't even blink. Blink and you are dead.''

What a strange warning…was this left by a previous victim? Oh well, on with the job at hand…

With that he stepped into the house fully, and unbeknownst to him, activated the seal on the door.

What in Heisenberg’s name just transpired here?

He murmured while examining the seemingly ordinary door which had somehow closed itself once he had let go of it after stepping inside the house completely. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts at trying to open it again, it remained closed, and so he decided to scan it to discover the cause of the closure. Upon doing so, he found that the door was now locked magically with a seal which, regardless of the magic seal breaking method he proceeded to use on it, remained secure, locking the door from being opened from the inside and preventing his escape. Next, he tried the windows but met with similar resistance there as well.

So the only way out now is to solve this mystery, I see…Very well then…

With that thought in mind, he set himself even more to the task at hand and proceeded further into the house, making sure to make a video recording of everything he saw inside with not only the video recording function of the camera nano-lacrima installed in his iLac, but also a similar but much more highly advanced recording device installed in his cyborg eyes. He did not find any statues along the way, but that was because the statues were deeper in, and he came to this inner region of the house eventually. Once there, the first statues to greet him were those that were akin to a stereotypical Cupid from mythological lore, aka basically a small human-shaped child with wings on the back.

Ten of them at once, eh? Well, this should suffice for the initial testing, at least.

He backed up about a 100 m away from them while making sure not to blink to not be caught off-guard by any sudden motion of the Cupid statues as per the instructions he had seen on that little note from earlier. However, despite being a true cyborg, he was still susceptible to natural human instincts, and in this case, that meant the instinct to blink occasionally. That was when he saw it for the briefest moment, that is the remarkable sight of the ten Cupid statues racing towards him at unbelievable velocities. However, once he stopped blinking, they stopped moving entirely and were looking like ordinary, immobile, and innocuous statues again.

Ah, I see now. So that was what the note meant, and I am also beginning to see the flickers of truth behind the mystery of the place-changing statues in this house as described by clients. How very intriguing, indeed…Perhaps I should carry one of these back to my lab for further testing…

However, that was all the time he had to ponder the issue for an errant gust of wind that came through the open window in the room across the hall now wafted by him, irritating his eyes, and causing them to blink their eyelids again despite his best efforts not to do so. And just like that, the ten Cupid statues came alive once more and began swarming towards him just as swiftly as they had before. This time, however, they were within striking range, so Faustein aimed a simple non-magical melee attack consisting of couple of swift punches toward one of the ten that was closest to him. Fortunately, his one-two punch attack was enough to shatter said Cupid statue immediately upon contact and a split second after that, he aimed another simple non-magical melee attack consisting of couple of swift kicks at another of the ten Cupid statues, destroying it upon impact as well.

Well this is promising to see…it seems that at least these statues are not that durable…Now then, on to the rest…

Musing thus silently and since his blinking reflex had stopped for the time being, he took a break.

However, that break did not last exceptionally long, for the other eight Cupid statues were still coming at him at high speeds. So, Faustein refocused his attention on them while standing at the ready to fight once more.

It would probably be smart to save that new power of mine for a while yet…

Thinking thus silently, he waited till they were within striking range and then repeated the same thing he did before, that is, aiming a couple of swift punches at one of the eight Cupid statues followed by a couple of kicks at another of the eight. This time, though, his initial strikes were dodged due to the sheer momentum of the targeted statues. He frowned as he saw this, but kept going, targeting the same statues again and this time, he succeeded in destroying the two in question. However, as he was too busy to watch his back while doing this, his magic sensory did not inform him about what transpired next…that is, him being grabbed by one of the other of the now six remaining Cupid statues. That was when he realized there was more strangeness to these statues than he had realized upon initial contact and analysis.

    Wh…at…is…go…ing on? I…fe…el…so…strange…

That was all he managed to think as his mind was briefly destabilized and overwhelmed from the mere touch of the Cupid statue in question. Regardless, despite the lagging of his conscious mind at this time, his body still reacted on instinct to the enemy, and he leaped away from the group of statues, landing on the other side about 50 m away from them with his back turned to them as before. In response, the six remaining Cupid statues turned around and charged at him again with that same remarkable swiftness they had shown before.

So…these statues seem to have some mind-affecting secret ability…my, they grow more fascinating by the minute…this makes me want to carry them off to my lab for further research even more now.

Faustein smirked while musing thus briefly and then refocused himself on the impending battle once more as he had the two previous times. When they came within reach while making their noises which sounded like those of little children laughing and/or crying just like the first two times, he proceeded to smash another two of the remaining six Cupid statues with simple melee attacks like he did before with his back turned to them to ensure they kept moving to keep them vulnerable and detecting as well as attacking them using his magic sensory alone instead of his eyes for guiding his attacks. This was because his plan was to save his magic for any stronger enemies which may be lurking deeper within the house, unbeknownst to him at present.

Only four left now…but this is most definitely tiresome work…I should probably leave these types of enemies to my minions once I acquire them in any future jobs of this kind…

He muttered to himself while panting slightly due to the slight strain this high physical effort it took to keep using his melee attacks as he was not a frontline fighter by any stretch of the imagination. His melee strength was artificial after all, coming from his magically themed physical enhancements that he had made to his body instead of through true physical prowess gained through many years of rigorous, steady physical conditioning. So, he took a break to catch his breath and regain some of his physical energy while keeping his physical eyes on them to keep them from moving in on him during this break.

It took him several minutes to do so, but Faustein finally recovered enough of his stamina to resume the job at hand.

Alright, time to finish this wave once and for all…

Musing thus silently, Faustein closed his eyes and focused on his magic sensory as well as his non-visual senses to track the Cupid statues. In response, the Cupid statues came to life again and raced towards him while uttering their ear-splitting, child-like cries and since there were four of them, it was quite deafening to hear, especially for Faustein since he was focusing his hearing on them among his other senses as well. However, despite the strain this placed on his hypersensitive ears, he soldiered onwards and kept his focus on the incoming Cupid statues and once they were within range, he lashed out as before, striking with a couple of punches followed by a couple of kicks. Like they had in the immediately previous encounter, his punches missed their targets, albeit just barely as he felt his skin graze the stony surface of the Cupid statues closest to him. In contrast, his kicks were apparently on point since he not only felt them connect with another of the Cupid statues, but also smash right through it in short order. That said, he was again grabbed, this time by the Cupid statue he missed destroying and once again, he felt that same stupor-inducing mental confusion set in for a couple of minutes like it had before. However, he shook it off with an exertion of will and used this chance to first kick the Cupid statue grabbing at him into the air and then roundhouse kick it towards the far wall, smashing it to pieces almost immediately due to the increased force of the consequent impact.

There, now there are only tw…

He was about to say when he noticed something even stranger and that was the sight of all the Cupid statues which he had broken thus far starting to reassemble themselves slowly but steadily until each one was whole again. However, as he observed them more closely, he noticed that the very first ones he had broken were the first to reform while those that he had broken in the subsequent rounds of combat took a little longer with the one he just destroyed by smashing it into the wall taking the longest to reform completely.

What in Heisenberg’s name…is this? So, these statues…not only have the power to sap mental energy but can…also reform? Egads! Now that is a truly troublesome group of foes for me to face alone…Does that mean I have to destroy them multiple times for them to stay destroyed? That bears further investigation…

Faustein mused thus silently with his thin cyanotic lips contorted into a noticeable frown and let out a sigh of exasperation as he realized that he would have to redouble his efforts at destroying the statues, but also because the prospect of all the other statues that he had caught glimpses of during his initial analysis also having these same two powers as these Cupid statues. After that moment of lamenting, he brought his focus back to the task at hand, namely the process of destroying the Cupid statues all over again.

Perhaps, this would be a good time to test that new power of mine…

He pondered briefly before deciding on deploying a certain exotic ability he had gained recently through his research into one rather mysterious lineage the bearers of which had been said to be death bringers.

"FOR MAD SCIENCE!! TIME TO GET EXCITED, YOU GUYS."

With that thought in mind, Faustein focused his mind on the power he was intending to use, that of the death bringers of yore which he had been granted due to his research into their origins, ideology, abilities, and so on. It took a few minutes to do so since this was its major debut since he acquired it some time back, but he eventually managed to cast the power, or rather one of them, the one he felt was appropriate for such a large group of enemies. To do so, he had to utter a single word

    Mortem.

With that, the killing intent born from the new power that resided in him was unleashed, growing steadily in degree of intensity until it radiated outwards from his body in the form of a visible dark wave of pure destruction and death. Then he watched as the death wave rushed towards the incoming Cupid statues and upon impact, successfully destroyed all ten of them in one fell swoop, astounding even him as he did not expect statues to be affected by its power due to their inorganic nature.

How very intriguing…this power…it was certainly worth sacrificing all those consecutive weeks of sleep and sustenance to complete that research project…this one I just used would be extraordinarily useful for taking care of larger groups of foes like this bunch of statues simultaneously…so far so good, the field test of this power is going well, indeed.

Faustein muttered with a smirk as he examined the destroyed Cupid statues briefly while contemplating the destruction caused by the ability which he had just deployed against them. After that, he finished his examination and then headed further into the house, keeping all his senses on full alert for any sign of the missing people he had been hired to find out about by his current clients. However, despite searching high and low for any sign of them and going over all areas of the house he came across as he moved further in with the proverbial fine-toothed comb, he could find neither hide nor hair of the supposed victims of this mysterious house.

Strange…does this mean the clients were telling the truth about their missing kith and kin? Despite my best efforts thus far, I have not found even a single clue as to their whereabouts…Then again, perhaps they may be in the deepest recesses of this strange house and the searchers simply had not looked far enough? Well, that is assuming of course the clients were telling me the whole truth…

Faustein frowned while musing thus silently after his search for the missing victims came up empty once again. After persevering a little further, though he did not find any clues about the fate of the alleged victims, what he did find was another group of statues scattered about a long hallway which was set perpendicular to the one he had just come out of moments before. Each statue was next to a half-wrecked door with there being ten in total along the entire length of the hallway. This set of statues were those that resembled weeping angels. Each one had its face covered with one hand with the other hanging by the side. Furthermore, each one of these weeping angel statues was gray-colored and each had wings on its back, while the hands of each also possessed long witch-like claws and finally, each of the statues had razor-sharp teeth in its mouth. Of course, like with the Cupid statues, these were also made of stone from what Faustein could gather whilst examining each one thoroughly.

These are supposed to be angels? Holy Heisenberg! These are some of the most grotesque ones I have ever seen in all my adventures put together…so much that it makes me wonder who or what created them…

"FOR MAD SCIENCE!! TIME TO GET EXCITED, YOU GUYS."

Several moments later, Faustein finished up his examination of the Weeping Angel statues and started to explore each of the ten rooms connected to the hallway by entering each one in turn, but as soon as his back was turned to the Weeping Angel statues after entering the rooms, said statues began to come to life and entered the room after him.

So these can move as well and like those Cupid statues, these will also only do so when I am not directing watching them, eh? This is starting to look like something right out of the famous ‘Schrodinger’s Cat’ thought experiment…how irksome…

However, he did not have time to dwell on the matter any further as the Weeping Angel statues had closed in on him and were now within striking range. So, he went to work again, employing the same attack pattern from before to test their durability, movement speed, reaction, and so on. To this end, he targeted the closest of the three Weeping Angel Statues that had followed him inside with two punches followed by two kicks. To his surprise, the statue was not destroyed after the two punches struck it cleanly but did crumble to pieces upon getting hit with the first of his two kicks.

Ah, so each of these is a little more durable than its Cupid predecessor, eh? This is certainly going to be tedious…

Grumbling silently thus, he made to attack the other two Weeping Angel statues, but they had crept up too close by that time and due to that, both were able to ensnare him in their stony clutches. As a result, Faustein was hit with a wave of temporarily debilitating mental confusion as he had before with the Cupid statues, but to a greater extent than before as he could feel more of his mental energy being sapped away this time per touch. This, in turn, caused his mind to go reeling and then he collapsed onto one knee and he felt himself panting as though he had run several kilometers at a stretch as the mental fatigue had built up to the point that it even started to seep into his body to a slight extent.

    I…be…tt…er…fin…ish…the…se ones…off quickly…other…wise…I will surely be…neck deep…in trouble before…too long…

That was all he could manage with the fog of confusion blanketing his mind, but fortunately, this managed to pass, although only after several moments had come and gone for him. Once he felt his mind fully adapt to the lack of mental energy, he made his counterattack, first by bringing his arms which were currently in the grasp of those of the Weeping Angels together in front of him without warning and with as much force and speed as he could muster in that weakened state. The suddenness of his movement had its intended effect when combined with the force and speed at which he enacted it, with the result that the two statues smashed into each other with a loud thud followed by a cracking noise from each one. Additionally, this counterattack of his also managed to free him from their clutches at which point, he wasted no further time in trying to deploy the same “Mortem” ability from his newly acquired “Bringer of Death” power. However, to his dismay and surprise, it failed to work this time, so he tried it again followed by several more attempts, but to no avail

Is this just a once in a blue moon usage then? Well, I suppose that is to be expected considering how powerful and incredibly useful it is in practice…which in turn means that I will have to be quite a bit more careful about when, where, and upon whom or what I deploy this power to conserve it…

"FOR MAD SCIENCE!! TIME TO GET EXCITED, YOU GUYS."

Sighing at the fact that he already used up the quota of his new “Bringer of Death” power, Faustein readied himself for attacking the angel statues once more, deciding to employ the same tactic as before, straightforward melee attacks to conserve his mana for any potentially stronger enemies he may end up meeting later once he went further inside the house. This time, however, he took a basic martial arts stance with his left foot forward and his right foot positioned behind in what was commonly called the “triangle stance” while having left hand extended towards the angel statues and his right hand at his hip. A split second later, he crouched slightly, putting his weight on his posteriorly positioned right leg before using the built up tension to spring forward at his top speed and aimed three kicks at one of the two angel statues which had captured him previously, destroying it immediately, and immediately spun around on his heel, using the momentum to strike the other angel statue which had captured him before with a “C-punch” maneuver in which he launched one punch at eye level and another punch at waist level simultaneously. Consequently, the angel statue was caught off guard and was destroyed as well due to being immobilized because he had it within his physical visual field once more.

That takes care of another couple of those angel statues, now for the rest of them…at least they are giving me a nice workout so far…I may be a geeky researcher at heart but even I need some modicum of physical exercise now and then.

Smirking while muttering to himself in this manner, Faustein headed out of the room, leaving the destroyed remains of the three Weeping Angel statues inside and then proceeded down the hall, seemingly unaware of the angel statues, but the truth was that he was focusing all his magic sensory capacity upon them in the form of a field so that when their forms disrupted said field, he would know that they were close enough to strike back. In response to him turning his back on them, the rest of the seven Weeping Angel statues came to life and surged forth toward him to attack him

Right on cue, it is heartening to see that I am finally beginning to adapt to their patterns and behavior…Now then…

He whirled around on his heel while unleashing the first spell he used thus far, this one being his “Bone Katana: Camelia Dance”. In this, he slammed his hand on his thigh while funneling his mana into his femur therein. In response, a copy of his femur pushed itself up through the superior surface of his thigh and passed through his physician-scientist’s outfit which was serving as his armor and materialized into his hand while forming itself into the shape and size of a standard-length katana in mere moments. He then launched himself at the seven Weeping Angel statues coming at him and enacted his attack spell which consisted of a consecutive flurry of ten swift jabbing attacks made with his bone katana. Thanks to the innately higher damage potential of his spell, both due to its high level and due to the damage potential enhancement it received from his enhanced mana quality, this one spell alone was enough to destroy all seven of the Weeping Angel statues almost simultaneously, causing them to crumble to pieces at his feet, with the dust from the destruction flying all over the hallway. At that point, Faustein decided to use the dust screen as a cover to head further into the house lest the Cupid statues come after him after their reformation which he figured was completed by then.

It took a while but Faustein was finally able to leave the long hallway with the Weeping Angel statues in it after having examined all the rooms therein

Still no sign of the missing victims anywhere, perhaps they are even further still inside this house…

Faustein thought, pondering the issue of the people he had been hired to find by the job’s clients this time around. He pushed ahead ever further into the house and eventually came across a large chamber with even more doors, two on one of the walls and one on each of the rest, which led to more rooms presumably. Furthermore, he also noticed what seemed like five statues of famous mages from all over Earthland. About half of them looked incredibly ancient and were of those mages whom Faustein had read about in the history books as a student as having died ages ago, but the rest were instead of the current era's most renowned wizards and witches, with the alignment of the models being of both the legal and the dark variety.

What is…this place? A museum perhaps? Or maybe a shrine to those mages of world class renown from the days of yore? Perhaps whoever or whatever created these statues was an entity that was concerned with preserving and honoring those with legendary accomplishments from the past?

Faustein murmured to himself while examining each statue in detail with an awestruck look on his face as he had only ever read about these mages in the history books during his student days a long time ago. Naturally, since he was keeping his eyes trained on the five statues, he was examining, they did not move in the slightest, but just seemed like ordinary statues.

If the same pattern from before holds up now with these five statues as well, the minute I stop looking directly at them, they should start moving and chasing me just as it happened with the Cupid statues and the Weeping Angel statues from before…

Musing thus silently, Faustein continued his study of the statues, but try as he might, he was not able to find any sort of labels to give him more information about the mage statues. So, he finished up his study and tried the same tactic from before that he did with the Weeping Angel statues, namely going into one of the rooms but leaving the door ajar to give the impression of carelessness on his part. Just like he did before, he made sure to have his back turned to the door and his eyes shut completely. Sure enough, moments later, his keen ears picked up the sounds of all five mage statues coming to life and then heard all their heavy stony footsteps coming closer and closer until he heard all the said footsteps reverberating inside the room he was currently in, while his magic sensory picked up their presences as well.

    And now for the trick…

He waited until they were within reach and just when he heard the swish of air from their stony upper limbs coming to grab at him, he activated his second spell thus far, namely his “Xénosómectomy” spell, which was the one that conferred on him the temporary power to teleport himself or some other target to and from any point at will. In this case, he used it to teleport himself out of the room he was in with the five mage statues and back into the large chamber outside after which he locked the door tightly to prevent the statues from leaving by trapping them inside that room.

Now then, to see what their response will be like to this maneuver…

Faustein murmured as he checked the door lock and then leaped away some 30 m, albeit still landing in a position wherein he was facing the door he had just locked moments before. To his surprise, as he looked on, there were loud banging noises on the door at first and then on the sections of the walls on each side of the door. A split second later, one mage statue came out by smashing right through the door, another two came out by smashing into and then through the thick wall on one side of the door, and finally the remaining three did the same with the wall on the other side of the door. Thus, all five mage statues were back out of the room and in the chamber now, but once they came inside, since Faustein had trained his eyes on them again, they stopped moving altogether and became regular statues once more.

These things have enough force and speed to smash right through walls and doors with this much ease? Holy Heisenberg, now that is truly what they call ‘overkill’…

Faustein mused thus silently with a bead of cold sweat running down his right temple and retreated further away from them while his mind raced to see what he could do to subdue them while avoiding their potentially lethal, mind-draining touch. Thankfully, since it had been firing on all six cylinders till now, it did not take exceptionally long for him to come up with a viable strategy to defeat them, though he was sure that they too had the same regeneration ability as the other two types of statues he had encountered thus far due to the pattern which he had noticed in said statues till now. However, there was something else too, a significant difference between the statues that he discovered while contemplating his counterattack strategy

The Weeping Angel statues seem to be taking longer to reform than those Cupid statues I destroyed when I first arrived here and began this job…I suppose it is to be expected, they were more powerful than their Cupid predecessors, after all…now to see how long it takes these Mage statues to do the same…the easiest way to destroying these would be to use my ‘Bone Katana’ and my ‘Xénosómectomy’ spell in tandem…

With that thought in mind, he enacted the plan he came up with, which was decidedly much simpler than were his usual machinations and ploys. He first activated his “Xénosómectomy” spell to allow himself more freedom of movement via teleportation and at the same time, he activated his “Bone Katana: Camelia Dance” spell which conjured forth his osseous single edged curved sword once more for him to use at will. Then, he used both in tandem to rush at the statues in the blink of an eye and attack them in a chaotic, blindingly fast flurry of thrusting attacks with his bone katana after taking the appropriate stance before enacting this maneuver. Consequently, he was able to cut down two of the five Mage statues, but the other three remained standing after the dust finally settled on the scene.

Naturally, since they were statues of famous mages, Faustein observed them keenly through the dust screen to see whether they were capable of magic like their sources, but fortunately for him, they were not capable of casting any magic.

Well now, so these are only physical likenesses of those mages, eh? Good to know…albeit a real shame…it would have been a most fortuitous lesson for me to learn from all these great masters of the days of yore…Oh well…

Faustein sighed dejectedly while musing thus silently as he realized what he was missing out on due to the replica Mage statues not being able to cast their original’s magic arts. However, that moment of closing his eyes was more than enough for the remaining three Mage statues to come alive, rush at him, and then ensnare him within their clutches successfully. Of course, when they did latch onto him like that, Faustein felt the same powerful disorientation ability assault his mind once more, but in far stronger a form than any he had felt before from the Cupid statues or the Weeping Angel statues. In fact, the mind-draining touches from the remaining three Mage statues nearly knocked him out and it took him all the force he could muster with his iron will just to stay conscious, but this effort caused him to collapse onto his knees for a brief while as he sought to clear the heavy fog of confusion that hung over his mindscape.

    M…u…st…foc…us…cur…ses…alm…ost…

If that were not enough trouble already, the Cupid statues from earlier had finally managed to track him down and all ten of them rushed at him as he lay there on his knees with one Mage statue holding one of his arms in an iron grip and the other two holding his other arm in a similar iron grip. Due to his mind being hazy right then, his eyes were closed almost completely, but even that was enough to cause the Cupid statues to remain “alive”. So, all ten of the Cupid statues struck at him in turn and due to that, he was completely knocked out due to the mind draining effect of their touches which was a power that all the statues seemed to share aside from their reformation ability. Thus, Faustein was not conscious for the remarkable event that followed his collapse into a temporarily unconscious state. Several hours later, Faustein awoke once more and glanced around to examine his surroundings which did not look like the house at all

Where…am…I? The last thing I remember is being attacked and captured by all those statues…

He wondered silently while examining his new surroundings, but all he could see was a swirling blackish-gray void all around him. Additionally, he also noticed that his mental confusion was gone for some reason and that he could think clearly

Did the effect of their mind-draining touches wear off, perhaps? How curious, indeed…Now to arise and investigate this place…

He mused silently thus while forcing his body to arise from its spread-eagle knocked out position that it was in before. Once he managed to rise again, Faustein proceeded ahead with his plan for investigating the void-like area he found himself in at present

Seems like…a parallel dimension of some sort…now then, to see if I can find any clues to the missing people…

He murmured to himself while investigating every inch of his new surroundings, and unlike the last few rounds of investigations, this time, his search bore fruit, though of the macabre kind since all he managed to find were their skeletons in varying states of disrepair and with varying extents of damage on them, the latter seemingly caused by something of enormous size.

Well, that is mission accomplished, I suppose…though the clients certainly will not be happy, but then…that is none of my concern for all they hired me to do was investigate the cause of their disappearance, not to retrieve the remains…

Faustein mused silently thus while shrugging a little as he examined the bones of the deceased lying about the area.

It took him a few hours to finish the forensic examination of the remains and to match them to the victims’ data given to him by the clients prior to beginning the job, but eventually Faustein managed to finish and after doing so he moved on to investigating the hidden dimension further. Unfortunately for him, shortly after resuming his investigation of the hidden dimension, he heard and felt the approach of heavy footsteps rapidly coming towards him

Judging by the strength of the vibrations…the decibel level of the footsteps sounds…and the approach velocity…this incoming enemy is about 60 feet tall and made of some sort of stone or rock-like material, how troublesome…

Faustein pondered the incoming source of the sounds he was now hearing and the vibrations he was feeling briefly and tried to glean whatever data he could from said sounds and vibrations. However, he did not have too much time to finish because before too long his keen eyes detected the sight of the newest enemy, one that was about 60 feet tall as he had anticipated, making it the biggest statue he had faced thus far. This giant statue resembled a corpulent and rather grotesque ogre with a crown on its head and upon seeing it, Faustein immediately went into battle mode again, deciding to follow his usual methodology of staying out of range as far as possible, but alas, the ogre statue’s reach was far too long as it managed to land a solid hit on him by performing a low-sweeping swat with one of its upper limbs. The sheer force and speed sent Faustein flying and caused him to smash up against the far side of the dimension some 60 m away from the ogre statue, inflicting heavy damage on him with that single blow alone.

Egads! Despite my superhuman…movement speed, this statue is far…too enormous…and what a reach it has…managing to catch me…I will have to be…careful with this one…

He grumbled to himself in between bouts of coughing wherein he spat up some blood each time due to the internal hemorrhage caused by the physical trauma afflicted on him by the combination of the ogre statue’s hand slamming into him and the subsequently collision with the far side barrier of the statue’s dimensional lair. As if that were not bad enough, the force of the attack also destroyed his physician-scientist’s outfit which served as his light armor suit, rendering it unusable for the remainder of this encounter, a fact that incensed him greatly

HOW DARE YOU DESTROY MY OUTFIT, YOU REALLY ARE AN INSUFFERABLE PIECE OF TRASH!!! THIS HAS SEALED YOUR FATE HENCEFORTH!!!

Faustein raged thus briefly against the ogre statue with his normally detached looking face now horribly contorted with insatiable fury despite being fully aware that, as a statue, it could not comprehend him and the reason, of course, was the high degree of pride he had in his physician-scientist’s outfit which served as the symbol of all the effort and years of his immortal life he had invested into his profession.

After that brief tirade, he focused his mind on the task at hand, namely the total annihilation of the ogre statue for the sin it had committed by destroying his beloved physician-scientist’s outfit. With that in mind, he broke into a headlong sprint toward the ogre statue and then used his teleportation spell, aka “Xénosómectomy”, to close the rest of the 30 m odd gap that remained and simultaneously summoned forth his bone katana by using his “Bone Katana: Camelia Dance” spell and went in for his counterstrike against the ogre statue, wherein he repeatedly stabbed and slashed at said statue up to a maximum of 10 times, doing so rapidly enough to create the appearance of afterimages. Each stab he performed was directed at a slightly different part of the ogre statue, from a slightly different angle, and with slightly different regularity, making it difficult for it to predict each of these strikes. To his surprise, however, the ogre statue was able to dodge Faustein's attacks for a time, but eventually, it became unable to keep up with the constant and "chaotic" strikes that Faustein was unleashing upon it, giving Faustein the opening he needed to inflict massive damage upon it.

"FOR MAD SCIENCE!! TIME TO GET EXCITED, YOU GUYS."

In response, the now heavily cracked and pockmarked ogre statue backed away from Faustein while roaring in anguish, and those cries called forth its underlings; aka the ten Cupid statues, the ten Weeping Angel statues, and the five Mage statues to its side at which point some of them formed a defensive phalanx both in front of and behind it, clearly to protect it from Faustein’s future assaults. The rest rushed toward Faustein in a small horde to attack him. Upon seeing this, Faustein only grew more incensed at their efforts to prevent him from completing his objective of destroying the ogre statue

GET OUT OF MY WAY, YOU ACCURSED VERMIN!!!

He roared at them while charging towards them as well while activating a slew of spells in preparation for the impending combat round. First, he cast a defensive spell upon himself, this one being his “Integumentary Enhancement – Adamantine Skin” spell. Faustein executed this spell by first channeling his mana into each component that comprised his body’s integumentary system, aka skin,  covering his entire body from head to toe. He then used this mana to alter the characteristics of these components to hyper-proliferate as well as hyperactivate the fibroblasts which were responsible for synthesizing and secreting the collagen and related proteins that gave his skin its normal level of endurance. By doing so, he temporarily enhanced the durability of his skin till it was as hard or harder than diamond (i.e., till it becomes adamantine in nature). This now caused his skin to act as living armor to ward off attacks, whether physical or magical, that would be coming at him from the attacking statues for the duration of this spell or until its durability ran out, whichever came first. As a side effect, this spell caused his skin to acquire a metallic purple sheen to it.

Then, he activated his next spell which was his “Mystic Eye – Diagnoscope” spell by channeling some of his mana into the magic energy networks connected to his eyes. As per usual, this mana then formed itself into a pair of targeting reticules, one in each eye. Faustein then aimed this enhanced sight at the incoming statues to glean various data about them, most important of these being their weak points, this data appearing inside the targeting reticules as they would in a regular, holographic HUD. Thus, he enhanced the offensive potential of the spells he was about to use on the statues which he did in the next moment. The first of the attack spells he used was his “Defibrillator Palm” which he performed by channeling his mana into the palm of each hand and after concentrating it there, he altered his mana’s elemental affinity to that of electricity, causing each palm to flash and spark with the effulgence of the electrical voltage and current output of a standard defibrillator found in any hospital.

Then, he rushed at the incoming ten Cupid statues while spinning rapidly before attacking them with a flurry of open palm strikes and by the end of this brief encounter, he was able to destroy three of these ten statues. He did not stop there, of course, but rather immediately whirled around and activated his next attack spell which was his “Plasma Scalpel”. He performed this one by channeling his mana into each of his hands and using it to generate and concentrate plasma from the air onto each hand. Then, he controlled his mana to shape this gathered plasma into a small, sharp blade-shaped coat, one on each hand. After that, he rushed at the remaining seven Cupid statues and used these plasma scalpels to attack them, destroying them swiftly, one after the other thanks to the attack boost granted to him by his “Diagnoscope” spell.

"FOR MAD SCIENCE!! TIME TO GET EXCITED, YOU GUYS."

Faustein’s assault did not stop but only increased in ferocity from there since he activated the next few attack spells in his planned sequence, the first of these being his “Hundred Healings Seal: Release – Cherry Blossom Impact” spell. Faustein did this one by releasing the mana reservoir seal imprinted on the center of his forehead, at which time, extension markings rooted in the seal began to spread across his face and wrapped around his entire body. Then, he gathered a dense concentration of this released mana in one of his fists momentarily before releasing it afterwards all at once in an intensely concentrated, point-blank burst upon contact with the “floor” of the ogre statue’s dimensional lair. The resulting damage was enough to seriously fracture the surface in question in a striking manner and this sent up small, cherry blossom petal-sized and shaped particles of decimated surface into the air all around the area of the impact while leaving a giant crater within the max range of the spell, which was what gave the spell its name. The massive shockwaves generated by this spell collided with the ten Weeping Angel statues with a violent explosive sound which was followed by that of the statues cracking and finally crumbling away, and thus Faustein managed to destroy all ten of the Weeping Angel statues simultaneously.

    And then there were six…

Faustein muttered with a cruel smirk playing on his thin cyanotic lips while examining his handiwork and taking a short break, and as he took this break, he made sure that he was keeping his eyes firmly trained upon the remaining enemies, namely the five Mage statues and of course, the big boss who was the ogre statue.

How should I bring this battle to a close, I wonder? Perhaps my ‘Bone Katana – Camelia Dance’ spell should be saved for the ogre statue…which would leave…the ‘Dead Soul Recall’ spell…and perhaps after that…yes, that should work to bring this play to its finale…

With that thought in mind, Faustein went on to begin casting his “Dead Soul Recall” spell. To execute this spell, Faustein focused and channeled his mana into the “ground” of the hidden dimension to raise a small group of corpses upon which he quickly performed psychic surgery to temporarily make each of their hearts beat again. He then activated the portion of his mana that he had sent to become resident within each corpse to both control the specific body's movements and to hide all signs of the surgery, creating the appearance that the bodies were living people whereas they were simply a group of dead bodies being automatically moved by his mana which he has poured into them prior to activation. He even took the extra step of erasing the body odor of the corpses so that the statues would not notice the bodies’ decadent scents.
Normally, he would have made them look like him, but in this case, there was no real need to do that since he realized it would not have any effect on the statues as they were merely golems and not actual living entities. After these preparations were done, he sent this small horde of conjured zombies to attack the five Mage statues and quickly destroyed them as well, leaving only the ogre statue remaining. Alas, the zombies were not powerful enough to take on the ogre statue for it had proceeded to wipe them all out with a pair of energy beams that it shot at them from its eyes.

It not only has great physical strength, but also can shoot laser beams from its eyes? Just how many abilities does this boss statue have? This is quickly becoming irksome…

Faustein grumbled thus with his thin cyanotic lips twisted downward into a scowl but ultimately, he resigned himself to these facts and simply refocused his attention on the matter at hand, namely the fact that he would have to put in extra effort if he wanted to be able to destroy the ogre statue completely. To that end, he conjured his bone katana again and then went into the beginning stance for his “Bone Katana: Camelia Dance” spell. A split second later, he activated his teleport spell, aka his “Xénosómectomy” spell to teleport himself at the ogre statue and ran up its titanic frame and performed the series of blindingly swift stabbing attacks with his bone katana at it. This new damage combined with the heavy damage that he had already dealt to it before was enough to destroy it once and for all after which the rest of the statues and the hidden dimension disappeared along with the ogre statue as it faded away to nothing, depositing Faustein back in the house which no longer had that foreboding aura he had felt when he first entered it.

Well, that was annoying, but at least it is finished now…

Faustein mused silently while sighing exasperatedly before heading off through the front door to the house after breaking the seal on it. Then, he headed over to the clients, informed them about the fate of their kith and kin as per the terms of the job contract, causing them all to break down into tears for several hours on end. However, since the job paid well, Faustein put up with the bawling and after the waterworks had run their due course, the leaders of the families who had regained their composure rewarded him handsomely at which point, Faustein stowed the money bag away in his backpack and then activated his spacetime manipulation chronograph and promptly disappeared from sight, being teleported back to his mansion in Magnolia Town where he was looking forward to a nice, long rest till the next job and/or adventure.

(FAUSTEIN’S EXIT, JOB OFFICIALLY ENDED AT THIS POINT)
