Light Guild: Orion Fractal
The whole idea of this guild lies in its name. Orion, the Hunter, is a well-known constellation in the skies of Earthland. Borrowing their name from this celestial figure, this guild is primarily venatorial in purpose. Their primary aim is to seek out and wage war against the forces of evil, hunting the darkness where, and how, they can. According to mathematical Chaos Theory, the graphs of most chaotic processes are fractals. Despite the apparent randomness of chaotic processes, they give rise to things as beautiful as fractals, if directed by ordered processes. The symbolism here reflects the second philosophy of this guild: its willingness to take on the rejects of society, and those who may be seen as potential agents of chaos: the overlooked, the shunned, and those the world is frightened of, and give them a home and a chance to belong to a family, and make the world at large acknowledge them, if they will accept to live by the tenets of the guild. Then through rehabilitation programs and facilities, and the support system this guild provides for its members by serving as a family and home for them, the guild shapes its members into people that society can not only trust, in spite of their sketchy pasts and conditions, but even look up to, admire, and depend on. The guild believes in compassion and second chances, but only to the penitent. While some are wary about this guild, it seems to be doing a lot of good for Fiore, as it channels potentials to serve the people of Earthland, which would otherwise have been seduced to join the forces of evil. The doors of this guild are open to all who walk the path of Light, but is especially welcoming to those who wish to truly avoid, or leave, the way of evil, and those who desire to help them do so.
Orion Fractal is a legal guild because of its two core goals. They are:
1. Rooting out, and eradication of evil in Earthland. While their major focus is on supernatural threats, they will not overlook humans who are undoubtedly evil. This is the guild’s primary goal. To this end, they gather information on evils, mostly supernatural, research tools and methods to hunt said evils, and then, being armed with knowledge and resources, hunt the evil with scientific efficiency. They are also versed in combat the residual effects of evil entities like curses, possession, etc.
2. Rehabilitation and integration of those shunned by society, and those who genuinely wish to atone for past sins. Seeing as evil creates hardship, and some turn to evil to avoid said hardships, this guild tries to help those whose hearts are good, but are sorely tempted by evil, to escape the lure, by giving them a livelihood. This serves a two-pronged purpose: firstly, it increases the base of allies on the side of good, and secondly, it reduces the available human resources for evil.
It should be noted that Orion Fractal, while struggling for the good of humanity in general, cares little for politics and governments. Members of this guild will not break rules just for the fun of it, though; they recognize that rules are for the smooth running of society, and smooth running means stability, and stability means security. However, they will break rules that they perceive to be oppressive if breaking said rules will further their cause, because their allegiance is to the common people, not to governments which front as handholds for tyrants. Orion Fractal seeks to build a strong moral compass in all its guild members, and these are the core tenets the guild works with:
1. Be altruistic. You are here to serve. Selflessness is the highest virtue.
2. Be compassionate. Human life is sacred. Killing may be necessary, but should never be abused, nor enjoyed.
3. Be gracious. Do not discriminate. If you cannot empathize, understand.
4. Be wise. Think well, then act. Always do your research before drawing conclusions.
5. Be loyal. Trust and support your family. All members of the guild need one another to survive.
6. Be just. Defend the rights of the downtrodden and oppose evil. If you cannot do it openly, do it discretely.
7. Be resolute. Trust what you have learned in the light. Do not waver when you act.
With these seven rules guiding the guild towards its two purposes, Orion Fractal encourages its members to always strive for mastery in all their fields of endeavor. How can one be just or resolute if they do not have the requisite strength to fuel their ideals? Everyone is expected to personally improve themselves daily, and stronger members are actively encouraged to help those below them to get stronger. Resources are placed into making information readily available to its guild members, so that members of Orion Fractal would always be well-informed, and thus mentally equipped to make the best decisions. As such, Orion Fractal appears almost obsessed with knowledge acquisition and utilization. Guild quests often involve identifying and gathering knowledge about sources of evil, eradicating said evil, defending people and property, cleansing people and properties from evil effects, performing research on development of techniques and methods of offense or defense against evil, and proving the efficacy of said research in practical terms.
How does Orion Fractal serve the people of Fiore? By taking missions, which almost always involve helping people and defending them against darkness. Also, they maintain “the Sanctuary”, their guild hall, where those needing a fresh start can be equipped to atone for past mistakes, and where those who seek refuge may find it. This guild is not stupid, though. They have almost infallible ways of determining if someone is just trying to escape the law, or really needs rehabilitation. In the case of the former, such people are captured and turned over to the authorities. For the latter, they are persuaded to give themselves up, if they have broken the law, but the guild will attempt to follow such persons up, support them, and help however they can. Finally, the name 'Orion' gives a strong hint of their last purpose: hunting. A pivotal function of the guild is to hunt hostile supernatural entities that would jeopardize the safety of the nation, as well as cleanse the residual effects of said entities on people and objects and places. Guild hunting missions may branch out to hunt and take down human threats as well, but they mostly focus on supernatural enemies and their human allies. To this end, the guild seeks to acquire knowledge and methods that will aid them in their war against the creatures of darkness. The guild is organized into four “Houses”, named after the four elements: The House of Earth serves to defend the guild, and the populace, from threats; the House of Air gathers and manages information and resources to aid the guild's objectives, said resources being libraries and armories, among other things; the House of Fire actively hunts evil where it may be found; the House of Water oversees the runnings of the Sanctuary, and supports the other Houses’ activities. Members of the guild are assumed to belong to all houses, and may partake of any House activity as they so desire, though each house is directed by a Guild Ace.
What separates Orion Fractal from the other active legal guilds is that Sabertooth is a shield, defending against extraplanar threats, while the Rune Knights are the police force of Fiore, under the dictates of the Magic Council. Orion Fractal is a spear, seeking to turn the battle against evil to offensive. Rather than wait for evil to strike, or adjudicate within government-defined boundaries, they assail evil before it can entrench and grow stronger, wherever and whenever they can, without answering to any government, though they are wise enough not to break rules unnecessarily. This lack of affinity to any government makes some believe them to be unruly and unbridled, and thus dangerous. But it is almost impossible to gainsay the fact that places where Orion Fractal operates, or has operated, are much safer than they would have been, and the common people seem to be glad for that. As such, the Magic Council of Fiore has allowed Orion Fractal to be named a light guild, but they attempt to keep a steadfast watch on the activities and dealings of the guild.
Guild hierarchy is as follows: the Guild Master is called the Seneschal, and is responsible for providing leadership and direction.
Next in line are the Aces, called Magisters, who are each in charge of one of the Houses of the guild, organizing and supervising the operations of their respective houses. Each Magister’s title bears the name of their House, e.g. Magister of Fire. They, alongside the Guild Master, have absolute authority over the management of the guild, and serve the well-being of the guild members. Magisters are only ever elected by the Seneschal.
Luminaries are guild members who are A-rank and above, and have record of service to the guild (having completed at least six guild missions/missions related to guild business). They are veterans and sources of inspiration.
Brigadiers are the next step after the Luminaries, and are comprised of newer and less experienced additions to the guild. To attain this rank, a guild intro thread, and one mission related to guild activity must have been completed.
The lowest rank belongs to the Auxiliaries, who have just signed up to the guild.
The Houses of Orion Fractal (the Houses of Air, Earth, Water and Fire), whose descriptions have been given earlier, are solely for the purpose of organization. Except the Aces, no one is permanently attached to a House, and can take assignments from whichever House they please. While each Magister is responsible for the organization of their house, they too can take assignments from other Houses if they so desire.
The Sanctuary of Orion Fractal is located in the mountain range in North western Fiore, just west of the Lycan Woods. Its position gives it a natural terrain defense, and makes it a bit isolated from the rest of the world, though a single road leading into the mountains makes it accessible enough. It resembles a Dongxian temple complex and it is here that Orion Fractal helps those in need of atonement and rehabilitation to make their lives better. Once rehabilitation is complete, they are allowed to leave. Some people remain, though, to pass on the mercy they received to others. The main building of the Sanctuary holds a great library in its expansive hall, and this is where new members of visitors to the guild are received. At the highest level of the hall is a strange glowing stone called the Truth Stone. When people come to the guild seeking sanctuary, they are expected to touch the Truth Stone. The Stone will glow blue, if the person’s intents are true, and if not, will glow red, casting a catatonic spell on the toucher, which can only be dispelled by the Seneschal or Magisters. The library contains books of all kinds, but all the books are mundane. It is after all folly to keep your true assets in view of everyone. What many people don’t know is that the Truth Stone is an anchor which connects the Sanctuary to Orion Fractal’s true guild hall, the Palace of Tian Haiyang (Sky Ocean). It looks like a magnificent Dongxian palace, whose major defense is that it is situated at the bottom of the Cloud Sea, a few score miles off the Fiorean north western coast. All buildings are hermetic and watertight, protected by strong magic, which creates a spherical barrier surrounding the Tian Haiyang, keeping the ocean out, and rendering the palace invisible to any without a guild mark. It is here that the actual armories, workshops and libraries of Orion Fractal are kept, as well as the true guild hall, where guild members call home, complete with living quarters, recreational and training facilities, and every other thing needed for the comforts of habitation. Only those with guild marks can, by virtue of their marks, teleport to and from Tian Haiyang, using the Truth Stone, or any other teleporting agency. It is also possible, having the guild mark, to pass through Tian Haiyang’s magical barrier and access the ocean, though water will never pass through the barrier.
As far as alignments go, this is a Good Chaotic guild. Its goals are idealistic, and those who join this guild must roleplay accordingly. Their guild symbol is an upside down Sierpinski Triangle, which is a simple fractal design. Guild members are expected to have their guild tattoos obviously placed, or a very good reason must be given for not doing so.
