I CREATED THE SOUND OF MADNESS
    WROTE THE BOOK ON PAIN
SOMEHOW I'M STILL HERE TO EXPLAIN

--- THAT THE DARKEST HOUR NEVER COMES IN THE NIGHT ---
Halloween had come around once again, and Calliope was as excited as ever to celebrate her favorite holiday. It was her first time celebrating it now that she had been cured of her black outs, which had incidentally been caused by the fact that she’d been suffering from dissociation episodes. It had been nearly a year since the Rune Knight director, Mythal Ragnos, had used his mysterious powers to splinter her soul into three pieces, releasing Aeron and Thana into their own bodies and restoring Calliope to having full control of her own body and mind. A number of things had changed since then, including that she could now speak like a normal person without having to resort to sign language. She’d also lost nearly all of her magic, maintaining only the ability to change the appearance of her body at will.

She’d also given birth to her and Nathaniel’s daughter only a month or so afterward. Meika was an absolutely adorable child, full of life and laughter. Considering her lack of exposure to any sort of motherly figure in her life, Calliope had melded almost seamlessly into the role herself. Mythal and his fiance, Field Marshal Serilda Sinclair, had taken her and Aeron in for a time after Thana was executed, knowing that neither women had any other support systems to rely on, and Calliope had lived with the Rune Knight leaders for a couple of months after having Meika. But Calliope had been determined to only rely on their generosity until she could find a way to stand on her own two feet, and so, with a suggestion from Serilda, she had sought out the guild Luminous Rose and joined their ranks, moving into the guild housing and even managing to raise enough money to start her own business running a coffee shop and sweets bakery.

She had yet to regain the use of any real magic, but she was happy with her small, simple life. Calliope made every effort to visit Nathaniel where he was still imprisoned in Era as well, taking time to see him at least once a week not just so she could spend time with him, but also so that he could be a part of Meika’s life as well. Today was no exception. The Rune Knights had kindly offered to host an in-house Halloween celebration within the jail grounds that all prisoners who had been on good behavior were allowed to attend and spend time with their loved ones. It was extremely high security, of course, as they would not allow any attempts at escape or sabotage, but it was still more than what most other incarcerated individuals could expect.

In the spirit of the holiday, she had elected to dress up, donning a costume that was fashioned like traditional Midian garb. She wore a black and white striped kimono that was covered in pink flower embroidery. Her hair was altered from its normal pink and brown combination to being primarily pink with green tips, the long locks pulled up in a bun behind her head with decorative pins in the form of red, white, and pink flowers. Meika was also dressed up for what would be the girl’s very first Halloween in a black witch gown that had white pleats and ruffles, white stockings, and black shoes. A headband with black cat ears and white fur trim sat on top of her blonde hair, and she carried a pumpkin shaped bucket for collecting candy.

It took them a few minutes to go through security, the Rune Knights dutifully checking all of their personal belongings to make sure there were no weapons, enchanted items, or anything else that could compromise the safety or security of the prison. Once they were cleared, she thanked them and allowed herself to be escorted past a number of locked and guarded doors until she was brought to the large visitation area that had been done up for the event. It was rather small – only a few dozen prisoners and their visitors, as opposed to the hundreds of people that one might see in the more public events taking place outside in the city squares. But it still had more than enough stations with some games and small prizes, even a ride or two.

Calliope wandered through until she spotted Nathaniel. As always, the sight of him brought a bright smile to her face. She pointed toward him. “Look! Who’s that?”

Meika’s vivid pink eyes followed the direction her mother was pointing until she saw him as well. “Dada..!” Roughly eleven months of age or so, Meika was still incapable of anything except the most basic sounds, knowing only a couple of words outside of ‘dada’ and ‘mama’. She was already leaning forward out of Calliope’s arms to try and get to him, her hands stretched out eagerly toward the man.

Calliope stopped and carefully set the girl down on her feet, holding her upright for a brief moment. “Go on! Show him what you can do..!” Slowly but steadily, Meika stepped out of Calliope’s supportive hands and started walking toward Nathaniel.

Looking Toward the Future Empty Re: Looking Toward the Future

Post by Nathaniel Stratford 7th November 2023, 10:33 pm

There was continous clanging of objects, sometimes hands, on metal bars in cells surrounding Nat's. Eventually, it came to his cell shaking him awake. Gorggily he opened his eyes slowly, and he placed his hand over his head in an attempt to shield his eyes from light. The guard then spoke to him from the opposite side of confinement, telling him to wake up already as it was already mid day. Mid day... he thought to himself that it was that late already. Though he merely sighed at the thought. As if to say that something he knows that keeps happening has happened again. Like a bad habit he's been trying to get rid of for he hasn't been able to get some sleep at night because of his own thoughts for as long as he has been in prison. And how long has he been in prison? He doesn't know. Months? Years? It felt longer for the man, but not long enough to make terrors of his mind go away. To not reel from the things he did, the words he was told, and the woman he met.

The guard outside his cell would call out to Nat once more to wake up. With a sigh, the man lifted his hand fdom his face and look upon it for a bit. Serving as a grim reminder of the things he had done were its callous state and the fact that it feels... empyt... He. Feels empty. But nonetheless, he had to stand up, and answer to his guard.

Once up and his head seemingly just hanging from his neck while his gaze only met his feet, the guard would open his cell and go in. Perhaps, the guard and his charge had grown familiar with one another, at least well enough to know that the man isn't going anywhere, especially with the cuffs he has that hinders his magic. Magic... yet another concept he hadn't though of in a long time. He couldn't even remember the last time he had such ability. Hell, he couldn't even remember a time before prison when he held such. Only a blade... driping in the blood of whomever found their way to his.... his... he couldn't even remember the word... all he could think of was his evil... making him slump down even further.

But his guard would stand him straight. Fix his posture, as if having found a bit of compassion for the prisoner that does deserve to be condemned for all the twisted characters and things he has entertained. He would even pat Nat on the back, trying to encourage him to lift what little spirit he had, even telling him he shouldn't look like this once he sees his daughter and wife. The man perked up a bit, as if life found itself an empty shell to inhabit. Slowly he would lift his head up, meeting his guard's eyes. No words were uterred from the prisoner but the guard spoke. "That's right, they're visiting again. For Halloween this time."

Halloween... Nat... remembers, as he looked away as if suddenly have made sense of thr things that are transpiring. More importantly, it was Halloween that he first spent meaningful time with Trin - Calliope. A memory from another lifetime... Which tells Nat that he definitely has been in there for years now. Still, he had a bit of joy to have heard this news. Them visiting is the only thing he has to look forward to these days.

Once he was collected, the guard escorted him to the visiting area of prison that they had set up with booths and other Halloween related activities and decorations. Though Nat wasn't that much interested in them, only with his family. His eyes would scan and lock on to them the moment he saw the area, practically in a tunnel vision towards the only thing he has going on for him.

He essentially wanted to run towards them. But he couldn't what with all the people in the way enjoying the activities. Meanwhile, they had spotted him as well. The love of his life in her beautiful dress pointing at hin to their adorable daughter in a dress as cute as her, making the father feel embarrassed to be just in his prison clothes... but he had no choice.

As he was making his way towards them, je would be stopped. Shocked in a good way at the sight he is witnessing. His little girl. Walking. A smile crept on his lips slowly. As if they were still remembering how. He would then crouch down as he awaited his little one with wide open arms with every step she would call out to him. Dada. Dada! If he considered his heart solid before, it certainly was slowly melting now. Beneath his breath he's whisper to himself softly "Come on, come on. You can do it Meika." trusting her ability.

Eventually she got close enough to touch his arms. The soft slow and gentle grip of his daughter brought with it the reason of life and innocence. He picked her up and hugged her as if it would be the last time. For more than mere moments they lingered before he pulled away addressing his little one properly. "Hi Meika, how you been?" He said softly as he looked in to her eyes, still in disbelief that a person like him made her. They made her.... they made her...

A passing thought made its way to his mind in this joyous occasion as he looked at his cheering and happy child repeatedly calling out her name for him, but he won't let it ruin it. Immediately, he rushed to Calliope and sat their daughter next to her, while he at the other end, keeping their little.one in between.

"It's been years, love.... Uhm... Happy Halloween!" He said. Trying his best to stay cheerful and how cheerful he was, despite the fact that he hasn't had enough sleep or that he was sad for most of his time. No. He has chosen to be happy today. He was determined to be happy todah.

--- THAT THE DARKEST HOUR NEVER COMES IN THE NIGHT ---
Calliope smiled brightly at the sight of Nat brightening up over their daughter walking toward him. She knew how hard it was for him to be where he was, locked up in prison and away from the two of them. It was why she tried so hard to visit as often as possible, so he could still feel like he was a part of Meika’s life and didn’t have to miss out on everything as she was growing up, but there was only so much that could be done. She watched as he picked the girl up when she made it over to him, holding her tightly while she babbled happily at him.

When that was over, he quickly made his way toward Calliope instead, setting Meika down between them and greeting her with a smile. “Hey, sweetie,” Calliope replied, wrapping her arms around him and giving him a lingering hug of her own. “Happy Halloween.” She turned her face up to kiss him softly.

When they’d finished giving one another a proper hello, she pulled back and looked around. “Wow, this is really great! And so generous of them to put together.” Calliope couldn’t think of any policing force that would allow an event like this, even for the prisoners that were on their best behavior. It would be too risky. But clearly the Rune Knights were confident enough in their jobs and technology to feel like they could get away with it, and frankly it made sense to her. Mythal and Serilda were very kind people that didn’t want to just throw criminals in prison and forget about them; they wanted the system to work, for criminals to find ways to rehabilitate themselves so they could one day get back out into society and be productive. Little things like this helped prisoners much like Nat maintain their humanity.

“Why don’t we walk around and see what all the attractions are?” she suggested, happy enough to just be spending time with him. Taking one of Meika’s hands and holding the girl’s bucket so that she could use her other hand to hold Nat’s, the three of them strolled about the small event area to see what kind of activities it had to offer.

One game in particular caught her eye: one where a piece of candy was hidden beneath a hollow item – in this case, a toy coffin – and after mixing the coffins around the player had to try to guess where the candy was. Calliope smiled wide. “Look..! I think we played this game together when we first met.” She and Nat had run into one another by chance at a Halloween festival just like this, so it was bringing back plenty of memories. She looked down at Meika. “You wanna play, baby?”

The girl wasn’t really old enough to speak outside of ‘dada’ and ‘mama’, but that didn’t stop Calliope from putting them in line all the same. She picked the little girl up when it was their turn and watched the game host hide the candy before shuffling the coffins around on the table. “Okay, pick one..!” she encouraged her daughter, leaning forward a bit so it would be easier for Meika to reach. After staring at the pieces for a moment, she leaned forward and took hold of one of the coffins, picking it up… only for it to be empty. “Aww… oh well. Good job, sweetheart.” Luckily, Meika was too young to really get the point of the game anyway, and Calliope gently pulled the coffin out of her hands and returned it to the game host, who exchanged it for a spirit ticket.

“Anything you want to try?” she asked Nat as they walked away.

Post by Nathaniel Stratford 16th November 2023, 8:32 pm

"I hope you two have been doing well." He said after Calliope greeted her back. And it seemed almost picture perfect, their loving family. Somehow Nat still couldn't believe that he was still lucky to have something like this that it almost brought a tear to his eye... A second chance... to have people who cared for him, visiting when they could, which suddenly made him remember that it has only been a year since he's been locked up to be fortunate enough to find comfort that he can still play father to his child... but does he deserve it? But despite that, he just wanted to focus on the moment. On the people in front of him right now. Calliope hugged Nat... but as they stayed locked in it, with Meika in her own space in the middle, he wouldn't let go. He couldn't let go. Like a man clinging to the last bits of his sanity while he was assaulted from every horror imaginable in all sides. And it wasn't hard to paint the picture in his head either, the man could hear the screams mixed up in the laughter. After all, this was Halloween, terror is part of the occasion. Which is why it'll be forgiven if people thought Nat was afraid of Halloween. No. In fact, as he clinged to his Sanity, his love, he could remember that Halloween was the first date they shared. The man could remember everything past the Neutral Grounds while he is with Calliope. And just like that time, he wanted to make it a happy memory for them as well.

Eventually the hug had to stop, no thanks in part to Meika who needs some space, calling out to her parents for it. "Sorry there Meika. Hehe." He apologized, rather embarassed about it. And when Calliope leaned in for a gentle kiss, Nat couldn't stop himself to lean in just a tab bit quicker, to share in a longer, more passionate one. The man couldn't get enough of her it seems.

Nat then looked around with Calliope at all the stalls and the freaking roller coaster inside the visitation area. He'd been to this area before many times and not once did he remember that a ride such as that could fit in the area. It was really impressive. "Yeah... you wouldn't think this is a prison or -- Nevermind." He replied. Stopping himself from continuing any further so as not to remember that he was in prison. And to sound thankful for his captors. He does respect Ragnos and Sinclair, especially for resching out for a second chance... to prove himself a better man... but he does not believe they will be even at least acquaintances anytime soon. "Yeah let's just go have a look around." sounding happy and excited to Calliope's proposal of looking for something to do. Then he turned to his daughter, trying to hype her up for some fun. "What do you say, Meika? Let's go have some fun? Yeah? You wanna have fun?" Meika in turn was filled to the brim in exictement nodding her head quite rigirously and bursting out laughing. Nat in turn laughed a bit and carried his daughter over his shoulders so as she could see the sights, and as he did the little girl weee'd and giggled on her way up.

They across a rather nostalgic booth. Calliope was the first to point it out and Nat exclaimed in agreement in return. "Oh yeaaah... that was such a long time ago. But I remember it being fun!" Meika seemingly thought so too as she exclaimed their names... the only words she addorably know so far. "Okay, good luck, baby!" he said. He would then lean in closer, anticipating the coffin their daughter would pick. There truly was something exciting to watching their child grow.

But unfortunately, she would come up empty handed. Both Calliope and him would express slight sadness over not winning "Yeah we'll get it next time." he added to what Calliope said.

His love then asked if there was something he wanted to do. But aftet looking around, seeing what the activities would do to the participants, he was hesitant to pick something out. Every passenger on the roller coaster would exclaim some sort of regret or genuine fear over what they saw. On the other, a shadowy figure forcing people to basically do the same. "Uh..." he sighed after he was asked. He thought it a bit rude honeslty. That perhaps this was another Rune Knight twist, as if being in their cells wasn't enough for the prisoners. But that was no longer his concern. He just doesn't want to that given his track record of "Crusading".

The man continued to look around and would fortunately be helped by their daughter's stomach. She tugged on her father and calling him out as she inched closer to what looked like a fruit stand. Nat observed the stand and found it to be another of the activities because the person stationed there handed out the same ghost ticket to other people. "No, baby, that's not for eating." He said, laughing as he came down to pick her up. But given that the stand is comparatively harmless, he said "Hey, maybe we can do this instead?"

"Okay, let dada have a go, show you how it's done." He added, as he approached the stand to do the activity. In truth, he just wanted to protect her as he saw some apples do inflict some harm on the unfortunate and he was hoping not to be counted among them. As in slanother truth, he is not so skilled so as to discern what was an okay apple and what wasn't. Maybe he did... in a previous life...

Slowly, Nat lowered his lip to the floating apples. And picked out one he thought looked average. Not too fresh to be deceivingly good and be a lip biter and not too bad to avoid the worms. His tactic failed however, and the apple his barely touched with his lip leaped out and bore its fangs and before he knew, there was a sharp stinging pain and an apple on his lip, with the biting roles reversed.

Nat backed up instantly from the pain and inhaled through grinned teeth so as to avoid screaming aloud in pain. He crushed the apple with his hand, enough to make it stop biting him. The stand attendant in turn laughed at him as he handed out his ticket saying to better luck next time which he accepted while annoyed with one hand while the other trying to smother where he was bit. Meika was patting Nat where she could seemingly trying to cheer him up, which the man appreciated.

'Why don't you try brewing a healing potion for that bite, sir?' Nat turned around and saw a warlock and witch pair present to hin a table of ingredients for brewing up potions. 'It's free.' they added. Nat agreed without thinking. He really couldn't think of anything through the pain and simply said okay in a muffled voice.

Nat turned every ingredient over and picked up ones he remembered using to patch himself up in the Neutral Grounds and in the Mountain Village before joining Dies Irae. Herbs... Blue Mushroom.... Honey... Lizard's Tail.... Frog's tongue.... Yes this should do it. The attending spellusers instructed Nat on how to mix them up into a potion. Once it was completed, the man didn't hesitate to drink it. And not a moment after was there a puff of smoke and glitter....and his clothes on the floor.

From his pile of clothes, a lump moved around until it got to one of the holes and out came a frog. The frog took a look of himself and sighed "Well... at least the pain's gone.... and I can still talk..." it said, in Nat's voice. The frog continued to look at himself and was impressed that his magic dampeners resized with him.

Dada? Meika cried out confused, sad, sniffling and scared. She didn't know what happened to her father or if she's okay. As far she's concerned her father disappeared in front of her. "I'm over here Meika, I'm okay don't worry." Nat said.

'You know, this reminds me of a fairy tale I used to read when I was a kid.' the witch said. 'In it, a heroic princess saves a frog and kisses it, turning him back to the prince that he was and they lived happily ever after.' she continued. 'Oh yeah, I remember that one too. One of my favorites. And could tooootaly happen.' the warlock replied 'But we couldn't say for sure unless someone was brave. But oh well, not our problem now. Muahaha. Oh and by the way, here's your spirit ticket. Thank you for trying our potion booth.' he added. Nat on the other hand, knew what they were hinting at. But he continued to check himself to see if he was the poisonous kind.... thankfully he wasn't. "Oh please someone save me." he said, trying to play along with the witch and warlock. Though he wasn't a good of an actor as them.

I CREATED THE SOUND OF MADNESS
    WROTE THE BOOK ON PAIN
SOMEHOW I'M STILL HERE TO EXPLAIN

--- THAT THE DARKEST HOUR NEVER COMES IN THE NIGHT ---
The kiss lasted a little longer than she’d been expecting, but she certainly didn’t have any complaints about that, happily holding her lips against his with a soft sigh. When Meika protested being stuck between them for too long, they finally parted with Calliope giving a little giggle. They moved on and gave Meika a chance to try the coffin game. The little girl didn’t win, but thankfully she was still too young to really understand a concept like that anyway so she wasn’t too disappointed by it.

So they carried on, and eventually Nathaniel opted to try the apple bobbing game, passing Meika back to her mother so he could have his hands free. “Yay! Go, daddy..!” Calliope cheered, showing the little girl how to help encourage the man. He eyed the apples carefully, clearly trying to keep an eye out for the ones that had a literal bite to them. Unfortunately, the one he picked was one of the enchanted ones, and he quickly found himself at the receiving end of a nasty nip. Calliope gasped in surprise and concern, one of her hands reaching up to cover her mouth. She was sure there wouldn’t be any permanent damage, but it still probably hurt.

“Are you okay?” she asked him when he returned to them, lifting her hand up to cup his cheek and trying to inspect the wound. A nearby vendor offered Nathaniel the chance to try to brew a medical potion to help. He gave it a try, throwing a few ingredients together that he seemed to recognize and had maybe even used before. When he was done, he tossed the drink back…

And then suddenly his clothes were in a heap on the floor. Calliope blinked. “Nat?!” She was doing her best not to overreact, knowing that the prisoners wouldn’t have been allowed to take anything that was harmful or that would give them an opportunity to free themselves, but it was still very unexpected. Even Meika had started worrying, crying out for her dad and confused as to where he had gone. A moment later, a small lump in the clothing moved and out popped Nathaniel in the shape of a frog. He could still speak like his normal self. “Oh my goodness…”

It was a little concerning… but also a little funny. Calliope bit back a small smile, shaking her head. “Well…I’m glad your lip isn’t hurting anymore, I guess.” Meika was still confused, so while the witch told a story about a princess and a frog, Calliope reached down and lifted Nathaniel up on her palm, holding her up for Meika to see. “See! He’s right here baby. He just got turned into a frog! Isn’t that silly?”

The attendant seemed to be hinting that the only way to undo the effects of the potion was with a kiss. Nathaniel seemed to be rolling with it, overdramatically acting like a damsel in distress as he begged for someone to save him. Calliope giggled. “What do you think, baby? Should I save him?”

    “Dada..!”

“Well, I suppose you can’t very well have a frog for a father…” With a playful smirk, she fearlessly lifted Nat up to her face and kissed him right on the lips. With a magical pop and a poof of smoke, Nat would miraculously find himself human again and standing on his own two feet… though he would have to put his clothes back on. “Oops.”

Once he was dressed again, they wandered around a bit more until they found a costume contest that looked like fun. A few other children that wer there visiting their parents for the event were already starting to line up on stage, so Calliope gave Nat her iLac for him to take a few pictures while she entered Meika into the contest. Standing up on stage with the little girl in her arms, where she kept waving several times down to her father, they waited as the judges took the time to look over each costume.

Much to Calliope’s surprise and delight, Meika won! “Good job, baby girl!” she said with a smile, giving her daughter a kiss on the forehead.
