Beaux swung his staff forward, meeting his enemy’s weapon halfway between them with a sharp clang. The two struggled for a moment before metal sheared off metal. Beaux had tossed aside the enemy’s weapon and kicked them in the chest, sending them flying off the roof the two stood on. Only a faint thud and a cry of pain signified their harsh landing on the street below.
The angel used his staff for support as he looked around once more. Or, perhaps it should be said that it was her staff. Beaux was currently in the form of the angel Praeclara. This form was certainly a formidable one, though by appearances, one wouldn’t assume that to be so. The female angel donned skimpy armor and her massive golden wings stood out among the battle. The staff in her hand was glowing white at the tip. Sharp metal glinted off the bladed edges threateningly.
In the rooftops and streets around the Major General, the Knights under her command battled on. They were in conflict with a gang of hooligans that had been causing some trouble and harm in Clover Town. The place was chock full of legendary mages who were in retirement. Their lavish houses lined the lakebound city from bank to bank. Many had monuments or statues in their names and held regular meet-and-greets for fans. The city was always lively and bustling.
Beaux and his subordinates had been called to Clover Town to investigate some horrifying and mysterious circumstances. A few of the residing mages had been found tied up in their homes with both eyes missing right from their sockets. Only the most powerful retired mages seemed to be targeted - ones who had the strongest magic. It was a truly awful thing to experience, which Beaux had done a lot of. He was the one, along with his Sergeant, who had interviewed the victims. Many had said that a man had suddenly appeared in their houses and stolen their eyes. It hadn’t seemed to be a bloody ordeal, as all of the victims’ eyes had been cleanly removed. It was if someone just… scooped them out. It was certainly the most odd situation Beaux had ever seen.
Shortly after, the Major General had sent Corporeals with a group of five privates each to various posts around the city. As night fell, the pods had waited for any sign of the criminals in charge of the eye theft. Should any one group encounter them, Beaux and his larger squadron would head immediately there to lend assistance. It had been about 6 AM when a sharp call had come through the lacrima radio network that the Knights were using. “General Phacelia! We’ve caught sight of the culprits near the Desert Rose Bridge! Send assistance immedi-” the voice of the Corporeal had been cut off by the radio being knocked from his hand. The larger squadron could head the sounds of battle coming through the radio and headed at once to the area.
Upon arrival, they had leapt immediately into battle. Beaux had switched to Praeclara’s form immediately, the golden woman being one of the best defensive forms he had access to. It had been a surprise that there seemed to be more dark mages participating in these crimes than just one man. Perhaps the victims had been incorrect.
The opposing mages fought hard and dirty. All sorts of tricks had been used against the Rune Knights, and Beaux found that many of his subordinates were knocked out of the battle. So far no deaths had occurred, but the fight was young.
The Major General ducked as she heard the approach of a projectile. An object came whizzing over her head, coming to land on the next roof over and exploding in a splash of water. She whirled to see a snickering dark mage tossing two more water balloons in his hands. Beaux couldn’t tell if it was the guy’s magic or if he was just there to cause trouble. She ducked again to miss the second balloon.
Golden wings began to glow with a blinding light that reached out and burned the face and eyes of the water-balloon thrower. He let out a yelp and dropped the balloon in his hand, leaping from the roof to escape the pain. A glowing residue was left on his face as he ran away, crying from the pain. It would continue to hurt him for a while longer.
Beaux looked around and noticed that her magic had burnt a few surrounding enemies, giving her allies a chance to gain the upper hand. Sergeant Blue came clambering up the side of the roof, his majestic warhammer in hand. Once he came to stand beside the temporarily-female Major General, he stopped for a moment to catch his breath while the two observed the battle around. Roy Blue was a man in his late 50s and had participated in many a war, which had worn down on his body. Despite his tough past, the man still fought with a vigor that even some 20 year olds lacked.
“Major General,” he began, taking one last deep breath. “Corporeal Rosser said he may have seen the leader of this group. They’re over Desert Rose Bridge and north by a bit. Would you like to pursue it?”
“Yes,” Beaux replied, her voice light and airy but with a stony edge. “Let’s find the head of these délinquants and end this battle before too many people are disturbed.” Roy nodded in response. “You keep a hold on things here, I will head to the other group alone.”
“Yessir! Or, ma’am?” Roy said, confused. The Major General let off a shrug. “It doesn’t matter in this form. Good luck, Sergeant!” With that, the elegantly clad female angel took to the skies. The golden light of the morning sun reflected off her wings, the feathers shining like they were threaded with metal. Beaux skimmed low over the rooftops, crossing the stream that ran beneath Desert Rose Bridge just a little upstream. As she drew closer to where the leader was, she grew a little apprehensive. Battle still scared the angel after what happened with Sanguine. She was always worried that another enemy would be so strong that they would bring her near death once more.
