- Gwendolyn Marie Briggs was born to be a doting homemaker, wife, and mother - at least, that’s what her parents think. Being the youngest child and the only daughter among seven boys made her childhood tough. Her family is quite traditional and believes wholeheartedly in strict gender roles. While her parents encouraged her brothers to be rowdy, athletic, and leaderly, Gwen was treated differently. She had to help her mother take care of the home and learn how to do ‘womanly’ things like baking and sewing, all while her brothers got to help their father with work on the massive apple orchard that the family owns.
Gwen always watched enviously through the windows at all the fun her brothers got to have. Hunting, whittling, wrestling, climbing apple trees, they got to do it all. And here she was, stuck learning the correct way to fold an apple turnover. When she was about six, Gwen started rebelling. It was little things at first, like tying her shoes in a double knot instead of a bow. Then she stole her brothers’ knives and tried whittling. She refused to help her mother with chores. Then she started sneaking out at night. During these years, she discovered her love of being up high. She would set out in the dark and climb the biggest apple tree in the orchard. These nights were treasured memories for her, a chance to relax from strict rules and just watch the stars.
Eventually, her parents had enough of her rebellion and sought out a school to send her to. They thought it would help round her out and teach her obedience. Gwen fought it at first, but then realized that she might get a chance to be herself and be away from her parents. They sent her off to an all-girls school in another part of the country.
During her years at the school, Gwen began to form her own personality and make friends. The school turned out to not be as strict as her parents were hoping, but she never told them for fear of being sent to another school. She got to try all kinds of activities and learn things beyond what she could have ever comprehended back at home. One of the things she learned of was the guilds full of mages across the world. Since that moment, she dreamed of joining one to help people, even though she didn’t have magic. When graduation time came, Gwen knew she didn’t want to go back home. Her mother and father would surely force her back into the lifestyle she had left all those years ago. So, on the train back home after graduation, Gwen knocked out the supervising teacher and escaped the train car. After a few weeks of hitchhiking, she made it to the bigger cities of Fiore to start her own life, living on her own terms.
✶ Personality ✶
Optimistic ❂ She always sees the best in people and believes, often foolishly, that others have good intentions. In her eyes, everything will end well, even if the situation seems grim.
Outgoing ❂ Gwen will talk to anyone and everyone about anything! Sometimes she goes a bit overboard. Sometimes she takes the lead in groups because nobody else can get a word in.
Naïve ❂ Gwen grew up very, very sheltered. Her view of the world is through rose-tinted glasses and there is a lot she doesn’t know about society. The time she spent at the all-girls school helped open her eyes a bit, but she still has her own, overly optimistic view of what the world is like.
Can-Do Attitude ❂ Gwen has always had to prove herself, so she is very determined. There are very few things she’s unwilling to try. When she sets her mind to something, not much can stop her.
Helpful ❂ If someone needs help, Gwen will drop what she’s doing and go out of her way to give help. When she joins a guild, it will be to help people in a more official and organized way!
Oblivious ❂ Sometimes Gwen doesn’t pick up on subtle signals or hints. There are times when she will notice something but ignore it for the sake of continuing conversation.
Dreamer ❂ Since she was little, Gwen has always dreamed of doing the exact opposite of what her parents wanted for her. She wants nothing more than to go out and achieve big things, just to prove to herself that she can and to spite her parents. Her dreams are grand, sometimes unachievable, but she holds onto them dearly.
Energetic ❂ Gwen seems to have endless energy, especially when she gets really invested a conversation or a specific task. She avoids caffeine because it makes her bounce off the walls more than she already does.
