Completed Step Into the Ring (Percy/Leon)

Post by Leon Hoffman 10th October 2020, 3:42 pm

    PART ONE: IN THE RING

Neutral Grounds was known for many things other than its life without magic. It was a metropolis of innovation and technology, and it was undeniably one of the best places to go for a city-life experience, especially if you were looking for work or entertainment. Well, for Leon, they were both one in the same. For the last six months, the menacing-looking man had settled down here for as long as he could afford it. It was difficult to find work outside of Neutral Grounds for him, since a lot of it was catered toward mages or people of remarkable combat ability. Not only was he not a sorcerer, but he didn't look for a fight anyway. He just wanted to make enough money to have a little security for when he traveled back to Bellum... if they would even let him come back. It had been a year since he was cast away, and he kept telling himself that they'd see his skills for what they were and let him return—it just wasn't the right time yet, is all.

Meanwhile, Leon had been working several low-paying jobs just to keep his head above water and afford his rent. Between working as a part-time mechanic, waiter, delivery man, and sometimes found other hustles on the side, he had enough money to cover the rent of his mediocre apartment and groceries, but he had to be frugal after that. A lot of his work was dependent on tips, and people were picky as to whether or not they'd be generous. The only sort of stable income he had were boxing matches, and that was only because he'd get paid some amount of money regardless if he lost or not, as long as he showed up, and Leon always showed up. It's not like he really cared if he ever lost or not, as the exercise and the ability to punch something helped him clear his head and vent a little. He even bought a punching bag so he could do it at home, too.

The Equal Grounds Boxing Ring was just that—a boxing ring. Ever since six months ago, Leon had been given several matches to participate in because of some man who saw potential in him as a professional. Well, it made sense, right? Leon came from a family of private soldiers and trained like one for eighteen years. Needless to say, he had some skills, but he didn't have a passion for fighting, and so he entered every ring with a goal of leaving it in one piece. He gave it his all each time, never pulling his punches, but he often fell short of a victory. It never really bothered him, but his "manager" seemed to reach the end of his nerves today.

"Out of all of your matches these past six months, you've only won about half of them. I'm sorry kid, but I'm losing a lot of money because of your losses." said a burly fat man, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"I'm sorry, sir. I'll win it this time. I'm sure of it." In a private training area separated from the main ring, the two men stood there alone together. Leon wore a grey hoody to cover his black tank top, bandages wrapped around his fists. He had a scary look on his face, although he was feeling pretty guilty right now. He always had that face—a resting bitchface, if you will. He had trouble landing tips and friends because of it. "Look, I... I really need this! Just give me another chance, sir!"

"Kid..." the burly man sighed, pausing for a moment to consider Leon's determination. After a few seconds of silence and Leon's intense staring (it almost looked like he was glaring!), the manager sighed again. "Look, I have one match left for you. If you win that one, I'll keep giving you matches. But if you lose—"

"I accept! Thank you, sir!" Leon made a ninety-degree bow, gesturing his immense gratitude accompanied by his passionate response in that deep, bass-filled voice of his. "I won't let you down."

"Hmph!" the burly man smiled, his arms crossed behind his back, "It starts tomorrow morning, so get here early, a'ight?"

    . . . . . . . . .

The next morning, Leon arrived early as he was told. He had a small breakfast, nothing more than a large red apple, and he wore the exact same thing as yesterday. He didn't have very many clothes, and a lot of his wardrobe just consisted of various work uniforms. The only set of personal clothing was an old black tracksuit, sports sneakers, and cargo shorts. His hands were wrapped in a fresh line of bandages, and he seemed especially focused today.

When he arrived at Equal Grounds, it was packed with people. Needless to say, this boxing ring had quite the following. It wasn't even noon yet and people were still swarming to see a match. He always gave his all for every fight, but today was a little different. If he lost this boxing ring, he didn't know where else he could go to fight and blow some steam. There was always the gym, but it wasn't quite the same. Besides, there was really no telling what his income would look like if he lost this boxing ring. He had to win this. His livelihood literally depended on it!

Leon kept his hoodie draped over his head of black hair as he kept unwrapping and rewrapping his bandages, sitting on the bench on the other side of the ring as he waited for his opponent to arrive. It wasn't anything grand like some of the rings you'd see brodcasted over national lacrimavision, but this establishment had a hype of its own.

"FIGHTEEEERS! ENTER THE RING! IS EVERYONE READY FOR ANOTHEEEEEER RUMBLE IN THE RING?!" the announcer yelled into the mic, followed by the rampant cheers of the crowd. At this point it felt like white noise after hearing them so often, and the moment the announcer spoke, Leon stepped to his full six feet and three inches and over to the ring. He was a big man, well built, muscular, and tall. His opponents were usually around the same size, so it was nothing to sneeze at. "TODAY, OUR FIGHTERS ARE GOING IN WITH BARE FISTS! THERE'S NO FILTER, FOLKS!"

When Leon stepped into the ring, he stepped in with a fire in his tigerlike eyes and a tension building up in his stomach. He had to win this.

Leon's boss had done him dirty.

Percy, though sleepy and a little grumpy from the early hour, was dutifully there bright and early for warm-ups. The air in the Neutral Zone was always like drinking a really strong coffee, though. His mind cleared and focused quickly. He'd yet to figure out why that was, even though the reason stared him as blatantly in the face as the reason he liked to come here to box. There was no magic for him to struggle against, no supernatural enhancements for people to use to cheat. For a change, all the focus of everyone was on technology and just plain human skill, both which Percy had experience with in spades. This was a place where Percy could shine. His schedule was busy enough that he didn't often have time to devote to this little hobby, but when he did have a moment, he was more than happy to indulge. The second Dagger son certainly didn't need the money, so coming here was purely for the enjoyment of the sport and to keep his skills sharp. He wasn't a regular contender by any means, but when he did sign up for a fight, he always won. It was prime time for hustlers to make bank since the less dedicated crowd wouldn't know of Percy and would bet that he'd lose due to inexperience or from looks alone, and managers would also make a killing betting against their own boxer unless they were either stupid or falsely confident. Ticket sales were the only reason Equal Ground liked to see him coming. He didn't even have an official manager.

The man sporting the expensive-looking black hoodie and sweat pants combo didn't look like much to the naked eye. Most of anything that might seem imposing was covered in fabric. The scar on his face would always shine like a beacon of weakness, though he'd gotten such a mark in an accident rather than losing any sort of battle. He also seemed a bit soft compared to the other boxers, often stuttering when flustered or just quietly keeping to himself in awkward silence. There was a beat-up old punching bag in the corner of the gym no one used, and that's where he did his stretches and put a few more cracks in the leather. Most didn't pay him any mind or had learned their lessons and harbored a sort of bitter admiration for him once he'd cleaned their clocks. Right now, no one was in there with him. It was just about time to go out there, so everyone not fighting or announcing was in a seat.

Waiting his turn, Percy walked out of the back toward the ring. He barely even glanced at his opponent until he was across from him. His pants had been swapped for slick black shorts. His arms, forearms, feet, and ankles were tightly wrapped. It was a strange choice since kicks weren't used in boxing, but Percy preferred it. In the ring, shoes were a hindrance more than a help. Shrugging out of his hoodie, any preconceived notion that he was a slight boy biting off more than he could chew was likely to disappear. Even though he had a tank top on, it was tight to his skin. Expertly sculpted, lean muscles came into view. It seemed that every muscle in his whole body, from the top of his head to the soles of his feet, had been trained individually into peak condition.

As the crowd cheered, mismatched eyes beneath mismatched hair finally took in his competition. He had to angle his chin up a little to meet the taller man's slightly scary gaze. Confident as he may be in this moment, it didn't take a lot to fluster Percy. If he'd had to speak, he'd have been stuttering all over the place. Thankfully, this was a place where fists did the talking, so his burnt marshmallow face could only stare at him in vaguely startled silence. What an expression! By looks alone, his opponent looked like he'd chew Percy up and spit him out.

But as the referee came to the center, had the two meet there and knock knuckles before the start, and sent them back to their ends of the ring for the bell to sound, all the softness in his face switched off as if the sound had awakened some sort of sleeping beast. Eyes bright with excitement and even a touch of cockiness, a fierce young man wasted no time stepping back toward the center, arms up and inviting the man across from him to try and land a hit.

Step Into the Ring (Percy/Leon) Ul2vGlI

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

    PART 1: IN THE RING

When his opponent stepped into the ring, Leon was, at the very least, a little surprised. There weren't very many short contenders here, or at least there was an abundance of fighters who were six foot two and above. Even the shortest fighters on the Equal Grounds roster looked incredibly macho, so yeah, he was a little taken aback by his size when he first saw him. But as he slipped out of his clothes, it quickly became apparent as to why he was able to stand in the ring with people so much bigger than him. Leon was so used to seeing big, gruff men that he almost forgot that men and women with different builds looked different. When he saw that deceptively athletic, toned body laid bare in front of him, it was clear that this man had worked hard to get it and probably worked just as hard to keep it that way. It's not like it mattered anyway. The moment those two bumped fists, he couldn't care less about how much of a surprise this guy was—he only cared about how he was going to beat him.

You'd think that for someone his size, he'd take more of an aggressive approach to the beginning of the match. It's not like he looked particularly durable or sturdy, so what sort vibe was being sent out when he... waited for Leon like that? Not only that, but it seemed like this guy's entire demeanor changed the moment they bumped fists too. Maybe it was just in his head since he also was a little bit more intense and fierce than usual. This was his only source of income that he'd work for even if he wasn't being paid to, after all. It was all on the line, now.

If his opponent was going to wait for him, Leon wouldn't turn down a free hit. So, without a moment of hesitation and with his hand held up in front of him, the dark-haired man approached his opponent with one large, swift step, swinging his right fist right where his opponent's jaw would be. From his experience, even though all fighters were quick to protect their faces, he was oftentimes successful in wearing them down through power alone. Maybe it wasn't too bad to undestimate this guy, since he looked pretty lean. If some of the biggest fighters found his powerful punches overwhelming, surely this man wouldn't be any different.

Percy's fighting mind was as analytical as a computer identifying weaknesses in a structure. The way Leon stepped, which foot he used, the very obvious twist of his torso as he raised his right arm. A right hook was coming and he didn't care how far in advance that Percy knew it either. He knew he had plenty of time if he wanted to step back and dodge, or duck to the side and get a body blow in. It was just a matter of what kind of message he wanted to send. The young man wasn't one to play around with his opponents, but this was also one of the very few times he could show off. Plus, he wanted to see just how much strength was packed in the muscles of the bigger man.

Holding his ground with a wide, sturdy stance, Percy raised his left arm in a block, as if it was a shield. The hook hit his tensed arm with a smack, but Percy's arm didn't give an inch. Not bad. There was certainly some power in there. This man wasn't untrained. He was average, if not just above average. What was his win-loss ratio? Just as many weren't aware of him due to his inconsistent participation, he was likewise oblivious to any of the boxers he'd yet to fight. There were a couple he'd fought previously that he imagined would have lost to this guy if the first punch was any indication, but there were a few more he figured had this guy outclassed. There was still plenty of time for this dark-haired guy to surprise him, though.

An instant after the block, Percy used the strength of that arm to basically parry the punching arm away and brought his own right hook in, aiming at Leon's ribs. It was too early to go for the face. He didn't want the fight to be over that quickly!

Step Into the Ring (Percy/Leon) Ul2vGlI

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

    PART 1: IN THE RING

When Leon felt his fist ram against his opponent's arm, it felt like he was hitting a wall. He really couldn't equate what just happened something other than... hitting a wall. Sturdy and hard, Leon put a lot of his power into that punch, and yet this guy didn't seem to give in, not even a little bit. Because this wonderful little ring they were in was on the line for him, he didn't save his best tactic for last. Instead, he expected a quick fight on his end, and yet it appeared that he'd have to work a lot harder from now on if he wanted to keep fighting at all. For this match, at least.

When his first attack landed, and yet failed, Leon was left more vulnerable than he liked to be, and this split-haired man immediately went for a job to his ribs. At their distance, it would be hard to react to that swiftness, let alone block it. Leon wasn't particularly speedy himself and was known more for his power and persistence. To him, they were his greatest weapons. As a result, he braced for that sensitive blow, inhaling sharply as he felt the knuckles dig into his side. It hurt, but that's how he knew he could make a counterattack. But if their fight was going to be just the two of them trading hits rapidly, Leon knew the pressure would settle in. He was persistent, but that was through willpower alone. His durability and defense were subpar at best.

As it turns out, bracing for that blow was not only to help him cope with it, but also prepared him to strike immediately after. He took another short step forward, this two making two consecutive jabs at his smaller opponent—a jab to their jaw again with one hand, and an uppercut aimed straight for their stomach with the other. He was sure that this guy would block the first one, but he had hope that he'd plant a firm one in that toned stomach of his.

With every pump of blood, with every beat of the heart, it slips further away.

Percy did end up surprised. This guy could take a hit. He barely even reacted to a hard punch right in the rib cage. He wasn't very fast, but he was strong and didn't buckle easily, it seemed. Two could play that game, except Percy was rather speedy as well. Everyone had weaknesses, but his were few and far between when it came to physical combat. The Daggers did nothing halfway. Perhaps Percy had been trained even harder because he didn't have any magic. Maybe the universe had some form of mercy on him, letting him have a sharp mind and great physical abilities to make up for robbing him of any magical abilities. If only he knew how deeply that magical deficiency really went. Magic was a weakness indeed, one that could kill him with strong enough exposure and had nearly done so several times now. An illness and addiction he was powerless to resist pursuit of. It was a toxic situation to be sure.

Swift and graceful, Percy raised his formerly attacking hand to literally catch the fist coming at his face. He could have blocked the one at his abdomen, but decided not to. If he was going to enjoy this, and if the people here to be entertained were to get their money's worth, it needed to look exciting. Tensing his muscles, he braced for the impact as it came. And came it did. With enough power to skid his wrapped feet back a couple inches, Percy tanked the hit. He and Artemis had sparred and traded hits like this hand even harder so often, he barely registered the light sting of pain. Still, the crowd roared.

As he relented those couple inches, he didn't release the first hand he'd caught. He'd return it to his intense opponent by quite literally throwing it back at him with all his strength, hoping to knock him off balance. With lightning-fast footwork, he dashed in after him, this time aiming a left hook at Leon's jaw, interested to see if it'd hit or not. The testosterone rose within the two-toned man by the second, every pump of his heart pushing more through his body's veins. The ghost of a smirk was tugging at his lips. If he'd been your average muscle-head, he'd have already been talking trash, but instead, his gleaming, confident eyes and cocky, playful expression would have to suffice. He planned to wipe the floor with this guy, but he didn't want to be mean and do it too soon. His face silently screamed "come on!" even though he'd only give up so many hits in the spirit of the game.

Step Into the Ring (Percy/Leon) Ul2vGlI

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

    PART 1: IN THE RING

It hit? Was he particularly vulnerable down there? Maybe this guy was so focused on protecting his face that he didn't think about protecting the rest of his body. Well, Leon wasn't really in a position to contemplate his observations, all he did was make them and act on them. Well, tried. He was stuck with a body that didn't react as fast as his mind, especially since he acted mostly on thought and not instinct. It didn't really mean anything if he couldn't do any of the things he wanted to, and so he relied mostly on brute strength to get through these matches. Like some sort of untapped potential.

Whatever the case, this guy's reactivity was still stunning, throwing his own fist back at Leon with intense strength. It's not like he actually hit him, but with both of his feet planted forward, Leon felt himself lose his balance as there wasn't a firmly planted foot in the ground behind his body to catch him. He panicked, feeling that familiar and overbearing sensation that came over you just when you realized you were about to fall down and lowered his hands from in front of him for just a split second so he could adjust his feet. He caught himself, but when his head returned to the ring, he was met with a precise slug to his jaw, snapping his head to the side from the unbraced impact. The moment those knuckles of his planted into his jaw, Leon felt his teeth sink into his lower lip as his head whipped to the side, busting a small gap in it from the force and tasting iron in his mouth. After that blow, Leon decided not to charge right into that guy as he did before, quickly spitting a small amount of blood that briefly accumulated in his mouth off to the side of the court.

This guy counterattacked faster than Leon could react, and his aggressive playstyle wasn't going to work if he couldn't break through his defense on the first try. Even though Leon was the one who technically got the first hit in, it was like he was the first one to actually suffer any consequences for his vulnerability. His opponent may have taken the hit to the gut, but he didn't seem fazed by it one bit, or at least Leon couldn't tell by the way he counterattacked so quickly.

"Okay, okay! Let's go, let's go!" Leon said in a mumble, readjusting his feet and beginning to slowly move into his opponent's vicinity. It was said more to hype himself up than to provoke his opponent if he heard it at all, and although the two of them had drastically different faces—one looking inherently more thuggish than the other, more well-groomed one—both of their eyes had this quiet fire in them. Frankly, Leon couldn't tell if that brightness in this guy's eyes pissed him off or excited him, but it's like not it was the first time he's felt cornered so early in a match. But he would have to win because unlike every other fight, this could've been his last one.

He held his fists strictly in between his face and the rest of his body, hoping to even out his defense a bit more as he advanced inward with caution. Slowly, slowly—he had to do this slowly. His mind and body didn't work together fast enough in tandem of one another for him to rely on anything but his power, and yet he knew it wouldn't likely be enough to break this guy. Abruptly, he suddenly and quickly moved in, his body hunched low to the ground as he leaned to the side and attempted to make another powerful jab at his opponent's gut, with the other hand held close to his face for insurance. It's like he pushed his entire body into that punch like he was pulling himself forward and invading his opponent's space with every slug and lunge. He wanted to seem like an unstoppable force, like a tsunami, because that's all he had going for him right now—persistence and power.

Persistence was one thing, but relying on power alone was quite another. Persistence was the one trait that made Percy who he was, and he supplemented that as much as he could by being strong. But he was also very fast and relied on a good mix of thought and instinct. Percy was encouraged that his opponent seemed to be using his brain a little and was adjusting to try and compensate for deficiencies. A better defense would help him, but even though he was adapting, he could tell there wasn't much instinct in his movements other than to try and overwhelm foes with raw strength. It'd been a very long time since he encountered a fighter here that thought too much. It was normally the other end of the spectrum. There was a lot of potential here, but he didn't know how to use it nor did he have the training to let his body do what it needed to do to win. Unless this guy had something up his proverbial sleeves, this fight would be over soon. He'd like to talk to Leon afterward. Maybe if he could share some of his training with this guy, he'd show the meatheads of Equal Grounds a thing or two when Percy was too busy to come fight.

As Leon lunged with everything he had, but what a waste if it didn't hit anything. Percy had speed. While his opponent might rush in like a tidal wave, he wasn't nearly as wide and unavoidable as one. A dodge to the side was all it took. As a boxer, one had to be very light on their feet. Once Percy started the strategic footwork of a boxing bounce, he could easily lean, dodge, and otherwise move in an instant to either avoid or take advantage of an opponents openings. When he stepped out of range of Leon's punch, he countered with a body blow to his vulnerable right ribcage. Whether Leon was able to dodge him or block it in time didn't matter. By the time Leon would be able to turn on Percy again, Percy would be dipping out of fist range again.

The fight continued with Percy cheekily hopping around and dodging with minor body shots for fun, but after only a few minutes he got bored. It was nothing personal against Leon, but dragging on fights was only fun when there was a challenge. One day this guy might become a challenge, but right now, he wasn't. The audience was also starting to get antsy, so now was a good time as ever to put an end to it. Just as Leon would attempt to overwhelm him, he took the smallest step to miss the punch, but stepped into the crashing wave instead of out of range. Once he was inside and there was no block, Percy let Leon have it. The punches came fast and furiously, like the finale of a holiday firework show. Uppercuts, gut shots, jabs, no matter which way Leon moved there was a hit waiting for him. The crowd was a mix of cheers from those winning bets and groans from the losers.

Once he was confident his opponent had had enough, he hopped back. Percy wasn't a cruel man, so he didn't want to actually hurt the guy, no more than it took to win the competition. Unlike others, he wasn't looking for broken bones, he just wanted to render his competition unable to continue the round as per the rules. "Good game," he said with a small smile, watching as the ref came out to end the match.

Step Into the Ring (Percy/Leon) Ul2vGlI

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

    PART 1: IN THE RING

And just like that, it was over. Every knuckle that rammed into his ribs, every bead of sweat, every shuffle and pivot—he felt all of them, but he never felt any of those quite as badly as the sound of that bell ringing in his ears and telling him that his fight was over. Telling him here, in Equal Grounds, he no longer belonged. He could feel his heart sink into the pit of his stomach as the aching began to rise on the parts of his body that had been slugged by his opponent. He leaned over and held his panting body up by holding onto his knees while standing, slowly lifting himself up so he was standing straight and his moist face, caked with sweat, was staring up at the blinding ceiling lights. He felt angry. There was no one else to blame but himself for what happened, but he was still angry. He wasn't a professional fighter and didn't want to be one, but this ring was one of the only things keeping his mind sound during his heartwrenching circumstances. He was sent away from home because of the abilities he wasn't born with, and now he was being sent away from one of the only forms of therapy he had because he wasn't good enough with the things he was born with. His heart wasn't in the right place, and he didn't come here because he was an entertainer or a fighting machine, and maybe that's why he lost. Hell, the guy he was fighting was just better than him, period. But even when he realized that when he closed his eyes and opened them again to face his opponent once he said 'good game'—he wanted to punch him.

"Yeah," he said quietly, already beginning to walk away from and exit the ring, "good game."
    . . . . . . . . .

About twenty minutes had passed since the end of the match, and Leon was starting to really feel those jabs on his body as his adrenaline wore off. He was aching all over, and he didn't make any stops to the clinic for a quick look-see for anything serious. It wasn't like any bones were broken, and he was walking well enough, so he was fine. He had work in a few hours anyway.

His exchange with his former pseudo-manager was brief, only giving one another small farewells as Leon was packing his stuff up in the shared gym inside Equal Grounds. He put on his grey hoodie from before, but his inky black hair was in full view, as was the scary, simmering look on his face. There were always other boxing rings, and it wasn't the end of the world. Feelings were only temporary, and wouldn't last forever. And yet, lately, it was starting to feel like they would. It had been a year since he was sent away from Bellum, and he had awaited the summon for returning home ever since. His family had been disappointed in him for his entire life, and everyone knew that he'd never amount to anything they wanted him to be, but they still gave him chances. Every time they were upset with his inability to do anything they wanted him to do, he made up for it with his talent for picking up other skills, and that satiated their expectations for a moment. Why would it be any different now? It was a little longer than usual, but they wouldn't leave him here to collect dust, would they?

Maybe they would, or maybe they wouldn't. At this point, Leon felt too lost to wonder. Today, it felt like he lost one of the pillars of his mental health through violent and precise strikes, and although he felt like punching something, he unfortunately wasn't allowed to use their gym anymore.

Tossing a pain cream of his own concoction in his hand as he walked, Percy made his way toward the Equal Grounds shared gym. It'd taken him a little longer than expected to get through all the congratulations from fans and the excessive thank yous to those who bet on him and won big. If there were any who were unhappy and thought they might do him harm because they lost money, Percy didn't see them. They probably tucked their tails and ran, though the Dagger boy wouldn't be surprised if one of his bodyguards had followed him here and was running interference. Percy loved to evade his highly-trained entourage as much as possible. Sometimes he just needed time to himself without it being reported on hourly, though he couldn't deny that they came in handy sometimes. Especially with paparazzi or crazed stalkers of the well-known family. Percy was sure he could handle most of it on his own, though, so he used his various techy means to slip away from them from time to time. How was he to have a real fight or explore some of the more dangerous places for magic info if they were always there to prevent him from taking risks?

Quietly opening the door, he spotted the taller man getting ready to leave. Unaware of the situation with his manager and that he was packing his stuff up for good, Percy just assumed he was getting ready to leave. "Hey," he called with a friendly wave, weaving his way around the various training equipment until he was within an acceptable conversing range. The inventor was more socially awkward outside of the ring, something he tried to progress through, but never quite got the feel for it. After a pause, he held out the cream. "I thought you might want to use some of this. I jabbed you pretty hard," he said with a crooked smile, not meaning it as any sort of tease or brag. "It takes some of the soreness away. I use it all the time," he added, beating around the bush. There was something more he wanted to say or ask, but he couldn't seem to quite get there yet. It was sort of a sudden thing to just throw out to a stranger you just defeated, or maybe it wasn't weird at all and Percy was just making it more complicated than it needed to be. "...You're pretty good!"

Step Into the Ring (Percy/Leon) Ul2vGlI

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

    PART 1: IN THE RING

The winner of the fight was the last person he expected to see approaching him after the fight, but there was, approaching him with that friendly wave of his. Leon looked at him, acknowledging that he was in fact that, but immediately went back to packing without a word to say to him. He'd continue to stuff things into his bag, cluttered like his mind until the two-toned man had held something out to him—a pain-relieving cream and a jeering comment to add salt to the wound. When he realized what it was, Leon suddenly stopped what he was doing and paused, shocked at what he just heard.

"I... wow. Just... wow..." Leon chuckled through his nose, although his eyes weren't smiling. So this is the kind of guy this man was? Did he come all this way to the shared gym, probably escaping all of his new fans and betters, just to taunt him? Leon had gotten the idea that this guy was confident during their fight, but this was on a whole different level of unsportsmanlike behavior. What's more, it was the last thing he wanted to hear right now. After the disbelief faded into irritation, Leon resumed packing his things and zipped his bag up, throwing it over his shoulders and standing up to face his former contender with a solid frown. "Clearly not good enough. Thanks for the offer, but I don't need it. Bye."

With everything packed, Leon stepped around the man and left the gym without any opportunity to extend the conversation. Hell, could you even call it that? Trash talking was to be expected when it's in the ring, but Leon had never been that close to picking a fight with someone outside of it. As thuggish as some of the other fighters were, most of them left Leon alone, and Leon left them alone. This encounter was certainly a first, and thankfully the last.

    Later That Week

A few days had passed since his final match at Equal Grounds, and Leon couldn't say that he was feeling any better about the loss of one of the few hobbies he had. What was left for him were his several part-time jobs that kept him busy for every day over the week but one day of the weekend. Neutral Grounds was the only place he could find reliable work for someone like him, who was magically inept and had no interest in taking jobs usually made out for sorcerers. But even now, loss of employment loomed over him. Leon worked hard and was disciplined, so that's why he was able to hold so many jobs without losing them, but as more full-time employees saturated the workplace, his hours were being cut more and more. It wasn't long before he was working too little to pay his rent, which he was only able to afford it all of his hours stayed exactly the same. Obviously, the situation was changing.

It was the late afternoon, and he was working at this local restaurant in the center of town as a waiter. The job wasn't bad, though sometimes he struggled to get tips with that intimidating face of it, he was friendly enough to manage. The building had large windows that overlooked a busy street in Neutral Grounds, letting the customers peer outside to watch the bustling crowd and everyone who was passing by to glimpse inside with absolute clarity. It was overall a nice spot, but nothing Leon grew personally attached to. After this, he had a night shift at a mechanic, working on vehicles that had issues. He wasn't trained to be a mechanic but taught himself the skills when he was a lot younger, so he could've gone professional if he really wanted to, but that wasn't the path laid out for him. He fully intended on returning to Bellum to enter a life of servitude, if only they'd summon him back.

Leon was cleaning the tables by the windows, his thoughts fogged with his working situation and what he needed to do about it. It was hard enough to find the jobs he already had, so finding more was a challenging idea. But did he really have a choice? It'd be even harder to find work he was confident he could do outside of Neutral Grounds when his competition were sorcerers who had the work cut out for them. He was just the working poor at this point, aimlessly picking up glasses and wiping down tables as his large figure loomed in the window.

That last exchange the two had had after the fight bothered Percy all week. At random times during his workdays it would pop up in his mind, where he'd puzzle and worry over it, wondering what it was he did that seemed to piss his opponent off so efficiently. He'd just been trying to help, break the ice with a nice offer so he could get to what he really had wanted to ask. Instead, Leon just acted like Percy'd kicked his puppy or something. Despite all Percy's intelligence, he simply couldn't put his finger on what he'd done wrong. This was why he kept to himself in his lab most of the time...or maybe this was because he spent most of his time in voluntary solitary confinement. Either way, it was clear that socializing with the general public was not the scientist's strong suit.

Back in the Neutral Grounds and freshly showered after another successful boxing match, Percy thought he'd catch a nice dinner before driving himself home. He had a favorite spot in town. It had the best view of all the restaurants in the magicless town, and as someone used to the finer things in life, a view especially when dining alone was preferred. As Percy arrived, still smelling of sandalwood shower gel and sporting a black dress shirt and pants combo, he spoke to the host and kindly requested a small table nearest the window. The Dagger son had been there enough that most of the staff was aware of him and the heavy coin purse he commanded, so in a flurry of activity, his chosen seat was readied for him and he was seated.

As he sat down and placed his phone on the table, the corner of his eye caught something familiar. A couple tables down, there was a tall man with dark hair cleaning off a table. While that could be anyone, from this angle he could clearly see the scars on the man's cheek. It was the face he'd been seeing for several days, reliving the moment he knew he'd somehow made a misstep. Perhaps this was his opportunity to set it right? Percy, despite his self-destructive recklessness and determination, was really a very kind and generous soul. "Oh hey, it's you," he said in slight shock, taking a moment to make sure it wasn't another of his worry visions. Sure enough, it appeared to be the real Leon. "I didn't know you worked here. I've never seen you here before," he noted aloud, wondering if he was a new hire or if he'd just visited during Leon's off hours. What a small world. Now if he could just not tick him off, maybe he could ask him if he'd like to train together.

Step Into the Ring (Percy/Leon) Ul2vGlI

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

    PART 2: TENSIONS

Leon was mindlessly cleaning the cluttered tables, gathering dishes that people left behind and the jewel bills placed in the center of it all. Some were neatly stacked and held down with jewel coins, and others were littered all over the table that you could easily mistake it for the napkins and silverware they had left there too. He could tell what high schoolers had come here based on the way the tables weren't pushed in and how dirty the tables were left, or what older gentlemen stopped by because his fellow waiters and waitresses were in chipper spirits. Sometimes he got people who didn't mind his looks—some were actually overtly fond of him—but most people didn't care for it and had the guts to be shitty about it. Obviously, his line was on the job, so he couldn't be as snappy as he wanted to be, and those were the kind that rarely tipped, and if they did tip, they were sure to deliver the message that it was out of pity. He wasn't the type to spit in their food but he could see himself living up to his thuggish image if he ever left this job, just for those kinds of customers. Of course, however, there were customers that didn't fit in any of those categories, and they were the kind he had never served before.

Sitting a few tables ahead of him, he could hear a stranger's familiar voice call out to him. It reeled him out of La-la-land, and his marigold eyes landed on a semi-redhead. Leon didn't even have to see his face to know who it was—and frankly, he couldn't remember his name, if he ever gave it. All he remembered was how much of a prick he was after the match had ended, and how he could recognize his vibrant hair from a mile away. There was nothing more irritating than finding him here while he was on his shift, and once looking and his coworkers for affirmation, they shrugged, a clear sign that he'd have to serve the guy. Instantly, Leon's inexpressive face hardened into a squint and frown, although it looked closer to glare with a face as sharp as his.

"Yeah, crazy how people can be in the same place at different times..." Leon placed his dish tray down and dusted his hands off one another, reaching into his pocket to grab a notepad and a pen as he approached the semi-redhead's table with the same unpleasant look on his frowning face. He spoke again in a tone that seemed empty and feigned, though convincing enough for anyone who wasn't aware of their previous encounter. "...That was a joke. If you haven't been served already, what can I do for you, sir?"

Oh, he already looked so upset! Two parts of Percy reacted. The competitive and aggressive side wanted to rise to it, mirror it. The more prevalent, softer side just recoiled and wanted to avoid the whole thing now. However, neither of these manifested on his neutral features, using his best Dagger business face o remain unruffled. The older Dagger men weren't big on emotional outbursts or anything that would make them seem weak or not in control. Or make them look bad in public.

Percy had definitely shown up in hopes of a nice meal, but that was entirely derailed now. This was his chance! If he was careful, he could make things right. He could tell Leon wasn't exactly pleased to see and deal with him, but he had to try anyway. Lacing his fingers in front of him, the young man leaned forward, meeting those terrifyingly intense eyes. "You can talk to me for a second," he answered, hopefulness blooming into his mismatched eyes. "I'm not sure what I said to make you angry back at the ring, but I apologize. I was just trying to be helpful. The ointment was-- Actually, that doesn't matter-- How have you been? I've been looking and I haven't seen you at the ring," Percy fumbled a little, trying his best to get the much more smooth words that had been in his head to come out. It didn't work, as was his usual issue. Socially adept, he was not. "I hope you didn't cause you to quit," he attempted a joke, hoping to break the ice. He didn't actually think someone like Leon would quit over the fight they'd had. He was really pretty good! That was the whole point of this, he wanted to mentor the man.

Step Into the Ring (Percy/Leon) Ul2vGlI

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

    PART 2: TENSIONS

Seriously? How shitty was this guy? It's like every time they ran into one another, he always said something that pissed Leon off even more. It was bad enough that seeing his face reminded him of Equal Grounds, but the douchebag just insisted on talking to him, like he didn't pick up any of the bad signals Leon was practically putting in his hand. It was even worse that he found out where he worked now, and Leon could only see his usually so-so working experience taking a turn for the worst considering how adamant this guy was on talking to him. He was a regular, wasn't he? So, Leon would probably end up seeing him more often now. Really, just great.

Leon loomed over the table with his notepad, waiting to take the man's order as he went on and on about their encounter at Equal Grounds, and Leon's forced smile was beginning to waver more and more. Leon was a lot of things, and patience just wasn't one of them. As the semi-redhead continued to walk over thin ice, Leon was practically shaking with anger. The more this guy talked, the more he wanted to sock him in the jaw, honestly. It all came to a boiling point once he joked about Leon "quitting", and it was at this point that he had to step away if he cared about his paycheck.

Snap! The pen Leon was so gingerly holding made a cracking sound all of a sudden, as his tightening grip finally caved in on the tool. Still, Leon continued to smile in the most unfriendly way possible.

"Very funny. Since you're not ordering, I need to get back to cleaning. If you need anything, just call for me. I'm all ears," Leon nodded before putting his notepad and broken pen away before going back over to the dish tray he was hauling from before. His words were to be expected from a waiter, nothing short of his job description, but it was clear by that fiery look in his eyes what he really meant—"Don't you dare call for me."

With that, he left. God, he needed a drink... and a punching bag.
