It had been an interesting few weeks. Joining a guild, let alone a dark guild had not been Maddox’s plan. But as she had mentioned to Temperance, her appearance and… unique way of speaking alongside her personality tended to mean it was harder for Maddox to network and maintain reliable contacts. But a guild would do that for her. Even with Elysium taking a cut of the profits, Maddox was making more money already. And with its utterly beautiful and enticing modus operandi, Maddox was more than happy to work with them and even remain loyal. After all, who would want to work with someone who constantly stabs others in the back? And the rewards were so sweet…

Anyways joining a guild, mostly the same guild as darling Temperance, wasn’t the worst idea she’s ever had. Mostly because, well, before joining she was kind of… homeless. She had places where she stored her pretties! But many of them were in hard-to-reach places, often not very livable as well. And while she wasn’t sure enough about the guild to store her precious pretties with them, and the guildhall wasn’t exactly beautiful, it was a good enough home for her for now. Even if she had to trek through the wastes for Sin to get to it…

Ok so maybe it wasn’t the most ideal home, but it worked. The part she liked was that it was permanent enough for her to actually set up a lab of sorts, instead of borrowing, ‘borrowing’, or paying to use another’s lab. She had just managed to… ‘acquire’ the pieces and get it shipped, and had it set up enough to start working on some of her magitek pieces. Her ‘lab’ of sorts was just off the busier sections of the hall, far enough away that any lab accidents wouldn’t disturb others, but close enough that if Maddox screamed out someone may come to investigate. She wasn’t so sure of that, this being a dark guild and all. But it was out in the open enough with only a half wall barricade granting what she was doing some privacy that anyone walking past could at least see her hunched over something.

And in this case, smell some fumes. They weren’t strong, Maddox had the more dangerous ones contained, but it still smelled a bit. Because while Maddox could and had built magitek weapons, chemistry was still on the new side for her. True she made the formulas for the remedies that went into her Good Intentions needle gun, but it was mostly based on others' work. Upgrading the remedies herself, or in this case, weaponizing it into an acidic poison was proving… difficult.

Cutting off another curse word, Maddox dumped the latest failed batch into her shadow space where she kept her gear and looked over her notes for the minor correction she hoped would fix the problem. It was no use. The acidic level was much to high and not only melted through the meat she was using to test the poison but ate through the flesh faster than she thought to the point of getting on her gloved hand. “It’s supposed to simulate the feeling of melted flesh, not actually melt it. Stupid formula, why can’t you just work for Maddox…?” She grumbled, then uttered few curse words as she got a cloth to get the poison off her glove.  Her notes were thankfully spread out behind her, safe from the unintended blast zone. So much of her fighting style revolved around sneak attack and phycological warfare that having such poisons was starting to get more and more necessary. But chemistry was not something she had much chance to research, and it obviously couldn’t be learned through trial and error like magitek engineering. Maybe it was time to rob a library….

It had been some time once again since the recent few major events in Faustein's life. The first was the encounter with the immortal woman named "Teresa" and the associated doctor's appointment she had come to him for back then. The other was the series of Christmas seasonal festivities that he had the chance to participate in with the aforementioned woman some time after that doctor's appointment. In the time that followed said festivities, Faustein had gotten back to the grind of his daily routine, both that of a professional physician-scientist mage as well as his life's one true love which was his ongoing, ever burgeoning mad science research.

Thus, he had not really noticed that the guild had recently acquired some new faces in its ranks, or as Elysium liked to call them, "fresh meat". However, today would change all that, but he just didn't realize it yet as he was currently engrossed in one among many of his own insane mad science projects, with this one causing the more faint-hearted of his guildmates to avoid his quarters like the plague for fear of injury, death, or worse.

"Lets see here, if I were to install a bypass valve here, would that alleviate the problem of power blockade? Hmm..."

He was muttering to himself as per one of his usual "deep in thought" mannerisms thus when, all of a sudden, his trained olfactory sensors (i.e. his nose) picked up the presence of something that was all too familiar to him given his...unique research interests. That something was, of course, the pungent bite of acrid fumes that were no doubt due to some chemical travesty being concocted somewhere nearby by person or persons as yet unknown to him. Naturally, this caught his interest since he realized immediately what the creator was attempting to do with the chemicals. So, intrigued as he was by this discovery, he decided to drag himself out of his lab for the first time in a long while and track down the epicenter of this debacle in progress. It did not take him long to find it and when he did, he noticed what seemed to be a medieval plague doctor-like entity hunched over a table, currently working with whatever was giving off those fumes. As was to be expected, their notes were scattered behind them

"My my, what have we here? Another fellow mad scientist in our ranks? This is a surprise indeed. Are you have trouble getting the pH of your acidic poison calibrated correctly, perchance? I surmise that it was only supposed to give the impression of melted flesh, but in this case it has actually melted through it and that means it's a failure, milady."

He addressed the person in his usual rich baritone but mellifluous voice and with his trademark arrogant, smug smirk clearly visible on his thin, cyanotic lips. As per usual, he had his physician-scientist's outfit on aka his formal white shirt and red tie above with dark formal pants below along with his favorite patent leather shoes. Over his shirt was his signature long, faded white lab coat with its pockets full of various scientific tools poking out here and there and with multiple splotches of pigment and other signs of damage; both physical, chemical, and magical, apparent to the astute observer. His hands were covered with his usual surgical gloves and finally his brilliant amber yellow eyes were currently shielded from view by his smart holographic magitek lenses. His magitek spacetime chronograph was hidden beneath the frayed sleeve of his lab coat on his left wrist as per usual as well.

After he spoke, he fell silent and waited for the person to notice and respond if at all. While waiting, he began a surreptitious analysis of the person before him and from the magic signature, he could tell it was a woman, despite it not seeming that way from their attire.

Well, the rag was ruined, but hopefully, the glove could still be saved. So investing in her scrubbing that she didn’t notice someone walk up behind her. The words penetrated Maddox’s mind, she heard and processed them but didn’t realize for some reason it was actually someone speaking. So of course, it took a while for her to notice. Her shoulders tensed suddenly and with a scream of startled terror she whirled around toward the speaker, a beaker stirrer pointed at the man like a sword, almost hitting his nose. Gasping for breath for a moment, her heart pounding in her rapidly falling and rising chest, she sized the man up. He looked… normal. Suspiciously so for someone inside the hall of a dark guild. Normal lab coat, clothes, and a normal (if on the handsome side) appearance. The objects he carried seemed more unique at least, she could see magitek on his glasses and on his tools, not unlike some of her own. No, his were more advanced. Maybe a guild researcher? Did Elysium have those?

The silence had worn on during her once over of the man, to the point of awkwardness. It gave Maddox time to push her startled fear down, only give rise to an annoyed anger. “W-what do you think you are doing, startling poor Maddox!” She sputtered out in her deep musical voice, lowering her ‘weapon’ while she did so. Then she blinked a little and re-processed his words. Then frowned (not that he could see that). With a growl, Maddox exclaims “What?! We are not mad, no matter what some may say! Indeed, Maddox here is offended but such claims! Hump!” She finishes snootily, turning her head to the side. Then side-eyes the mysterious man. Grrr… but he was right about her formula. How the hell did get to guess that? Ah. Her notes. He must have been snooping for quite a while to read enough of her notes to figure out what she was doing. “Yes, Maddox is a new member of Elysium. We dabble in magitek when we can, to help our Requip magic.” She says, gesturing over her right eye to temporarily banish the glass there, just enough for the guild symbol to shine from her pupil, before returning the glass. “The next time you want to snoop about Maddox’s notes please warn us first…. And yes, that is the result we are attempting to achieve.” She finishes with gritted teeth. “Maddox doesn’t suppose you have any better idea from what you snooped, hmmm Mr. Labcoat?” She says snootily. She had only been working on this batch for a little while, so surely, he wouldn’t have had the time to read enough of her notes to figure out the process, let alone the solution.

Faustein let out his usual rumbling chuckle when he witnessed the highly amusing reaction that the woman he now knew to be called Maddox displayed to his sudden approach and accosting. His amusement only grew in intensity when he saw how Maddox had pointed her beaker stirrer at him as though it were a sword, and that caused his smirk to grow wider than before. However, since she seemes to go off on a brief tirade, he let her have her say before reacting to it. First, he put up bith hands with his palms facing her in a gesture of surrender or peace

"I prithee, stay thine hand and quell thine anger, for I come in peace and I do apologize wholeheartedly for startling thee. Now then, if I may inquire, why use such antiquated technology as a simple manual beaker stirrer? Surely, you have heard of magnetic stir bars before. They are a much more efficient means of stirring solutions, you know...especially considering they automate the mixing process."

Then, he moved on to addressing her other remarks, still with his smirk displaying his amusement clearly to her

"Furthermore, you do so intrigue me, milady. Therefore, I shall grant you my name in return for yours. You may call me Dr. Stein or simply as Faust depending on whichever be to your fancy, of course. As to your not being a mad scientist of the most superlative caliber, I must say, that third person narrative manner of speech in tandem with your experiments I can see behind you and your exotic attire ensemble beg to differ, I am afraid."

He paused to see whether she was keeping up with him verbally and then continued

"Moving on, if no one has already, let me the first to welcome you to our ranks, but just out of curiosity, what would you say to being my guin...er I mean my research assistant? I feel that my magitek research could benefit greatly from your expertise. In honor of equivalent exchange, I could share my alchemical research with you which may just be what you need to advance your chemical experiments forward."

Lastly, he turned his attention to her accusation that he was snooping about by reading her notes and her query about a possible solution to her problem

"I assure you, you are completely wrong about your assumption here. You see, I never even glanced at your notes, let alone perusing them in depth. All I needed to pronounce my judgment was a brief olfactory analysis of the fumes that your concoction was emanating to know the problem which has you troubled thusly. On another note though, I am flattered that you think me handsome, but I am merely average in the appearance department."

With that, he paused again and decided to out on a brief show for her just to see how she would react to it. To that end, he activated one of his favorite abilities, namely his "Hyper-elastic Physique" which allowed him to subsequently extend his upper limbs all the way over to her table behind her while circumventing her. Then, he picked up the beaker with the concoction, withdrew his elastic arms back to their original length and then took a few sips of the liquid inside the beaker. Initially, nothing happened, but several moments afterwards, his abdomen expanded almost comically and he was forced to tilt his head up and let out a loud belch which let a series of poison green smoke rings out of his mouth and into the air. As if that were not enough, his throat and abdominal region actually started to melt after returning to normal size, revealing his cyborg viscera inside. Now, a normal person would have been quite perturbed by this and would most likely have died from it, but thanks to his immortality he did not suffer such a fate. Instead, he merely looked down at his now exposed viscera and the gaping melted hole in his throat and stomach, and then looked at Maddox while remarking

"Well now, this is a pretty little pickle. This is quite the potent mixture you have here...and indelibly delicious tasting too."

He paused there to fix his appearance so as to not alarm her. For that purpose, he activated get another of his favorite spells, this one being called "Healing Ecdysis" and that allowed him to open his mouth alarmingly wide, like a snake would, and then, right in front if her eyes, he crawled out of the mouth of his old, damaged body which was acting as a shell and stepped out onto the ground, at which time the shell disintegrated to dust. Amazingly, he now looked as good as new, with not a scratch on him and his previous injury nowhere to be seen as it was healed completely. Then, he brushed himself off and continued speaking as if nothing had happened just now

"Regarding the solution to your chemical conundrum, I would say that you are missing a powerful psychedelic agent and the addition of a base like sodium hydroxide would work to restore the pH some and neutralize some of that acidity. Aside from that, perhaps the addition of a magic infused buffer solution would be necessary to regulate the pH further which would then allow you to alter the pH as and when necessary, depending on your target's nature."

After that, he fell silent and waited to see what Maddox would do and say in response to his actions and words.

… The hell? Was he mocking Maddox with flowery speech now? And so what if she only had subpar equipment, she didn’t have time to steal top-grade stuff, let alone move it all the way to Sin-forsaken know where! Gods, she wanted to punch the smug look off his stupid face already and he had only spoken a few sentences! Her body leaned forward, shoulder high and tense, arms ramrod straight beside her, tensed in anger. One fist clenched the aforementioned stirring stick, the other hand gripped the ruined rag.

Then visibly spluttered. “It is of no business of yours as to why Maddox uses what we do for our experiments! And more importantly, the way we speak is stylish and full of personality! It is in no way related to madness!... Not that you would probably know much about style.” She says with a huff and is probably ignored. Also was his name Stein, or Faust? Which were a surname and first name? Or maybe one was an alias? And he was a doctor of some sort, huh. Then she listened to his next words, her back and shoulders stooped forward, head tilted so one goggled eye appeared to gaze at him. This was Maddox’s equivalent of a raised eyebrow and giving the vibe of exasperation. One had to be creative in body langue if they couldn’t portray expression. “Yeeeeees ‘research assistant’ of course. Has anyone ever told you darling that you are wonderful at convincing people? Because if they did, they would be lying.” Maddox tells the man, sarcasm and sass clear in her voice. “Maddox will have to decline your generous offer.”

Then after listening to his next explanation, all Maddox could do was radiate disbelief. Did he really expect her to believe that he got all of the details of her formula simply from smelling? Absurd. He was just trying to show off and probably impress her so she could be convinced to show more of her research. Maddox wasn’t a fool; this man would get nothing from her. She was about to verbalize this when she flinched back and the sudden… extending of his limbs? Ok, so while that was a bit gross to see, it did confirm that he was a mage or some magical being of sorts. Then she twitched in protest when she noticed him grabbing her chemical mixture, but didn’t really try to stop him. It was a failure after all- WAIT WHAT WAS HE DOING?!

“Fool!! That is a highly acidic mixture you said it yourself WHY WOULD YOU DRINK IT-?! Oh, that is disgusting.” Maddox screamed after being shocked into silence for a few moments after he drank it. Then recoiled in disgust at the blech, her snobbish tastes getting the better of her. Then took a step back in surprise as the man's torse appeared to be melting. She immediately summoned her needle gun Good Intentions, intending to shoot a remedy into him though with that amount of damage she doubts it would have helped. But at least when asked why she let a guildmate drink her acidic poison and die she could claim she tried to save him and hopefully not get kicked out. But she was a bit distracted by how unnervingly calm the man was acting about his throat and stomach being melting alive- oh. Well, her needle gun probably wouldn’t have been much use anyway, if he was a cyborg. Or a pure robot? Lowering the needle gun Maddox actually bent over to view the revealed parts in more detail. “Oooooh, interesting.” She murmured. My oh my, that was some advanced magitek there. Maddox was jealous. She spent so much money replacing her clothes and protecting her pretties that she couldn’t afford such nice tech. Unless she stole it. If this Stein man was actually a robot, maybe Maddox could find his creator and ask to take a looks at him or another like him? Probably not, most inventors at that level would probably want to keep their methods a secret.

At the man’s comment about her mixture tasting good, she hoped her upward tilt of her face to portray a deadpan look. “Yes Dr. Foolstien, that is the important part of this mixture. The taste. Now how exactly are you going to repair yourself, because if you think Maddox is going to do if for you because it was our mixture, you’d best stuff yourself- oh. What.” Maddox finishes, comedically scuttling backwards without moving the rest of her body at all after glancing at what he was doing. Then watched in abject horror as he appeared to shed his skin like some sort of demented humanoid snake. While technically Maddox had no right to judge someone else’s appearance, that literally never stopped her. Her body cringed backwards with one shoulder facing him, arms bent towards her face, hands angled down in the universal body language of great disgust. “Not beautiful. Not beautiful in the least. Ugh.” She commented. Then went back to the deadpan look she had before at his critique of her work. Then after mulling it over for a moment, with great reluctance, no UTMOST reluctance, she had to admit that was a semi-decent next step to take. Not that she would admit that to him.

“Was drinking it necessary or were you simply being dramatic? Next time when you want to shed your skin please do away from our fabulous self. The travesty of that almost made us faint, darling, really-.” The long tirade of how much her sensibilities were offended was cut short by a sizzling noise, then a hiss of pain. She forgot about the rag clutched in one hand, and the fact it was soaked in the acidic poison. It was diluted, but after squeezing it so much it seemed to have finally eaten through her glove. “Gods damn it.” She cursed, throwing the rag to the stone floor, forgetting the man was there for a moment. Shit, the chemical was reacting oddly to her skin condition and the leather of the glove had already semi-merged with her constantly healing and degrading cells. The smell of her skin was probably already in the air.

“Maddox thanks you for your… aid, Dr. Stein. Now you may leave.” She said through gritted teeth. This would be painful; she would have to dig the leather away from her skin manually with her off-hand. Like hell she would ask for help, she utterly hated anyone to see her skin condition, let alone some weirdo. Even if he was an interesting specimen of magitek and kind of good at alchemy/chemistry.

Faustein thoroughly enjoyed Maddox's reaction to his little display of magic and had to actually struggle to keep his inscrutable demeanor and expression intact throughout it all. So, he let her have her say and once she was done, he remarked

"Now now, no need to be so alarmed, my precious. This is merely a parlor trick, nothing more."

He thus made a show of reassuring her, but the entire time he was doing so, he could not help but have his smug smirk getting wider and wider till he was basically smirking from ear to ear at the hilarity of the situation. Then, he went on to address her apparent interest in his anatomy

"Mine is an intriguing anatomy, is it not? I completely understand why you'd be fascinated with it. It really is quite remarkably designed, I will admit readily. Who knows? Maybe we can make a deal then. If you agree to become my guin...I mean research assistant, there could be some discussion about possible information and technological exchange between us..."

After that, he finished by refusing her demand to leave and instead turned the tables on her, especially after he saw how painful her wounds looked, especially with their appearance

"Oh no, this will not do at all. I cannot have one of my precious ones getting hurt, the researcher in me simply will not allow it. Besides that, as a physician, it would be detestable of me to merely stand by and not assist you. So, off we go to my lab and there, we shall see about treating your wound."

Of course, to the casual listener, his words would have seemed like genuine worry and caring, but in reality, he was merely not wanting to lose the opportunity to examine a unique specimen such as Maddox and he was simply using her wound and the glove having fused into it as an excuse to get her over to his lab so he could then do some research on her. With that in mind, he wasted no time in grasping Maddox by her intact wrist and hand and then used his "Xenosomectomy" spell to teleport them both over to his lab in an instant, without bothering to wait for her response as he knew she would probably deny him her acquiescence.

If you did it just to show off, make it less disturbing! Was Maddox’s angry inner remark at his whole snake shedding episode. If she was in less pain and less emotional, she would have been able to see that he probably used similar phycological tactics as she did, to a much more extreme and less beautiful effect. Unfortunately, she was both angry and in pain, thus didn’t give a crap. Maddox fumed at his apparent disregard of her instructions and didn’t bother to answer his query of being his ‘assistant’ either. She had already given the man her answer.

“Do stop it with the creepy nicknames! You sound like an obsessive gremlin!” Maddox protests to the man continuing to refer to her as ‘precious’. His urging to let him heal was never going to work, despite the kind way he put it. For one, despite just meeting the man she already knew to take any ‘kindness he offered with a grain of salt. He screamed condescending mad scientist (and even admitted to that title!!) and who the hell would want to be taken care of by one of those? Also, this was a dark guild. Maddox had the right to be suspicious of a fellow ‘guildmate’. It was a basic self-preservation. Lastly, even if he were a trustworthy physician Maddox would still refuse since it would be exposing her skin disease, something she was loathed to do.

But that internal rant did not matter when with speed faster than she could see, the man grasped her uninjured wrist, and in a pull of magic, found herself in another location. One filled with technology. She would have found it impressive if she wasn’t angry enough to pull off the man's robotic arms and beat him to death with them. “What the hell do you think you are doing!? Maddox is not luggage you ghastly brute! Do you know how rude it is to teleport someone without consent?! Do you? DO YOU?! Return Maddox to their lab at once! We will not consent to any ‘treatment’ of yours, no we will not! Quack! Rouge! Villain! Maddox can take care of themselves you utter-!” But it seemed Faust had grown bored of listening to her rant and had simply grabbed her by the hips and thrown her over his shoulder. After a moment of shocked silence of her part at the speed and surprising gentleness of it, she started the scream “WHAT ARE YOU DOING PUT MADDOX DOWN THIS INSTANT FOOLSTEIN!” Followed by an actual long scream of rage and frustration, several blows with her good arm to his back and kicks at his ribs. All completely ineffectual. It was probably a good thing Maddox was terrible at using magic while flustered, or else things might have gotten destroyed.

By the time they got to wherever they were going, Maddox was more pouting than actually fighting. The man had gently deposited her on an operating table, but Maddox was still acting stubborn. She turns her head away and refused to acknowledge him, and hid away her injured hand under an armpit, despite the pain it brought her.

Faustein had quite a lot of fun as he transported his new BFF Maddox to his lab for treatment of that injury he saw she had sustained due to her experiment, namely the one wherein her glove had melted and fused with her hand's skin...or whatever he could see of it anyway. He let her have her little pouting session and even though she was kicking and punching him all over, it had felt like more of a massage than actual remonstrance since his body was organometallic in nature from head to toe and thus, was not affected by such a weak degree of physical violence. Of course, he would have said something, but she had not let him get a word in edgewise, so he chose to remain silent. Finally, when they reached his lab, he laid her gently on the operating table and to his further amusement, she had turned her face away from him

"You really are quite the adorable little specimen, you know that? Now please, show me that hand so we can begin the operation, won't you, my precious?"

Naturally, he did not get any response from her other than further, loud protests about his treatment of her and complaints about his nickname for her. So, it took him a while, but eventually he managed to somehow coax and cajole her into revealing her injured hand. Once that was done, he first started by examining the extent of the damage, which was not too severe, but from how pained her visage seemed to be, it was obviously a source of great pain for her, despite her attempts to hide it from him. So, he resolved himself to heal at least that injury if nothing else. To that end, next he took up a syringe filled with a potent, custom-made local anesthetic and injected it into one of the more easily accessible veins that he could see on the dorsal aspect of her hand where the glove had been fused to it after which he waited for it to take effect. Then, he tested her sensations on said hand to ensure she would not feel pain when he began his procedure.

Lastly, after he was sure she would not feel the pain, he took up a sterilized scalpel and physically cut out the pieces of the glove until there was nothing left of it attached to her hand after which he used his "Bottle of Magic Bubbles" item to cover her hand with healing bubbles which were successful in healing the surgical wounds he had made with the scalpel, albeit at a slow pace due to their healing being only of a small degree. At last, after several more rounds of protest and pouting from her, he had finished treating her injury, bandaged it up and then teleported her back to her own quarters before bidding her a fond adieu and even kissing the back of the same hand he had just healed with his usual smug smirk on his thin lips and then returned to his own lair, thoroughly looking forward to the next amusing adventure he would undoubtedly have with her.

Maddox struggled. Maddox yelled. Maddox groaned. Maddox griped. But still, this gawp of a man was insisting on healing her. The deep paranoid part of her didn’t want him to see her skin, to judge the state her body was in like many who saw it had. Like she does. After all, for one who values beauty as much as she did, isn’t it the greatest shame that her own body didn’t hold anywhere near her standards? Also dark mage in a dark guild. Pure logical survival instinct.

But in the end, she had to admire his perseverance, and that burn was starting to hurt. Well, it was a mix of a burn and her deplorable skin melded into the glove. So, in the end, after a bit more grumbling to show that he was not the boss of her and that she didn’t owe him anything for this. She let him heal her. She kept a very close eye on what he was doing of course but his work was… satisfactory. Especially since she didn’t even give him an inch in cooperation, blew up again at his creepy nicknames, and refused to thank him in the moment’s before teleporting her away (how the hell did he know where she slept? Creeper).

But. Well. His brief company, compared to the likes of Crowlee or other stupid guildmates was… satisfactory. She would most likely visit him again. If only to scream at him for being a creepy stalker and to try to trick some secrets out of him. No other reason of course.
