    [Dungeon/Percy/Kyran/Leon] The Snake Maiden LnzpEHa

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

About a month ago, if you had told Leon that he'd end up fighting dangerous creatures in order to solve Fiore's more problematic issues that ran rampant through the country, he probably wouldn't have believed it. But even more, that he'd be working as the assistant to none other than Percy of the Dagger family? He'd brush it off as a joke, but it wasn't a joke, and this was his life right now.

Sand dunes rose and fell across the barren horizon, the noon sun scorching their skin with heat, small armadillo-bears scavenging the desert, and monkey-vultures picking away at corpses that were nothing more than skin and bones. The Forgotten Deserts was a large and expansive territory, a place where no one came unless they had to. But who could blame them? The days were blisteringly hot and the nights' coolness was second only to the Silent Glaciers. The monsters that managed to inhabit the wasteland were large and dangerous, and oases were few and far between. There were few villages here, so getting lost was probably a wanderer's worst nightmare. Fortunately, that wasn't the case today.

Together in the Forgotten Deserts were three men: Leon, Percy, and another fellow which Leon didn't know, but apparently, Percy did. If he recalled correctly, they were guildmates, weren't they? Or that was at least what he got from what Percy had told them about the investigation today. They were here to "deal with" some sort of Snake Lady that had been causing up a stir as of late. She lured wanderers into her midst and killed them without a second thought, or maimed them enough to let them leave wishing they had died right there. It was the latter few who had spread the tale and gave a rough area in which anyone interested in pacifying the Maiden could find her lurking.

"Leon," he introduced himself stiffly, his deep voice matching the menacing look of his appearance as he offered a handshake with the stranger. He had relatively short, charcoal black hair—although it was beginning to grow longer—and eyes that looked like he was about to murder whoever he was staring at. If his thuggish and glaring face didn't seal the deal for strangers, the scars stretching diagonally across the left half of his face surely would. He was a big man—bigger than the two that were accompanying him—with an intimidating air surrounding him. Although he did lack patience and was an overall intense man, he was far from the image that people held of him. "Nice to meet you."

Leon had only worn a navy-green tank top with him today, soot-black cargo pants, the only pair of combat boots he owned, and some technology that he was supposed to be testing out today. They were arm canons, but surprisingly light and easy to carry around. Obviously, he didn't know how well his impressions would hold up in combat just yet, but this was his first time being put to use. Even still, he underestimated the heat, sweating as he pondered whether or not he should wait to find the Maiden to cool down. What good was the tank top anyway? He probably should've brought something protective... or something. Then again, he didn't own anything effective like that.

The blazing sun pierced Kyran's brain. The burning sand seemed to seep heat through the soles of his leather boots. All around him dunes rose, obscuring the horizon. Add the copious amounts of alchohol he'd consumed, Kyran could swear he was in hell. Why was he out here again? Oh right, the Ace of Meliora Vitae had asked him along. 'More like he felt sorry for your sodden carcass and dragged you off the Endeavor.' The redhead surpressed a scowl. The rumors of the Sorcerer's Magazine had kicked off an avalanche of letters. He had good reason to drink.

His companions distracted him from explaining that to Eae again. Percy had expensive clothing on and duel hair color. He tried to wrap his head around that one. 'I wonder if the carpet matches the drapes or if its one uniform color.' Kyran wished he had a drink in his hand. He wanted to drink away the image that conjured up. Malinda laughed as she wound her way through his mind. The slayer could have sworn she licked her lips too. The other male looked like a thug.

Speaking of the other male, he was introducing himself. Kyran held out his right hand for the handshake. The mangled middle finger and ring finger could barely curl. Kyran was still working on full functionality. "Kyran. Likewise." He extended a modicum of magic to cool Leon off once he noticed the other man sweating heavily. Kyran had gotten so used to regulating the atmosphere around him, he forgotten others couldn't do it too. He extended the same courtesy to Percy.

"How are we going to find the snake lady?" He asked. Eae screamed in frustration but the other demons kept her from speaking. Erebus started laughing. It seemed there was something the redhead was forgetting.

While his guildmate and his assistant got acquainted, Percy attacked his severe-looking assistant with aerosol sunblock, not so much asking beforehand. He'd already sprayed himself for the second time since they arrived in the scorching, unforgivable landscape. This only reinforced his assumption that he never wanted to visit Desierto. Well, not unless he brought an enclosed vehicle that could easily zoom over the sand. Actually, why hadn't he thought of that before they came out here? He had the perfect vehicle back in his lab. All he'd had to do was fit it with tank-like belts in place of its tires and they probably would meet his maiden already, minus the risk of sunburn. Percy's skin was pale and sensitive... It was too hot. He was sweating too, much too used to air conditioning. However, with the tickle of magic on his skin, he felt a wave of coolness. So nice! He nodded his thanks to Kyran.

Instead of the machine back at the lab, he'd brought two motorbikes for them to use. They were currently folded up into compact boxes on his back, which he was just now taking off and pressing buttons on to expand them. Soon there were two full-sized vehicles with spiked wheels ready to fly across the sands. Why were there two when there were three people present? Well, they had a second seat, and someone had to be the navigator. Speaking of, he produced one of his patented pieces of technology in the form of a holographic map. It already had the location he suspected the snake woman to be marked. Percy always came prepared when it came to navigating, since he had zero sense of direction.

Kyran, who he noted smelled heavily of booze, asked how they'd find their target for the day. "Well, since it's hot-- AH-CHOOO!" His explanation was interrupted immediately with a violent sneeze, finding his nose was now clogged and his chest felt weird. Allergies again? Even out in the desert? There wasn't even any pollen here unless he was allergic to cacti... Wiping his nose with a handkerchief, he coughed a couple times and tried to continue his explanation. "It's hot, and she's a cold-blooded creature. She might sunbathe when she needs to, but she'll need to keep close to her lair, which will need shade. There's a series of caves to the southwest," he explained, sniffling as if he had a cold. Percy didn't feel too great now, and for a moment he wondered if they should abort the mission. If he was having an allergic reaction and Kyran smelled like he'd ingested an entire bar (Perc had sworn off alcohol since a certain night, it might not be the best time. Then again...they were already here. He tossed the keys to one of the bikes to Key.

Turning to Leon, he held up the keys to the other bike in one hand and the map in the other. "Drive or directions?"

    [Dungeon/Percy/Kyran/Leon] The Snake Maiden LnzpEHa

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

Leon had stood there, sweat running down his body as he stood there roasting in the Forgotten Desert sunshine. If the air wasn't so dry and hot, Leon might've enjoyed the heat as he wasn't particularly bad with handling it, but there was no need for that. Without warning, Percy had smothered him in a spray of sunblock, sending a flinching chill over Leon's body from the surprise. Even more, the man who had introduced himself as Kyran sent a modicum of magic over both of them, reducing their body temperatures to a comfortable level.

Leon didn't say anything when he received the magical gesture, but if he had the opportunity, he would have rejected it. His magical ineptitude was the reason he was in this situation, and it was also the reason he had such a tormented and difficult childhood. Everything was always such an uphill battle for Leon whereas sorcerers could easily coast through all the challenges that impeded his way. Call it jealousy, envy, or whatever else—all Leon knew was that he had a distaste for magic and, by association, sorcerers.

Now that he thought about it, his name was... Kyran, right? He recalled reading about someone named Kyran in one of those popular magazines (they gave them out for free at his jobs), and how he was suspected of the murder of some former bigshot trading company. There was the picture of an emblem and a man with bright orangish-red hair in between. Was he that Kyran?

The question lingered in his head as Percy prepared the vehicles that they'd be using. They were originally folded into compact boxes that could fit on someone's backside, but as they unraveled, they formed two complete motorbikes equipped with everything they needed to quickly traverse the Forgotten Deserts. There were a holographic map and other gadgets of technology beyond Leon's current comprehension, but all of it surprised him. Ever since he found out about Percy's bright mind, Leon was impressed with everything he created. Even though he was a quick learner, he obviously couldn't contribute anything of value to his research and projects, but seeing his work and being a sort of guinea pig for it was a reward in itself. How could Percy have possibly compacted two full-sized vehicles in such a portable way? How was that even possible? Leon didn't know, but Percy did, and that was what made him so eager. Plus, he also just happened to really like motorbikes.

"Drive." Leon eagerly grabbed the keys, almost cutting Percy off with how quickly he responded. His eyes widened fractionally as he tried to suppress his excitement from showing, although it just ended up in him frowning with a twinkle in his eyes. Percy, on the other hand, was sniffling as if he had come down with something. This was awfully strange considering where they were and how dry the air was, so what exactly was making his nose so runny? Did he actually come down with something before they came here? Leon paused for a moment to stare at him before he went over to the empty motorbike, stepping over onto the seat and effortlessly sliding the key into the ignition. It greeted him with a quiet rumble, the engine growling mildly as they waited.

His eyes glimpsed back over to Kyran now that the roles had been divvied up, wondering about that magazine column again. Leon didn't know the guy for more than five minutes, so he couldn't form an opinion on it all, but what's with his luck in meeting affluent people recently? Was Percy's coaterie just a bunch of rich people, or people who come from some sort of money? He could smell the alcohol off of him from here, too...

Kyran looked uncomfortable as Percy tossed him the keys to the motorbike. Wishing you'd taken the time to learn? Erebus teased. The shadow raked his nails across Kyran's mind. Just as an act of spite, Kyran was sure. He swallowed hard. "I can't drive." The redhead said simply, holding the keys out. "I didn't get to learn... in my youth and walking is easier now. I can fly or use a summons to keep up if you wish but I fear driving would lead to an accident." Did drinking make him speak more? And why had he slipped into such a formal tone of apology?

The redhead carefully handed the keys to Percy. He might have kids but no one liked getting sneezed on. Kyran subtly altered his spell. The cool atmosphere around Percy now filtered out any allergens. Ducarius needed a similar spell for certain kinds of pollen. Otherwise he broke out into terrible hives. That had been a fright until they figured it out. If it wasn't in the air, perhaps the sun was causing Percy issue. The Ace did act as the chief engineer aboard the Endeavor. Kyran doubted he saw much of the glowing yellow orb and here there was an abundance of it.

The redhead peered at the map now, fascinated by it. The hologram seemed like something out of a storybook. Perhaps that was Percy's magic. Unless he didn't have magic. There were those deprived of such things as he had been as a child. In which case, this was an invention. Stupid. Breakable. Hunt. Hunt now! Ahriman howled in his head. Kyran placed to fingers to his temple, wincing. His eyes briefly transformed, becoming entirely red and glowing. It took a moment to force the wolf back down.

A low rumble touched his ears. Drink really slowed his mind. Dangerous on a mission like this. Kyran looked over to Leon. The other mage looked ready to go. The redhead inclined his head in apology. It was his fault they weren't already on their way. "I'll follow the two of you from the air." Wings burst from the back of his duster. A few flaps dragged the redhead upward. Looking southwest, he noticed more sand dunes. The dunes eventually broke upon a protrusion of rock some distance away. Thier destination? Could he... His mind fuzzed a bit, and his flying became wobbly. Better not explore. Following a big roaring contraption might be the extent of his abilities at the moment.

"Ah, I see," Percy nodded, taking the keys back and altering his plan. He could drive and look at the map at the same time. "Seems both of us will get to drive," he grinned over at Leon, tempted to make it a race. He probably would have if Kyran hadn't been present. It amused him how excited his assistant got over the prospect of driving, but he felt about the same. Percy loved driving and it seemed such a shame to not be able to do so. Then again, he had no magic to make up for the common skill.

Straddling his own bike, he sniffled and watched Kyran take to the air with awe, though there was also plenty of concern registering as he watched the wobbling. He had no reason to think Kyran wasn't more than capable of controlling his abilities, so it had to be the drink he smelled on him. Maybe Percy shouldn't have asked him on this mission. Maybe he should have sent him home once he suspected he might be under the influence. Then again, other than the smell, he wasn't sure. Percy was a little new to this type of leadership, so he sincerely hoped this wouldn't bite him in the butt later.

Accepting things as they were, he started his bike and revved the engine before taking off across the scorching sands. His snuffy nose was starting to cause him a headache, and all the coughing was bringing on a sore throat, but it wasn't anything he couldn't handle. He easily navigated the small team across the dunes at a swift pace, heading right for the rocky area on the map. Not even an hour later, Percy was leading them through a crevice in two tall rocks which served as the mouth for a cave system. Once they came face to face with the yawning opening of a cave, Percy put on the brakes and got off. He turned off the motor but didn't fold the bike back up just in case they needed to leave in a hurry.

"Alright, we're here," he said, touching his fingers to places in the hologram that served as buttons. It altered the picture it showed to reveal the cave and its tunnels ahead. It'd leave a dotted line where they had come from, so they'd know their way back. "Given this heat, she should be deep inside where it's cool. There's a wider, flatter opening if we take the left tunnel about 200 feet inside. We should keep an eye out for other threats as we go, and watch each others' backs once we find her," he suggested, his injection device hanging on his side and ready to go. Percy was sure he'd need it on this job, though he'd yet to use it in the field. "Are you guys ready?"

"Yeah, looks like it," Leon smirked back. He wanted more than to rev the engine and see how fast and far these motorbikes could really go. With such an open space, the field day he had dancing in the back of his mind was possible. But he cast the thought aside and held back. He had to take this seriously.

Kyran on the other hand rejected the role of driver altogether out of fear of causing an accident, but judging by the way he was acting, Leon thought he'd be more likely to crash it because he had been drinking more than his actual inability to drive at all. The gossip aside, Leon's impression of him wasn't very good right now. If anything, he seemed like two drinks away from being the drunk that was tagging along. It was annoying, but it wasn't like Leon was in any position to be too critical. After all, he was just tagging along with Percy as his assistant.

    . . . . . . . . .

They arrived at the yawning opening of a cave where the Snake Maiden would likely be after a little driving through desert wastelands, greeted with the coolness of the stone features against the desert's broiling heat. The light disappeared after only about a dozen meters into the mouth of the crevice, dimly showing the beginning of tiny tunnels that stretched out. When Percy explained that there was a much wider tunnel ahead that would then lead them to another opening. With the motorbikes parked but not put away, Leon secured the canons to his arms, rolled his shoulders, and cracked his neck, ready to embark into the cave.

"I'm ready," Leon said without looking back at them, peeking into the crevice with pale eagerness. Surely, they'd need a light of some kind once they got in, a light in which Leon did not possess. "It's dark in there, though."

Post by Kyran 7th January 2021, 10:55 pm

Kyran could feel his body eating away at his drunken state as he landed outside the cave. Damn it. His ability to shrug off damage extended to poisons apparently. Not to the same extent but his blissful feelings of floating in alcohol would disappear within a few minutes now. After all it had taken to get into this state, Kyran was a little irritated. He let out a sigh. Nothing to do about it now.

Good place for an ambush. Careful now, Hostie. Erebus hissed in his ear. Kyran rubbed his chin thoughtfully. Taking his companions comments in account, he held up a hand. "May I scout the cave first? Or at least alongside ourselves entering to prevent things hitting us from unexpected angles?" Medea shrieked with rage within his mind. She hated his submissive tone. His demotion from Guildmaster had hit the cat demon hardest. "I may have a partial solution for the darkness as well." Isn't someone eager to please? Malinda hissed in his ear. Kyran ignored the demons. He was merely offering due to his own limited capacity. Percy and Leon didn't seem to need his help here. He wondered what their magic might be. Probably utility given Percy's inventions. Leon seemed more like an attack mage.

If Percy acquiesced - Leon seemed to be a minon of Percy as well - Kyran sketched three basic summoning circles into the sands. A cut opened along his palm. Blood welled before falling toward the designs. Kyran drew upon his magic. "From the depths of night, Where the soul is lost, Where the mind is eaten by insanity, I call you forth! Caliban!" The blood swirled above the first circle. Kyran stepped to the second. He repeated a varying set of summons chants, calling forth Amaterasu and Nari. The swirling blood above each circle swelled in size until his creatures stepped forth.

From the first was a dark skinned elf with stark white hair. He was clad from head to toe in black leathers with a purple accent. Twin scimitars hung at his waist and a bow with accompanying quiver lay across his back. Caliban the Night Elf. From the second stepped a golden haired woman clad in a shimmering sun colored kimono. Her hands were tucked into the sleeves before her but a wakizashi and katana were slung through the sash. From the third, a massive golden white lion stepped. Kyran grinned at his summons. It had been too long since he used this magic.

"Caliban, Nari! Scout ahead. Take the side paths as often as possible and double back after 100 meters. Clear everything before starting again. We'll be taking a path. Treat that as your center." The elf nodded. Then Caliban and the lion, Nari, loped into the caves. The darkness quickly swallowed their forms. "Amaterasu, you'll light our way. Please draw your wakizashi and enter the cave." The blonde smiled at him. She did as commanded. The light didn't pierce the darkness but it did create a comforting glow and reveal 20 paces of the cave on every side. "After you, gentlemen. I have a few more preperations to do."

The redhead stepped back to use another magic. He didn't want to accidentally blind anyone. White orbs, bursting with light appeared over his chest and left arm. They broke into white tendrils that enveloped his body, forming armor amd a ring. The armor was plate mail, closely hugging Kyran's form. It was an orange color, every movement reminding one of a flickering fire. Actual fire burned upon the pauldrons. The ring on his left hand was nothing special. Little more than a white band hugging his index finger. He hesitated on his choice of weapon. Inebriated as he was, his more powerful weapons were a danger to his allies. Once the hangover kicked in, the precision weapons would take too much concentration. He settled instead on his naginata. The bladed staff would be hampered by the tunnels but the slayer had spent hours with it. He knew it as well as his own body. Another white orb appeared to be crushed in Kyran's hand. The tendrils shot from his hand forming into his chosen weapon.

The redhead hurried to catch up to his companions. The armor was surprisingly silent as he did so. "Is there any chance we could ambush her? I can offer myself as a distraction if we wish to take that route."  Kyran said, hoping to strike up conversation. He'd realized that snakes were uncomfortably close to lizards. He couldn't stand those scaly bastards.

Leon had a point. It was pretty dark. Rustling in his bag, he searched for flashlights, but in the end, he wouldn't need them. Kyran asked if he could scout the cave, and while Percy was still wary of his condition, he said a simple "sure" and paused to watch what he would do.

Man, magic was handy. Percy watched with thinly veiled jealousy as Kyran summoned several entities from presumably another realm to aid them. A dark elf, a sunny blonde, and a bright lion. The lion and dark elf took off to make sure there were no unseen dangers on their path, and the kimono-clad woman stayed behind to lead them ahead with a magical bright light. Percy watched like an enraptured child, taking in every detail as if somehow it'd whisper the secret to getting his own magic. At the very least, he could inwardly fanboy over the summons. When Key told them to go ahead, the Meliora Vitae Ace almost protested, but if he could do all this, he'd be on his fine for a few moments.

Moving ahead, Percy walked a little closer to Amaterasu. The tickling in his throat worsened and he coughed a few times, but he chalked that up to cave mold. Mold could be a nasty business. He'd have to take a round of antifungals when he got home. When the Key silently caught back up to them in his magical fiery armor, his voice startled Percy enough to make him flinch. Backing off his examination of the summon leading them, he walked more closely with his two teammates for this mission. Right, they should discuss strategy.

"I'll be honest, I don't have too much information on her. I don't know exactly where she is, either. It'd be ideal if she's nocturnal because we might have a chance to sneak up on her. But entertaining that too much will work against us, so I'd rather assume she'll know we're coming and prepare for that. I don't like the idea of putting anyone in danger as a distraction, but if that seems to be the best avenue, go ahead to give Leon and me a chance to get close and incapacitate her. I'd like to get her tranqed so we can move her to an uninhabited island," Percy explained to his comrades. He wasn't keen on killing most creatures and was dead set against killing humans. He wasn't sure where 'snake-woman' fell on his no-kill index, but if she was as sentient as a human like he'd heard, he definitely didn't feel comfortable killing her.

Perc had been correct in planning for the worst. Just as the walls of the tunnel broke away from the summon's light into a dark, yawning cavern with a lake, a rustling could be heard. It sounded like something smooth and soft moving against stone, knocking some smaller stones loose and into what sounded like an underground lake. Percy took his flashlight up and shined it further ahead than Amaterasu's glow, landing right on the face and torso of a beautiful woman. So beautiful that even Percy paused, eyes slightly widened and a light blush tinting his cheeks. Her soulful eyes gazed into his and a demure smile pressed her lips. "Oh~ Not one, but three handsome men have come to pay me a visit? My lucky day~. I've been so lonely," she charmed, primping her silky black hair.
