Dagda peered through the dark, waxy leaves of a bush. His eyes narrowed as he attempted to locate the little creature that had just escaped his view. The flash of pink he had seen just moments ago was gone. Why did these things have to be so damn fast?

It was nearing evening and the titan was currently hiking around in the forest called Sakuramori. Fiore was full of strange and magical creatures, which Dagda had discovered the hard way a few times. A few pink scars marred his skin that were still healing from recent encounters. He didn’t mind the scars one bit, though he never sought them out. In his culture, scars were a sign of respect and honor, so the more he had earned, the better.

Lately, he had been trying to gather some data on wild and magical creatures around Fiore. It was more of a personal project of becoming familiar with what kind of things lived on the continent. He was probably going to be on Earthland for a long time, so he might as well get to know his surroundings. Just the day before, he had been near the Serene Cliffs, watching whales from the heights above the ocean. They were truly fascinating creatures and he wished he could have gotten closer.

At the moment, he was chasing some sort of creature. It was small, about the height of his thumb, and a vibrant pink. From what he could tell, it was some kind of fairy-like creature. The odd thing was that he had mistaken it for a flower at first until it let out a high-pitched giggle and zoomed away. Elegant petals adorned its arms, face, and body, while green leaflike appendages extended from its back to act as wings. It had moved so quickly that Dagda did a double take. Only when it had stopped was he able to get a better look at it, but even then he wasn’t close enough.

The fairy zipped out from beneath the dark bush, letting out a laugh that sounded like wind chimes on the breeze. It flew in fast circles around Dagda’s head and then it was off again.

“Hey! Come back!” Dagda called after the fairy, his heart alight with curiosity. He jogged deeper into the forest after it.

It was never a good feeling to know you were a burden. When he was living in the forest, he didn't have to worry about what he meant for others, since the "others" were plants and animals. There in the Phoenix Forest, he lived in peace, watching people live their lives from afar. But ever since the forest was destroyed and Silver Wolf took him in, Ling couldn't help but feel like... deadweight. He couldn't read or write, so he didn't even think about stepping foot off the mountain on his own, but he also hated how cold it got up there. He could cast magic, but only at mediocre levels, and was useless as a sorcerer for hire even if he had the ability to navigate the towns on his own. The only time he stepped foot off the mountain was when he was searching for an item with one of his only friends—Pimwadee. But even then, the most he could do for her was give her a little light so she could guide them through the Spooky Forest. They were so kind to him, and all he did was take advantage of it.

The young blonde couldn't help but sulk over it. Nowadays, he couldn't look Pimwadee or Mathis in the eye without feeling his heart sink into the pits of his stomach, a wave of guilt coming upon him. Not only that, but the mountain was hard to live on. He may have come up in a forest, but it was much warmer even in winter, and he was so accustomed to his life outside that suddenly living inside was almost just as rough of an adjustment. He had to get away, if only for a morning. So, when the sunlight hit the Fiorean sky, Ling trudged down the mountain and toward the Sakuramori forests he had noticed some weeks before. He was always curious of the place, but never had the guts to visit it until now.

    . . .

"Wow..." Ling whispered to himself as he meandered through the forest, watching pink petals drift down onto the ground, "This is beautiful..." The air smelled sweet and the gentle breeze was crisp and clear, his white cloak flowing in the wind as he walked down the petal-coated pathway. He knew he'd reach a town eventually on this path, and he'd stop and turn back when he got that far. But now, he couldn't help but let himself fall for this forest and the calm, undisturbed voices within...

    This way!

    "...?"

When Ling turned his head to the light and squeaky voice that called out to him, he saw something tiny and pink. It had wings like a butterfly and a body caked with glitter. It looked like... a fairy. Ling had seen something like fairies before, and it wasn't at all strange that he could understand what they were trying to say either. He had always been able to speak to and understand plants and animals, magical and organic alike. So, as timid and bashful as he was, he was more interested in what they had to say right now.

"Oh, hi there—w-wait! Where are you going?!" Ling flinched and reached out there hand to stop them, but the fairy flew away right before he could catch them. The color drained from his face, baffled and flustered. If he left right now, he could follow the path they took, but he also had no clue where it was taking him! "U-Uhm! Uh! O-Okay! I'm coming! Just... wait up! Please...!"

Quick! Quick! You both will come together! Quick! Quick!

He followed the fairy persistently, catching a look of it whenever he was about to lose his way. After a few minutes of mindless trailing, he delved deeper and deeper into the Sakuramori forest. He kept going and going until the fairy led him to an open space in the forest, where a single, humongous tree with an enormous grove of petals decorated its head, all of them looking like the wings of the very fairy he followed. Standing in the small clearing alone, Ling looked up at the tree with a look of awe.

"You're a beautiful tree, but..." he looked back over his shoulder, and then around the entire area, "Why did you bring me here, and what did you mean you both? Is... uhm... something wrong?"

The fairy didn't answer him, instead, it just fluttered around his face, giggling innocently. Meanwhile, Ling looked bewildered and a little concerned. He wasn't quite sure what to do, and why that tree's petals looked so... off.

Dagda followed the chiming laughter deeper into the mysterious forest. He was aware of how far off the paths he was going, but that didn’t stop him. While it was a generally sunny day, only a bit of light peeked through the treetops. Something felt off about this place, but the titan shrugged it off as the presence of all the strange and magical creatures that existed here. The creatures he had seen seemed harmless enough by his standards. There wasn’t a lot that could seriously harm him.

The fairy creature flitted in and out of his view, but the melodic sounds of its voice kept a constant pinpoint on its location. It seemed to almost be leading him somewhere instead of just fleeing. The sounds coming from it could have been a language of sorts, but Dagda had no way to understand it. Maybe if he could study these creatures he could figure it out.

Some time later, the petaled fairy led him into a clearing. Focused on his pursuit and not where he was putting his feet, Dagda stumbled over a protruding root. The massive man skidded into the grassy opening on his hands and knees. Swearing under his breath, he began looking around once he came to a stop. Occupying the clearing was another, much smaller and much younger man. His hood was up, but strands of blonde hair peeked out from underneath. Another fairy danced around his head with peals of cheerful laughter. There was a timid look about him, though his eyes were trained on something across the clearing with a gaze of awe.

Following that gaze, Dagda saw a massive tree. Its trunk was incredibly wide and the top branches were out of view. Roots claimed a large portion of the ground around. However, the size was not the most interesting part about it. Adorning every branch were clusters of pink petals. Occasional leaves protruded, but the space was dominated by vibrant rose and fuchsia color. It looked like the tree was in full bloom.

Something about those petals was off, though. Dagda couldn’t put his finger on it until the fairy he had been following flew towards the tree. It landed among the blossoms and instantly blended in. Furrowing his brow, the titan realized that all the petals looked the same. The color and pattern was identical to that of the little fairy creature. Still kneeling from his clumsy entrance, Dagda closed his eyes for a moment and reached out through his hands with his earthbending powers. One perk of being connected with the earth below was that he could sense the plants that had roots in the ground. The lush forest made it hard to focus for a second, but he pushed his senses towards the giant tree.

What he felt was, well, nothing. The tree was dead. Its roots had long since stopped pulling nutrients and water from the earth and were now rotting due to the moisture. Intricate tangles of roots would hold it upright in the forest for many decades to come unless a natural disaster occured.

Dagda’s eyes shot open. He raised his head to look at the tree once more. The petals were shifting a bit, but the tree still appeared to be alive and blooming from a distance. Something was not right here. There was a sense of foreboding in the air, ever so slight.

“That tree is dead,” Dagda called over to the other man in a low voice. He hoped the blonde would believe him. It seemed impossible with the appearance of a full bloom, but it was the truth.

With a fairy fluttering in his face like a gnat, doing nothing giggling, it was beginning to feel more and more like he had wasted time following it here. It didn't say anything and seemed enamored with the blonde's pretty face, but it was starting to wear his patience a little too thin. With a quiet sigh, he scrunched his face at the fairy, looking past it to stare at that odd and beautiful tree.

Ling was beginning to turn away and retrace his steps back to the path he started on, but then some deep, rich voice greeted him from across the clearing. He flinched when he heard it, stunned to hear anything even remotely human so deep in this forest, and when peered around to match a face to the voice, lo and behold, it was an especially large man. He was visibly muscular and well-refined in build, but what on Earthland was he doing here? Well, maybe Ling wasn't one to talk, but he had thought himself alone. And what's more, the man had something interesting to say about the tree.

"It's dead?" Ling repeated, looking back at the tree and its colorful grove that seemed so full of life. It looked nothing like a dead tree if you judged it by its appearance, but a quick closing of his eyes and kneeling down to touch a root that stretched all the over to his feet, he heard and felt nothing. He's right... I don't feel or hear anything from this tree at all, which means... His pretty emerald eyes floated from the root to the grinning fairy fluttering around his face, and then at the grove of leaves on the dead tree. The petals and its wings... were identical. When he realized this, his expression was struck with a twinge of apprehension. The other person they were mentioning earlier must've been the man from the other side of the clearing, but why were they guiding them to a dead tree, to begin with?

"I'm sorry, but I think it's time for us to leave," Ling said, looking at the tall man from earlier with that same anxiety in his tone, like he was hoping he'd take the hint, "your tree's very nice though... sorry."

But you can't leave yet! the fairy rebuttled in its same high-pitched, cute voice as it grabbed a small portion of Ling's white cloak.

"I'm really sorry...!" Ling shook his head, attempting to walk away again.

But we haven't eaten you yet!

    "?!"

Out of nowhere, the petals began to flutter like a dragonfly's wings, and unlatching from the stretch of branches were fairies identical to the one latching on to him. All of them giggling, all of them laughing and grinning as they fluttered away from the tree like a swarm of beautiful locusts. As tiny as they were, their numerous were so many that they were like a dark stormcloud that cast a shadow over the entire clearing, leaving nothing but the dark and creepy silhouette of the dead and now naked tree that they latched to before. Maybe that man couldn't tell what they were saying, but it was nothing as sweet and innocent as it led out to be. They were all discussing which parts of their bodies they wanted to eat the most, and how the pretty blonde one wasn't as juicy as his buff counterpart just nearby. They really were going to eat him, and he played right into their hands! He was so...so...

"RUN!" Ling shouted, pivoting on his foot and facing the path in which he came. He tried to burst into the fastest sprint he could, but the moment he moved out of place, he fell down face-first into the ground. "W-What?!" he yanked on his feet, but they wouldn't budge. There were vines and roots slowly spiraling from the soil and wrapping around his body, holding him steady for the fairies that were beginning to separate and pursue both of them. He leaned over and yanked his ankle free of the root itself and finally was able to start running. Everything was dark and the roots that grew out of the ground were becoming faster and growing around other trees as they pursued them both.

Was the other guy okay? What if he got caught in those roots too? Suddenly, Ling stopped in his tracks and abruptly turned around to stare at the plume of fairies hovering above them. He looked around for the man, but it was hard to hear his own voice through the wall of mystical, disembodied laughter.

"H-Heeeeyyy!! S-Sir?! Where are you?! Heeeey!!" he cupped both hands over his mouth as he shouted back into the forest, but if he didn't show himself or respond, Ling had no choice but to head back and find him!

The blonde seemed to take in his words and look back at the tree to confirm the titan’s claim. The fairy still flittered around his face. He told the fairy he had to leave, to which it began to protest in a shrill tone. The young man was attempting to leave the clearing when everything turned to chaos.

All at once, the fluttering of thousands of tiny wings filled the air. What seemed to be petals on the old tree were actually hundreds of fairies just like the ones who had been pestering both Dagda and the blonde man. Their pink, flowery wings lifted them into the air in a massive swarm. Everything went dark as they blotted out the sun more than the canopy of leaves had. Many tiny voices filled the air, all of them indistinguishable. As a group, they hovered for a second, then split into two streams and made an aggressive beeline for the two men.

The younger guy yelled for him to run, but Dagda didn’t have to be told twice. He was already scrambling up from the ground, stumbling a few times as he attempted to run before his feet were fully underneath him. Once he was steady, the titan booked it. A glimpse of the white cloak was all he saw of the other person before they were separated by trees.

Dagda’s mind raced as he fled from the flower fairies. They had seemed innocent enough, but perhaps they had been saying something to the guy that made him think they were up to no good. Either way, he wasn’t about to stop and have a friendly chat with the little things. The way they were pursuing him was definitely malicious.

Thinking quickly, he made a sharp right turn and attempted to circle back to the clearing. He had to know if the blonde man was still alive, and maybe there was something in that area that could help him fight off the fairies. The little buggers were quick though, and he felt a few catch up to him and latch on to his shoulders. They began sinking teeth into his skin, gnawing like tiny, floral dogs. While it wasn’t the most painful feeling, it was akin to that of getting a tattoo, like an uncomfortable sting that wouldn’t go away.

Dagda made it to the edge of the clearing when a root seemed to rise right out of the ground and grab his leg, dragging him to the ground once more. Before more fairies could land on him and begin their feast, the titan began to change. From toes to head, a pinkish-red granite was replacing his skin. The stone crawled across his body like wildfire until he was made completely of it. Fairies that had been gnawing on him found their teeth bouncing off the hard rock. Letting out frustrated cries, they swarmed around Dagda for a few minutes, obscuring his view. No longer eager to escape, he stood there and let them have their fit of anger.

Looking around, Dagda heard the frantic calls of a voice through the loud cries of the fairies. It was the man from earlier! “I’m here!” the titan yelled in response, his thunderous voice much louder and deeper than the fairies. “Are you alright?” Hopefully that would be enough for them to find each other through the wall of flying pink bodies. Dagda began pushing his way through the swarm, heading in the direction he thought he last heard the young man. While he was protected for a while with his stone skin, the carnivorous florals would likely still be wanting to chomp on the exposed person.
