    Of a New Chapter 3zKL
Forethinking. By definition, to consider something before hand. In other terms, to think ahead. Some use it to express the value and responsibility that comes with one's decisions over making stupid, at times hedonistic mistakes. Think of the future. Unfortunately, forethinking is not a skill possessed by all. That leads to acts of behaviour that can often be found pitiful, irresponsible and, by some, uncivilized. Through those acts, sometimes one can end up thinking about their future after all. Such an irony. However, one thing is for certain. That no matter the course, and stops, this behavioural train takes, it all, almost always, leads up to one of the greatest mistakes ever one can commit. Waking up with a hangover. And nothing, nothing feels good while on a hangover.

Eight hours, an undisclosed amount of alcohol and ten grams of weed ago.

What was supposed to be a small, laid back farewell gathering for Whisper was turning out into a bash. A rager. A proper, full-blown party. Not that it wasn't expected to. Au contrair. But the guys had really gone the extra mile this time. James brought over the alcohol. Rum, wisky, gin and whatnot. Enough to supply a bar. A gesture greatly appreciated by whisper, who liked to assume bartending duties at such meetings. Marisha had invited everyone else. Old friends, acquintances, classmates from highschool. Even that guy, Wade, who gang repeatedly said wanted to hang out with but never did. Theo, always capable of delivering both quality and quantity, took care of herbal recreation. Daphne. Well, Daphne was the one person who orchestrated this.

The nigth proved to be long and eventful, with alcohol and music aplenty. Usually Whisper was the one to throw such parties. At every such party, authorities never failed to show up. However, that was not a party he has planned. Knew about it? Sure. Expected it to happen? You bet. But it still was not planned by him. Seeing as this was not his party, and rather a party for him, and concenquently no authorities were bound to make an appearance he put such thoughts out of his mind. Besides, he was in the middle of a drinking game, thus had bigger fish to fry. With a sudden motion he downed his fifth whisky glass, putting the it down on the table with an audible thud, an exhale escaping his lips. "Alright, you got me this time" he said, looking deadpan at James, "Tik."

    Late this morning

Reasonably unearthly groans were followed by the stirring of a half naked, tattoed, blonde figure laying on a bed. Its covers, wrinkled and walfay to the ground, obviously having lost the fight of tossing with the bed's occupant. The pillows both on the center as, apparently, the man had slept on the middle of the bed with one feet hanging over and one foot touching the hardwood floor. After the stirring came a yawn, unsurprisingly not stiffled. Left forearm and hand rose from the matress to support the messy, bobcut wearing, head that was also rising. A curse being the first thing leaving its lips that day. "Fuck." As he used his left hand to rub his temple and eyes, the man sat up on his bed, reaching for the nightstand. There, freshly woken up fingers reached for last night's cigarette, smouldered in its tray. Having accomplished this they sook a lighter next. Not being able to quite grab it, the man, extended his fingertips, managing to push the lighter close enough to snatch it. Soon enough it was lit, placed upon lips who hapilly took in the smoke. "Coffee." Was the second word that escaped those lips that day.

With a set of slow, seemingly painful, movements the man got up from his bed. Stretched. Yawned once more and started making way to the kitchen. Left hand holding the cigarette, right hand going through his hair. The bed was but a few steps from the wonderful, brown, liquid. Which were pretty shortly traversed and included a small jump made to pass the step near the bed. This being a studio, a quite impressive one at that, the first thing you saw entering through the door was the living room. Black and grey colors dominated, clashing beautifuly with the brown, hardwood floor. Further inside was the kitchen, separated from the living room by a couple of half walls and what served as a dining area. Similalr color scheme prevading through them both. Right to the living room was a door, which led to the bathroom. However, to the left of this kitchen living room combo was an one step bed platform, stretching through that part of the house top to bottom.

Having made that cup of coffee, Whisper gathered his things, while taking in the caramel aroma of his brew. He sat on a grey recliner, set the mug and an ashtray on a nearby coffee table and begun enjoying his breakfast. "Ah, coffee and cigarettes." He said as he begun rolling one. The shag he used was heavy and the papers thin, designed to not let the cigarette burn out on its own. "Wake up." He said, with a filter tip on his mouth, only to receive light snoring as a response. "I said, wake up!" He said once more. This time though it was followed by a kick to the couch next to him. A manouver that seemed to work as Theo rose up from the couch, going through the same set of ritualistic, hangover movements Whisper had just moments before. "Hell you want, man?"

The two friends spent some time enjoying a hangover cup of coffee. Well, the later part as the former also consisted of a terrible headache, a dry mouth and an uneasy stomach. They talked. Mainly going over last night's events. Funny moments. Awesome moments. Awesomely funny moments. That one round of beer pong they played using gin instead. Pretty soon time had passed. As Whisper was packing his things his best, and one of few, friend was already dressed and heading out the door. Admittedly his shirt was wrinkled, untucked and his tie not properly tied. "You're going to do fine you know, " Theo said with a slightly sad, already nostalgic smile "they are going to love you there. You will so fit in." Not choosing to get sentimental Whisper scoffed at his friends reassurances. "I know! It is going to be legen...dary! he exclaimed, watching as his friend smiled once more and closed the door.

Almost done with packing everything up the blonde mage place a photograph in his bag, taking a long, good look at it, before zipping it up. Him, Theo, Marisha, James and Daphne."I just hope it really is.

    Now

It had been a long walk. Climbing up a mountain, even when a path is present, is not an easy or relaxing thing to do. At least not for Whisper. Despite fall being his favorite season, with winter a close second, he did not hold much sympathy for feeling cold. It was not as bad as it could be, considering the presence of those spectral wolves did help lessen the cold's effect, or rise the temperature, Whisper did not know which. Still, it was as bad as he could have it and that was not something pleasant at all. Especially when nursing a hangover. That's not to say that the trip was all bad. He even got to pet an adorable wolf on his way there. Whisper had always been more of a cat guy, but he was never one to reject affection from adorable animals.

Fixing his scarf, that had gotten a bit screwed by the winds, he looked forward. Squinting his eyes he could already see it. The next couple of minutes passed without him noticing and brought him to the entrance of a beautiful, well cared for, white garden. Beyond the garden were thick, coniferous trees and large rock formations framing a small, anassuming, to the unwitting eye, building. The guildhall of Silver Wolf. Walking through the garden, quick on his feet, Whisper streatched, assumed a strut and marched towards the door. One of his most charming smiles adornign his face. Small, slightly crooked to the left and cocky, to some obnoxious even. He opened the doors. Slowly, softly and yet with poise he took a step into what would, hopefully be a place he would come to belong.

-Silver Wolf Guild Hall, the guild cafe-

Clad in her green, white, and gold outfit with Argent Gloves on her hands and Ses Revanche stashed in her right boot, Leona was seated at a table in the guild cafe and thinking about the Daggerbook laptop she had not even used yet while sipping coffee in the cafe. She would have to actually start using her Daggerbook, but she had other concerns at the moment. She had been on an interesting adventure to Midi that involved traveling across the country with a kitsune named Kaede, who wanted to go to her younger sister's house located not too far from Sakae Shrine. Sakae Shrine was a pilgrimage site for everyone from the young to the old: even the Emperor himself made an annual pilgrimage to pay homage to the dragon spirit that was ensuring the safety and prosperity of Midi.

Leona had met Kaede's younger sister Kaname, who was every bit the bibliophile that Kaede had made her out to be. There were bookshelves filled with books in the living room and museum-grade display cases with centuries-old books nestled in them in the secure basement of Kaname's house. Even though Leona could not understand a single character of the Midi language, seeing first editions of old books and scrolls was something oddly fascinating to the Wizard Saint and amateur scholar. Kaname was fiercely protective of them and would not let Leona touch a single one, but considering that all of the books and scrolls were very old first editions and not copies, the kitsune was justified in being protective of them.

Drifting back to the present, Leona sipped the last of the coffee from an official Silver Wolf mug with the guild logo printed in black on the front. It was at that moment she felt a magic signature from the area around the front door. Leona got up and pushed her chair in, then walked to the counter, paid for the coffee, and walked towards the foyer to go greet whoever it was on the other side of the door.

    -In the foyer-

Leona felt the magic signature get stronger as she approached the front door to open it. As it turned out there was no need to open the door because the source of the magic signature had already entered the guild hall. The source was a tall and well-dressed blond fellow. He was dressed in an orange dress shirt with black tie and black pants with a scarf wound around his neck. On his face was a smile that was self-assured, perhaps even too self-assured.

Leona did not give the matter too much thought: after making him wait so long she quickly greeted the newcomer.

"Hi there. I'm Leona Jarnefeldt, Guild Mistress of Silver Wolf! How can I help you?" Leona asked the tall and well-dressed fellow.

    Of a New Chapter 3zKL
Brown eyes, brimming with intelligence, sparkling with charm, took in the sight. Warm, cozy and inviting, yet elegant all the same. If one were to make a note of something that would be the overuse of wood, as it covered both walls and ceiling. Persumably the floor too. However, Whisper had always been a fan of hardwood floors, and dark colored wood was usually, if not exclusively, hardwood. So he paid it no mind. Besides, the orange hue provided by the area's low lighting mad for a certain ambience that excellently complimented it. He was not given much time to appreciate the atmospheric scenery, though. Mere moments after taking a step inside Whisper was approached and addressed to by someone.

His eyes switching targets, he came across a young woman. Dressed in the well-matched-together colors of green and white she presented herself as the guild's Mistress. Also present in her outfit was the less favorable, to him, color of gold. Which, for some reason, Whisper felt would be better off paired with red or crimson. Even then, green and white was a far superior combination. He slightly widened his smile. Always careful to not switch into his trademark grin. Some found it eerie. Not that it required much effort to pull off. Whisper had almost perfected his charming smile by channeling his inner Sparvey Hecter, which he acquired through many, many, many hours of watching Blazers; a popular legal drama series.

"Pleased to make your acquiantance, Leona." He said as he extended her his right hand. A black ring visible on the ring finger. "Wolfgang Harlow Ignatius Salvador Evelyn von Ryker..." he slightly paused for air, and to feintly scoff at the joke that was his own name "...but please, call me Whisper. If you are wondering where the p in that acronym comes from, well that is the puzzle."

Connecting with people was not an easy task for Whisper. More so with people he met for the first time. For that reason first impressions were not his natural forte. Which is why everything he said and did was according to a well practised, scripted interaction. Including the above word play, theorized, by some close friends, to be the only reason he chose Whisper as his sobriquet in the first place. Nevertheless, these set-up introduction had always worked so far. Even though he didn't consider them as actual first impressions, or at least not completely, they did make for a great image. An image he cheifly used for business situations. However, no matter how much he wanted to fit in here, to do that he first had to get in. And this image was one of his main selling points.

"Listen, I am not one to beat around the bush." said the blond confidently. "I am one of the best researchers, connaisseurs and purveyors of arcane items you can find." he stated, holding his left palm straight, level next to his head, to indicate his quality. "So where do I sign up? Because you are not only looking at your next guild member, " short pause for dramatic effect "but also the best damn guild member you are ever going to see."

Leona was pleased to make the acquaintance of "Wolfgang Harlow Ignatius Salvador Evelyn von Ryker", or Whisper, as he called himself. She found him to be interesting and somewhat charming... in a strange way that was hard to put into words. Still, she was always glad to see a potential new member arrive at the doors of Silver Wolf. He did not waste too much time cutting to the chase and said words to that effect.

Whisper claimed that he was one of the best "researchers, connoisseurs, and purveyors of arcane items" that she could ever find. He also claimed to be the "best damn guild member she would ever see." Whisper was not exactly a humble guy, but Leona always had room for someone with the determination to go out in the field and back up their boasting with results.

When she and Ozwald had first met almost a month ago Ozwald had claimed to be "an adventurer extraordinaire." Now he was starting to back up that claim with some impressive adventures to his credit and showed no signs of slowing down. Since she had given Ozwald a chance, Whisper deserved a chance to prove that his claim was not just hot air.

"As the Guild Mistress I can help you get signed up, but before we do, would you like to hear about the divisions of Silver Wolf and what their missions are?" Leona asked Whisper. He had already indicated an area of interest when he claimed to be interested in arcane items. While that interest would put him in the Scholars division, the Wizard Saint decided to inform him of the other two Divisions in case something else caught his attention. If he still wanted to be a Scholar after the explanation Leona would be glad to induct him into the guild as its newest Scholar.

    Of a New Chapter 3zKL
Things seemed to be going pretty well. While Leona looked to be kind, polite and accommodating, she was also head of the guild. No one made Guild Master, or Mistress, without being able to back it up. Which was why Whisper felt glad that his show and air of confidence, if not arrogance, appeared to be working. After all, no one wanted a bad start with their future boss, for lack of a better word. However, Whisper was a man to always put his money where his mouth was. His boasting was never just for show. He had the credentials, skills and will to back it up. A fact he was ready to prove.

Apropos being ready; a mage must always be prepared. That was one of the tenets that had been instilled into him over the course of his life. True to this belief, he hadn't come to Silver Wolf's doorstep without first having done some research. Besides, the guild's existence and general scope of activities was not some obscure, well kept secret. That being said, in the name of preparation, he was never one to deny information. And since the Guild Mistress herself had offered...

"By all means, feel free to do so." He told her. His left hand reaching to his back pocket, pulling out an ornate, black cigarette case and a small lighter. Whisper usually prefered to roll his own cigarettes, however, always prepared as stated above, this time he opted for pre-rolled ones, considering the area's low temperature. And he was right to do so. During his walk up here his fingers had gone too numb for him to be able to roll. Taking one between his right index and middle finger, he put the case back in. Not knowing Leona's stance on smokign he thought it best to ask first before lighting it up. "Excuse me, do you mind?" He said, his eyes briefly darting to it so as to indicate the subject of his question.

"Silver Wolf's divided into three Divisions. You have the Hunters, the Scholars, and the Defenders. They all have different jobs, but they all work together to help the guild fulfill its missions, which are conservation, magical research, and treasure hunting." Leona started the explanation and tried her best to avoid insulting Whisper's intelligence with poor word choice like using words that were too simple.

"The Hunters go out into the field and find artifacts and other treasures to bring back to the guild hall. Things like magic books, magic weapons, magic jewelry... anything with magic. They bring it back and help with conservation by keeping those things out of the hands of people who would misuse them. They also tend to be the guild's most avid treasure hunters." Leona gave a brief rundown of the Hunters.

"The Scholars are the guild members who research the properties of the items the Hunters bring back and determine both their magic value and monetary value. They're the main division that does magical research, but they're also a big part of conservation. They preserve anything the Hunters find for future generations." Leona did her best to explain the Scholars. Last but certainly not least came the Defenders.

"The Defenders are tasked with protecting the guild hall and the guild vault. Their protection works towards conservation by making sure that the artifacts aren't stolen and misused." Leona explained the three divisions the best she could in a way that would not insult Whisper's intelligence. She was not the most articulate member of Silver Wolf, but as the Guild Mistress it was her responsibility to explain how the guild worked to newcomers like Whisper.

"While my explanation makes it sound like the guild's divisions all have a task exclusive to them, in practice there's some overlap. For example, if a Scholar or Defender who's traveling to or from a job happens to find an artifact, they can pick it up and bring it back to the guild hall without having to call in Hunters. And if the guild hall ever comes under attack, all guild members have to help defend the hall whether they're an official Defender or not." Leona explained that there was some overlap of the responsibilities of the three divisions by citing two of the most prominent examples of that overlap. Whisper pulled out an ornate cigarette lighter and a cigarette and was just about to light it when he paused and turned towards Leona to ask about her stance on smoking.

"Go ahead. You can smoke, Whisper." Leona gave him permission to smoke. She was not allergic to cigarette smoke. As far as she knew no one within the guild hall was allergic either, but if she ever found out otherwise she might have to change the guild's smoking policy.

Post by Whisper 13th September 2020, 4:56 pm

    Of a New Chapter 3zKL
Whisper stood there, his charm still in full effect, while he listened to Leona's description about the guild's departments. He listened and he took She had been brief and to the point. Neither dumbing down nor overly comlpicating what she wanted to say. A skill appreciated in, and more or less required from as Whisper thought, all Guild Masters or people with similar roles. One wouldn't want to burden newbies with unnecessarily wordy sentences. Yet they also wouldn't like to give said newbies the impression that they don't think much of their mental capabilities. That was especially true in a guild such as Silver Wolf, whose main goal was pretty intelectually inclined. Whisper himself was glad to see that his future Guild Mistress, no matter how young she seemed to be, was able to use such diplomatic skills with apparent ease. Though it was expected by people in such positions, no one could say that they all had it. He was certain, after all, that many, such as professors or project heads, back at his university did not.

Permission granted, Whisper went ahead and lit his cigarette. Slightly chaffed, from the cold, lips touched the tip drawing in the smoke. A well deserved reward for a hike so long in such low temperatures. He took in the first few drags in contemplation of what role would be best suited for him here. He vacillated between Scholar and Hunter. Indeed, primarily, he was a researcher. A man of science and academics. And quite qualified in that specter as a matter of fact. On the other hand he knew that perciesly because of that fact, his skills with magic itself, and the knowledge provided to him by the Mask of Sovereigns, he was more than able to fill the role of a Hunter too; he could fight, he could track down artifacts of all kinds and significance and he could also lend a hand in assessing them.

Trying to not let his ego get the best of him he let out a slight smirk, thinking that he was, indeed, a perfect fit for Silver Wolf. The only department he wouldn't do as well in was the Defenders. Not because he lacked the ability to do so, but because he found their responsibilities too stationary and bland. It was taking action that he seeked. Whenever he could, not only when a crisis emerged. As such, Defender was out of the question. This train of thought, however, led him to his answer. As much a man of science as he was, where he was today he owed it to him finding the Mask of Sovereigns. Or being found by it, Whisper still had doubts about which actually happened. Thing is, he would have never come across it had he not gone out and into the field. Thus, Hunter seemed to be the logical choice.

Lost in his own cloud of thoughts, half his cigarette had already gone out before he snapped out of it. Charming as ever, he quickly, with only the feintest hint of awkwardness, apologized for spacing out for a bit. Not wasting his time he delivered his answer on the unasked, but heavily implied as far as he was concerned, question of in which department he believed he would be more of a help. "Well as absurd as it may be" he said "I think that I would be of more use as a Hunter. But I am always willing to lend a hand in any research if needed.". And if one ever cared to listen a bit more carefully, they would notice that mid-sentence, his r's became more rolled, and his pronoucniation ever so slightly changed...to that of a mild, Irish accent.

Leona let Whisper smoke without any complaint. After she had given a brief rundown of the three divisions she stood in silence and did not speak unless spoken to while Whisper made his choice of which Division to join. The choice of which division to join was a big one because it stood to impact a Silver Wolf member's career in more ways than one. The Wizard Saint let Whisper take as much time as he needed to pick the division that was the best fit for him and his talents. Based on the confident statement he had told her earlier, the Wizard Saint halfway expected him to pick the Scholars.

Leona waited patiently for the blond man to speak and after he had undoubtedly run over the choices in his mind was rewarded with his decision, which was to join... the Hunters?

The Wizard Saint was surprised by that announcement, but the choice was his and his alone and he had chosen to join the Hunters. His primary division would be the Hunters, but he would offer aid to the Scholars if they needed him. Leona would forward that information to Mercury Arsenault, the Ace in charge of the Scholars. In the meantime Silver Wolf had just gotten its newest Hunter.

"OK then, Whisper. You'll be our newest Hunter. I'll pass along your offer to help the Scholars if they need it to Mercury Arsenault, the Ace who leads the Scholars." Leona said to the taller blond. Now that he had made that choice it was time to ask about the last formality that the Guild Mistress had to do before Whisper was an official member of the guild. She would need to ask where he would like his guild tattoo... but first she would offer him an opportunity to ask any other questions he might have had before they moved onto that last crucial step.

"Before we take care of the last official thing that needs to be done before you're an official Silver Wolf member, are there any questions that you'd like to ask?" Leona asked Whisper, offering a chance to ask any lingering questions that he might have had before they moved on to the last step, which concerned the color and location of his guild tattoo.
