Contrary to popular belief, the silent glaciers were not so silent. Maybe compared to others places it was silent, but even the faintest of noises seemed to be elevated in these icecaps. They were about as noisy as you'd expect icecaps to be. You could hear the herds of reindeer galloping across the snowy wasteland or the crashing and falling of a glacier splitting apart in the far, far distance, making the white earth rumble in its destruction.
The Silent Glaciers were wide, expansive, flat, and empty. All of its precarious features were enormous and far off on the horizon, so far that it seemed that no matter how long you walked, you would never reach it. Obviously this wasn't true, but it felt that way. And yet, despite its flatness, many populations of different animals thrived like the reindeer from earlier. It was hard to explain how they could flourish in such a barren land, but there were always creatures that could. Needless to say, it was difficult for humans to live off the land like the herd of reindeer, and consequently, there were very few if any settlements to be found in the Silent Glaciers. It was too dangerous, too unpredictable of a place to live comfortably, and so cold that the packed snow covering the earth beneath them was as hard as rocks. When it snowed, it never really snowed. There were either snowstorms, blizzards, or nothing but a clear sky and cold sun above you. The weather was erratic and extreme, and so were the other beasts that lived there. You couldn't pick them off the horizon like you could the distant glaciers, but they were there and a big reason why many of the settlements that may have existed here ceased to.
It wasn't storming today, and according to weather reports, the next snowstorm was not likely to come until tomorrow morning. But regardless of the weather, a client's troubles didn't blow away so easily.
Sheldon Stern and Chiyuki Suzuki both recently received promotions, and as a result, also received the impressive lists of issues to resolve that came with the rank. Their schedules were beginning to look somewhat similar to the Field Marshal's, or at least Doppo's was. He couldn't speak for his good friend, but he assumed they both had similar circumstances.
One of the items on that list required them both, together, to be dispatched to the Silent Glaciers. To put it simply, because it was rather simple, they and two others were responsible for "exterminating powerful monsters" in the area. It was an informal request of a client who simply needed some of the beasts' materials, but was of such particular import to the Magic Council themselves that they were inclined to send some of their best men alongside the other wizards that would accompany them.
They left early in the morning, because driving to the Silent Glaciers was not as linear as one would expect. They weren't so easily accessible and the terrain was rough for the average vehicle, but for a Rune Knight Cruiser, some ice and snow was nothing for its tires. That, and Doppo was a surprisingly skilled driver. Most things that the average motorist would struggle with he found very little trouble in working around. He and Sheldon sometimes stopped for coffee or restroom breaks, and would then resume their day trip, though it wasn't unlikely that they may be stuck there for more than twenty-four hours.
When they arrived, and they were the first to arrive, Doppo parked the cruiser at the rendevouz point which the client specified as some courtesy of the mages taking on the job. They were easy to spot, as their crusier was the blackest thing on the empty, flat horizon. Doppo blasted the heat in the car, reaching for the handle just below his seat and reclining as far back as he could, practically laying down.
Doppo groaned and sighed, the bags underneath his eyes appearing through the shock of red hair laying over his fatigued, pale face. ". . .It's f*ckin' cold outside, man. . ." he mumbled to Sheldon, wearing a winter trench out that looked similar to his uniform. Just looking at Doppo could make you feel hot, but dreading the chilliness of the Silent Glaciers outside, he relished the heat as long as he could. He was a lot more talkative around Sheldon, but this was only a result of him getting comfortable around him as time passed. With others, he probably wouldn't have said a thing. But with him, Doppo felt as if he could unravel his complaints while they waited for their company to arrive.
