Somewhere down a wealthy avenue in Capital Crocus, there is a highly esteemed cafe in an easily recognizable cobblestone building. Le Trésor, or "the treasure", was nothing short of fine dining in the world of coffee and a luxury for those who could afford it. There was no dress code, but everyone who lounged inside wore expensive clothing or looked of a superior class. Light, playful acoustic guitar music frolicked in the background as sunlight flooded into the cafe through its large, transparent windows that lined the front. Sitting alone at a table placed furthest from the door but closest to these windows was Louie Calvin Klein, his neck, wrists, and earlobes adorned with golden jewelry and his clothes (albeit casual for someone of his tastes) making him fit in with everyone else there.

Louie has been able to indulge in many other luxuries aside from Le Trésor because of his abundant wealth from Napedia. When impulsively deciding to leave home for Fiore, the only thing he brought with him was a portion of his riches, which roughly translated to much less from traditional Napedian coin to jewels. Regardless, it still summed to much more than what an average Fiorean citizen could ever acquire.

Alone at his table, Louie held a small porcelain mug with a dark roast filling it. He held it, but didn't drink it. Instead, his pretty ruby eyes were fixed on a thick, regal letter in front of him. It was a letter from a man whose name Louie had never heard of until now. Julian Wagner—a Count of some faraway land who claims to have fraternized with his mother and estranged father. Although his familial matters were of great import, it was hard to draw any sort of urgency from a letter written by a stranger. In fact, Louie was inclined to dismiss the matter altogether! He'd be a dullard and a dunce for trusting a letter so sincerely! But after reading it time and time again, he couldn't help but find himself here in Le Trésor, waiting impatiently for someone to arrive. Louie was there to satisfy his own curiosity, and although arriving only ten minutes earlier, felt as though he were being stood up by a stranger!

"What is taking them so long? What idiocy. Tch." Louie complained to himself, raising the dark roast to his lips to sip in some sort of fit.

Aeluri fiddled with the buttons on the left sleeve of her blazer as she walked along. The rich crimson garment was over top of a dark gray collared shirt and accompanied by a matching pair of red trousers. Earrings dangled from her earlobes for the first time in a while. The woman’s heels clicked on the rough sidewalk with each step. Occasionally people would step aside as she approached, giving curious glances to such a professionally dressed individual. Though she was in a more wealthy part of Crocus, she still stood out among the crowds. Only a certain kind of person wore a suit so vibrant.

The dark mage had just recently appeared from a nearby alleyway. Her magical abilities granted her the handy tool of transporting herself through shadows. Thus, she could simply step into the shadows of her rented room within the Hidden Blades headquarters and appear out of the darkness in an alleyway just blocks away from her destination. Though the ability took some energy, Aeluri found it quite convenient. She had casually slipped out of the alleyway and joined the pedestrians, heading to Le Trésor.

Just a few days before, Aeluri had received a letter via owl - an unusual method. The raptor had swooped down when she was returning home after a mission and landed on a nearby wall. She had stared it down for a minute, trying to decide if there was a threat. Seeing mail delivered by owl was something she had only heard of in stories. Typically it was transported from city to city on trucks or trains. Approaching slowly, she reached out and took the envelope from between the talons of the creature. It let off a loud hoot and took to the air, leaving her to observe the mail. The paper was thick and textured, sealed by golden wax and stamped with a wolf’s head.

Upon returning to her quarters, Aeluri had popped the wax and opened the letter inside. It took her a moment to become accustomed to the looped cursive handwriting.

    Greetings Ms. Atra,

My name is Count Julian Wagner. I hail from the capital city Brieburg of the country Blierhyria, which borders Minstrel to the north…

Aeluri skimmed through the first paragraph, scoffing as the writer listed off all of his titles and accomplishments. He really seemed to be entitled and wealthy. Just what did he want from her?

I am writing to you today to request your assistance in an important matter in Fiore. Recently, a young man by the name of Louie Calvin Klein has traveled to Fiore. He is the son of some dear friends of mine. His father has requested that someone be present to watch over him and give him some guidance as he finds his way in Fiore. Neither his father nor myself are able to leave our positions to oversee Louie. All relatives that we have contacted have refused the task, even a cousin of his that lives right in Fiore. Thus, we have had to search for outside sources. Out of all our searching among people of note in Fiore, your record and experiences as a dark mage have led us to believe that you would be a worthy mentor for Louie.

Aeluri had raised her eyebrows in surprise. This was… unexpected. She had never even considered teaching someone else. That was probably because she couldn’t stand the majority of people.

Louie has received a letter too, and we have planned for you two to meet at Le Trésor in Crocus to make sure that this will be a good match. Just a forewarning - Louie can be a little… tough to deal with. We believe that you can handle him though, and provide the guidance that he needs. Once you two have met, further instructions and information will be sent from Mr. Klein, Louie’s father.

Of course, this task will not go without reward. We would not expect someone to accept such an undertaking without proper compensation. Thus, we are offering…

Aeluri’s eyes had nearly popped out of her head. That much jewel, just for hanging around with a rich little twerp for a while?! She jumped up and picked up Umbra - who had been sleeping nearby - and twirled in a circle with the feline squeezed in her arms. He let out an alarmed meow. “Umbra!” she had cried, “We’re gonna be so rich!”

Aeluri was surprised to see that the cafe had lacrima-powered sliding glass doors. They opened with a gentle hiss as she approached. This was definitely a wealthy side of Crocus if they had technology like that everywhere. As she entered, her mismatched eyes scoured the room for the man she was intended to meet. The letter hadn’t detailed much about Louie, so she didn’t know what he looked like. Certainly it would be easy to pick him out though.

It turned out to be extremely easy. Aeluri noticed a striking young blonde sitting at a nearby table, gold jewelry nearly overwhelming his outfit. His shirt had a few buttons popped open at the top, but Aeluri kept her eyes on his face. The young man looked annoyed. Not in the ‘something bad happened’ kind of way, but in the everyone is inconveniencing me and wasting my precious time’ kind of way. Aeluri knew he was impatiently waiting for her, even though she was perfectly on time.

The dark mage made her way towards the table, her heels clicking softly against the smooth tile flooring. Without a warning or introducing herself, Aeluri pulled out a chair for herself and promptly sat down. Staring intensely into Louie’s ruby eyes, she figured he wouldn’t be intimidated by her crimson and gold stare. She placed her hands on the table, left over right, and tilted her head slightly. “You must be Louie Calvin Klein,” she purred, tapping a blood-red fingernail against the table gently.

Louie was looking outside of the window for who he thought to be the one who was servicing him, except that he was indignantly unaware of basic information. Were they a man or a woman? Were they a fragile white or that exotic tan that Desiertians had? When they old enough to have wrinkles, or were they around his age? What kind of clothes would they be wearing? Surely this Count Julian whatshisname wouldn't send him anything less than the cream of the crop. Maybe a commoner at best, since Fiore was riddled with mediocrity, but it was hard to look for something he couldn't place a finger on if he saw it five inches from his face. Fortunately, he was burdened with far less of the searching than he had anticipated.

Skrrr went the other chair across from him, almost frightening Louie with the abrupt sound of the feet sliding against the floorboards. The one who descended into the chair was a well-dressed woman with long, black hair and mismatched eyes. She didn't smile or seemed to experience any modicum of pleasure in seeing him, as she knew who he was. Louie was, briefly, astounded.

"You must be Louie Calvin Klein," she said to him matter-of-factually. Louie looked at her before answering. His ruby eyes were kind but where his mind fell was an entirely different matter.

Who does she think she is approaching me like that? Did that Count not inform her of who I am? Or did he and she just couldn't understand her place? She must not be terribly bright, then. Louie's lips transformed into a friendly smile, At least she's not unpleasant to look at. Bon dieu. . . After Louie finished sifting through his personal impressions, he stood up to craft and feign another one. Reaching over the table, he gently grabbed the woman's hand and gingerly held it between his own. He wouldn't kiss it as she was most likely too dirty for him to even touch, but he did raise it to his mouth.

"Hello, mademoiselle. You are correct—I am Louie. And—well—can I just say how stunning you are? If I hadn't known better, I'd mistake you for jewelry myself! Oh!—was that not appropriate? It wasn't appropriate, was it?" Louie giggled a bit, his cheeks tinting into a light pink. He had been able to create such an authentic, well-liked persona over many years that he has acquired the ability to even create certain expressions that would normally seize someone involuntarily. He was, in fact, quite proud of his two-sidedness, even if it did question any sort of morality he had. This woman on the other hand, looked tough and thick-skinned. By the end of their meeting, Louie was pondering whether or not she'd open up to his flawlessness and end up like the rest.

The annoyance Aeluri had sensed on Louie was gone in an instant, replaced by a pleasant smile. He was hiding his impatience, she was sure. Perhaps he had been taught to keep a professional air about himself. The Count had mentioned that he was the son of a friend, so surely that meant he came from a wealthy or influential background.

Louie reached over and took her hand, raising it to his lips but no further. Aeluri was unnerved by the sudden contact, but didn’t flinch. Appearances were everything in these first few moments. She could feel that his skin was soft. No calluses or scars blemished his hands, probably from never working hard a day in his life.

Aeluri watched his body language with curious, ever-observant eyes. Some things that would hint at what he was thinking or feeling seemed… false, as if it had been rehearsed. His smile felt disingenuous. His ruby eyes gave him away, though. Despite the smile on his face, the perfect skin surrounding his eyes remained untouched, unwrinkled. He lacked what was known as a Duchenne smile. Aeluri saw through his act in an instant.

The man began to speak, his accent complementing his words with a flourish of a different language. Aeluri wasn’t familiar with it, but it was fairly easy to tell that he had addressed her respectfully. The dark mage raised an eyebrow as he dived straight into complimenting her looks. While she was quite vain and appreciated attention, Aeluri found his act almost comical. He seemed to think that the polite, charming, boyish persona would win her over. Perhaps on others, but Aeluri knew it was just a front. Was this what the Count had warned her about?

Aeluri gripped his left hand with her own, her fingernails digging into his skin ever so slightly. With a jerk, she pulled him close to speak quietly in his ear. “Listen, kid,” she began, emphasizing the difference in their age to make him feel inferior, which she now believed he was. The woman’s voice was smooth with an edge to it. “While I appreciate the flattery, both you and I know that’s not the way you really feel. Why don’t you drop the persona so we can get this meeting off on the right foot? I’m sure your father and the Count would be disappointed to hear that you ruined this opportunity.” Aeluri pulled away from him and released his hand. Leaning back in her chair, the dark mage waited for him to speak with a taunting crimson and gold gaze.

Eh? What just happened? Louie thought to himself, stunned into silence with disbelief of what just occurred. This woman had not only touched him but spoke to him not as the trash she was and not even as equals. He briefly looked at his wrist that her dirty fingers had grappled and then at her as she sat down, cool and collected. Contrarily, Louie was anything but. No way. Did she just. . . talk down to me? He took a deep breath, his other hand gingerly wrapping around his wrist and rubbing it. No—she spoke to him in such a tone granted only to people who believed themselves to be superior, and Louie was so astounded by this feat that he could not longer keep up his facade.

His crimson eyes looked less like rubies and more like blood as he glared down at the woman. While she sat down, he refused to mimic her insolence and continued to stand up defiantly. His stare was sharp and thin, yet wide as resentment and indignation filled them. He was almost so encaptured within his instant hatred that he couldn't say anything—and there's just so much to comment on! Her touching him, getting close to him like she did, addressing him as kid and not Mr. Klein, the threats! The insolence was so infuriating and something must be done about it!

"Who the hell do you think you are?" Louie began quietly, venomously, "Right foot? Is this some kind of joke? You came here thinking you were above me, Louie Calvin Klein, but you're just. . . trash. That's all you are. Trash." he cursed. His expression was dark and distant and his words were only loud enough for the woman to hear. But as he continued and began to lean over the table that separated them, his countenance gradually became more colorful. The way his lips screwed and eyes became lopsidedly large painted a sincere resentment across his unblemished canvas. "Garbage! Filth! Scum! The lowest of the low! A disgusting barbarian! The trashbin in my home is worth more than your small life and any of your pathetic achievements combined twelve times over and you think you can speak to me like that? Do you think you can violate my body and get out of this? Are you out of you mind?!"

Was it foolish bravery or simply just a lack of intelligence that brought her to this decision? The way her nails dug into his skin might have been a minor act of intimidation to the others of this country, but even though she had released her grip, Louie still felt the discomfort of the dents as if she were still holding him and felt violated! Molested—yes! Molested! That is what just unfolded! It is hard to resist touching a jewel in a display case, but it might have been too difficult for a gorilla like her!

Before he could contemplate her actions with such rage any more, it suddenly hit him. Louie stopped chastising her only to ponder one thing. She might be too ignorant to understand her place. I suppose I can't get terribly angry at her. She might be a pretty gorilla but a gorilla she still is. She doesn't know any better. he wondered to himself. At that realization, Louie slowly sat back down, folded one leg over the other, and leaned back into his chair and frowned as he collected himself. The pieces of his irredeemable character spilled over the table that divided them and briskly became whole once more.

"Apologize. If you get on your knees and apologize this instant, I'll pardon your atrocious behavior."

Aeluri simply watched as the younger man exploded. He looked like a kettle that had just reached its boiling point within seconds. She could practically picture the steam pouring from his ears in a cartoonish fashion. A reddened face and eyes wide with anger accompanied the imaginary kettle features.

Louie’s irate voice began to batter her with indignant words. Aeluri crossed one knee over the other, careful not to mess up her outfit too much. She interlocked her fingers over the front of the crossed knee. The vibrant red paint on her fingernails gleamed like little rubies against her darker crimson outfit. The dark mage let out a little sigh. When will this pretentious child shut up? she thought. She nearly looked at an invisible watch on her wrist to emphasize how bored she was, but that would probably only make Louie more angry.

He spewed on about how she was trash, scrum, a barbarian, worthless. The insults rebounded off of her iron-clad confidence without so much as leaving a dent. Aeluri had heard many of these things before, often from people of Louie’s status. The toxicity of the high class never failed to astound her. The cause was different for each person, but the manifestation was the same: vitriol upon those deemed less worthy. If she cared about anyone but herself, Aeluri might have been offended for the targets of such nastiness. That simply was not the case.

At last, he quieted down. The man relaxed back in his chair with a frown. Aeluri nearly spit out a “finally!” but held it back. While she cared not for his feelings, she did care about the exponential monetary gains that had been promised. She had to avoid aggravating him as much as she could, despite her intense desire to break the flimsy man in two.

That was, until the next words left his mouth. Aeluri doubled over, the air leaving her lungs in a massive “HA!” Apologize? Aeluri? As if!

“You want me to APOLOGIZE? On my KNEES? Nice one,” Aeluri said between laughter. The thought was exponentially amusing, so much so that she couldn’t contain her chuckling. She continued laughing for a good minute before regaining her composure. A few wheezes later and she was back to normal, sitting up straight.

“Kid, you can belittle me and wish all you want that you’re better than me, but let’s face reality. You’re stuck in an unfamiliar country, you’re running out of money, you have no direction, no connections, no future here. How long before you’re robbed? Beaten? Killed? You need guidance and protection. You need me.” Aeluri leaned forward, her gaze growing more intense with each word. “I can sense the contempt you feel for me right now. What can I say? I’m a pain in the ass. But I’m a pain that’s gonna bring your status back in Fiore. I’m a pain that’s gonna teach you how to survive in this chaotic country.”

Aeluri reached within the pocket of her blazer and withdrew a little envelope. It was smaller than standard size. Each edge was bordered in gold - real gold. A red wax seal held the flaps together. A fancy design was stamped into it, one that Aeluri didn’t recognize. Surely Louie would though. This was a last resort given to her by the Count. Should Louie prove to be difficult, the Count had told her to hand him the little letter. Though she had been asked not to open it, there was a fair guess at what was inside. Something that would change the way he was acting, something that may make him more agreeable.

“If my words aren’t enough to convince you,” Aeluri purred, holding out the envelope to Louie pinched between two fingers, “then maybe your father’s words can.”

Louie almost couldn't believe what he had just heard. The way the woman looked at him held a crushing weight, as if he were small. He hated feeling like that. It was a feeling he had vowed to never experience again, and yet he hesitated to refute her points. The money, his circumstances, everything she stated held some amount of truth to it, and not even Louie could deny it so blatantly.

The words stifled him as he became so visibly vexed by the woman's accusations. His foot was tapping the floor erratically, his attractive crimson eyes were full of resentment, and his countenance was strewn with so much exasperation that you could notice a vein bulging from his neck. He had never felt so humiliated! Not since he was a child! No one had refused him like that! No one had ever rejected his bountiful offers!

Louie began to crunch his teeth together, slowly losing composure after just regaining it. How dare she! How dare she! How dare she make a fool out of me! I'll make her PAY! he thought to himself, feeling himself come apart with each one of her words. The last person who talked to him this way hadn't lived to tell the tale. He hated this feeling

Suddenly, something more important than the insolate woman in front of him was presented. An envelope, from his father. "Father?! Give me that!" Louie nearly cursed, snatching the envelope away from the woman's hands, venom in his eyes as he hurried to open it. As he unfolded the letter inside, he couldn't believe what he was reading.

The venom that encaptured his face vanished and his complexion blanched in seconds. The color drained from his countenance and went a ghostly pale as his crimson eyes glossed over the letter again and again.

Abruptly, the young millionaire jumped up from his seat and let out a groan that alarmed everyone in the building. For a brief moment, the pride that he so frequently exhumed had disappeared, leaving only a flabbergasted teenager who couldn't believe what was reading. "HUUUH?!!" he exclaimed, gawking at the letter, "MY BUSINESSES?! MY SPENDING ACCOUNT?! MY ESTATES?!"

Louie didn't say what exactly would happen or was going to happen to everything he just shouted, but whatever it was, he had no control over it. To think that the first time his Father would ever reach out to him since his very conception would be in the form of a threat. To think he had this much power over Louie's very lifestyle!

A few more moments passed, and in those very few moments, Louie seemed to have gone through all five stages of grief! Every single thing that someone might have experienced when mourning passed over his expression in just seconds. And finally, acceptance.

He sat down, but this time, he was smirking haughtily. "I just had a brilliant idea! I'm stuck in this unfamiliar country, running out of my riches, and frankly, I need the guidance!" Louie began to snicker arrogantly, leaning back into his seat with his hands intertwined. He looked at the woman in front of him, "It is your lucky day, Ms. Gorilla! Starting today, you're going to be protecting me!"

As he said that, he crumpled the letter into a ball as tiny as he could make it, and dropped it into his drink. Despite the pleasure and a complacent smirk on his face, the resentment that went into that crumpling made it obvious where his head was at.

"No need to thank me for my benevolence. How could I refuse such a poor, unfortunate soul such as you? I truly am generous, you see!"

The color drained from Louie’s face so quickly it looked like he had encountered a vampire. Aeluri watched with amusement as he scanned over the paper. She had no clue what it said, but it seemed to have a profound effect on him. The blonde leapt from his chair, shouting about all his possessions that seemed to be threatened. Whatever his father had threatened was serious. Aeluri nearly giggled.

She swiftly hid her amusement as Louie settled back down in his chair. “Oh, you’ve changed your mind? Good~” she replied, the edge of her mouth raising into a subtle smirk. “I’m glad to see you’ve come to your senses.” Mismatching eyes watched him crumple the letter up and plop it in his drink. There was malice in those movements, ever so slight. She could tell he was fuming on the inside.

Aeluri let out a pent-up laugh. “Benevolent? Sure, whatever helps you sleep at night.” This man was quite the clown. She had laughed more today than any time recently, and she wasn’t the kind to show amusement so brazenly. It was comical how highly he thought of himself. The dark mage had never met someone so uptight.

“So,” Aeluri continued, placing her fingertips together and leaning her elbows on the table. “I want to know just how difficult you’re going to be. Do you have magic? Do you know any self-defense? How much do you know about Fiore?”
