The moment Izou jumped off the carriage, the driver didn’t even say anything to the mage and instantly bolted, lashing the two horses driving the carriage with his whip. The horses complied without any resistance, their animal senses telling them that this was not a place to stay for long. The man had done it to return a favor to Izou, since he was also on the way to another village. He had purposely made a detour to bring the mage here, and with the deed repaid, nothing else had to be said.

It was by far one of the weirdest mission that Izou had ever picked up. The mission had stated that a child with the power of a mage way beyond her age had taken up residence here. Records had also stated that the kid had massacred a small but dark guild when she was testing her powers. While Dies Irae appreciated her good work in dealing with the dark guild, the massacre was still something that they had to investigate. The Magic Council had plans to bring her into their fold, seeking to mold her into either one of them or a killing machine. And this was the reason why Izou had taken up the job. If she was too much of an anomaly, and a risk to the world should the Magic Council get their hands on her, Izou wouldn’t hesitate to take her life. Even if she was a kid.

Izou’s face scrunched up as he sniffed the air as a light breeze blew by. The air was stale, and as it blew by, the stench of death was very much apparent. He wasn’t a stranger to such scents but it also wasn’t something that he could get used to. As he moved forward towards the village that had been called Haunted Village, the clothes on the mage began to transform as two discs of bright orange light appeared around his midsection and then split up as one moved upwards while the other downwards.

When the orange light finally dissipated, Izou was fully garbed in a dark blue jacket that borders on black, Shattered Divinity and his gauntlets Fuji. While it looked casual and too flimsy to be any good in battle, Shattered Divinity was crafted from the best materials and offered the best protection he could want.

But he hadn’t travelled far. Another member of Dies Irae was joining him for the job as well, so the knight errant waited patiently in front of the gates leading into the village. The entire village was surrounded by a wall that stood as tall as Izou, with the lower half consisting of bricks and the top half being metal grilles, with a pair of creaky, rusting iron gates leading into it. Izou sat down on a rock by the gates.

This wasn’t a mission that JJ was particularly happy to take at first. It involved a child who, according to the information given to him, had gotten her hands on powerful magic several units above what a person her age should possess. She had been reported eliminating an entire dark guild with her bare hands, and now, she was last seen near the Haunted Village up at the north-eastern reaches of Fiore. The Magic Council wanted her held up as she posed a huge, unstable danger and had been seen attacking random passers-by who never got to return back to their families again. The Cursed Lands where the village was located were notorious for bringing up just about the worst kinds of entities in the world, so it definitely lived up to its name if a girl like the child mentioned decided to stay in that area. Was she even human? Who was she, and how did she get this far? Where were her parents, and why did she possess so much magic?

The Council had ordered her arrest at once. And if it was too risky to bring her in by force, then the same Council permitted her execution. JJ couldn’t help it, but he was continuously reminded of how his previous, short-term teacher - Al-Kidra - had grabbed and killed a random child in the middle of a street back in Desierto, only to explain that the child would grow up to oppress his parents. Yes, the Demon Slayer remembered his words very clearly…

‘A child who oppresses his parents will have no qualms oppressing everyone else…’

Maybe this girl had gone through the same… if Al-Kidra was here, then the elder demon would have been in a hurry to end her life. JJ, however…

There was still the chance of arresting her. She was likely not of age, and what was wrong with giving a child another chance at redemption? It wasn’t like JJ could see into the future like his temporary master. Could his master even do so, or was that bluff?

There was someone whispering to him.

JJ was approaching the gate to the Haunted Village and could quickly spot Izou if he wasn’t occupied with looking around himself, trying to find the source of those whispers. It sounded like giggles from a young, little girl, and words like ‘have you come to play?’ and the likes brushed across his hearing for a brief instance and got his guards up a little. He was dressed in his DI Uniform and was hoping to get this done with.

“H-Hey… Hello. My name is Jariel Jareem,” he greeted the black-haired DI Mage who was sitting on a rock, likely waiting for JJ’s arrival, “I am… new in Dies Irae. Anyway, she might be in there right now.” He walked up to the rusty iron gates and rested a hand on one of them while closing his eyes and sniffing the air. The iron gate that he was touching had formed a round space of purity around where his hand was planted, and the purified iron shone brightly to reflect the rather weak rays from the sun that was hidden behind grey clouds.

“… Can you hear those whispers, too?” JJ asked his companion with a voice tainted a bit with worry, “It doesn’t smell like she’s been here recently, but I definitely hear her. I don’t know if it’s because of my magic, but she must be right here-“ He pushed the iron gate open with his hand upon ending his sentence, and to his shock, a sword was floating right for his eyeball!

Reflexively, he clapped his hands on the blade, but it didn’t stop floating towards him! Thinking that he was too late, he bent his head back, but the sword followed suit. He hadn’t yet realized that the sword was actually going through his head without harming him in the slightest, but this was all just an illusion that he hadn’t realized yet. Calming down again by adjusting his sharp breathing, he looked back at Izou and asked:

“… Do you see the sword embedding itself into my skull, or is my mind playing numbers with me?”

    Kessicia

    C Rank

    Dies Irae

    Church of Free Will Priestess

Kessicia wasn’t in her right mind.

That wasn’t an entirely fair thing to say about her. She still obliged the laws of Dies Irae and followed through on the responsibilities that were imparted to her. And to a point, she still held ceremonies for the Lord of Light and Creation and whispered the prayers to him and enacted the glory of Free Will upon those that sought her out. But there was a… darkness in her gaze, a cloudiness that covered her usual luster and excitement. It was a fog that wasn’t real but seemed to metaphorically be there, paling her vision as much as death had done.

She had died in that cave, fighting off the Dark Ones with whatever might she could muster. Her injuries had been too substantial and the last thing she remembered was uttering the world of her lover before passing on. Yet before her soul could depart from her body and travel to the planes beyond, it had been… stopped. Bits and pieces of the experience only came to her late at night or if she had imbibed a certain amount of liquor. Two beings had reached out from beyond the veil, their hands taking her arms and pulling her towards them. But these weren’t angels sent from her Lord to usher her to heaven -- they were deities of their own realms. Their words were muddled but she could distinctly make out the word vassal, whatever that meant.

When she awoke, it was within the morgue. Panicking within the dark confines of her tube, she had crawled out screaming. How she had returned to life was beyond her and certainly beyond those that had discovered her there, crying in a corner as she hugged her legs to her naked chest. What had made things worse was the inquiries -- for as she discovered, they didn’t recognize her. When she was given a mirror to look at, after explaining numerous times that she was Kessicia, she found a strange face before her. Gone was her violet hair and golden eyes and in its place was black and blue locks with sapphire gems making up her vision. Her skin tone was the same but even her body had slimmed down some, as if she had lost weight during her time in death. It was only after she displayed her magic and imparted knowledge that only she could know that she was deemed to be telling the truth.

She should have been thankful -- she had been given a second chance at life. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that the Lord she served, the one of Light that guided all of creation, hadn’t been the one to gift her such a blessing. Who were the beings that she hadn’t been able to make out? What was a vassal? And why had she been sent back to the land of the living? The questions weighed upon her and frankly, they even depressed her. If creatures were able to resurrect those that had passed, why hadn’t the Lord of Light done so for her? Was he truly satisfied with letting her die?

Kessicia did the best she could to shake the feelings by throwing herself into work. When she saw an opportunity to join up with several new members on one of their jobs, she took it without even thinking. Dressed in the robes that distinguished her as a member of Dies Irae, she hopped on board the wagon that had arrived for her and awaited the driver’s departure. The Haunted Village was a bit of a drive from where she was but she simply stared out the window in a daze, lost in her thoughts and wonderings as the background rolled on past her vision. Soon enough, the carriage came to an abrupt stop, with the man calling out and letting her know they had arrived. As she hopped out, she spotted a pair of men that fit the description she was seeking. One of them was already at the gate and, by the looks of it, was having a bit of a situation. He was bobbing and weaving as if some invisible force was trying to attack him.

“Greetings,” she said, putting on a bold and flirtatious face, the one that she was far more comfortable with before her death. “I knew I’d be working with fellow guild members but no one told me they’d be so handsome.” Even if she wasn’t feeling as peppy as normal, she wasn’t going to deny the chance to take in the sight of the two extremely attractive men. She glanced over at JJ in concern. “Are you alright, dear? You looked a little panicked a moment ago.”

At the sound of footsteps crunching on the gravel and loose stones on the ground, Izou lifted his head to witness the arrival of one of his partners for the job. Like him, the young man was from Dies Irae as well, but the expression on his face was distracted. Izou’s brows furrowed slightly as he continued observing Jariel as the young man walked up to the rusted gates that led into the Haunted Village, resting on hand on the gates. The furrowed brows were raised when Izou noticed the portion of the gates that Jariel had touched turned pristine.

“I’m Izou, relatively new to DI as well. Wait, you can hear her?” the black-haired mage asked in surprise as he stood up from the stone. Just as he had finished speaking, Jariel had suddenly clapped his hands right in front of his face and even tilted his head backwards. Bewildered by the sudden and weird movement, Izou took one step forward and found himself kicking over a smaller stone, causing him to trip. Instead of moving forward towards Jariel, he shifted to the side, crashing into the rusted gates with his left shoulder.

And the moment he touched the gates, Izou let out a gasp as he looked at Jariel again.

“Both. You have a sword stabbed straight into your skull. And it’s probably not only your mind playing numbers on you,” Izou answered drily as he looked at his own body, ending with a stare at the sword pierced right through his ribs.

Just as Izou was about to try grabbing at the illusionary sword in his chest, his attention was caught by an alluring voice and his eyes twinkled for a second before it disappeared. The dark-skinned girl, with her flirtatious expression, had definitely outweighed the sword sticking out from his chest at the moment as Izou watched the girl walk over to the two of them. Unknowingly, a small smirk had appeared at the side of Izou’s mouth as he gave her entire body a full glance as she neared them.

Even in the doom and gloom of the Haunted Village, the beauty of the approaching girl wasn’t dulled in the slightest. In fact, it seemed to have made her shine even more. But Izou wasn’t someone to share his feelings so easily. He was interested in her, but so far, it was only skin-deep. Only time together would inform him if this was a girl he should try to know better.

Just as Izou was about to open his mouth to speak, the knight errant caught a glimpse of something white and large from the corner of his eyes. His expression hardened, and he instantly threw himself back from the gate that he was still leaning on. A ball of flames gathered in his left hand and the black-haired mage threw it forward. A white sickle, wickedly sharp, sliced through the air right where Izou’s throat would have been a few seconds ago as he dropped to the ground on his back as the ball of orange flames turned into a bird and flew right through the white skeletal figure.

When the fire bird swept through the skeletal figure, the illusion blurred and then vanished into thin air, along with the sword stuck in Izou’s chest. Propping himself up with his left hand and then standing back up as he dusted off the back of his pants, Izou turned to look at his partners.

“Did you also just see a white skeleton with a scythe? I think our mission’s started,” the black-haired mage announced. Then he looked at the dark-skinned girl with a grin. “I’m Izou.”

The sword phased right through his face without harming him, making JJ wonder if he was already under an illusion from… well, most likely the target of their mission. That must’ve meant that she was nearby, trying to play numbers with him. Izou had stood up and reacted with assurance; he could also see the sword trying to penetrate JJ’s face, which meant that the girl reported to have wiped out an entire guild was already aware of their presence here at the gate. “She already knows that we’re here… I-Izou, your chest!” From Izou’s chest, JJ spotted another sword stick out as if he was being stabbed from behind by a knight. However, his guildmate seemed more troubled with his foothold and with JJ himself than with his own illusion.

They had just arrived here, and the little girl was already playing numbers with them… and he thought that only the two of them would undergo this annoying mission, but things changed when a certain woman greeted them.

A dark-skinned lady, walking a very eye-catching stripe of blue across her jet-black hair and accompanied by quite beautiful features, joined them in front of the gate. JJ hadn’t met her before, but he caught on that she was a guildmate of his. Hopefully, three Dies Irae Wizards would be enough to hand the targeted girl in to the Magic Council. “D-Don’t you see the-“ JJ was about to ask, curious as to why she couldn’t see the sword trying to end his life, illusionary. It brought him back to focus on the sword itself, which had… disappeared.

His face was safe, for now. Did the girl who was, 100 percent, hiding somewhere in this area come up with something else? Given the reported description of her being rather young, he had an idea that she was most likely going to be very naïve despite her achievements. Again, more than often, kids were unpredictable and playful.

“O-Oh… sorry about that, sayyidat-“ JJ was about to reply again to the lady in front of him who showed concern for his previous behavior, but Izou - who already had been about to stumble on his own, illusionary sword - suddenly threw himself back from the gate and announced that a white skeleton with a scythe attacked him. It looked like the Grim Reaper itself, and JJ too was about to charge a spell in his right hand; said hand blurred up in a sharp, intense light for a very brief moment, but once the illusion died out, he cancelled the charged spell and let the light on his hand fade away like the light from a car’s lamps driving away.

It was clear that she played with them, for these illusions hadn’t harmed them in any way yet. Before she could muster up any new ideas, JJ found it necessary to enter the deserted village.

Greetings were expected, and JJ followed suit after Izou: “I’m Jariel… I prefer JJ.” He tipped his cap and approached the gate once again, planting his hand on the handle, “I believe that she already knows that we’re here. She might have some more games up her sleeves than these illusions…” With that said, he pushed the gate open and revealed the empty village… and oh boy, was it empty. At first sight, not a single, living soul could be seen or heard, not even with JJ’s Demon Slayer Hearing. The white skeleton with the scythe returned, but JJ had broken the code and stood completely still as he saw the scythe pass right through his throat without harming him the least. The illusion blurred away quickly as if it realized that this trick wouldn’t work twice, and despite the fact that the target and possible enemy was a child, she probably wasn’t dumb enough to commit the same, useless method more than twice.

    Although, he hoped so.

“I could’ve sworn that I heard her right before…” JJ spoke as he turned his head to face his two guildmates, “You two do know about the girl we’re searching for, right? How in the world can a small girl cause a genocide and pull these sickening tricks on us…?” JJ was unaware of the chaotic forces in this world that could bend his view on everything in every way, and he held quite strong morals and ideals about the young. These ideals were implanted in him through his upraising in Desierto, which clashed horribly with what he had heard about this girl…

For him, it didn’t make sense. That was what terrified him the most about this quest, and that was what caused him to clench his fist until it vibrated.

    Kessicia

    C Rank

    Dies Irae

    Church of Free Will Priestess

Unfortunately, Kessicia hadn’t caught sight of the spectral weapons that had seemingly impaled her partners without true injury. All she had managed to see as she arrived was the man in the hat acting a bit strange, as if he was plagued by a bee or some kind of annoying insect. But even  the one closest to her, the other handsome, long-haired man, was seemingly off base as well. She doubted that it was simply an unlucky circumstance that had made them both so bothered. As she walked up to the man that had noticed her first, the air around them shimmered. Izou made a diving leap backwards, launching himself away from the gate of the community. A ball of fire erupted from his hand and shot into the air, passing through the wind easily as it transformed into a bird. It carried itself for a bit before disappearing completely.

He asked if they had noticed a white skeleton with a scythe, apparently the target of his fiery spell. Kess frowned, despite the man flashing her a grin and introducing himself. “I can’t say that I noticed anything skeletal at all -- both of you boys are quite filled out,” Despite the compliment, she was genuinely concerned about the fact that they were both haunted. Maybe it had something to do with the mission? She knew that there was a little girl who was using some magic to cause a lot of pain and had seemingly killed a fair number of people as well. A true worry that certainly fell within the rights of Dies Irae to handle.

After the two had handled the illusions that were targeting them, they each took their turn in introducing themselves. The one wearing the hat was named Jariel but preferred to be called JJ, which suited her fine. JJ was easier to say in combat. The other was Izou, who was far more receptive to her, managing to pop back and forth between concern over their situation and an unmistakable intrigue in the human succubus. “Kessicia. Recently…” she paused for a moment. Revived seemed like an overcomplicated word to use that would entail having to explain further. She’d rather not revisit her situation so soon after having experienced it. “Returned to the ranks. I was temporarily away but very happy to have come back to partner with you two.” She took a moment to look them both over again, a smile creeping onto her face.

JJ explained that there was a good chance their target was already aware of the party’s invasion of her funhouse. He surmised that if her opening greetings to the two men were viable, there was a good chance she would summon more to hinder their process to her. He pushed open the gate and revealed the village beyond, which had fallen into such a state of dilapidation that it barely counted as a home for a former community. She walked a few steps forward to look in, putting her hand on the side of the gate so she could lean around the edge.

“It seems she’s--” Her words were cut off as her eyes turned over just in time to see a flying skeleton, wielding a scythe, slash at JJ’s throat. Her breath caught in her throat, silencing the terrified scream that had tried to erupt from it. Her instinct to try and save him was far too late… but, as it seemed, was also unneeded. The weapon slid through the air harmlessly, passing through his flesh in an instant before the illusion started to dissipate. Oh how her heart was pounding, the terrifying notion that one of her comrades was nearly beheaded right before her. The hand of death was near and now she could feel it, its bony fingers playing upon her shoulder in a mocking fashion. It was as if the Reaper was reminding her just how close she had been to falling into his grasp.

She took a moment to calm herself, inhaling and exhaling slowly before she managed to relax to a half-way comfortable place. “Well…” she said between pants of air. “Now I can see what all the fuss was about.” She stated her thoughts clearly and confidently but no doubt both of them could see she was a bit shaken up. JJ spoke up once more, turning his head to look at them. He inquired if they knew about their target and wondered aloud how one child could cause such pain and agony, even upon her own people? “Unfortunately JJ, the world can be a cruel place. I, myself, am a former slave from Desierto who suffered at the hands of many masters over the years. It is possible this girl was simply born with a wicked thread within her body -- or perhaps mistreatment played a part in her corruption. It is not an easy task we take but with guidance, I’m sure--” Her words slid off again for a moment. A natural place for her to use her faith as a guiding hand, something gave her pause over it. Instead, she cleared her throat. Together we’ll be able to handle the problem without much issue. Here, let me imbue you both with some defense. I’m not sure if you two are aware of my magic but I’m mainly responsible for healing. My methods are… a little unorthodox, I admit.”

She would reach out and trail her hand over either one of their shoulders, a motion that while friendly, also carried a slight move of sultry desire. A film of magical energy would form over their bodies but at the same time, a warmness would set upon in their cores. Considering they were of notable strength in their own abilities, they would not fall slave to the sexual images and fantasies that normally came upon those that Kessicia blessed. But should they choose to take a moment to inwardly glance, they may feel a naughty thought or two if they allow it. With the men properly guarded, she extended her focus to herself, summoning her whip to her hand and untangling the length so that it hung limply beside her. Now prepared, she gave the two of them a curt nod.

After Jariel, or JJ, had introduced himself, he had proceeded to push the gates open to drive his point through the two other members of the party. As the gates swung open on its rusted hinges, the empty village that laid beyond it. It was spooky and the hairs on the back of Izou’s neck was mildly standing on end, but that wasn’t going to change his intention. Now that he had been exposed to the magic of the witch child, and for knowing that it was an illusion, he didn’t even flinch when the same skeletal wraith that had attacked him earlier launched another surprise attack on JJ. Izou’s eyes narrowed as he gave some thought to JJ’s words. Kessicia had gave her opinions as well, catching Izou slightly by surprise when she revealed how she had been a slave before. But this was Earthland. Anything could happen to anyone, and what really matter was what one made of their own circumstances.

“My theory is much simpler. I think she just doesn’t have any control over her powers. In any of the cities or towns we live in, learning magic would pave the way for a better life. But in a rural village, without any guidance, it might be a curse. The apparitions that appeared the moment we touched the gates could be a defense mechanism to drive people away from approaching her, to keep her from harming them,” Izou spoke up, offering his own sentiments. While his words may make it seem like he was a simple person, Izou was by no means unintelligent. He just preferred to keep a simple outlook on things. “But that’s just my theory. There’s no ruling out what either of you think could be any truer than what I said.”

Izou nodded when Kessicia had offered to cast some sort of defensive spell on them. His body went instantly stock still the moment the dark-skinned female’s hand trailed over his shoulder. The raven-haired mage quickly erased the split second look of surprise on his face with a more casual grin when Kessicia was done. A warm feeling had bloomed from within him after she was done with the spell, and for a moment, the casual grin on Izou’s face faltered as he expended some mental effort in pushing down on emotions inappropriate to the situation they were in.

“Interesting,” Izou remarked coolly as he gave Kessicia a quick glance before flipping into business mode again. “We won’t be figuring out standing here. Let’s go in.”

While the earlier attacks had been mere illusions, Izou wasn’t dumb enough to assume that they will only be facing illusions from here on out. They were after a child with power great enough to massacre an entire dark guild, regardless of her intention. A burst of flames erupted in his right hand before elongating and molding itself into a spear. The spear of flames held its overall silhouette, giving their surroundings an orange hue. Izou took the initiative to take the first step into the village, boots crunching heavily on the wet soil. The moment he took his first step, disembodied voices began to surround him. He couldn’t make any sense of the words that were being spoken, but the voices spoke in a low and rapid pattern. Every now and then, a child’s laughter could be heard amidst the speaking voices.

However, what had really stopped him was the figures standing around in the middle of the village. He counted almost twenty of them, their flesh rotting, eyes hollow, standing limply with bad posture, but definitely looking in the direction of the trio.

“Do you guys think those are illusions too?” Izou asked the other two as he cocked his head slightly to the left, as if it would help him discern them further.

She… spoke wisely. And with experience in being dealt with injustice herself, if she spoke truly about her past as a slave in Desierto… she most likely did. It was funny how things worked; JJ had it rough in his homeland too, but here he was right in front of a former slave of a wicked mahrajal raqiiq. He praised her in his thoughts, praying that she would never see a chain around her hands again and that her wrongdoers would face a severe punishment for what they might have done to her in the burning sands.

While Kessicia thought that the young girl had been grown up in the godforsaken, wrong neighborhood, Izou’s explanation was simpler and common; it was likely that she was on a rampage, unable to controll her powers. The Magic Council could have the objective to take her in to learn more about her powers and to, maybe, train her. It wasn’t too farfetched to think that, or at least that was what the Demon Slayer imagined.

Ah, a defensive spell would be highly necessary in case if the illusions suddenly decided to step into reality without them noticing. It was clever of Kess to do that, and by her explanation, she focused on supportive spells - mainly healing. There was… nothing more he knew about her magic, though, so this would be a first. As her hand rested on his shoulder and channeled her magic into him, JJ felt a tinge of warmth stab him in the gut. Then, as quickly as the warmth came, a white contour blinked over his skin and resulted in small fragments of crystallized light to flicker away like dust.

… Wait, why did my magic do that?

That was uncalled for. His magic weakened her spell, so the defensive properties on him weren’t as magnified as Izou’s. Was she using Demon Magic? Or was she a demon? He couldn’t even tell by her appearance only; she looked like… well, he hadn’t really seen anyone carry her beauty, but she looked like a definite, human being to him. So that was what she meant by ‘unorthodox’, huh?

“… S-Sorry, I thin my Demon Slayer Magic is reacting negatively to your spell. I’m not a seasoned wizard yet, so excuse my lacks,” he apologized to her, tipping his cap down so the front would cover his eyes. It was a little embarrassing to straight up tell people ‘hey, uh, I’m not really good at magic yet, please be patient with me’. His cheeks were still reddened by the previous emotion swelling up in him, though...

He walked in along with Izou, regardless of his level of defense. The young girl, Lilith’s magic would have to beat back his Demon Slayer Magic if she wished to harm any of them, so the odds looked to be in his favor. Of course, this depended on how he would perform, but he was a strict trainer of his self, body and mind, and he wanted to see where he stood. He had yet to fully understand just how effective Demon Slayer Magic would be against Dark Magic, but it turned out that he would get his chance to check that out when a line of classic zombies in front of them.

“I can smell those pretty well… they can’t be illusions,” JJ replied to Izou. The Demon Slayer would lift two fingers up and aim at their heads, then fire off sharply bright, white rays of light to snipe their heads off with. These small, concentrated bursts of magic were getting easier overtime, so he was quite satisfied with the result. Each shot caused the points hit on the zombies to burn up and dissolve their heads and torsos. About 5 of them were taken down like this before JJ smelled… burnt wool.

From the corner of his eye, he saw a little girl peek over the edge of a deserted house. It must’ve been her! He spoke up while lunging forward: “I just saw her! She’s hiding over at that mans- WAH!” His sudden shout and leap backwards was triggered by a spear that had planted itself firmly on the ground right where his body was a second ago. On his poor butt dusted by the ground, JJ looked at the spear and looked up, seeing the clouds rain down death upon them.

Kessicia didn’t claim to know exactly what was happening with the girl and the village, merely operating off of one theory. Izou and JJ listened before the former offered up his own thoughts, his own belief far more simple than her own. He estimated that it was plausible that the girl simply didn’t have control over her powers, as the location they were in wasn’t apt for teaching one how to control their magic. He believed that the illusions may have been creations of hers to drive people away so they didn’t get hurt. It was possible but there was also the possibility that she was enjoying scaring people. They didn’t really have much of an answer and wouldn’t until they had the girl before them.

After the discussion, the succubus-human offered to imbue them with barrier spells to better aid them in the coming battles. Her hands found their forms, sliding gently across their broad and strong shoulders, a slight flutter in her stomach halted as best she could. It was hard for her to forget the succubi nature that made up her soul but she usually had a better control of it. Perhaps her insecurity had shaken her domination over the feral nature of her desires, allowing moments of weakness. Luckily she was able to rein it in before she said or did anything that was far too inappropriate for the battlefield. Izou’s body took to the magic just fine but JJ’s seemed to have an adverse reaction. A moment after her hand left his shoulder, her spell was dispersed and negated completely.

He was quick to apologize, explaining that his magic was Demon Slaying. That earned him a look of understanding from the Priestess and she smiled evenly. “Ah, that would explain it then,” she said, nodding softly. “No need to apologize, JJ. My magic comes from my soul, that is fused with that of a succubus. While I, myself, am not a demon, my spells do contain the same Curse that many demonic creatures utilize. It’s understandable that it would be rendered null by your magic. I imagine you gentlemen don’t need much buffing anyways -- you both seem strong in your own right,” she commended them both, giving them both a far lustier look than she meant to. It increased a bit as Izou brought forth flames and, from it, summoned a spear of impressive size.

Shaking off the sensation, she started to move with her comrades, her whip trailing lightly behind her as she kept an eye all around them. But it was Izou that spoke up, bringing their attention to the middle of the village and the… creatures that stood in it. They looked to once be human but their forms were rotted, their flesh falling off their limbs and their bones weak enough that they could barely stay on their feet. But they were there; a full group and their sunken, ill-formed eyes were staring right at the group.

“I don’t believe they are,” Kessicia answered Izou’s question as her grip on her whip tightened slightly. JJ confirmed her suspicions, explaining that he could smell them well enough to make him believe they weren’t spectral. As if to test his theory, he took careful aim with his hand and unleashed a set of bright, shining strings of light that slammed into five of the creatures. The magic combusted within their torsos, destroying the upper half of their forms and dropping them to the ground easily.

Just as she was preparing to move in to assist him, JJ’s attention turned to another sight. He yelled out, saying that he had spotted the girl they were seeking but was swiftly cut off as a spear pierced the ground right where he had just been. It had come from straight up in the sky and as the succubus-human turned her attention upwards, she spotted several more weapons already descending towards them. “Quick!” she responded, reaching out to touch both of them on the back. Immediately they would feel lighter, as if gravity’s hold on them had released enough to give them a speed boost. Unfortunately, her acting so quickly, she hadn’t been able to fully bury the sensual energy that came from it and it was possible one or both of them could receive a dirty thought that she may have had about the two of them.

But she couldn’t focus on that as she pointed towards the nearest house, rearing her whip back and sending it flying at the structure. It tore through the wood paneling easily, ripping down the barrier between them and the inside. She would follow them inwards, a spear barely stabbing over her shoulder and ripping her tunic and a small sliver on her flesh. She rolled inside and hopped to her feet, whip spiraling around her as she prepared for the creatures outside that had started to move towards the house they occupied.

Izou grinned at the unhesitating reaction of his teammates, as JJ lifted his fingers up, aiming at the zombies and proceeded to shoot bright rays of light at the targets. The demon slaying nature of his magic, seemed to do especially well against the undead monsters, blasting through the zombies with wicked ease. Whatever remained of the five zombies that took the rays of light head collapsed to the ground, before their situation took another drastic turn towards bad. Izou sidestepped to the left, at the same time JJ had fallen backwards to the ground, the sharp whistling of a spear falling through the air and then piercing into the ground where JJ had stood earlier. The spear trembled, shaking off the residual momentum of its descent which got the rest of the team looking upwards at the sky. The shout from JJ about seeing the girl they were after hadn’t gone unnoticed but Izou was much more concerned about their current situation, when he saw that the entire sky above them were spears. The sharp tips of the spears glinted dangerously despite the gloom and doom of the haunted village.

The soft touch of Kessicia’s hand against his back granted him a sudden lightness to his body, before the female mage pulled it back, uttering just a single word to get her message across. A weird sensation, something that shouldn’t have come up during this ordeal stunned the knight errant for a short second, but before he could place it, Izou had dispelled any other miscellaneous thoughts. Izou gave a glance over his shoulders to see Kessicia hastening away, a whip in hand as she charged towards one of the huts. It was the most obvious thing to do, especially when they were now facing attacks from not just their sides but from the skywards as well. While the spell that Kessicia had cast on the two male mages would increase their agility, there was no way that just running would get them out of this rain of spears.

Focusing magic energy into his arms, orange flames rolled down his arms, taking on the form of flaming feathers shrouding his arms. With Kessicia leading the way to safety, Izou kept himself at the back of the trio. For the time being, he had put the zombies aside, their relatively slow shuffle towards the trio lowering their threat level as compared to the spears hovering above their heads. Izou moved behind JJ as they approached Kessicia who had already broken a hole in the wall of a hut with a swipe of her whip. Flames built up around his left fist, the flames taking on the shape of his fist as though the fist of a giant. With a roar, Izou punched upwards, the gigantic fist of flames surging forward to clash with the spears that floated above their path of retreat.

The spears in the range of his spell was blasted away, sending them flying away and dropping any other place near them. It was a small win, but victory against the overpowered young witch was still too early to expect. Izou stormed into the hut after the other two Dies Irae members. Izou had noticed that Kessicia took a glancing cut from one of the spears that had fallen earlier, moving to her back with his right hand wreathed in gentle orange flames.

“Stay still,” Izou said as he held out his hand to her shoulder, resting his palm on her skin, allowing the flames to stop the bleeding and eventually heal the wound. When the wound had finally closed, Izou nodded satisfactorily and walked away from her, before turning his attention to Jariel.

“JJ, are you okay?” Izou questioned as he gave him a look over from head to toe, to see if there were any visible injuries.
