[Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya) Empty [Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya)

Post by Akeya 23rd April 2019, 9:10 am

    Job Details:

The common belief with dragons was that they were obsessed with treasure, piling it up into large hoardes which they then slept upon and guarded with more ferocity than a mother protecting her young. Steal even one piece, no matter how small or insignificant, and the dragon would immediately notice and chase you to the next world if that was what it took to take back what it saw as its property and exact revenge on those who thought they could steal from a dragon and get away with it.

This wasn't entirely wrong, but it wasn't entirely correct either. There were actually a lot of dragons who had a strange interest in baubles. Of course the why was something one could debate about, because as most individuals with adequate amounts of gray matter could figure out gold and the like were mostly valuable in a culture where they had an assigned value, and dragons weren't known for either mingling with others or willingly parting with anything they'd added to their hoard. Their piles of treasure often included magic items but there were too many mundane objects for magic to be the main motivator either.

And as the rich could attest, there might be some novelty in sleeping on filthy lucre but it couldn't exactly be called comfortable. Just because a dragon was covered in tough scales didn't mean they suddenly were completely immune to having sharp and hard objects constantly poking their stomach while they slept.

Akeya's personal guess would be that, rather than monetary value or aesthetics, it was more a combination of status and sheer boredom. Dragons often spent years on end doing very little since there weren't many things they had to fear and also not a lot of things for them to desire. Collecting shiny stuff might be nothing more than a way to pass the time, and beyond that a dragon with a large hoard filled with rare objects could boast about it.

But there were also a lot of dragons who couldn't care less about hoards. Akeya considered herself one of those. She had an eye for beauty and a thirst for knowledge, but neither of those drove her to throw it all onto a pile. Partially because objects carrying either beauty or knowledge tended to react poorly to that kind of treatment. Scrolls and paintings would tear, statues and tablets would become covered in scars and people needed space to breathe.

So far as Akeya was concerned the best equivalent of her hoard was a library, a much more practical method for collecting as much knowledge as possible in one location without making disorganized heaps where you'd have to dig for days to find that one book you were looking for. Which is why she was most often found in the library.

Today was such a day, although this time she had some deeper motivation.

As usual nearly all the lights were turned off, only a few light lachrima orbs glowing faintly so they cast more shadows than actual illumination. Akeya was pacing back and forth, a habit she usually frowned upon for being distracting but unable to stop her clawed feet from moving in a pattern. Before her several tables had been moved to form a semi-circle, and each table had several scrolls and books placed upon them, some of them open/unrolled while others had been closed again. On a nearby wall a large map was covered in many lines and other symbols, forming a maze which would leave any other person confused as there was no clear indicator what the purpose was.

Other than Akeya there was nobody else in the area. Nobody except for three tiny dragons, one of them sitting on top of the assassin's head while two others were flying around, enjoying the fact that the library had some nice high ceilings allowing for plenty of aerial maneuvering for such small creatures. Their iridescent scales glimmered in the faint light of the lachrimas, their direct surroundings obscured by an otherworldly dance of light and darkness.

The twilight dragoness wasn't one to outwardly show when she was disturbed, other than annoyance and some level of concern or startlement. But this time around there was nobody to watch and she had much to think about, so a frown adorned her olive-skinned face and her claws clacked against the hard floor in a regular pattern as she moved with more briskness than was normal for her. The library was well away from the outside and while there was adequate ventilation that those inside wouldn't end up feeling like they were breathing dust the air was still a lot less energetic than most other locations, so the sound of her footsteps carried far.

Akeya's concerns could be summed up with one word, a word which had haunted Fiore and the entirety of Earthland many times in the past and which for some reason kept coming back time and time again:

    Acnologia.

The supposed king of dragons (a derisive snort escaped the dragoness's nasal cavities), a calamity in his own right who appeared to have no purpose other than to appear, wreak havoc and disappear once more. He had existed for so long that almost nobody even questioned why any longer: he was as natural for most as erupting volcanoes or hurricanes. Rather than complain why he destroyed things and where he came from it was better to prepare yourself for the possibility that he'd visit your home next. At least that way your energy would be poured into something useful rather than whining.

But in recent years Akeya had picked up on a strange pattern. Strange and very disturbing, because while she was not sure what the exact explanation was the first theory she came up with would have some dire implications for both the present and the future. She stepped forward and lifted a book she'd already read through several times, then put it down again as she'd done before. It was a book that detailed the exploits of Heero, a mage who for quite some time had been heralded as one of the greatest mages in all of Earthland before he disappeared. She'd met him personally and while she couldn't have said to approve of his demeanour she wouldn't deny that he was strong.

One of those exploits was the tale in which Heero supposedly slew Acnologia, finally ridding the world of an ancient menace. It was a good read for someone interested in heroics although Akeya found it a bit too straightforward and over the top: she preferred her stories with some more complexity in it so you could get properly immersed in the setting. The story wasn't from too long ago, at its longest about a decade. The austere assassin could remember when the book was released (it sold pretty well, since Heero had no hesitation in appealing to the masses).

While the story wasn't as detailed as Akeya would have liked it described the fight with Acnologia quite well, and the dragon's defeat was well recorded.

And yet Acnologia had showed up again at a later date.

The first conclusion people would arrive at was that the creature's demise had been proclaimed prematurely, that Heero had managed to injure it but hadn't delivered the finishing blow like he thought he had. If that was the only issue Akeya could write it down as a case of misjudgement, but that was only one in a pattern...

Another book, also thoroughly studied and then closed again. Rather than a biography this one was filled from front to back with memorable and significant events in the history of Fiore and its surroundings, most of them wrought by mages solitary and in groups. It was written in a style which appealed more to the research-minded scaled beauty, with a heavier focus on actual information rather than entertainment. While she wouldn't deny that sometimes a good story was worth the time she would nine times out of ten choose to absorb information and knowledge instead.

And in this book it was recorded several times that the king of dragons had met its violent end at the hands of other powerful creatures, human mages and others. The book dismissed it as nobody ever managing to kill the calamity, but combined with the other sources that Akeya had been digging up...

There were too many records of that black dragon having been slain in some form or another. And every time he came back as if nothing had happened, even if there was usually several years in between. And nearly every record stated with confidence that the dragon had died, usually in a manner which was extremely difficult to survive. Once you began to truly look at what was written down it became obvious that something was amiss. The question turned into why this was happening, and as aforementioned Akeya's personal perspective was leaving her troubled.

One explanation was that people were just too eager in proclaiming the dragon king dead. She doubted that one, because she was pretty sure most people would be more likely to believe that he couldn't be killed. There were plenty of stories calling him a calamity more than a creature after all. Beyond that there was the issue that some of the documentations were too precise and originated from sources normally thought credible. To dismiss all of them would be an oddity in itself.

If the dragoness had to hazard a guess herself she'd have to come to the very worrisome conclusion that the rumours of Acnologia being immortal were actually true. There were plenty of creatures in existence which were terribly hard to get rid off: there were countless methods for delaying the inevitable and escaping from oblivion's hungry maws. But most of those were based around avoiding situations which would kill you, or making yourself unkillable through mundane means. Neither of those applied to Acnologia who sometimes appeared to attack with a suicidal frenzy, and who (once you gathered all the reports) had apparently experienced quite the variety of defeats and endings. Some of them even included attempts at sealing the monster.

The persistence with which the creature returned to haunt Earthland and leave disaster in his wake left Akeya with no real explanation other than that some force was ensuring that the dragon king would exist to spread misery. And while this anti-social predator didn't have much reason to concern about the troubles of other people she couldn't just dismiss the fact that something like Acnologia would continue to return no matter what anybody did about it.

Reaching up she scratched the little dragon on her head behind the horns, an act which got her the reward of listening to a pleased churring. She was trying her best not to spoil the triplets but she had to admit that with how cautious she was to ensure nothing could harm them she was making it difficult for them to learn about the harsher parts of life. She hadn't even let them hunt for themselves yet, aside from some rats which had been sneaking about.

But the oddities with Acnologia didn't end there. Something else she had noticed was that, for some reason or another, he was never defeated by the same person twice. The moment someone was recorded as having taken down the black shadow of death their paths never crossed again. That might be another reason why this phenomenon hadn't been brought to anyone's attention before now: those who dealt with the arrogant bastard never encountered him again, and so never noticed what was going on.

There was the theory that it was always a different dragon, but the description was nearly identical each time. And Acnologia never gave the impression of caring for anything other than turning something into rubble and ashes. It'd have to be a massive coincidence for all those black dragons to be different ones, nearly identical and behaving exactly the same.

A dragon powerful enough to be treated as a natural disaster even by the people of Fiore, who over the years had plenty of opportunity to become familiar with the insanity that was the power of both monsters and mages. Hargeon was nearly completely flattened at one point by a group of monsters from the sea, and while they'd been as destructive as any tidal wave they'd still been classified as monsters rather than some force of nature.

A dragon who would keep coming back no matter what you did to him, always reappearing to sow havoc and misery without regards for anything than slaking its thirst for destruction. Killing him didn't work, disintegrating didn't work, sealing him didn't work... any method you could think of wouldn't work, giving the strong idea that the force at work wasn't countering any specific effect, but rather enforcing a specific trait of reality: the trait that Acnologia exists and is out there wreaking destruction.

    And yet...

And yet with all that power, and all that immortality which appears to go beyond any mundane immunity to dying... Nobody who defeated the dragon king had to fight him again. A thought which might be just as nightmarish as the other two.

The dragoness came to a halt, the little hatchling on her head craning its neck in an attempt to look at her facial expression. Reaching up with one hand Akeya scratched the little one behind the horns, and as her adopted child settling down with a happy churring sound the dragoness's clawed feet carried her through the library. The other two hatchlings trailed her high up in the air, keeping track of her location but keeping most of their focus on playing with one another. It was good to see that the three of them were growing up healthily despite Akeya having been rather hesitant to expose them to any kind of danger. The three of them had awakened a motherly instinct inside of her which she'd never been aware she possessed until the first time Zack had given her their three eggs with orders to protect them.

There was no sound other than the soft churring of one hatchling, the beating of wings from the other two hatchlings, and the clacking of hard claws upon smooth tiles. The library did have carpets in the reading areas, given that those places were dedicated to comfort and ease of reading, but when you moved amongst the great towering stacks of books and scrolls you'd have to deal with a smooth, solid floor. Much easier to keep tidy... and much harder for uninvited visitors to remain silent on.

She'd already gathered texts from all over the library for the research on Acnologia, but thinking about the conundrum had managed to spark another thought in her head. An inspiration of sorts, although as ominous as what she'd already been thinking of. If her suspicion was true it would explain a great deal about Acnologia, but she highly doubted anyone would be happy about the revelation. More likely they'd do their best to find alternate explanations, because the truth was an unpleasant one.

History was filled with the results of people not wanting to face or deal with the truth. Or those who faced the truth but couldn't handle it.

Finding her way to the right stack the austere beauty made her way forward, then made a quick motion with a hand covered in smooth, midnight blue scales, and tipped with neatly kept but deadly talons. A book bound in ancient leather was pulled out from the row it had been resting, falling into Akeya's hand as if placed there by an invisible power. The powers of darkness really had a lot more useful applications to them than the rather boring and mean-spirited stuff most people always focused on. The dragoness idly wondered if the humans and their distant cousins ever realized that most of the more... interesting ideas... originated more often from their own kind than from dragons or even demons. Demons had a tendency to stick with old-fashionsed but practical stuff unless they found themselves inspired by mortal ingenuinity. Akeya wouldn't use that as argument for humanoids somehow being worse than other intelligent creatures, but they certainly could affort to be a little bit less haughty about their supposed moral high ground.

However that was a thought she'd entertained many times already. It was unproductive and not worth considering right now. Right now she had to focus on something more practical. Although one could argue that it had to do with morality and sin, given that some would argue that the book in her hand talked about the source of both of those things.

The old and rather thick book was not quite so old as to have any real dust gathered on it, but nevertheless was the kind of data piece which was referenced by other books to increase credibility. It was built to last, not to be easily carried or casually read while sipping from a mild drink on a beach. It was the kind of book you poured over late at night because you'd already been at it for hours.

The title of the book was 'On The Nature Of Deities'.

[Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya) Empty Re: [Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya)

Post by Akeya 16th January 2020, 5:20 pm

Where did gods come from? What were they made of? What was their nature, their origin, their history, their role in reality? This was one of those questions which had plagued mortals for as long as they'd believed gods existed. There were those who questioned whether the gods existed at all but they often made their existence quite clear. If you bothered to travel the world you'd encounter lots of places where a deity clearly had some kind of influence. And that wasn't even talking about those who claimed to gain their power from a deity. Akeya herself had been forced to put down a solar to save the three hatchlings now sharing the library with her, and a solar was generally understood to be one of the strongest servants of the gods.

So the gods clearly existed. Or at least, some gods did. There were of courses cases that someone believed in a deity which turned out to be false or a mask worn by some other entity, which could be a god but not the god they thought they believed in. But that didn't answer all the big questions, it just proved that the big questions were worth asking.

The book that Akeya was holding, 'On The Nature Of Deities', was an old one written by a priest who'd gone out of his way to travel the world and study various deligions, from ones which revered a single deity as being all-powerful and all-knowing (Akeya snorted lightly at the thought) and others which believed there were as many deities as there were stars, some of them actually embodying stars. And there were also those which believed that everything that existed had a deity or spirit of sorts... the topic of what a deity really was could become a real headache.

Still, this priest had done his research and done his best to write something informative. The book explained all the various types of religions and how they fitted into the grand scheme of things, but its main focus was on the gods themselves. The austere assassin appreciated it when the cover of a book was honest about its contents.

Bringing the book back to where she'd been studying she placed it on a table which she hadn't covered with scrolls and books yet and opened it carefully. The handwriting was precise, although of course this wasn't the original edition: Onyx Moon was influential but they couldn't have hoped to get their hands on the original, which was safely tucked away in some cathedral. Which was all right, since the dragoness trusted this copy to be accurate.

The first theory was that gods had always existed. They were timeless and eternal, which also meant that they couldn't be killed. Killing a god, in fact, proved that it wasn't a true god, but merely a cheap imitation. Akeya didn't think this one was accurate, especially since there was evidence of gods being born in the past. It was unlikely that they'd hidden themselves away and only popped up at the right moment. Maybe some gods had existed eternally but it wasn't a universal trait.

The second theory was that gods were born and died just like mortals, but on a timespan which no mortal could hope to comprehend. They might not die from natural causes but they could still be killed. This one sounded more realistic, but it didn't answer all the questions. Such as why deities would be such unique creatures if the basics of their existence were so similar as that of the mortals.

The third theory... Akeya frowned as she flipped through the chapters. The priest had been a bit longwinded, wanting to explain everything in great detail to account for all the possibilities but also to be as clear as possible. It was informative but it could be a hassle if you wanted to find a specific piece of text. Eventually she found it and placed her sharp talon on it, carefully so as to not damage the yellowed page.

'It may very well be possible that the words god, goddess, deity and similar don't refer to a single type of lifeform. Rather they are words to describe several lifeforms which share certain traits, such as being an origin of divine power (and even then can we be certain that all forms of divine power are the same?). That said there is the question why certain gods would have such strong interest in the mortals. After all a truly timeless and eternal entity might find the activities of our mortals entertaining but it is difficult to imagine they would take greater interest in us than that. Would such a being even understand the concept of being bored? Their minds would be too alien for us to understand.

But let us presume for the moment that there are several types of deity. Then let us focus on the ones which show a greater interest in the mortal plane for a moment. Why would they possess this drive to interfere with a realm which should be below their notice? Why do they guide us, tell us how to live our lives? One of the most obvious answers is that beyond mere interest they receive something in return of all of this. Something they either sincerely want or dearly need. But even these 'influencing gods', as we might coin them, often have different objectives in the mortal realm. What is the unifying factor?

Keep in mind that not all gods that we mortals worship take a strong interest in our world. Some seem content with existing, and while they might reward us for dedicating ourselves to them they show little interest in actually guiding our actions and thoughts. Often these are deities whose sphere of influence is the natural world, which existed long before us intelligent mortals entered the theatre. But for those who do dictate how we should live our lives, I have found one nearly universal trait in them: they demand that we worship them. They wish for us to devote ourselves to them, they demand sacrifices, they tell us to perform rituals when we ask for their aid. What they might desire, or need, from us is faith.

Why might such a god require faith? After all they are beings far above the mortal plane, embodiments of concepts and ideas. A god of fire is often not just the ruler of fire, but the fire itself as well. But even concepts and ideas require sustenance. An unknown concept disappears, an idea nobody believes in disappears. Maybe to these influencing gods, these beings who take an active interest in the lives of us mortals, our belief and faith is their sustenance. It would explain why so many religions contain tenets which tell the religious not only to worship their deity but also to spread that deity's sphere of influence. More sustenance would mean the god can grow stronger.

Many who read this might consider this blasphemy, believe that I am saying that the gods are not worthy of our devotion if they require our belief to survive. But I believe differently, in fact I would say this makes the gods even more worthy of our attention. If they are fed by our faith then they might also be shaped by our faith, and while such a being would still be beyond our full comprehension it would also mean that their embody thoughts we consider important. Supporting such a god is akin to supporting the ideals we believe in. Spreading the word of a god of peace is the spreading of the ideal of peace, which surely is a grand mission.

But with all of this said we are still left with the question of why our belief would shape, nourish, and possibly even give rise to godlike beings. If we take a look at the origin of magic-'

Akeya stopped reading there as her gaze drifted into the distance. Belief might serve as fuel for certain entities. It could strengthen them, sustain them, and possibly might be the reason why those entities exist in the first place. There was no concrete evidence so far as she knew: gods with many followers were almost always powerful and could perform great miracles but there were also god with few followers who were still just as dangerous. But there was a certain kind of logic behind it...

It might be that the black dragon of destruction, Acnologia, was proof that such a thing existed.

He definitely existed and he definitely had an influence on the world, but no matter what method you used to defeat him he would always return. Yet at the same time if you defeated him once you never had to face him again. At least, if it was known that you defeated him.

If belief shaped Acnologia it would explain why he would always return: because people believed him to be a force of nature which was impossible to get rid of. And the reason why those who decisively defeated him never faced him more than once was because that same 'faith' included the knowledge of that defeat. Acnologia's behaviour and existence would both be nourished and bound by belief.

This was terrifying in a sense. It was literally impossible to permanently rid the world of Acnologia as long as people believed in the dragon's existence and inevitable nature. But at the same time it gave you weapons for how to at least deal with him.

If defeating him meant that he could never face you again Akeya would kill the dragon of destruction, and make sure that at least wherever she went the calamity would never again appear.

[Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya) Empty Re: [Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya)

Post by Akeya 15th February 2020, 7:24 am

    Several days later.

Regardless of whether Akeya's hypothesis was true or not it was worth putting to the test. If she was correct then be killing Acnologia she at least would no longer have to worry about his reappearance, as his legend would include him being defeated by her. She would have to make sure that the story carried far enough for people to adopt and acknowledge it but that wasn't too difficult. The records she'd uncovered suggested that it was possible to retrieve trophies from the dragon king's corpse once he was defeated, even if she couldn't find anyone who'd bothered to turn those trophies into magical items. You'd think that the bodily remains of one of the most infamous dragons in the world (if not the most infamous) would serve as a good foundation upon which to craft equipment powerful enough to go down into legend, but apparently that wasn't the case. Or people just kept losing them. Or maybe the remains didn't last as Acnologia returned for another round. Who knew how the dragon king's immortality worked?

Akeya had left the three hatchlings in the capable hands of Korikami. The shadow fox had been her companion for so long now that she didn't even really need to order him around any more. The two of them had entered a symbiotic relationship where the dragoness provided him with food and shelter and he performed any tasks that needed doing. He was intelligent enough that one could maybe call it slavery. Not that Korikami would appreciate the attempts at freeing him: the shadow fox was quite happy with his lot in life, having a twilight dragon as his master. And Akeya appreciated having such a competent companion even if he wasn't much of a fighter. The fact that he had a shadow shrine hidden inside of him was definitely the most useful, since he could hide pretty much anything inside there while being extremely hard to catch himself.

The dragoness sometimes wished she could spend more time looking after the three little ones, but she wasn't one for sitting in her lair all day. They had a reliable protector and the assassin could keep doing her own thing, training and performing tasks which needed doing. The good guys were good at wiping out direct threats but Akeya felt a lot more comfortable dealing with the more tricky stuff herself. Such as a dragon who apparently could not be stopped.

She was flying high up in the air, having long since left Fiore as she was travelling towards where Acnologia was last sighted. He'd shown up recently and done his usual thing of returning everything to rubble and building up a significant body count before leaving. With some luck that would give her enough of a lead to track him down to wherever he went when he wasn't in the middle of causing mass destruction. Did he have a lair? Did he just travel the world and attack whenever he came within sighting distance of a settlement? Nobody was really sure, although she hadn't found any credible records of anyone ever fighting the monster within his lair.

[Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya) Empty Re: [Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya)

Post by Akeya 25th February 2020, 4:13 pm

Given the lack of info on a lair it was safe to assume the dragon king either didn't have any or it wasn't a normal lair. Maybe he returned to a type of metaphysical lair after being defeated? It might not really matter because an outsider might not even be able to reach such a lair. Interesting as it was to muse about the nature of the legendary dragon Akeya was more focused on the practical issue of taking him down for the moment. She'd do her best to observe his death carefully and see if it contained any clues towards the dragon's true nature, but for now taking Acnologia down was top priority, far above satisfying her own curiosity.

In the distance she saw smoke rise up from the land. From memory she could tell that the smoke was in the correct location to correspond with a sizeable town. Except it was too much smoke for it to merely be chimneys. For there to be so much... it looked like she'd found the first victims of Acnologia's latest rampage. Or at least the first victims she encountered. Either way, that town might hold some clues, or at the very least someone might have seen in which direction Acnologia had flown off.

Approaching at a rapid pace Akeya saw that the grasslands she'd been flying over were being replaced by a barren wasteland. Made out of cracked and scorched earth. Another big clue to Acnologia's presence, as there weren't many things which could cause enough damage to completely alter the landscape. She supposed she should be glad he didn't destroy a mountain or two while he was at it, although the records also showed that for a dragon of destruction he had a remarkable lack of interest in destroying random parts of scenery. It might be that the records focused on the impacts that civilization felt but even then it seemed like the black dragon tended to zone in on inhabited settlements once he was close enough to detect them. Maybe he just found destroying miscellaneous rocks boring and unrewarding, whereas killing humans and burning their homes to the ground at least caused a splash.

Once she was close enough to see the town itself she confirmed what she'd already suspected: many buildings were still standing but there were none which were undamaged, and most of them looked like they could collapse at any moment. A large portion of the town was simply destroyed, with large piles of debris and rubble to show for it. From this distance Akeya could also see that there were small figures moving away from the destroyed settlement, survivors who didn't want to stay in a place which had already been struck by disaster once. Not difficult to sympathize with, although right now what Akeya needed was information.

Aiming downwards Akeya entered a gentle descent, letting herself practically float down on the span of her wings as she thought about how to handle this. Given that their home had just been destroyed by a dragon they probably wouldn't be too happy to see another dragon. She might have to disguise herself... but time was also of the essence. Probably best to use her human form, inquire to where the big bad dragon had gone, and then go after it as quickly as possible. In theory she could help them find a place to stay for the night, but she'd rather hunt Acnologia while the trail was still warm. That and she wasn't very good with people in the first place and didn't care that much about them either. Defeating Acnologia would help more people in the long run and it suited her a lot better.

Reaching the ground Akeya shifted her appearance, her scales disappearing to expose more olive skin and her draconic features melting away. It always felt strange to turn fully human, as if she was missing something. She looked at her human fingers, flexing and clenching them while pressing her toes against the soles of the boots which came with her human form. Normally she'd have her clawed toes digging into the earth. Normally her hands were much bigger, protected by tough dragon scales and topped off by sharp talons which were significantly more dangerous than daggers. These fingers were... almost dainty, honestly. Akeya prided herself on moving with elegance and precision but she wouldn't call herself particularly feminine, at least not in the way which required slender fingers.

However now was not the time to satisfy her own... disturbance about the nature of the human body. She had people to interro-question, and a dragon to hunt down. A dragon other than herself. Stepping forward the assassin headed towards where she remembered the closest refugees to be, her boots hitting the cracked ground with a sound which actually was louder than what she made with her claws. Most likely due to a lack of experience walking around in her human form, although it was probably also true that the boots were simply not as flexible as her claws and couldn't absorb the impact as well.

It didn't take long for her to find the first batch of refugees. Brushing some raven hair out of her face she approached them at a steady pace, relying on her human appearance to keep them at ease. Of course she might still be mistaken for a bandit, although the fact that she was bluntly walking towards them out in the open should help ease that fear. Even when it came to robbing refugees brigands preferred a bit of subtlety and stealth to be involved. Ambushes were ridiculously effective, it would be stupid not to use them when you could.

The refugees saw her before she was within speaking distance: Akeya could tell with her sharp senses. Fortunately they didn't run away or anything, although they did come to a halt and wait for her to come to them. They looked wary, uncertain, as if wondering what someone like her was doing out here and whether they should be afraid of her or not. Akeya raised a hand in greeting, then called out once she was close enough that she didn't have to outright yell. "Greetings. I've got a couple of questions for you people."

Leila would have told her to be more tactful. The nature goddess was always the more gentle one of the two of them.

When the refugees still failed to run away Akeya just walked until she was standing a mere handful of meters away from them, placing a hand on her hip as she regarded them. No serious wounds, although a couple of them looked roughed up and in bad shape. Either they had access to healing magic or these people had more trouble with getting out of the rubble than enduring Acnologia's attack. "Given the smoke in the distance and the look of you I suspect you're refugees." Akeya stated this bluntly, some of the people standing in front of her looking shocked or downhearted while others nodded.

"Yes. Our town was destroyed by a great beast, and we're looking for a safe haven. Do you know of any, miss...?" One man, who looked like he was made of sterner stuff, spoke up with a voice which probably would have sounded gruff and no-nonsense if it wasn't tinged with weariness and wariness.

"Akeya. My name is Akeya. And I believe I'm correct in guessing that the great beast was Acnologia, the black dragon." She didn't need them to confirm it verbally: she could tell from the way they flinched.

"...Yes. It was Acnologia. We don't know why, but the Dragon King swooped down upon our homes and brought ruin." A woman, standing next to the man. His wife? She also looked like she wouldn't go down easily. "We've got no clue why, but maybe that's the wrong question to ask?"

"Acnologia delights in destruction. Trying to find reason in his actions is a futile effort." Akeya frowned. She was lucky that they had some sensible folk willing to answer her questions. "I'm tracking him down. Which direction did he go?"

There was a soft gasp, Akeya's emerald eyes shifting towards someone in the back of the party before returning to the two at the front who were willing to speak. They also looked shocked, and confused as well. After sharing a glance the woman spoke up again. "He went... He went north, I think. There's nothing there but more plains, so I wouldn't know why." She hesitated before speaking up again. "I... wouldn't follow him if I were you. That kind of thing... It's better to leave it alone and hope it returns the favour."

Akeya's eyes narrowed before she shook her head. "Maybe for the average person." Well, she had the information she needed. North it was. Changing back into her usual appearance the refugees all drew back, with more than one gasp and several cries. "I'm here to kill him."

Spreading her wings the dragoness took back to the air, flying right over the startled and frightened refugees to head straight north. They knew her name and they knew what she was. They could help her build up the legend of her defeating the Dragon King, and if her hypothesis was correct that would help ensure that the black beast would trouble her no more.

Akeya would have preferred it if she had directions a bit more complete than merely the cardinal direction the supposed Dragon King had headed towards, but she couldn't exactly complain given the circumstances. Those refugees were in no state to go back and track the monster's movements: aside from the lack of skill and preparedness for such a task they didn't have the mindset for it, now or any other time. No sane person would normally want to get involved with that apocalyptic beast, and getting involved right after said beast had destroyed your home was only for the truly insane or suicidal. Or Akeya. She didn't consider either suicidal or insane, yet here she was chasing a monster which was as much a feature of this world as gravity or oceans.

Well, fortunately it didn't exactly take much skill to follow the black dragon's trail. He wasn't very stealthy, either because he'd never bothered to learn or because he didn't think it mattered if anyone tried to follow him. Or maybe it just was impossible for a creature such as that to not leave markings of its passing. While the fact that the dragon could fly meant it didn't leave clawprints in the ground it still left plenty of other marks. Primarily destructive marks. It seemed the apocalyptic Dragon King couldn't help but lash out at its surroundings even when travelling. It wasn't a continuous trail, but Akeya had little issue spotting places where the dragon's wrath (or boredom) had placed craters in the terrain. In such wild and open plains they stood out like angry sores, still smoking and sometimes filled with the results of raw, volatile magic messing up the natural materials of the land.

The refugees had been correct that up north there wasn't much but plains, tall grass growing where the recent disaster hadn't scorched the land and left it barren. However Akeya could also tell that further into the distance there were mountains, and that was where she expected to find her quarry. Dragons always liked easily defendable positions, even someone such as Acnologia who was an anomaly in his own right. Mountains were the natural habitat of the scaled rulers of the material realm, either to sleep upon or to find a cave in. The dragoness flexed her clawed hands subconsciously as the mountains got closer and closer. It was nearly time, and even for a creature as calm as her the task that was before her filled her with a sense of wariness.

If Acnologia was easily taken down he would never have become the iconic figure of destruction that he was. She had faith in her abilities but this wasn't promising to be an easy fight by any stretch of the word easy.

Once she could feel even the faintest trace of the creature itself Akeya rendered herself hidden, a non-entity that silently soared through the air. The mountains were now quickly becoming bigger as she approached, perspective making it seem like they were growing out of the ground, stabbing at the dark skies. In reality the dragoness was now closer enough that she could have reached them with her magic, but she wasn't here for grand displays of might. She was here to kill, and as an assassin, a predator she didn't kill with might but with skill and precision.

Now that she was close enough she could feel the way that the Dragon King's aura bore down on its surroundings even when it wasn't doing anything. The aura, that magic-filled, dread-inducing aura, was one which would leave you feeling like a tsunami was about to bear down on you, smashing your bones and dragging you under. It was like ash cloud of an erupting volcano, rolling towards you to asphyxiate you even as scorching hot smoke burned away your skin. It was like the first tremors of an earthquake, promising to tear apart the ground underneath you and send you plummeting to a painful, shattered demise. It was like the sight of meteors falling across the sky, leaving streaks of flame behind them as they came to turn everything to rubble.

It was an aura which promised disaster, which left you with nothing but helplessness and a futile desire to resist. Akeya wasn't going to let it take control of her, but she could easily see how even hardened adventurers and soldiers could easily lose all drive and confidence. For many veterans what kept them going when the going got rough was the knowledge that it could always get worse, that not everything was lost yet or that giving up was still worse than fighting back. In the face of Acnologia... all of those thoughts would most likely feel feeble and insignificant.

The beast himself, the supposed King of Dragons, the Black Winged Terror of the Apocalypse, Acnologia, had carved out a big part of one of the mountains to create something akin to a nest or a bed to lay down on. Curled up and covering most of his body with his wings, his eyes closed, one might almost think him fully asleep and helpless.

Akeya didn't think so. She was hidden right now, but she was sure that the moment she began to attack the beast would react... and then all hell would break loose.

    So, how to approach this...

Akeya had confidence in her stealth, but she didn't think that prey such as Acnologia was easily taken down. To be big enough a threat that you were considered a natural disaster you couldn't get away with just overwhelming offensive power: if that was the only thing you had going on then you would be taken out the moment someone or something caught you off guard. To be a disaster you had to not only be immensely destructive but also nigh impossible to get rid of. As such even if Akeya performed a perfect attack she was quite sure that the fight wouldn't be decided with one blow.

That and she wanted people to remember this fight so she could use it as a ward against Acnologia in the future, so if she somehow did manage to defeat the beast in one strike it would most likely have undesired results. Or maybe being able to take the King of Dragons down in one blow would make for an even better legend? It was hard to say how that kind of thing would turn out. For mortals whether their deeds would become legend usually only became clear after the one performing the deeds had already died from old age or some other cause. For a creature such as Akeya she could live long enough to find out, but she didn't want to leave it to chance. Defeating Acnologia in one blow might become the stuff of legends, but her odds were better if she had a proper fight with the monster, one which would leave its mark on the land.

That said she might as well go all out from the beginning. She didn't want to be the one caught off guard after all: that would be both embarrassing and, much more importantly, fatal. Flying high up in the air Akeya gathered her mana silently and stealthily. Being a dragon and having spent a lot of time training and improving herself by overcoming rigorous challenges her mana pool was immense. Most likely she could flatten civilians and weak mages with her aura alone if she wished to. However that wasn't relevant right now. As she gathered her mana she concentrated it into her clawed hands, infusing one with the deepest dark and the other with the brightest light.

Bringing her claws together she focused, feeling the two opposing elements contrast and oppose one another. Light and dark, the greatest examples of polar opposites in existence. By combining them the right way Akeya could create an edge which was conceptual in its sharpness, as sharp as the divide between light and dark. The division between two absolute opposites.

Once she'd amassed enough mana that she could level a city with it Akeya released it in the form of a nigh-invisible linear shockwave, a two-dimensional ripple that sliced the air in half. The air, and everything else.

Akeya's Horizon spell was most likely her most potent, even if its nature limited the amount of havoc one could wreak with it. Whichever two-dimensional plane she chose which originated from herself was divided into two in a manner almost absolute. The amount of things which could prevent this bisection was so small that Akeya had yet to encounter one, even though she was always wary of the possibility. Of course the air repaired itself after the Horizon had passed it, but where the slash went everything was divided into two pieces with the cleanest cut that was physically possible to achieve.

That included the land itself, the ground suddenly developing a line thin enough that it could be argued to be the example of a line without dimensions. As well as the mountains, the cut so fine that it might take years before someone noticed that several mountains had been sliced open, as with such precision the attack provoked no avalanches or collapses.

Acnologia, however, unfolded at incredible speed and dove to the side, spreading his wings and taking to the skies in time for the Horizon to cut only the tip of the beast's tail. Roaring in anger Acnologia looked around for the assailant, ready to unleash his devastating wrath for the one who had dared to attack him during his rest and worse, actually cut off a piece of his tail.

Akeya narrowed her eyes as she undid her invisibility and turned into her true form, that of a dragon of similar size to Acnologia. Her scales were iridescent, oily black where the light failed to reach but showing a myriad of glimmering colours everywhere else. Her emerald eyes locked onto Acnologia as he opened her mouth and roared back.

It was time for Heretic Dragon and the Dragon King to collide.

[Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya) Empty Re: [Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya)

Post by Akeya 23rd July 2020, 1:27 pm

It looked like the dragon king was still wary of things that could pose a threat to him, such as Akeya's Horizon. The monster's blue markings began to glow, and a red haze enveloped his body as he roared and charged at the offending dragoness at surprising speed. Akeya swerved to the side, although she was surprised by Acnologia's speed and nearly got clipped by his charge. As he passed by she opened her maw wide and released a breath of twilight, a mass of twisting colours that bathed Acnologia's wing. Where the twilight breath passed reality distorted and unraveled as the natural order was disrupted: while the effect wouldn't spread beyond what was originally affected the destruction was quite severe.

Of course the living catastrophe was made of sturdier stuff than the environment, and while its wing certainly looked weakened, with distorted colours and several small holes in the membrane, overall the damage was minimal even as Acnologia let loose another roar of indignation. Akeya for her part slammed her wings powerfully to propel herself away from her adversary, creating some space as she tried to figure out what to do next.

As she'd released her breath attack she'd noted that the crimson haze that surrounded Acnologia had weakened it even before it had touched his durable body. It looked like whatever that haze was, it severely weakened incoming attacks. Acnologia's tail was still bleeding from where the tip was cut off, and apparently the dragon king didn't want to lose any other body parts. Akeya wasn't actually sure if this protective layer would be able to do anything about her Horizon, but with a creature like Acnologia she couldn't dismiss the possibility: while her Horizon was a conceptual division it was still created through usage of magic, and if the red haze weakened magic sufficiently it could reduce the effects of the attack, even if normal defences were useless against it.

Acnologia recovered quickly from his charge and turned around, flying straight towards Akeya with malicious intent. Once again his speed was surprising, the twilight dragoness this time flying up to evade only to feel the monster's maw barely miss her tail. If he managed to get a hold of her things would get dicey very quickly: she'd have to stay on the defensive for now even as she bathed the dragon king in another twilight breath, watching his pitch-black scales and glowing blue markings distort and discolour.

She could tell that whatever that red haze was it took quite a bit of mana to sustain: the dragon king's reserves were unfathomable but she still doubted he'd keep that kind of defence up forever. maybe she could outlast it.

Not wanting to remain a sitting duck for the catastrophe who was charging her like a bull Akeya dove towards the ground, her scales turning pure white as she released a blinding flash to keep Acnologia off of her back for just a couple of seconds. With her own high speed she could quickly reach the earth, planting her claws in the dirt and roaring up at Acnologia as her scales returned to their usual appearance. The dragon king roared back, then charged her once more.

Akeya prepared herself for impact, her eyes narrow as the other dragon closed the distance very, very quickly. At the very last moment she disappeared in a burst of dark, clouding Acnologia's vision while she reappeared a good distance away. The result was the dragon king smashing into the ground with enough force that the world shook: it was a good thing that every settlement in the area had been destroyed already because otherwise the sudden earthquake would have made matters even worse.

However that wasn't going to keep Acnologia down: Akeya doubted he was even really hurt. Instead she immediately charged in and tackled the king as he was still shaking his head from the impact, snarling as she tried to pin him to the ground, claws slamming his wings into the dirt while she took his neck between her powerful jaws. Pressing down on it she found that her fangs found no purchase and that his scales were too hard, but rapidly shaking her head at least kept Acnologia from regaining enough focus to throw her off.

[Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya) Empty Re: [Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya)

Post by Akeya 3rd August 2020, 12:38 pm

At first it looked like Akeya's tactic of pinning Acnologia down was working: she kept shaking his head to keep him from focusing, and her clawed hands had a strong grip on his wings. Her hind claws were firmly dug into the ground for additional stability, her wings spread to help her keep her balance as the monstrous dragon king twisted underneath her and tried to shake her off.

However in this position she couldn't deliver any attacks that could seriously injure Acnologia. Her maw and claws were occupied with keeping him from escaping, and while she could unleash several magical attacks none of them would be able to penetrate the dragon king's protective scales. Even a dragon like Akeya had to acknowledge that the apocalyptic beast was too tough to easily injure: a fleeting thought in her head was to wonder how many overconfident dragon slayers had attacked Acnologia, sure that their 'anti-dragon' magic would put an end to his reign, only for them to realize that even amongst dragons Acnologia was a beast. She'd read many records as she studied her prey, but she was sure there were still many more adventurers whose stories never were told.

The red haze that surrounded Acnologia began to fade away, and his blue markings stopped emitting their ominous glow. Feeling some of the hardiness flow out of his scales Akeya bit down, hoping to pierce them and injure his neck. However she then felt Acnologia's muscles tighten underneath his scales, and the next thing she knew he managed to throw her off. The twilight dragoness quickly recovered, grabbing the ground with all four her claws and using tail and wings to regain her balance. Unfortunately that was all the time the dragon king needed to leap back into the skies, spreading his wings and creating some distance. He spun around to face Akeya once more, the twilight dragoness glaring up at him... only for her emerald eyes to widen as she saw him inhale and a blue light appeared inside the monster's maw.

There were reports of Acnologia's breath attack. It was the kind of thing which could have formed a legend all of its own even without the dragon king behind it: a power which could lay waste to the land and leave no survivors. It was like a superweapon invented by a nation to protect itself, like Etherion, but produced by a single entity. According to Akeya's research Acnologia didn't actually use it that often: it was something the beast reserved for when it was facing a target more dangerous than a town or even a city.

Such as, apparently, a dragon powerful enough to engage it in combat.

Taking that attack head-on would be the epitome of suicidal: whatever kind of magic it was, it couldn't be eaten by other slayers. If she tried to block it she'd just be pulverized.

Akeya didn't waste any time ascending into the skies herself, trying to gain as much altitude as possible before Acnologia finished charging up. Her scales began to shine as she accelerated, using the element of light to enhance her own speed. If she got hit by that while standing on the ground she wouldn't be the only victim: there was no knowing how far that breath attack would go. Not that Akeya generally cared much about others, but she didn't want to be responsible for anything behind her being wiped out by Acnologia's breath attack either.

Finally the king of dragons finished his inhalation, the blue light inside his maw a promise of certain death. With a roar he released it, a wave of destruction shooting out from his gullet and obliterating the air before him. Akeya turned her entire body into light and shot to the side. Her timing was just right, the wave of death passed her by narrowly. Her having ascended into the skies meant that the land below was safe, although glancing back she saw that there was a huge gap in the skies where there was simply nothing. No clouds, no birds, no insects: along the path of Acnologia's Apocalypse Roar only empty space remained.

Flapping her wings to not be pulled into the pull of the vacuum Acnologia had created Akeya charged the king of dragons once more. This time she enveloped her entire body in darkness beforehand, a dark that quickly spread to fill the air and leave her actual form obscured. Acnologia hissed as his vision was obscured, then growled loudly when his entire body was enveloped. Before he could try to fly out of the cloud of dark Akeya once again tackled him and clamped her jaws around his throat, but this time with a lot more force, and a lot more deadly intent.

Dark bindings wrapped around Acnologia's limbs, holding them in place as Akeya used her own claws to rip holes into the dragon king's wings. She repeatedly struck him with her tail, using it was a whip. Her fangs dug into his neck, this time around the scales giving way to the force of a dragon's bite. Acnologia roared as he struggled against his bindings.

[Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya) Empty Re: [Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya)

Post by Akeya 18th August 2020, 3:43 pm

Akeya could feel her fangs puncturing Acnologia's scales. This time around the twilight dragoness was managing to leave a mark on the king of dragons, a feat in and of itself. So far the only thing that had really hurt him was her Horizon: everything else had at most inconvenienced him. But this time around she could taste blood in her mouth. Acnologia's blood. Biting his neck probably wasn't going to be enough to kill him, but it might at least hinder him and make it easier for her to land the killing blow after. If she managed to inflict enough damage he might begin to suffer from blood loss.

As for Acnologia's wings, despite Akeya's best attempts she was having trouble tearing apart the membrane. While the scales protecting them weren't as thick as the ones on his body they still managed to make it difficult for her claws to tear through, especially since her position wasn't optimal: Acnologia kept struggling and trying to throw her off. Given that she'd bound him she was in control of the grapple but he was still making the situation difficult.

And then the dragon king's markings began to glow blue again and the red haze reformed. Clearly Acnologia was planning to put a stop to her assault.

Knowing that as long as that power was active she wasn't going to be able to do much Akeya let go of the beast and quickly retreated, flying backwards at high speed. However she wasn't going to leave Acnologia unmolested.

Spreading her wings wide she gathered all the darkness she'd used to blind Acnologia, then condensed it into several small orbs, dark as the night and dense as a mountain. Launching her Dark Dragon's Scales Akeya aimed for Acnologia's wings once more, this time with her ranged magic.

The dragon king easily broke free from the bindings without Akeya clinging to him. However before he could get to charging her the pitch-black spheres ripped through his wings: the twilight dragon's claws had already weakened his membrane in several places, and this new attack finished the work. With several large holes in his wings Acnologia's airborne speed was greatly reduced.

Roaring in anger and pain the king of dragons descended towards the ground, blood trailing behind him as well as dripping onto the dirt. Taking a stand on the ground he raised his head and glared at Akeya, then opened his maw and roared a challenge. While the holes in his wings weren't large enough to keep him from flying he'd apparently decided that he wanted to take the dragoness on the ground, where the damaged wings wouldn't be an issue.

Observing the way that Acnologia's red haze painted the ground scarlet Akeya considered her options. From the way that Acnologia was standing... if she tried to attack him from afar he'd dodge and defend. Her Horizon might be able to hurt him, red haze or no, but only if it could hit him. From the looks of it he was aware that she might want to start a ranged battle and was prepared to show off his ground mobility.

She could just do it anyway and try to score a hit, but she imagined that she might run out of energy before her opponent did. Her energy reserves were immense, but her opponent was Acnologia. Anything she fired that was strong enough to injure him would drain a large amount of mana, and all Acnologia would have to do was move out of the way. Due to Akeya's precision assassination skills she didn't have a lot of large area attacks either.

It looked like a melee attack was her only option at this point. Twisting light and dark around herself she turned invisible, hiding her energy as well as she positioned herself above Acnologia. With his opponent having turned invisible the monster roared in anger once more, running around in an attempt to find her while also showing enough intelligence to not stay in the same place or move in a predictable pattern. Akeya had to wait half a minute to figure out when to strike before she entered a dive, shooting down like a meteor falling from the heavens as she descended onto Acnologia.

The dragon king tried to dodge her at the last minute, but Akeya managed to swerve and hit him anyway. The two of them rolled over the ground, flattening it and crushing anything which stuck out, as they clawed and growled at one another. Akeya tried to get on top of Acnologia once again, freely releasing her twilight breath over the dragon king's chest and face. The red haze blocked most of it but she could still see the colours of his scales distorting and their overall structure becoming more fragile.

At the end of the struggle Akeya was on top once more, but this time around Acnologia was facing her. Which meant he was in a position to strike back. Akeya tried to avoid his claws as he swiped at her, then had to quickly retract her neck when he tried to rip out her throat. In response she breathed more twilight magic onto his face, directly into his eyes.

Another earth-shattering roar filled the land as Acnologia was blinded, thrashing underneath the twilight dragoness while Akeya tried her best to gather as much of her power as she could.

Even his defensive magic wouldn't protect him against a point-blank Horizon.

[Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya) Empty Re: [Job] Dragon Rebellion (Akeya)

Post by Akeya 29th August 2020, 12:30 pm

Akeya suppressed a wince as she could feel some blood seep out of her wounds. While she had managed to avoid the worst of Acnologia's attacks his claws had managed to hit her a couple of times: while the destruction god was vulnerable to her dragon magic the reverse was also true, and unlike Acnologia she wasn't quite at the level yet where she could just ignore such blows. She wasn't really the kind to tank all attacks anyway: evasion and precision were her tricks. Which didn't work as well when you were grappling with your opponent and rolling over the ground.

Still more mana gathered as Akeya wanted to make sure that her attack would rip right through Acnologia, preferably splitting him in two. Horizon was a dreadful ability, capable of cutting space itself, but Acnologia was a mythical figure. Cutting off a piece of his tail was one thing: actually bisecting him was another matter altogether. As proud and arrogant as the twilight dragoness might be she wasn't so foolish as to believe that a fellow dragon, especially one of Acnologia's caliber, couldn't cause trouble for her if she wasn't careful.

At least for the moment things were working in her favour again: ignoring the claw marks on the underside of her body she had barely been injured at all, whereas Acnologia had already received several twilight breaths and had sizeable holes in the membranes of his wings. The fact that where his blood touched the ground the ground began to sizzle was concerning, but not an immediate issue. Akeya kept avoiding his claws and his maw as the king of dragons trashed and lashed out at her, bucking his body and attempting to roll the two over so he would be on top once more.

A very, very small part of Akeya was disappointed that she couldn't use Acnologia for something more productive. Such a powerful male dragon... however that was just a silly fantasy. Acnologia was too dangerous and too insane. She had to kill him while she had the chance.

While she was still gathering her energy for what would probably be the strongest Horizon she'd ever formed Acnologia's maw suddenly began to burn blue, raising Akeya's internal alarms to the maximum. Was he planning a point-blank breath attack? If that hit there wouldn't be anything left of her! She'd hoped to finish this quickly, but it looked like Acnologia had other plans.

The twilight dragoness shot up into the sky, just in time to avoid Acnologia's bite attack. While it wasn't a breath attack she could tell from the magic power that emanated from the beast's maw that if that had hit her it wouldn't have been pretty. No longer wanting to put it off any longer she slammed her wings together and released her Horizon, this time directly towards the ground and Acnologia who was laying on top of the ground.

The king of dragons rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding being split in two by the dreadsome attack. However due to his position he couldn't get all of him out of the way: Akeya watched as one of his wings was severed with surgical precision. More than surgical precision, even. The stump barely bled, even as Acnologia roared with enough force that it actually made Akeya dizzy for a moment, her eardrums complaining about the abuse. Shaking her head she watched as Acnologia got onto all four claws, glaring up at her with clear hatred. However with one wing missing he looked lobsided, and he definitely couldn't leave the ground any more.

At least, that's what she'd thought. As she thought of her next move Acnologia was already acting. Akeya formed several bolts of light and shot them down at the apocalypse beast, but he dodged them with ease as magic flowed out of his lost limb and formed a blue-and-black substitute for the wing. While it clearly wasn't fully solid it was good enough for the sentient disaster to fly once more, demonstrated by him flapping his wings and ascending as Akeya kept her distance.

However by this point it was clear that Acnologia was hurting: he'd lost a wing, was covered in small wounds, had trouble flying, and was expending quite a bit of magic staying afloat. As powerful as he might be he wasn't infinite in power, and against another dragon that could end up being fatal. Most likely the only reason he was willing to expend this much energy was because he had realized that killing Akeya was the only way to be sure of his own survival. He wasn't going to outlast her at this point.

He charged her again, but this time it wasn't a mindless straightforward charge. Instead he was hunting her down: as Akeya swerved to the side he followed. The twilight dragoness narrowed her eyes before turning around and flying away, Acnologia in hot pursuit. The two of them streaked across the sky, the pursuer leaving a trail of his death magic from the hastily formed wing.

Akeya began to gather her energy again. This time she'd make sure she hit him.
