Nazo was indeed a mysterious place, but what were they to expect? From what Zachariah read about the place, physics, logic, and reality itself were distorted.  As opposed to the considerably ‘normal’ colors of Fiore, Nazo was filled with bright, contrasting colors.  The grass here was a light blue, and the leaves on the trees were the color of the ocean.  Mountains were afloat in the air, some upside down, and waterfalls appeared and streamed in every which direction.  The water was orange, and the sky was a clear visage into space; colorless and starry.  Zachariah ogled at every new thing, but reigned himself back into work mode.  There was a task at hand, one Zachariah wasn’t particularly proud of.  Per the usual reason behind his otherworldly travels, him and his partner Beira were here to put to rest the magnificent Phoenix.  This time around, they were here for the bird carrying the powers of fire and flames.

Due to this feisty description of the next phoenix, Zachariah expected it to reside in a more hellish landscape, but magic worked in odd ways.  As of right now, he was considerably well rested and healed, despite the eerie feeling in his gut.  Before departing from their last mission on the ice planet Kosestsu, he made sure to remove any battle scars and bruises caused by the last bout.   Zachariah scanned the sky, searching for the indicative pillar of light, but was confused by the shifting terrain.  Light bent in different ways here, and the pillar could very well be curving across the sky like a shooting star.  “This place is...ethereal to say the least,” Zachariah commented.  As he looked down, he noted that every step he took caused orange flowers to spring up from the ground like vines.

Cat-like creatures pounced around between floating islands, catching birds mid-air and taking their meals into the trees.  Other than that, Zachariah didn’t see many other animals wandering about.  Nevertheless, he kept his guard up, as always.  One never knew what lurked in the darkness.  When the path suddenly became dark, Zachariah summoned a Morning Star and held it up like a torch to light up a bubble around Beira and himself.  Eventually, they came to the edge of the island they were walking upon, Zachariah nearly tripping over himself and falling into oblivion.  After steadying himself, Zachariah increased the radius of the light and stared into the distance, finding an island some yards away.  Even with gravity much looser here, Zachariah wasn’t sure if he could make that jump without magical assistance.  He looked down over the edge too, where more islands floated about just above a raging ocean.  “Well, isn’t this a dilemma?”

As natural light flooded back in and illuminated the landscape, Zachariah could see a pyre of fire reaching into space in the distance, but moving across the horizon.  While he could see the shrine from here, it rested on a moving island, constantly hiding behind other pieces of terrain.  Zachariah thought about summoning the Starlight Surfer, but feared the risk of colliding with an island or being caught in the maw of a wild cat.  On the other hand, it would cut their trip time virtually in half.  “Looks like we have two choices here.  I can carry us straight to the shrine with the Starlight Surfer, or we can hop between islands until we reach it.  What do you think?”

Nazo. Quite an impressive planet, with very quirky characteristics. Beira was sure she would have been rather taken with the planet, if she wasn't having serious misgivings about meeting the fourth phoenix. On the flip side, it seemed the whole bird hunting thing would soon be rounded up. Still, the idea of having to fight a fiery bird, with its element being more or less an antithesis of the Utgardian's, was not a thought which Beira took delight in mulling over. Still, that which had to be done had to be done, and as Beira had decided to begin this mission, she was minded to see it to the end, bitter or no.

"To say the least," Beira echoed her partner's words, looking at the scene before her. Maybe it was just her being too traditional, but she had the feeling that eating fruit from a tree with blue leaves was probably going to be a lot more poisonous than it would be nutritious. Fortunately, the mages had not come here to eat, and as at the moment, Beira had not yet seen any fruits. Hopefully, there would be no need to seek sustenance on this strange, though beautiful, planet; there was nothing calming nor comforting in the thought of drinking orange colored water, even if it tasted and, aside the color, behaved, for all intents and purposes, like water. Beira walked beneath a huge chunk of rock floating overhead, hoping that whatever gravity was holding it up would not suddenly decide, when she was beneath the rock, to give up and release the rock from its grasp. Her worries were unfounded, and soon she had forgotten the threat of the rock, and was now looking at another potential threat: jumping cats.

Okay, they looked like cats, but cats did not have neon glowing streaks and spots running along their bodies. And they were black, so they were very difficult to see in the darkness, unless their streaks and spots glowed, and it seemed these creatures were capable of regulating when and how their markings shone. Beira was sure she wouldn't have an issue with the cats trying to ambush her; she had her reliable sixth sense to depend on. However, the ability to see was very welcoming, and Zach had that covered. The chunk of floating land on which the two mages walked suddenly ended, almost sending the light bearer off the edge of the island and down into the depths of a surging orange ocean which Beira was sure remained unplumbed. She reached out and grabbed his arm, though he seemed to have managed to successfully regain his balance without her help. All the same, one couldn't be too careful.

The floating islands were a good degree of space from one another. While Beira was sure her ability to skate on air would help her to traverse the islands with relative ease, leaving her partner to fend for himself was selfish. Besides, teamwork often served to conserve energy for both parties, while offering mutual advantages. "If it won't be a drain on you, I think the Starlight Surfer would be a very good idea," the Utgardian replied. "It's quite stable, you seem to be in total control of it, and while you're steering it, I can, as you Fioreans say, ride shotgun."

It was always calming to know Beira was by his side, as the two mages balanced each other quite well.  Sometimes they literally balanced each other, a prime example being Beira catching him before he plummeted to his certain death over a cliffside.  As he steadied himself on the edge, he dusted himself off.  An island had passed above them, dusting them in a soil-like residue as it made its way across the sky.  What irritated Zach the most was the irregularity of everything; nothing seemed to move in a pattern.  The islands moved at whatever pace they pleased in odd directions.  The mage tried to track each one to see if they maintained a memorable route, but they either zig-zagged through the air or backtracked after a while.  The longer he examined and observed, the island containing the shrine grew farther and farther.  “Alrighty then, Starlight Surfer it is,” he said, and summoned the orange board just on the edge of the island.  He boarded steadily and extended it so that Beira could accompany him, then extended his hand to assist her.  “I do hope you’re not afraid of extreme heights.”

As soon as she stepped on, Zachariah would start their aerial journey at a slow pace, aiming to island hop to conserve as much energy as possible.  Once they were in the clear, open sky, a pit formed in Zachariah’s stomach.  There was absolutely nothing beneath them for miles, save for ant-sized islands far below.  Above was a dreary sight as well, except for the stars and birds that dared soar higher into the atmosphere. “It’s almost peaceful, if you can look past being thousands of miles in the sky,” Zachariah remarked.  He kept tabs on islands in his peripherie, but his main focus was on the fiery island in the distance.  It drifted fast, but the two of them were faster.  The mage quietly hoped that their battle would not be aerial, but it was beginning to look that way.  As they flew past cavernous islands and terrain with heavy foliage, Zachariah steered clear of predatory cats that might try to pounce onto them, glaring at them to show them who’s boss.

Save for the breeze and infrequent bird calls, Nazo was mostly quiet.  Zachariah wondered if there were people that lived here, and wondered how life could possibly be sustained here.  Structures seemed to be far and few; one or two wrecked campsites from what he assumed were previous phoenix hunters, and the shrine.  Then another question begged him: where did all these phoenix shrines come from?  Had the shrines been built by ancient people? Were they in awe of the phoenixes? or fear?  There could be no way to surely know.  The board passed over a v-shaped flock of birds heading in the same direction, and Zachariah took a moment to ogle at them before an island passed beneath them.

But then, as if inevitably, disaster struck.  A disc made of earth hurled towards them from below and split the Starlight Surfer in half, and both mages went down with it.  Zachariah steadied himself midair and summoned a piece of the Starlight Surfer beneath Beira and slowed her fall, then did his best to summon a piece beneath him as another disc was hurled their way.  He broke it apart with a Morning Star, but could not find the source, and watched as the shrine drifted farther from them. “Can you find where its coming from?” he shouted, abruptly stopping the boards of solid light in the air and using them as platforms.  Another earthen disc soared towards them at breakneck speed, but Zachariah simply shifted the two of them a few feet out of the way.  He did his best to unite the two, but a siege of discs tracked their movements.

As the two halves began to near each other, Zachariah found himself moving at inhuman speeds to avoid the projectiles, hoping Beira wouldn’t get motion sick from the constant turns and barrel rolls.  But his partner was only an arm out of reach, and eventually the two passed over an island some yards below, and Zachariah looked up at Beira with a nervous smirk.  “I can catch you if we jump onto it!” he exclaimed, and bent at the knees to prepare his leap.  He broke his portion of the Starlight Surfer just after his jump, landing with a crackle onto the floating island.  He lowered Beira as much as possible, but also had to maneuver her out of harm’s way.  “Ready?”

Z&B: Fire in Nazo | Job Empty Re: Z&B: Fire in Nazo | Job

"I think it's safe to say that I can manage heights," the Utgardian replied in answer to Zach's statement about fear of heights. While she was incapable of flight, Beira's control over nether rime allowed her to be able to break a fall, or even step on air to gradually ascend, so she wasn't worried about falling, though she certainly felt it would be quite troublesome to find one's self falling through an endless eternity of nothingness. Did Nazo have any terra firma, any continental landmass? The flying chunks of earth did not count. One of these days, maybe she would explore the planet to see. But today was not the day.

She took the hand of the light mage, and the journey through the void of Nazo's sky began. It was weird how, as Beira looked around, she noticed that some, not all, of the floating islands had their own idiosyncratic gravities, pulling whatever came near them towards their own centers. She watched with keen interest as objects caught between two or more proximate islands with personal gravities were subjected to the strain of being tugged from multiple directions at once. What she found a bit unsettling was that, just by looking, it was almost impossible to tell which islands had normal gravity and which ones had eccentric gravity.

"Whoa," the blonde mage said, as an island passed overhead, and her hair rose and fell with its passing. The feel of experiencing gravity from two different sources was a little disorienting, but Beira was sure it would not be that much of a disturbance. The island to which Zach steered his Starlight Speeder seemed to be tracing a haphazard pattern away from the shining vehicle, but the Sabertooth mage's board was faster, and the distance was closing between the mages and the chunk of earth from which emanated what was most likely the resting place of the final phoenix. Very soon, the mages would get there, and there would be battle to be done, and they would walk away with the phoenix's stone. Beira was sure of it. The battle was probably not going to be a walk in the park, but she was confident.

The flying disc of rock that bisected the Starlight Surfer had been sensed by Beira, but she had not paid enough notice to it to attempt to prevent the rock from striking their vehicle. A short, involuntary scream escaped her lungs as the firm board beneath her gave way to empty air. Before she could manage herself and do something about her plummeting problem, Zach had summoned another board of light beneath her. She grimaced, not because she did not appreciate her colleague coming to her aid, but because a part of her felt like her behavior demonstrated a need for her to be saved. Zach was doing a good job of manipulating the separate boards on which he and Beira perched, and the God Slayer was beginning to feel she was not doing anything. The light mage asked if she could track whatever was tossing the rocks at them, and Beira perked up. That would not be difficult to do... or so she thought. As Zach guided the boards closer together, he had to begin performing series of acrobatics, both with his board and Beira's, to ensure that they didn't get smashed out of the sky. While the Utgardian did not get sick or anything, the sudden changes of orientation were enough to scramble her sixth sense, and she could not determine anything for the time being.

With the approach of an island, Zach suggested that they get onto it, and was quick to leap onto it. Beira followed suit, jumping into Zach's arms. Feeling uncomfortable at the position she was in, she quickly let herself to the ground, though she nodded at him gratefully. "Thanks." The rock attacks seemed to have ceased, which probably meant a number of things, but Beira felt that the two major ones which made the most sense to her, based on the situation were these: either their assailant simply wanted them out of the air, or their transition to the island on which they currently stood had somehow moved them out of its vision or range. Beira preferred to believe the latter scenario. For a moment, Beira stretched her senses, probing, but sensing nothing out of the ordinary. Then she felt a motion beneath the two mages, and, expecting trouble, pushed Zach as hard as she could, while moving herself away. From where the two mages had stood only until a second ago, a sharp, jagged spike of earth protruded vertically from the ground. Then the spike disintegrated for a brief moment before reforming as a golem of earth, which fired a slab of rock at the God Slayer, something identical to what had smashed the Starlight Surfer.

"There's our culprit," Beira announced, dodging the projectile, while creating what looked like a drill made of nether rime on one arm and thrusting it at the creature. It blasted a hole through the golem, and the stones that made up the construct's body fell away, revealing some airy form, which suddenly merged with the drill-like weapon of Beira's. She quickly pulled away, as the being reconstructed itself from the nether rime which she had used to attack it.

"By the sweltering hells..." she muttered, as she gazed on a golem made of nether rime.

    Post by Lemony.Boy 31st January 2020, 10:45 pm

Zachariah slowed down, glancing back at Beira to make sure she was all right.  Rock and other various earthen materials didn’t cease to fly at them.  The island shielded them from the barrage of projectiles, but they could not safely leave without being pummeled by a boulder.  He slowed his breathing and relaxed his body, watching Beira focus her senses.  It was surreal; battling in a place like this, and almost majestic to watch her work her magic.  Though, she suddenly shoved Zachariah out of the way and he almost reached out to hold onto her.  But a spear of earth sprouted from the earth, separating the two of them.  It had a familiar vibration to it, similar to a creature he’s faced before.  Though, the young light mage could not quite put a finger on it.  The creature was twice the height and width of both mages.  And despite its size and heavy assets, it seemed totally unhindered by its own weight, perhaps a testament to the uninhibited physics of Nazo.  “What in the hell,” Zachariah said, mouth agape.  The monster then struck, hurling whistling spears of rime his way.  The deft mage ducked out of the way and hid behind a piece of terrain uplifted by the creature’s entry.

He constructed a pair of Morning Stars in his hands and hurled it at the beast.  A pulsation of orange heat briefly warmed the atmosphere and sent light across every direction, but it didn’t seem to make a dent in the creature’s dense body.  The golem twisted around, searching for its opponents once again, and Zachariah had the eerie feeling it was getting ever so closer to him.  He couldn’t hear Beira’s voice from his position.  All he hoped was that she didn’t see the golem as a monster of her own creation, but simply as another beast to slay.  In the distance, he could see the island containing the shrine growing ever so distant, the fiery pillar of light fading into the foggy limits of his vision.  For a minute, he wondered what sunsets would be like here, if the world had a horizon.  But the quaking steps of the golem were too distracting to ignore.  Zachariah quickly decided to leap from his hiding place into the open, only to find that the golem was waiting for him with its arm extended, pointed at his face.  He felt the cold radiating from its tip, and a sudden blast of pure iciness blew him away.

Icicles formed on his elbows and the back of his arms, and a thin film of ice formed on the entirety of his body.  He stumbled over himself, weighed down by the frozen water.  Amidst his distraction, the creature reared up a punch and swung its fist towards him.  “Oof!”  Zachariah grunted and flew into a rock close to the edge, and watched as the golem closed the distance between them, ready to throw him over.  The young Saber was slow to regain his bearings, having the wind knocked out of him severely.  He extended his hands, conjuring three Spectral Drills to penetrate the golem’s hard body and leaving behind three steaming exit holes  Though, the golem did not seem to be overly concerned, as it merely paused to examine its wounds, then carried on its charge towards Zachariah.  The young mage dipped out of the way to the best of his ability, feeling a new soreness in his shoulder and a weight in his hip.  The direct hit from the golem really did a number on his body.  He was able to escape the golem’s hardened charge, but wasn’t sure if the next blow would be fatal to the mission.

Zachariah felt his senses slowly build themselves up again.  His breathing hitched slightly but was otherwise steady now, and his vision had united itself into a single, coherent picture rather than a prism of different things.  He charged up another attack, standing his ground firmly and holding his open hands out forward.  Blue beams escaped his palms, hitting the golem with the Unison I spell, but to no avail.  The light merely bounced off the creature’s smooth surface.  The light mage swore, “shit!” and slid underneath it, trying to reunite with Beira.

Once he joined back up with her, he shook the ice from his body and tried to play off the pain in his shoulder.  “Nothing like a good warm-up, right?” he joked between breaths.  To think, a golem of nether rime was the least of their concerns in a place like this.  On top of the upcoming battle with the phoenix, and trying to navigate Nazo itself, the golem was simply another bridge to cross.   A very tough, icy bridge, that was.  Zachariah steadied himself and charged up a single Spectral Drill, confidently eyeing his partner and awaiting her signal.

Z&B: Fire in Nazo | Job Empty Re: Z&B: Fire in Nazo | Job

Post by Fraag 4th February 2020, 3:47 pm

As Beira studied the hulking form, she felt she was beginning to gain some insights concerning the strange and massive monster. Initially, the being was made of earth, but when she had attacked it, it had transformed into nether rime. It seemed that such a creature as this was naturally made of something more ethereal, but it was capable of gaining a more corporeal form when it came in contact with solid matter. Now, something had to be done before it ripped off the head of her mission partner.

"Zach!" she yelled, cupping her hands to her mouth to gain the light mage's attention. He however didn't seem to hear her. It was almost definitely because the golem was rather noisy, with all its joints grinding against one another, although lubricated by the strange magic that permeated this weird planet, making the normally impossible motions of this strange animated creature somehow doable. Zach had attacked the monster with his light magic, but all to no avail; it was as though the monster was not even fazed by his attacks. Nonetheless, Zach seemed to be the target of the golem. It didn't even seem to take into consideration the fact that Beira was physically present there.

Not knowing whether to be offended by the disregard with which the golem treated her, or whether to be delighted that it paid no attention to her, Beira decided that whatever attacks would be counted successful against the monster would have to be attacks of no physical type. The Spectral Drills were apparently more effective than the Morning Stars, though Beira had to admit that the level to which they were effective was quite questionable. Still, the light projectiles could punch holes in the body of the golem, and Beira was sure that this observation would have to be enough to handle the monster. In a stroke of good fortune, Zach was able to get back to Beira, after his short stint of cat and mouse with the creature of dark ice.

"As long as the warm ups don't involve you being beaten into a bloody smear on a gravity-confused planet, probably thousands of miles away from wherever you can call home, sure, there's nothing like one," the Utgardian maiden replied in response to the joke her companion made. "In any case, there are two things I have discovered about this beast, and those should be enough to deal with it. Firstly, it seems to be able to use any solid it comes in contact with to construct a body for itself, which is why it is currently touting my ice as its form. Secondly, your light drill things can make holes in the golem. We can use both tidbits of knowledge to our advantage." She took a step forward then stopped. "There's a third thing. It cannot fly... or at least, I hope it can't. Anyhow, let's be rid of that thing. Aim its face and wait for my signal."

The idea was to get the golem to fall off the stone island on which it combated the pair of mages. Beira charged forward, as she created a long sword of nether rime, which she used to attack the golem to no avail. But the idea was not to damage it. It seemed almost impervious to true damage. The golem, for its part, began following the ice mage, trying to smash her with its massive hands. Beira made sure it failed at every turn. But as the golem attempted to crush her, she gently and carefully guided it towards the edge of the island. Soon, she had nowhere to dodge to, the golem before her, and a gaping abyss behind. The God Slayer made a platform of nether rime to jut out from the island, upon which she now stood, to apparently avoid the arms of the swinging golem. Interested in barreling her off the island, the golem charged the mage.

One moment, she was there, about to be rammed into by the charging hulk. The next, she seemed to dissolve into smoke and runes, only to instantaneously appear behind the golem, on safe territory. The golem, aware that it was on unsafe ground, turned  and crouched slightly, ready to spring off the ice platform and back onto the island. "Now!" Beira called, dispelling the magic which she had used to create the nether rime platform. If Zach responded as she hoped, the Spectral Drill burning a hole through the head of the golem would most likely prevent it from making the leap it wanted to make, as the ice beneath it disappeared. There would be nowhere left to go but down.

    Post by Lemony.Boy 9th February 2020, 10:33 pm

Zachariah fell back on his attacks slightly, following Beira’s lead.  The Utgardian maiden made a snide reply to his witty statement.  “If only…” he drawled.  She then remarked that the creature cannot (hopefully) fly, and although that was a feat he would truly wish to see, he also knew that a winged golem would spell absolute death for both mages.  Zachariah uncomfortably chuckled at that prospect, but nodded at Beira and awaited its signal.  Although excruciating pain coursed throughout pieces of his shoulder, he was able to dodge the golem’s attacks as Beira summoned a sword of nether rime.  Albeit futile, Beira seemed to have achieved her goal.  The golem’s focus was totally on her now, relentless and unforgiving.  Its strikes caused quakes in the small island, and every pound came closer and closer to Beira’s toes, threatening to crush her.  As Beira ducked and dodged, dancing at every corner, Zachariah waited.  At least from his perspective, she was dancing on the edge, evading danger at the very last second.

The golem recklessly swung and tried to smash Beira into the dirt, then chased her to the end of the island.  When she leapt over the edge, Zachariah’s heart sank.  But, seeing her safely stand on the tip of her nether rime spit, he sighed audibly in relief.  Zachariah ran to get into firing range, watching as the clueless hulk of rock and ice charged onto the platform.  Once Beira disappeared into smoke, Zachariah called to the light, charging it up beyond its normal capabilities.  Heat spilled out from the white light, and stray beams of white lasers escaped the edges of the Spectral Drills.  Beira reappeared at Zachariah’s side, and unleashed the signal.  Zachariah grunted and released the three Spectral Drills from his palms.  The trio of crystallized light chased each other through the sky and united into a single, large spear.  The tip entered the golem’s head before it could even attempt to jump and crackled against the stone.  The golem reached up to figure out what happened to its head, but, almost cartoonishly, fell and split into pieces.  The pile of stone and nether rime whistled on their way down, endlessly plummeting into the tumultuous sea below.  What would happen once it landed? Zachariah knew not, nor did he want to know.  Before moving on, Zachariah briefly healed himself and offered his services to his partner once again, should she have any major injuries from the bout.

“Now where did that pesky shrine go?” he asked, scanning the horizon around them.  The fire was faint, but still burned across the sky.  Zachariah traced the tip of the spire back to its source, which was increasingly far.  It drifted between two floating mountains and beneath a levitating valley, then suddenly stopped, hovering in the center of the sun.  Zachariah squinted to try to find the actual shrine, but only saw the small speck in the bright light.  “Looks like it stopped, but it’s much farther away than before,” he observed.  As he was getting ready to summon the Starlight Surfer to carry them over the open abyss, an island rose up on the edge of their current one, then another after that, and another furthermore.  Zachariah hesitantly stepped onto it, and it did not budge of fall.  The young mage shrugged, then continued to walk as the islands before the planet decided to have other plans and pull the islands back down into the sea.

The sky dimmed to a deep, rich purple, almost making the world difficult to see in.  Zachariah called upon a small cube of light to illuminate the way, then looked at Beira to make sure she was doing alright.  “The last phoenix to slay,” he began.  “Isn’t that...sentimental?”  Whether the island bridge forming underfoot would lead them to the shrine was a mystery, but Zachariah sure hoped it did.  Though, as the two traversed the sky, the sound of claws on stone pierced the air.  When Zachariah looked to his left, one of the predatory cats from earlier climbed over the side of their bridge, and Zachariah gasped when its sharp talons nearly eviscerated him.  Another one of the cats rose up from the right, and the mages were presented with two options once again; run? or fight?

The two cats lowly growled and approached them with slow steps.  Their breaths smelled like bones and rot, striking fear into the young light mage.  Though they shouldn’t be much of a problem, Zachariah wasn’t sure of any other way to get across the bridge.

The plan worked exactly as Beira had hoped, with the Sabertooth mage firing three projectiles of light that fused together to form a bigger spear of scintillating energy. The spike of light passed through the golem's head, causing the creature to comically reach for what had been its head, as though it was trying to process what had just happened to its unfortunate noggin. Then it fell to pieces, just as the structure on which it stood fell, along with its remains, down into the abyss below. Beira drew cautiously to the edge and looked over, seeing nothing as the falling objects had been obscured from view by one of the floating islands. Hopefully, gravity would not get reversed and return the dismembered golem to the rock on which the two mages stood. How long was it going to fall, anyway?

"I'm alright, thank you," Beira said, refusing Zach's aid but having the courtesy to do it with a grateful smile. "I am presently not injured, though I wager I might be glad for your help by the end of this ordeal." She then sought to find the island on which the shrine was located, which initially seemed to have vanished, until Zach spotted the thing, standing against the glare of the evening (or was it really evening?) sun. As she prepared herself for another ride across the depths of Nazo's heights, a fitting contrast for a planet like Nazo in her opinion, a rock rose from beneath to position itself before the mages, with another one doing the same just beyond it, and another as well. It seemed the planet had discovered the presence of the two mages, as well as their intentions, and was directing them to their goal. Or was it that by defeating the golem they had passed a sort of test? Whichever the case, the path forward was literally before them.

Zach stepped onto the rock, which stayed stable. Like him, Beira judged that the floating islands which made a path for the duo were stable enough, and gingerly paced after her companion, fearing the same thing as he: that the islands would suddenly forget that they were trying to help the mages reach a phoenix shrine, and begin carrying out the fickle will of whatever, or whoever, moved them. Or maybe these islands all had identities and minds of their own. For now, that could not be proved or disproved, so Beira left that line of thought hanging, and pranced after the light mage. As the duo progressed, however, the light gradually dimmed, until seeing became rather difficult. Her partner created illumination, then turned to face her, as he commented on the fact that they were nearing the end of their strange and long quest. "I'm not shedding any tears, but I'll be glad when this mission is over," she replied. "Let's just hope that there are no new twists to the story when we're done."

Beira sensed the predators even as they mounted the rocks on which the two mages walked. She formed a quarterstaff of ice and deflected one of the claws of the pantherine beast facing her, before swinging the butt of the staff into the cat's face. It didn't seem impressed, as it growled at her, preparing to pounce. "Eww!" the Utgardian exclaimed, taking a step backwards, as her nose caught a whiff of its breath. "Don't let these things bite you, . I fear to think of what diseases lie in their maws." As if governed by the same force, the two beasts crouched to spring. There was a slight clack on the stone, as the beasts leaped at the mages, claws extended. "Precept 91!" the God Slayer yelled, focusing her mind, "Pulsus Mentis!" A burst of green-white fire emanated from the young mage's head, flicking her blonde locks harmlessly, before devastating everything around the two mages and leaving them unharmed. For a moment, Beira hoped that her spell would not disrupt the rocks which held them up above the void. The rocks held. There was the sound of more claws on stone, even as Beira sensed more cats coming... or were those the same ones she had just blown off the rocks?

"Run!" Beira cried, grabbing Zach's hand involuntarily and sprinting towards the shrine. A giant cat clambered on the rock bridge just in front of them, only to receive a solid boot to its jaw. It yelped as it was flung off the floating rock bridge. Another came and got knocked off as well. The point seemed to keep knocking the cats off the bridge, as they ran towards the shrine. Where were those things even coming from anyway? After a while of running and dislodging cats, Beira saw the shrine up ahead. As she got into its vicinity, the cats stopped, growling as they slunk backwards into the darkness. "Well," the Utgardian said panting, grateful that the chase was over, "the only way is forward, I suppose."

The bridge reminded Zach of the time he crossed the Librarium Obscuri with Beira, though this time he felt more secure in his steps.  He laughed at the hope Beira had, that there would be no future twists in their journey.  “I hope you haven’t jinxed us with another golem,” he half heartedly joked.  Zachariah let the smaller light fade away before tossing a Morning Star into the air above them and willing it to burst, acting as a second sun to give them more vision over the terrain, or lack thereof.  The cats snarled and lowered, their limbs lithe and eager to pounce.  Perhaps they were famished, and the last time they had a full belly was when a previous traveller met his unfortunate demise here, seeking out the phoenix as well.  Zachariah frowned and pinched his nose, then simply wielded his dagger and javelined it at one of the cats.  He had aimed for the predator’s skull, but it dodged left and the knife skittered onto the edge of the bridge.  The cat roared and swiped at him, but Zachariah leapt and sprang off its head to retrieve his knife.  He used the Coyote Claw ability, and severely thinned out the cat’s mangled hide.  Lacerations formed around its joints and on its side, but the creature did not wail out in pain.

Beira herself held up a staff formed from ice and blocked one of the cat’s enormous claws.  She exclaimed disgust, having taken the unfortunate full whiff of the cat’s breath.  They smelled of death and plague, abject horror.  As green fire enveloped the battlefield, Zachariah enhanced the attack with a spell of his own, casting the Ultraviolent Flash to blind the cats and leave them burned.  The rocks trembled beneath them for a second but remained firm.  But, that would not be the end of their battle.  Talons dragged across the stones, sounding like the scream of a child as they scraped the granite.  Although not loud, the pitch made Zachariah, a grown man, want to cover his ears and scream back at them.

An endless wave seemed to come after them, as if the whole pride had been alerted of fresh meat nearby.  Zachariah found himself being dragged by Beira away from danger, and he couldn’t blame her for doing that.  Staying behind and trying to fight these creatures would be suicide.  They howled and snarled as they chased them, clamoring ever closer.  He left behind Morning Stars on the bridge as they sprinted away, not even looking back to see the explosion.  He could hear the bursting light like a crackle of thunder behind them, and felt the heat briefly on his shoulders.  It wouldn’t be enough to take all of them out, but would slow them down a great deal.  The shrine came closer into view as they crossed what felt like miles of stone.  Even from where they stood on the bridge, he could feel the heat of the shrine like the sun on a summer day.

Once they crossed over to step onto the shrine’s island, the cats ceased their pursuit.  And they had good reason to.  While they made up in number, their strength paled in comparison to that of the mighty phoenix.  The orb levitated before them, and Zachariah took a deep breath, relishing in the almost nostalgic feeling.  He approached and reached up to it, shutting his eyes as it brightened and conjured the mighty bird.  As if to stretch its wings after a long rest, the phoenix extended its limbs and let out a piercing cry into the sky.  It swirled and soared above them, then proceeded to open up and fire a malstrom of red hot crystals.  One of the crystals cut his shoulder and singed his sleeve.  The attack was so violent and sudden that Zachariah could only think to put his hands together and cast the Voidbane to stop the firing.  Although the bird was barely out of range, the bright white flash petrified the incoming projectiles and reduced their strength.  “Here we go again,” Zachariah said, getting into a fighting stance.  He transformed into Heimdallr, casting a bright glow across Nazo.  “I’m ready when you are.” He turned to Beira and nodded.

The bird utilized the incredibly difficult terrain to its winged advantage, looping around mountains and beneath the island.  Zachariah cast the Spatial Reflector to increase the power of both of their spells and threw three Spectral Drills through it, but the phoenix was too agile and dodged.  His drills collided with an island and cracked it with a resounding burst of light.  As the phoenix flew, the wind slowly began to gain speed, and Zachariah feared they might be swept away eventually.  He followed the bird’s flight path, but could not identify a pattern.  It was incredibly hot as it passed by and left burn marks on the rocks it neared.

Z&B: Fire in Nazo | Job Empty Re: Z&B: Fire in Nazo | Job

As soon as the two mages got to the shrine, the skulking cats slunk back, until they were gone, leaving only their eyes visible in the gloom, till eventually, even their eyes vanished. There was no time to do any sightseeing though, as the phoenix materialized, this one being a being of fire. It proceeded to execute a preemptive strike against the two mages, firing shards of fiery matter at them. Beira did a bit of skipping here and there, in a bid to avoid the phoenix's attacks, but she couldn't dodge them all. She got a scrape on her left thigh, and narrowly missed another shard, though she saw a few strands of blonde hair flying in the wake of the near hit. "I didn't ask for a haircut, you overgrown turkey! Now you are so going to get it."

Zach's spell managed to weaken the other shards, which were avoided with little to no incident. At his activation of his Heimdallr spell and indication of his readiness to do battle, the God Slayer nodded. "First stop will be getting that bird to slow down, or if we're lucky, halt entirely. Luckily, I think I have just the thing. Let's go!" As if the winged menace heard her words, the bastard bird began flying among and between Nazo's crazy geography, frustrating the mages with its aerial agility. But Beira was not going to be easily dissuaded. If she could not get the bird to slow down by cutting its speed, she could give it a reason to slow down by affecting its sight. "Winter God Chaos!" As Beira created the storm of nether rime, the phoenix began experiencing visibility issues, and got blind the moment it entered the aura of stormy ice wind.

Seeing as the bird still had a decent amount of space to fly around safely without colliding with anything, Beira immediately summoned her Flagellum Orci, and using its Extensio and Laqueus abilities, was able to get hold of a small, yet sizeable, piece of floating rock, which she pulled into the way of the speeding bird. Without the use of its eyes, it went straight into the rock at breakneck speed, as the floating island exploded in a shower of fire, dust and stones, all accompanied with a very loud squawk, which Beira felt was very satisfactory to hear. All the same, until the bird was bowing to them and surrendering the stone, she was not going to stop and heave a sigh of relief. Immediately, she utilized the Winter God Barrage, as a statue of ice formed behind her and exploded into flying shards of nether rime, each shard homing in on the flying bird.

As the ice barraged the bird, it screeched, creating miniature forms of itself, which all, as though with one mind, swooped at the two mages. Beira immediately summoned the Winter God Shield, and retreated behind it, as the tiny phoenixes smashed against the ice wall. For a while, the wall held, but soon cracks began to form in the all. "I don't think my wall is going to--" Beira was interrupted by one of the last mini phoenixes tearing through the wall and smashing into her. She crossed her hands before her to defend against the bird, but as it struck her, the fiery bird exploded, the force of the detonation sending her off the edge of the island the mages were on. Quickly, Beira created a floating disc of nether rime and bounced on it, performing an elegant somersault to bring her back to the shrine island. But even before she landed on the floating island, she took in a deep breath while still flipping, and as she righted herself, exhaled a large vortex of nether rime at the phoenix, which was still suffering the effects of blindness.

    "Winter God Bellow!"

The vortex of nether rime smashed into the bird, sending it careening into another floating island. "We're making progress," Beira called to Zach, "though I think this battle is far from over." Zach would notice that the phoenix was flying much slower than it had been before. Beira, for her part, decided to use the moment to catch her breath, and hope her partner would make good use of the opportunity of a much slower target presented to him.

Z&B: Fire in Nazo | Job Empty Re: Z&B: Fire in Nazo | Job

Zach did his best to track the bird with his eyes and strike it from his position on the island, constantly volleying Morning Stars and Spectral Drills to chase after it.  Though, his light either burst mere feet away from the bird or collided with the rocky side of an island.  Zach felt his ears get hot from frustration, but realize the heat was emanating from the flying firebird.  Beira was able to effectively strike it with and severely maim the creature, drastically slowing it down.  By now, the creature was flying blind, nearly colliding into the islands it was once using to shield itself from the two mages’ attacks.  “Nice job partner!” he exclaimed, and shielded his eyes as it crashed into an island and exploded, sending molten rock and ash their way.  That event in itself raised his adrenaline, and he cheered her on until miniature phoenixes formed a cloud in the sky and chased after them.

Beira’s ice shield defended them for the most part, but Zachariah could tell Beira was withering, and sprang to action himself.  He was briefly distracted by an explosion sending her over the edge, but she was a capable mage, and such recovered with grace and landed back onto their turf.  Zachariah focused on the bird’s now less rapid movements and traced its path with his eyes.  Smaller islands had formed from the shattered rocks the bird crashed into, and floated haphazardly in the air.  The sight of the mass stone wreckage gave Zachariah an idea, and he jolted towards the edge following Beira’s Winter God Bellow.  He stood on the edge of the island and pointed his finger outwards, pink light beginning to escape it.  The horizon glowed a rosy color and space was temporarily disrupted, allowing Zachariah to carefully shift islands into where he wanted them to be.  He used the Light of Ruin spell to form a ring of stone to hover around the bird, then crouched down and used the Bifrost Call to propel himself into the bird’s hot mass.  The mere touch of its feathers seared his skin, but he held on and pounded his fist onto it.  Immediately, he called upon another spell, and glass formed from the rocks surrounding the phoenix.  Soon, they were surrounded by glassy rock, and a light pierced through the air and struck it, then bounced rapidly and struck the phoenix from all angles.  As the Mirror’s Edge spell did its job, piercing the bird with a laser in every which way, Zachariah fell back down to the shrine island and deactivated Heimdallr, placing a hand on his knee to catch his breath.  His body steamed, clothes and skin seared in some places, but he felt otherwise no pain from the massive adrenaline in his veins.

His spell ceased, as did the bird, whose body came slowly drifting down and rested on the island.  Its fire slowly extinguished, and it vanished, only to reappear before them in the form of a phantom, present the last orb to them, and disappear forever.  The fire shooting into the sky faded away as well, with no phoenix alive to keep it burning.
