"Nice place, right?" said an overenthusiastic realtor.

"It sure is!" replied Fane, but he was beginning to second guess himself. What he and the realtor were gawking over was a building Fane was looking to buy in Honsenka, and he was determined to not only live there but to start his tattoo shop as well. Unfortunately, the building was not as glamorous as the realtor claimed and Fane agreed. Its location was on the less desirable part of this oriental-style, exotic town, and it looked closer to an abandoned sweatshop than a sellable property. And as if to add sugar to the icing, it was smudged in between two large buildings owned by other privately owned businesses that were so enormous relative to his own that they cast shadows over his building entirely!

Well, we can't have it all, can we? Because the property was so unattractive and undesired by people who could afford anything else at all, it was so terribly cheap that even Fane—whose monetary wealth consisted only of jewels he's hoarded along the way to town—could afford it, and that was all he needed to get started.

After he bought it, what was any person's nightmare was now manageable considering Fane compensated for its ugly appearance with his own creativity. By the end of the week, he had transformed the dusty sweatshop into a colorful, vibrant tattoo joint. It was small, but with the donations from locals and his good eye for junk and even better knowledge on how to clean them, he had fully furnished the shop and decorated it with murals and paintings of his own ability. It was nothing to write home about, but if anyone had seen the before and after as Fane had, he was certain that he would have been praised! Well, he wasn't impressed with his work anyhow. He was more excited to get started with his true craft.

Sitting there on a stool was none other than Fane Howler—shirtless and plucking steamed edamame beans from a white ceramic bowl. Every part of his body except for his hands, feet, and head were covered in various tattoos. Not only that, he was a particularly built man with a refined, toned shape. His black hair was so incredibly long that he felt the tips of it kiss his ankles when he walked. In front of him was a large canvas, incompletely scribbled over with various red flowers. The most noticeable of them all was a bundle of large Haemanthus in the center, but they were otherwise known as Blood Lillies in Desierto. Fane carefully dipped his brush into his paints, letting the rough threads slide over the canvas with a look of captivation in his green eyes. It was as if he were lost in his own world.

Suddenly, he stopped, looking at the canvas with a sudden expression of dissatisfaction. He looked... frustrated. "Flowers die when they're not watered. What good are you on a canvas? You deserve something better."

Clementine made her way down an alleyway in Hosenka, walking confidently in the dark space. While others may have avoided alleyways for fear of who may be lurking, the young woman walked them as if she were on a sidewalk on a sunny day. She was more than capable of handling anyone who might stop her in the narrow walkway. Alleyways were where she grew up, naught but small paths among the jungle of a city that was Neutral Grounds.

Clem stepped out from the alley, looking to her left and then the right. Her destination was close by, just a few streets to go. She was on her way to a new tattoo shop that had opened up in Hosenka just days before. Clem had overheard someone in a nearby town discussing it, mentioning that the owner was a fantastic artist and an unusual person. They had spoken about his curiously long hair, but despite that, rained praise all over the tattoo they had received. A quick peek revealed to Clem a depiction on their arm of a majestic horse bursting out of a desert scene, its mane waving wildly. She had been thoroughly impressed by the work and decided to head to the place herself to speak to this tattoo artist.

...Which was proving difficult, as Clem couldn’t read. Thus, street signs were pointless and confusing. Even the limited amount she knew about navigating on her iLac couldn’t direct her exactly to where it was. Clem had been growing frustrated with getting lost. Every street looked the same and without understanding the signs, there wasn’t an easy way to distinguish between any of them. Then, she had noticed a stack of newspapers inside a nearby building. Little did she know that she was in front of the very business the paper was produced at. On the very front page was the picture of the same tattoo she had seen the day before of the horse. Though she couldn’t read the article, Clem noticed a little map on the bottom of the page. A red star sat in the middle and a little pin-shaped mark a few blocks away with a line between the two. It was a map with directions from the newspaper headquarters to the new tattoo shop!

Clem had followed the little map on the route through the streets of Hosenka, taking back alleys to shorten the walk. At last, she arrived in front of the little shop. It was wedged in between two tall buildings and looked quite out of place. The exterior had been fixed up a little but could obviously use some work.

Clem was still excited despite the appearance of the place. She had gotten a few tattoos throughout her life, but now it was time for another. From doing some jobs, she had saved up enough to get a decently sized tattoo. When pondering about the design, Clem had decided she needed to have a cover-up done of an old tattoo. However, she would have to see what the artist was willing to do.

The painter opened the door, which let out a pleasant little ding from the bell hanging over it. She stepped in and looked around. The place was fairly tidy, covered in various paintings and papers. Chairs rested against the wall for people to wait in. Behind a counter, sitting at a desk, was a person. His long hair fell all the way to the bottom of the stool he perched on, and Clem could see the faint lines of steam rising from over his shoulder. She wondered if he was perhaps smoking something, but then she saw him lift food up to his mouth.

The dark mage stepped further inside, taking a few more glances around. “Hello,” she called out to the man on the stool. “Are you Fane?”

Fane was lost in his own world of paints and pigments until the alarming chime of his little doorbell rang. At the sound, the frustrated, unsatisfied artist's expression snapped into something far more pleasant than before. It was as if the little ding of the doorbell relieved him of the painting's weight, allowing him to breath.

"I think so." Fane responded candidly. He didn't look at Clementine the instant she came in as most people would, but waited until he finished his final brushstroke to peek over his shoulder to lock his emerald eyes with her blue ones. His pleasant expression could be seen with absolute clarity now—and was smiling from ear to ear. "Sometimes I wonder if I am who I think I am." The first place his eyes floated when he saw her was the parts of her body where the skin was exposed. It darted from one place to the next, like a beast sizing up their prey. Except this was a subtle gesture, and maybe even harmless as he was only wondering where he'd like to put a tattoo. To him, she didn't look any older than twenty-one. Her skin was a delightful olive color, and the reddish-brown hair that ran down her shoulders complimented it well.

Fane returned from his musings in an instant, his mouth still softly grooved with a smile. "Oh wow," he said to Clementine, tossing an edamame bean into his mouth, "you're very pretty, miss. I bet you're here for a tattoo, right? Would you like some edamame?" Fane lifted the hidden ceramic bowl filled with edamame beans to show his pretty guest, chewing placidly on the one he plucked from it earlier.

It took a moment for the seated artist to physically acknowledge Clem. She heard him say that he thought he was Fane. His voice was muffled by the direction in which it was spoken, but still resounded clearly around the empty shop. Clem caught a flash of green as he turned to observe her over his shoulder. Those eyes were strikingly green, but a friendly face accompanied them.

When he spoke again, Clem furrowed her brow. Was he speaking in riddles now? That would make communication a lot harder. She could feel him searching her exposed skin with his gaze. It was likely he was looking for existing tattoos. Clem subconsciously crossed her arms over her chest, feeling oddly exposed.

“Yeah, that’s why I’m here,” Clem replied, ignoring his compliment. The words were surely meant to be kind, but she had learned to just overlook comments from strange men. “And I ain’t hungry,” she continued, looking skeptically at the steamed vegetable. She had absolutely no clue what edamame was, but if it was too complicated to pronounce then it surely wasn’t fit for eating. It probably had a taste as odd as the name.

“I’m in need of a cover up of an old tattoo,” Clem explained. Purple fabric rustled as she shimmied her coat off of her left shoulder. This left the entirety of her upper chest above the top edge of her strapless shirt exposed, including half of her Errings Rising guild tattoo. She turned slightly to show the back of her shoulder to Fane. Inked on the skin was a group of vibrant crystals fanned in a half circle. There was one for each major color of the rainbow.

This was the mark of the Chromas, an all-female gang that Clem had taken up residence with for a little over a year. Each color represented a member or former member of the gang. Back then, the painter had eagerly gotten the tattoo and felt proud of it. Now, she just wanted it gone.

As Clem thought about covering up the tattoo for good, her heart rate began to increase. For a moment she felt guilty. How could she just get rid of the mark of the people who helped her when she had nothing? The Chromas were once like family to her. The painter shook off the thoughts. This was for the best. The less connection she had to the group, the better. She wanted nothing more than to forget all the pain they had caused her.

After Fane got a good look at the tattoo, Clem turned back around. She was too lazy to pull her jacket back up, so the top just hung casually around her elbows. “Whaddaya think?” she asked mildly.

"Ah! A cover-up, you say?" said Fane, sounding chipper, "I can do that for you!" Fane set his bowl of edamame aside, turning around so he was facing his customer completely. While he gazed at her, he couldn't help but notice another marking on her upper-chest. Of course, Fane could only see half of it, and it wasn't the one the girl was wanting to cover up, but him being a tattoo artist, he couldn't be but be inquisitive of it.

The one that the girl wanted to be covered up was a far more colorful marking than the one he saw on her chest. They were fanning crystals that made up a semi-circle, each having a different color of the rainbow. It was a very delightful and juvenile design, but it was a tattoo's story that made them truly beautiful. Giving someone a tattoo was like writing words in their pages, their bodies were books, and his needles were the pens. Covering one up didn't mean a thing—some people were not satisfied with what their books wrote about after all, and people were indecisive till the very end. But it was all the same to Fane, who took pleasure in the process more than the emotional journey. As long as she wasn't attempting to remove those markings altogether, what was one or one-hundred cover-ups?

When the girl asked him what he thought, he wasn't sure what she was expecting him to say. His thoughts? Opinions? Whether or not it could be done? Uncertain, Fane just said whatever came to his airy mind. "It's a simple design and will be easy to cover-up. What do you have in mind for the new tattoo, beautiful?" he smiled sharply, staring at her body.

What a rigid girl, the artist thought to himself, though it was unclear whether he was talking about her physique or her personality, How charming!

Fane’s compliments had no effect on Clem. Experience had taught her to ignore such remarks as they served her no purpose. She wasn’t about to tell him off, though. One thing she had learned over time was to not piss off tattoo artists. They were drawing something permanent on her skin, so they deserved a level of respect she held for almost nobody else.

“I drew somethin’ up,” Clem explained excitedly. She reached into her bag, splattered with dried paint, and withdrew a sketchbook. The pages were a bit frayed at the edges from so much use. She flipped through the pages quickly, coming to rest on one in the middle of the stack. Turning it around, she proudly showed it to Fane. “This is what I wanna cover up the old one with!”

On the page was a long, vibrant Midian dragon. Its magenta body was coiled up and a toothy grin resided on its face. It was Clem’s own rendition of her pet dragon, Magenta. She felt his presence flicker at the edge of her consciousness and smiled ever so slightly. The dragon had come to life from one of her paintings long ago and was her dearest friend and confidant. The wise paint serpent had provided her companionship where the Chromas had failed her. It was only fitting that he would replace their mark on her skin.

“Thoughts?” she asked once more. He was a professional and she trusted his opinion. “Is there anything we should change?” The change in wording was subconscious. They were working together on this now, a team of paint and ink. Though Fane was odd, she felt herself drawn to him.
