    Details:

Mount Hakobe, as was expected, was living up to its unsavory reputation of being very inclement, with its unforgiving temperatures and rugged scape. Today, however, it had chosen to make itself even more unpleasant, with the screaming blizzard which seemed to have been created somewhere on the highest point of the mountain, and hurled down the steep slopes of the range by some vengeful god of frost, intent on bringing suffering to the world, or at least, those it could place its influence on. With the weather like this, only fools or unnatural folk would dare climb any higher.

Obviously, the woman who sat at a corner in a tavern located in one of the villages on the higher slopes of Mount Hakobe would easily fall into the 'unnatural folk' category. For all intents and purposes, she looked absolutely normal; the only relatively strange thing about her was the lock of white hair, with the rest of her hair being blonde. But she was young, and youths tended to do all sorts of things on whims of fancy, so her differing hues of hair color could easily be explained as some youthful vagary. However, on closer observation, it would be more evident that this person was probably more than she appeared to be. For starters, unlike most of the tavern patrons who stayed as close as they could to the fire roaring in the stone hearth, the young woman sat in a corner of the tavern, where it was empty and cold, her gaze staring out into space. Also, there were whispers that she had come in long after the storm had begun, and those who had seen her approach from the window though she may have come down the mountain. As a result, naturally, no one was eager to strike up a conversation with her. Also, despite the fact that her body was covered with a thick grey cloak, which was quite normal for the temperature level and weather, when she had ordered a drink for herself, which was the only interaction she had done so far, it had been noticed that when she put forth her hand to pay for the drink, her arm was bare. Even under traveling cloaks, people wore thick clothes in this kind of environment.

Beira, for her part, didn't mind. Not particularly one given to craving human company, she was most certainly not going to get over to the folks huddled by the fireside and immerse herself in conversation. She didn't have the social skills to do that. Besides, she increasingly felt that speaking to them was a waste of time. Thanks to her heightened senses, she could hear that the current discussion amidst the fire lovers was herself. And what these people were saying about her was rather hilarious, at least in her opinion, though her deadpan expression told not a soul that she was amused. One of the men seemed to be commenting that she was probably a snow witch, to which another answered that most supernatural creatures were not physically comely. Someone else, a woman, this time, refuted that hypothesis, to which another fellow attempted to lend credence, informing the group that any person unfortunate to talk to her would be invited by her to go out into the storm with her, and such a person would be compelled to obey. Of course, said unfortunate soul would never be heard of again. Unless, curiously, he had salt. If salt was thrown in the witch's face, she would vanish. One of the men, a cynical chap, noted that he just might try the endeavor, but as neither he nor his fellows had salt, and the barkeep was unwilling to share his, the project died before it could be hatched.

Beira allowed herself a giggle, and more than five heads swiveled her way, even though they didn't hear the sound. To what had the witch been laughing? The Utgardian paid them no heed though. Her attention had been drawn to another group of heavily clothed people, these ones more furtive than the villagers, and obviously strangers as well. They spoke in a tongue she couldn't understand, but Beira sensed something was not right about them. Whatever it was, though, she could not say.

The weather being rather unfavourable around Mount Hakobe was not a rare sight. Harsh environment and low temperatures were how things simply were, up on the mountain. The tattooed man was sitting in his mostly barren room in the grand castle that had been liberated for the Guild that became his home, for the time being. With his greater sense of hearing he noticed how the wind behind the walls picked up on its intensity, making him curious to see how badly the trees were bending. However, even with his superior sight, he could only barely make out silhouettes of the trees from his window. His view was obstructed by a heavy blizzard.

Seeing the blizzard behind the window spurred a bit of his muse, as well as some old memories. Memories of his time training in Iceberg, under Rhew's tutelage. Until he left without a trace and a curse that the man had foolishly asked for. With a little smile he put on his leather jacket onto his naked torso and take his cane, along with his Book of Poems that he hid in his jacket. His quiet steps led him out of the castle and into the blizzard, which most people would classify as potentially life threatening.

The wind was not the most pleasant for the tattooed man, but the icy bits that bounced off of his bare arms and got stuck in his black hair felt incredibly nostalgic. He kept to the path that led him down the mountain. Even if he was fine with cold and snow, the last thing he needed was to get lost. Then again, if the worst came to pass, he could always teleport himself to the Guild grounds, thanks to the mark that was pressed on his neck.

The blizzard was still intense when he entered the little village, the wind not letting up and intent on making the road for travelers that much more perilous. Seeing as he was not on any official Guild business, a regular tavern seemed like a fitting place to take temporary shelter from the unrelenting weather. He could observe the locals in peace, see if there was anything brewing and possibly nip it in its bud. That was the plan, anyway.

The tattooed man would push open the tavern's door, letting in a gust of cold air, disrupting the group that was huddled near a fireplace. They looked over to the newcomer who dared to let in the cold wind, their face expressions turning from general annoyance to mild shock. The man would close the door, as he overheard the group's whispers about his choice of clothing, quickly lumping him in with a... snow witch? The mage's sight swiftly scanned the room, finding an another person. Tucked away in the far corner, away from the warmth of the fire. Perhaps there was more to this person that first sight let on. As well as an another group that was in the tavern. The man could not understand their whispers, but he didn't pay them any mind. They were most likely just passing travelers, being forced to stop in this tiny village because of the vicious blizzard.

"Something to keep me company, if you would." The mage would run his free hand through his black hair to get rid of some of the snow and ice that got caught in it, as he placed his request. The man tending to the place was about to object, but upon noticing the Guild mark, he only grumbled under his breath as he got to work. In the meantime, the tattooed man would make his way towards the woman sitting in the corner. His cane quietly clicked as he walked, finally stopping near the person in question. "May I share a table with you?" He would ask, motioning towards the empty spaces with his unoccupied hand.

Beira's sixth sense could identify that the strange fellows in thick gear seemed to be arguing about something, although they kept their voices very low, and spoke in the incomprehensible language they had. From the ways their clothes moved, Beira was sure that they were armed. Robbers? That would be unlikely, seeing as there would be very little of interest for thieves to steal here, unless they wanted to raid the Errings Rising guild hall at the top of the mountain, a task which Beira, out of amusement, would not attempt to prevent them from doing, if indeed they were really so foolish. Yet, something at the back of her mind kept telling her that these people were here on a more ominous assignment. She decided to pay more attention to them, learn what she could abut them, in case they were potential enemies.

Underneath the thick fur cloaks they wore, they had on similar robes, which proved that they belonged to a single organization, and one with enough structure to afford them uniforms. Frame-wise, they were almost all moderate in size, because the one who wasn't was almost morbidly fat. They were all totally shorn, and Beira noted that out of the four of them, two were women. Since it wasn't Fiorean culture for women to scrape every single strand of hair off their heads (as a matter of fact, Beira was yet to come across any culture whose women shaved their heads as a rule), it was likely that their shaving, like the males with them, meant they belonged to some order. It was unlikely to be military; most martial orders did things that, even if symbolic, demonstrated some degree of things that pertained to prowess in combat. A low hair cut would be enough, not total head exfoliation. Besides, the obese woman, who seemed to be in charge, could not be a soldier, with her very unathletic frame. They then had to be a cult.

The sound of a cane tapping rhythmically against the floor, which Beira had heard but taken no notice of due to her interest in the potential cultists, had stopped, and rather close too. The young woman looked up at the man standing before her, her eyes widening slightly at the surprising figure he cut. "Please," she said in response to his request, "avail yourself of wherever you desire. The company is welcome." Her eyes roamed over his features, her expression not at all unappreciative, as she said in a slightly teasing tone, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth, "I used to think Fioreans consider it a lack of common sense to wear sandals in a blizzard." Of course, it was a lack of common sense as well to dress so scantily in such weather, but in that regard, Beira was probably less in the right than V was. At least she, like the average Utgardian, usually favored heavy boots, not sandals.

Despite being a relative newcomer to her guild, Beira, being the sort of curious person she was, had taken the pains to do what research she could on as many guild members that information was available on. Of course, given the nature of the guild, such information was dearly scant, but names and physical features were always available. But even with the wanting information, a dark-haired fellow with your guild insignia, covered in tattoos and yet still easy on the eyes, wasn't someone you'd expect to bump into every now and then while walking down the street. And yet, for the accuracy with which the man before her fit the descriptions of one of her fellow guild members, the only thing she knew about him was a name. "Would I thus be wrong in assuming I speak to the one called V?" the Utgardian maiden asked, as her azure eyes flicked from the stranger's green, to the guild insignia on his neck, and back to his eyes again. And while she wasn't looking at the strange fellows, she knew one of them had pointed in her general direction, even though the action was surreptitious.

The man's hearing let him overhear the various conversations that quietly filled the still air. He did not care for any of them, for some were about topics that did not concern him and the rest he couldn't understand. The sound of his voice brought the woman's gaze to him, who, surprisingly enough, did not deny his company. "Thank you." The man would thank and pull away a heavy wooden chair upon which he then sat down. He would prop his cane against the chair next to him as the woman commented on the choice of his wear and nationality. Most likely because of the vicious blizzard that still was raging on outside.

The tattooed man would give the woman a little smirk. "My choice of attire might be influenced by the fact I grew up in Iceberg." He would give his table companion a little hint, but it was not the whole story. It was simply the part that mattered in the situation. The mage would lean back in his chair, the wood lightly creaking due to its age. However, he did not expect the following question the woman posed for him.

She knew his name? Was he truly that infamous in Fiore already or was there something else at work? Her accent did not ring too familiar to his ears, thus V could not pinpoint the right guess. The man would slightly tilt his head, but the sound of the wood creaking interrupted his own question. It was the man who was tending to the bar he commanded earlier. He silently placed a tankard on the table, in front of the tattooed mage. He didn't spare a single glimpse and just as fast he appeared, he took his leave. The mage did not bother thanking, for the man was already gone, in his eyes.

There was a bit more chatter among the folk gathered around the warm flames, but nothing that truly tugged on V's strings of interest. Those were tugged by the woman sitting at the table he decided to join. "Indeed. I am the one who calls himself V. Who do I have the pleasure of meeting?" He would confirm his indentity to the blonde woman, as he placed a question of his own and took a sip of the golden liquid in the tankard. She was a mage, but was there something else that he was missing?

A Song of Utgardr Empty Re: A Song of Utgardr

Post by Fraag 25th October 2019, 9:39 am

It was interesting to see that, like herself, V had been raised in a land of ice and snow, and perhaps little else. Beira hadn't necessarily been to Iceberg, but she had read what she could about the place. Most enchanting was the story she had read about the King on the Frozen Throne, and how it seemed he never died. Who knew, maybe one day, Beira would travel to Iceberg and see if the stories were true. Yet she was no fool; her eventual foray into that land would probably be just to ascertain the veracity of the stories, not attempt to change anything about them. For someone, or something, to have survived for so long (if not the king, at least the crown; Beira had also heard stories that anyone who went on a quest to kill the king would end up replacing him and sitting on his throne), whatever powers kept such a one on the throne were nothing to be trifled with.

Beira noted, with some level of mixed feelings, the behavior of the bartender as he came up, dropped V's drink as hastily as he could afford, and fled back to the safety of the area about the fire. It was expected; the man was definitely scared of V, probably for the same reason Beira had easily identified him: his guild symbol. Errings Rising was certainly not a guild to go to for group hugs and rainbows and unicorns, and yet, against the popular consensus, not everyone was in a dark guild because they wanted to watch the world burn, and rub their hands, cackling in insane glee as the light of the world-fire illuminated their demonic expressions of mirth. While she preferred being admired than feared, Beira had joined the dark guild, because in her desire to protect what she could of her new home, she had discovered that, unlike in Utgardr, what could be perceived as good or evil in Earthland was not so clear-cut. She sighed, unaware of the audibility of her expression, and shook her head.

Her guild mate had just then, as was expected, asked with whom he was sharing a table. "I am Beira the Third of Utgardr," the God Slayer replied, a hint of pride evident in her voice, "and currently a mage of Errings Rising, which is why I believe I know at least your name. It is... reasonable, in my opinion, to know a bit about everyone with whom you throw in your lot. And you, in particular, are rather..." she paused, choosing her words, as what was in mind was an Utgardian phrase, and she wasn't sure V would understand it, "...for lack of a better word, set apart from the general human. In a very good way, of course." She hoped she wasn't making a fool of herself.

The cloaked strangers seemed to be chanting together, as though going through some mystic rite. They had formed a tight circle where they sat on the floor, with joined hands and were repeating strange lines over and over. In the center of the circle sat the one who seemed to be their leader, reading silently from an ancient-looking book. Something about it all made Beira quite uncomfortable, but it was better for her to mind her business. "So, what brings you to this most delectable place?" she asked V, taking her attention off the chanting group. The locals appeared downright uncomfortable, and were gesturing to the strange ones with suspicious and uncomfortable expressions.

Then the leader of the chanters lifted his hand; clenched in his fist was a beautiful, expensive-looking bracelet. Beira, who was facing the direction in which the strangers sat, saw the item and frowned. It looked familiar. Then realization struck like a sudden thunderbolt. "By Naglfar's cursed sails!" the young woman exclaimed suddenly but quietly, as she realized what it was: a royal Utgardian trinket. Then her face flushed, and she turned to V apologetically. "Please excuse my horrible manners," Beira said quietly, "but something wrong is afoot. I may be wrong, but I think one of those fellows has something that should be in my possession. And I sense a strong foreshadowing of doom, though I cannot say what it is."

The woman sitting near him sighed as V took a sip of the liquid that had been brought for him. She then introduced herself proudly, her name resonating with a hint of royalty. Royalty that V could care less about. He was a little bit surprised to hear that Beira, too, was a mage of Errings Rising, but it was to be expected. The tattooed man usually only ventured out to gather muse or undertake Guild business. Otherwise he had the castle servants bring him any necessities that he needed. Especially after the foray to that cursed island with Kuro. His arm needed quite a bit of healing afterwards.

Beira also noted that it seemed reasonable to know about the other members of the Guild, which was indeed a reasonable thought. But V was not a member out of compassion or because he felt like the ideology behind the formation of such a Guild appealed to him. In a sense it did, but he had different motives. When the woman mentioned his eccentricity, he would smirk. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Beira." V would go over the pleasantry. "Indeed, I get told that a fair bit. Mostly because of my love for poetry." He would agree with Beira in a way, knowing that usually people gave him looks, whenever he recited verses out loud. Though he omitted his thoughts about the knowledge of one's Guild. That part was not necessary for her to know.

The tattooed man's superior hearing picked up on a strange sound. Sound that reminded him of ritualistic chanting one could witness when a mage in Bellum was performing a summoning rite. It brought back some of those cursed memories of jealousy and envy. The voices were somewhat unnerving, but he had no proof that the group of mysterious people sitting behind him were performing something ill. The blonde woman inquired about the reason behind V's visit. "I thought I could gather some muse in this lovely weather." The tattooed man would reply, no hint of sarcasm in his voice. He truly meant what he had said.

The man took an another sip of the golden liquid, when Beira suddenly quietly exclaimed, earning a confused slight tilt of V's head. He didn't see it as crude language, as the woman apparently did, but it seemed that she spotted something of importance to her with what he imagined were the chanting cultists. He was sure that he heard a tale of a woman going after an item that belonged to them, before. "If it is truly yours, I believe you are going to procure the item in question, yes?" V would ask in hushed voice, ensuring that the group would not hear him. Not that they would hear him over their chanting, either way. Beira also said that she felt an unknown form of doom approaching. Perhaps things would go further than just attempting to collect inspiration. "And I imagine that the procurement will not go as smoothly and easily as one would wish." He would add with a smirk written on his face, anticipating commotion to happen any moment. V's arm could use more time to recover, but he was prepared to spring into action. Very gingerly.

"Oh, I most certainly am going to procure the item in question, and if possible find out just whence it was acquired," the Utgardian replied, rising to her feet. "And no, the procurement will most certainly not go smoothly as I wish, though I am more inclined to hope it goes easier than more smoothly. Excuse me for a moment, V." Having spoken thus, Beira began walking towards where the apparent cultist were chanting in their strange tongue. The leader of the cultists looked up from the book he was holding, and their eyes met. A crazed grin appeared on his face, and he dropped the items in his hands and drew a dagger out of his belt. The cultists continued chanting, even when he grabbed one of them by the hair, and ran his dagger across the chanting mans throat. The dying man fell to the floor, and his lips continued to move, even as he attempted to chant with whatever remnant of life he had left.

Things quickly took on a very strange turn. The blood from the slain man began running in invisible grooves, making odd patterns and symbols. Very soon, what appeared to be a large circle was formed, designed by the blood of the man who had been killed. Of course, the locals in the inn were most certainly not pleased with the current arrangements, and were in an agitated frame of mind. Yet none of them dared to move near the circle, in which the cultists were still chanting. The leader of the cultists was still looking at her, the mad grin on his face. Beira, slightly unsettled by his stare, attempted to cross into the circle and accost the man, but some invisible wall of force seemed to be preventing her from getting close. The sensation that something wrong was going to happen continued to rise, and soon everyone in the inn that didn't have a strong mind was beginning to go mad with terror. As the terror reached its climax and the locals were mindlessly making themselves scarce, Beira, suspecting that the blood circle was responsible for the invisible wall that kept her from the cultists, decided to break the circle to get to them.

    "Precept 40: Ruptura!"

As the Utgardian slammed her open palm on the ground, a shockwave tore through the building, blasting the wooden floor into smithereens. The impact of the shockwave sent the cultists flying, scattering them about on the pieces of the floor. As Beira approached the cultist leader, he laughed and said to her, "it's too late. We have summoned the Abomination of the Deep. It is coming. It us--" His words stopped with a strangled gasp, as a black tentacle projected through his chest. The cultist coughed up copious amounts of blood, laughing all the time till he died. At this point, it would be noted that a huge black circle existed where the circle of blood would have been, had the floor been intact. The black circle seemed ethereal, as it did not interact with its surroundings, and it seemed like some strange portal leading to an unknown dimension. A lone black tentacle still protruded from it, the lifeless body of the cult leader attached to it. Then the tentacle receded into the portal, taking the body with it.

Shortly after, there was a strange eerie cry, which seemed to emanate from nowhere and everywhere at once. Then from the round black portal rose a creature of immense size and ugliness, its fish-like head gaping at everyone before it with dead eyes, while its needle-like teeth clicked and clacked. About ten feet in height, it had to hunch, as the roof was too low for it to stand upright. Then it flexed itself into an upright position suddenly, blasting off the entire roof of the inn. The screaming icy winds lent a preternatural atmosphere to the whole scenario, and the beast lifted its head and howled at the wind, lending its voice to the cacophony. Then the tentacles on its back suddenly sprang to life, stabbing at everyone around. The remaining cultists were instantly slaughtered, but Beira, being quick on her feet, managed to dodge the appendage aimed at her, swinging a table into another tentacle which was rushing towards her guild mate, deflecting it.

"I certainly don't suppose it wants to chat." Of course, that was obvious, but still.

Beira seemed to prefer the option of a smoother acquiring of what could possibly be her item. The woman excused herself and stood up. V wasn't sure what she had on her mind, but he only followed the woman with his gaze. She walked towards the cultists who were still chanting. However, one of them looked up, but Beira then obstructed V's view of him, thus he couldn't see what was happening between them. On the other hand, the cultist that took notice of Beira seemed to have grabbed a cultist chanting next to them. Before V knew it, a dagger appeared in a flash, slitting the seized cultist's throat.

The tattooed man frowned, as he stood up, slightly alarmed. The locals seemed to be less than pleased, as blood began to form a circle around the gathering of the cultists, who kept on chanting through all of that. V sighed, as he reached out for his cane, only to see Beira attempt to approach the cloaked group. She was stopped in her tracks, but V didn't notice anything in the way. The man's gaze then slid down to the fully formed blood circle. Most likely the magic that was responsible for the protective wall. However, as the cultists continued to chant, a strange feeling of dread moved along V's spine. Perhaps it was the feeling of incoming doom that his Guildmate had mentioned before. Soon enough, the locals started to tremble in fear and then started to scream in absolute terror, as they ran around. V would wince at the screams and gather some of his energy. With a snap of his fingers he was covered by a protective layer of ice. A pre-emptive measure that V thought would come in handy really soon.

The inn patrons ran out of the building in screams and Beira yelled something. V was placing his cane on the floor, as the woman slammed her palm onto the floor. The wooden boards broke into pieces and the shockwave sent most of the cultists flying. V would shield his face with his free arm, as he was knocked back into his empty chair. He lost his footing a little, but managed to recover. Thankfully, the ice that covered his body absorbed the damage. However, the man, who was most likely the leader of the whole outfit of the cultists let out a mad laugh as he exclaimed that they had already summoned something he called the Abomination of the Deep. He wasn't allowed to finish his sentence, though, as a black tentacle pierced through his chest. Blood gushed out of his mouth and he just kept on laughing. A disturbing image that V would have to transform into a poem once he had some time to himself.

The tattooed man started to walk forward through the ruins of the floor, as he noticed that there was no more blood circle. Instead, it seemed to have transformed into a strange circle of pure blackness, from where the tentacle had appeared. The said tentacle was still present, along with the body of the cultist it had killed hanging on it. With a quick swoosh it disappeared into the darkness and the lifeless body flew with it.

After a few moments the strangest cry that V had ever heard echoed through the area, making V wince at the sensation. Then the creature pulled itself out of the black portal. It was rather sizeable, with a fish-like head and with prominent sharp teeth that filled its maw. The being eyed the two mages with its dead eyes. It was big enough to have to be hunched to fit into the room, but it didn't last long. Within a moment it straightened itself, breaking apart the inn's roof. The cold winter blizzard now had full reign over the inn. V's black hair was ruffled by the winds as the so-called Abomination of the Deep howled into the wind.

The tentacles quickly got to work, eliminating the cultists who haven't died by that point with swiftness rarely seen. There was one tentacle aimed at him as well, but Beira proved to be quite fast on her feet, as she dodged an attack aimed at herself and shoved a lonesome table at the tentacle that had it out for V. The woman noted that the creature most likely didn't to chat and the tattooed man was inclined to agree. "It is time to speak with actions, instead, then." The man would reply, as he gathered ice energy in his body. He would conjure an extremely sharp piece of ice. With a snap of his fingers it flung itself forward, aiming at one of the appendages. The edge of the ice cut through the tentacle, nearly severing it. Blood-like substance flowed from the large cut. The Abomination let out an another loud cry, as its attention focused on the two mages. "Let us take care of this mess, shall we?"

"Works for me," Beira responded to V's statement about the two mages speaking with their actions. "I just hope this 'argument' doesn't take so much time." So saying, the God Slayer prepared herself for battle, even as she watched her fellow guild member slice into one of the monster's tentacles with a razor-sharp shard of ice. That would explain why, just like herself, V didn't seem to have an issue with the frigid weather, something that was naturally strange as far as normal humans were concerned. Because V was an ice mage, similar to Beira. And yet, with the tattooed man's use of ice, the blonde God Slayer could determine that there was more than just ice in the launched shard that mangled the tentacle it had been targeted at. Perhaps it was a hybrid of ice and something else. Maybe Beira would find out later. For now, there was some cleaning up to do.

"You use ice. Cute," the Utgardian quipped, as she held her hands together, a rather large sword made of nether rime forming in her hands, the blade of which was almost as long as she was tall. With a dash, she covered the distance between herself and the abomination, and, evading a number of tentacles, smashed her bladed weapon into its knee. The blade did not go in as deeply as she would have liked, but it made the creature buckle and bow itself. In a fluid motion, Beira swung her blade upwards, slicing the creature's head and using the momentum of the upward swing to jump into the air, flipping gracefully over the bowed creature and landing behind it, striking it again, this time with a downward slash, as she descended.

The creature, however, seemed to be made of much sterner stuff than Beira had expected. As though she had not even injured it, with an almost nonchalant swing of its long arm, the abomination swung out at the Utgardian girl, catching her with a backhanded strike that sent her sailing through the air. She crashed into the snow but was on her feet in a flash, readying herself for the next onslaught. The monster aimed two tentacles at her, which she managed to dodge, but was sent airborne again when the abomination kicked her sword, which had been interposed to defend against a kick aimed at her midsection, the force of the kick shattering the ice sword. Before she could hit the ground though, a tentacle whipped out and wrapped itself round Beira's left leg, suspending her in the air as the creature rose to its full height once again, dangling the mage before it.

As the creature's tentacle lifted Beira to face-level, other slimy appendages attempted to secure her arms and the rest of her body, to prevent her from struggling to free herself, while the strange creature opened its ugly jaws, a black liquid dripping from its needle-like teeth. "Oh no you don't!" the girl yelled, swiftly creating a spear of nether rime, which she promptly flung into the creature's open mouth. There was another otherworldly shriek, as the creature dropped Beira to wrestle with the shaft of the ice lance protruding from its mouth. That would give the Utgardian girl some very short, but much needed, moments of respite, as well as allow the creature to be off its guard, in case Beira's tattooed companion was interested in executing any follow-up attacks against it. Having been freed from the creature, Beira, yet upside down, made a feline maneuver in the air and dropped to the ground in a crouch, landing on her hands and feet as she caught her breath.

V was very glad to see that Beira was on board with getting rid of the otherworldly abomination. After the tattooed man showed his magic, the woman commented on it, making V smirk a little. Ice was indeed his element of... little choice, if he were to reflect on his past. The woman's fighting style included ice aswell, which revealed as to why she commented on V's usage of it. The smirk on his face only deepened. He took a few steps backwards, to maintain his distance he sorely needed.

Beira shaped the ice into a large blade and fought with a style that made V miss the days of old. Days when he could move freely without pain and fear of possibly messing up his joints or bones and fighting was a breeze. His fighting style was limitless, the only constriction being his own imagination. With the price he so foolishly paid, however, this wonderful limitlessness was broken, leaving him with only fragments of what he used to have.

The strength with which Beira made the summoned abomination kneel was to be envied. The man leaned against his cane, as the creature's tentacles sprung to life again, hitting Beira. he woman was not easily put down, however, as she quickly recovered and continued her assault. The creature sent two of its tentacles after its attacker, but the woman dodged them. However, she happened to be on the receiving end of a kick that broke her sword of ice. As she was flying backwards from the force of the kick, one of the tentacles reached out and grabbed her.

The nearly severed tentacle and an another one suddenly aimed at the tattooed man, who was attempting to keep a low profile. He conjured a blade of ice just to the side of him and jumped onto it. V dashed upon the blade to the side, dodging the attack of the tentacles, while shoving a few leftover chairs aside. The tentacles retracted as the creature stood up and got stabbed by Beira's icy spear. The tentacle let go of the woman, as the abomination attempted to get the piece of ice out of its disgusting maw.

The abomination was preoccupied, making it the prime time to attack. V would concentrate his energy and conjure four icicles behind his head. The would snap his fingers and the ice would fling themselves into the abomination. One of the icicles hit the already nearly severed tentacle, finishing the job. The rest of them jammed themselves into the creature, making it howl in pain. V was sure that the abomination would want to retaliate, so he conjured two icy doppelgangers. "Distract it." The tattooed man would command his clones, who ran off towards the creature's backside.

One tentacle swung at one of the clones, shattering it as the summoned abomination pulled out the spear of ice and crushed it. It howled, yet again, as the wind picked up, bringing in more snow from the blizzard. The creature seemed to be fully ready to retaliate and the tattooed man gathered and released a wave of a chilling aura around himself, aiming to making the creature more vulnerable, while stripping it of its magical strength, if it had any.

Beira was delighted to see that not only was V quite skilled in his use of ice, he was also able to effortlessly synchronize his attacks so that they flowed seamlessly with those of his guild mate, taking advantage of distractions and attack windows to inflict his own punishing barrages on the monster. Initially, with his having to lean on a cane, the Utgardian had been partially worried that V might have issues carrying his own weight, a concern that was totally unfounded. For starters, if V had attained considerable rank in a dark guild, which would be evidently less forgiving than a legal guild, as far as the attainment of strength was concerned, it simply stood to reason that he didn't attain his current power by writing poems.

"Note to self, never judge a book by its cover," Beira mused silently, preparing herself for another attack, as she perceived, rather than saw, V's chilling aura which proceeded to debilitate the Abomination of the Deep, weakening the aberration. With its defenses reduced, there was no better time to strike. The abomination had now turned all its sights on V, eager to destroy him if it could, most likely because it sensed that the effect of the chilly draining of power would be staved by his destruction, seeing as he seemed to have been the one responsible for it. And while it was trying to take V out, she would make an attack of her own, hopefully the last to be made against it.

Taking a running start, the God Slayer leaped into the air, forming a large spinning conical corkscrew of nether rime over her right hand, which she thrust at the creature's back, punching through every tentacle in the way. With an earsplitting scream, the abomination fell once more to its knees, as the Winter God Horn drilled through its back, its tip eventually protruding out of the creature's chest, as Beira got spattered by the creature's strange blood. Beira could tell she had inflicted a mortal wound on the monster, because it seemed to be losing its coordination, as evidenced by its wild flailing about as opposed to executing a counter strike. And yet, the thing was not dead. The Winter God Horn dissipated, and in its place formed a slim sword, the handle of which Beira gripped, as she plunged the weapon downwards into the creature's body repeatedly, getting stopped by the creature's strange, thick flesh. The third time, her blade passed clean through the back of the creature's head, exiting from its open mouth. It made a rattling sound, then dissipated into dark mists which eventually disappeared. Soon, nothing was left to show that it existed, not even its blood. Only the damage done to the environment was there.

"Oh joy! At least, I don't have to take a bath," the Utgardian stated, as she checked herself, surprised at how the creature's blood that had spattered over her was gone. She looked about for a moment, eventually finding what she had been looking for. "There you are!" the young woman exclaimed, snatching the ancient bracelet up from the snow, the one the cultist leader had been holding before he was slaughtered by the abomination. "What I wonder now is, how did those guys get their hands on this item?" The blizzard had died down now, and all seemed peaceful and quiet. Even though there was snow all over the place, anyone with the heightened senses of a Slayer would smell human blood under the snow, forming a trail that led away from the site of the battle. It was very likely that the cultists that hadn't been killed by the abomination had fled, but one or more of them had been injured. The tracks would lead to a hidden, snow-clad cave twisting down and deep into the mountain.

The act of creating an aura with debilitating properties seemed to have dragged attention to V, despite him wanting to keep low profile. The man was ready to dodge, though he wasn't sure how effective a dodge would be in his broken body, against an attack from a behemoth that stood before him. The creature lugged its way towards the tattooed man, ignoring his clone and the woman, but it didn't get far.

One of those, whom it ignored, made sure that it was stopped, before it could even think of doing something to the man. The abomination slumped to its knees once again with an incredibly loud screech, making V flinch and then wince at the intensity of the sound. Then, a horn of ice suddenly appeared from its chest, piercing its body. Strange blood splattered all over, some droplets making their way onto V's hair and hands aswell. The man grumbled, but he reckoned that his looks were the least of his problems in the given situation.

After that, V could hear flesh being torn apart. It was a sound which he could only attribute to Beira as its creator. The summoned creature was almost dead. The tentacles that were attached to its body were flailing around, but they were trying to reach behind it, rather than being fixated on the tattooed man as their primary target. A sword of ice protruded from its jaw, a final nail in its proverbial coffin. The abomination let out its last strange sound, before dissipating into a black mist. The mist itself then disappeared, along with everything else that belonged to the summoned creature was gone. Including its fluids, much to V's surprise. Beira seemed to have the same sentiment, though V would still opt for a shower, regardless.

The tattooed man clutched his cane and stood up with its support. All that was left was a destroyed establishment and a quieter blizzard. The woman took a look around and promptly found what she was looking for. Beira pondered about how the cultists could have gotten their hands on the item that belonged to her. However, something bothered V. In the air he could smell a faint trail of blood that led out of the inn. It could be only possibly linked to the cultists. The only one V had truly seen be killed, was their leader. "I know not how the group came upon your item, Beira." The tatooed man offered his lackluster answer.

There was something bothering him, though. Whatever happened to those screaming people who fled the scene? "Say, what do you reckon happened to those who ran away in fear?" He asked, the case of the missing cultists still weighing on his mind. "Then again, perhaps they aren't exactly the most important in this tale." The man would close his eyes in thought. "Would you be up for a cultist chase, instead?" V would correct his question. The appearance of that group of robed people was too strange not to follow further.

Beira gave V a sidelong glance, an eyebrow raised with a half quizzical, half amused expression on her face as a response to his deadpan answer to her rhetoric question as to how the cultists had managed to lay hands on the bracelet she had now recovered. A few words later, and her tattooed companion issued a question of his own. Beira nodded as she studied the bracelet momentarily before wearing it. "Well, my curiosity has been piqued particularly, and I suspect it's cultist hunting season this time of the year, so let's be off."

Having said so, Beira began following the faint smell of blood with her nose, her Slayer senses accurately directing her to follow the apparently invisible trail of blood. All the same, she was sure to walk slowly enough so as not to give V any problems following her. Soon, the terrain began sloping gently downwards, and at the bottom of the slope was a cave entrance almost hidden in the snow. The smell of blood was stronger now. Beira carefully let herself into the cave, whose floor quickly changed from the slightly treacherous icy film to solid, rough rock. The cave seemed almost serpentine in design, consisting of sudden and sharp twists and turns, making it extremely difficult to see what was ahead of one for up to ten feet. The flip side was, it was easier to hide and remain unnoticed, if a reason for secrecy presented itself.

Eventually, the smell of blood became rather strong; even someone without Slayer senses, and a poor olfactory sense, would easily be able to pick up the smell. Round the next bend, the reason for the strong smell became evident. In a wider area of the cave, there were signs of an obvious battle, and about a dozen corpses lay strewn about, all killed violently. What was of note was the fact that the corpses were dressed in either black and red robes, or dark purple and blue. Beira realized that the cultists in the inn had been wearing dark purple and blue, and most of the corpses were clad in the same color. "By the heavens, we seem to have stumbled in on a war or something. Looks like this is bigger than I expected," the Utgardian whispered, making sure there was nobody around at the scene of carnage, except them.

Having verified that the two were alone, Beira crept across the wide space to where the tunnel ran further down into the bowels of the earth. It was certain that some survivors of the battle had moved further down the tunnel, and Beira needed to know what they were up to. Not too much farther from the scene of carnage, and it became clear that voices were wafting from deep within the tunnel. A woman's voice, cold and in a strange accent, seemed to be dictating orders. Creeping up closer, Beira discovered that luck was on her and V's side. The tunnel sloped down gently to another widening, and there were ledges accessible to the upper part of the tunnel which provided a good hiding spot from which to observe the space below, a boon Beira quickly took advantage of. In the space stood a tall woman, but her ears were pointed, her hair was snow white, and her skin was obsidian-black. She held a dagger in her hand, and stood before a man garbed in purple and blue, held down on his knees by others in black and red.

For a short while, there was some exchange between the captive and the dark elven woman, then the man yelled something about praise to some strangely named deity, Uaggool, to which the dark elf responded by thrusting her dagger into his face. The woman squatted to clean her dagger on the robes of the corpse, then gave commands to her followers to dispose of the body. Then slowly she rose, turning her gaze to where the mages were hidden, as she locked eyes with the God Slayer. "I thought I sensed the presence of a foul mindflayer," said the elven woman, hatred in her eyes. "Kill them both." As the black and red robed cultists began drawing weapons and heading towards the two mages, Beira decided fighting in cramped spaces would not be safe. She leaped off the ledge and landed in the clearing, unarmed.

"Might I suggest we be reasonable, please?" the Utgardian maiden asked, just before a cultist charged her with a dagger. In a fluid stroke, she disarmed him and ran him through with his own weapon. "I thought not. Next is an episode of mindless violence."

V gave his guildmate a choice and she chose to hunt down the wounded cultists. A good choice, if he had to say himself. As much as it would be interesting to see if the terror of the people who fled the scene had disappeared with the death of the abomination that caused it, a good old fashioned chase intrigued him just a little bit more. Besides, the whole situation of the summoning was truly something to behold, if not somewhat reminiscent of the time he used to look out of the window of his room in Bellum and wish he could be one of those mages out in the courtyard, practising magic arts.

Still, those memories were only just faded fragments and it was best that the man kept up with Beira, rather than wallowing in his past. V followed the woman, a faint scent of blood hanging in the air providing them with direction. Beira wasn't in a rush, most likely to accommodate for V's physical impairment, though he didn't feel it was necessary. He did appreciate the gesture, however. Soon enough they came across an almost perfectly hidden cave. The smell of blood was becoming stronger, concentrating around the cave's entrance, making it obvious as to where the fleeing cultists took refuge. The tattooed man gingerly made his way down the slope and entered the cave, along with Beira.

What V thought would be a simple cave, turned out to be an elaborate cave system of tunnels that snaked through the mountain in sharp twists and turns. With each passing step the smell of blood was becoming ever stronger. There was no way that such intensity of the smell would be caused by a handful of minor injuries. And soon enough that way of V's thinking was proven to be correct. The two mages entered a larger room with a number of corpses laying about. They were clad in robes, though with two different colour sets. One being black and red, the other being dark purple and blue. There were also signs of struggles, hinting that a fight must have taken place. The woman whispered something about the possibility of them stumbling upon a cult war, but V kept his thoughts to himself. He didn't know whether it was a war or just a great disparity between different opinions or something else.

Beira carefully made her way through the room and the tattooed man followed her, doing his best to stay as quiet as he could, to the point he lifted up his cane so that it wouldn't click along the way. However, as a result, V kept close to the side of the tunnel that led them further in. Beside the overwhelming smell of blood, voices could be heard echoing through the air. The tunnel led to an another larger opening, though there were ledges on the upper part of the tunnel. The woman quickly made use of them, V quietly keeping up with her.

They witnessed a bloody interaction between the two cultist groups with the black and red robed ones being stronger in numbers. V assumed that the dark-skinned elven woman who ended the cultist in dark purple robe was their leader. The tattooed man was still not sure as to what was happening, but once the fresh corpse was ordered to be disposed of, the woman turned towards the hiding place of the two mages. The woman was fixated on Beira, before she ordered their death. V's guildmate jumped down, attempting a more diplomatic approach. The tattooed man stayed put as Beira got rid of the first assailant.

V didn't feel comfortable jumping down. He was afraid that his bones would give out and he would not be able to walk out of the cave on his own. Thus he resorted to the thing he could do the best with his strange condition. The man gathered ice energy in his body and with a snap of his fingers he let it out, in an aura that would chill the cultists to their bones, lowering their magical resistance and strength. From his vantage point V noticed two more entrances in the room, besides the one through which he and Beira entered. He didn't know if there was a larger group of cultists stashed away in a different part of the cave system, but he would take a bit of a precaution. With an another energy gathering and finger snapping he conjured a wall of ice that he shaped in a way it blocked one of the other entrances. The mages still had an escape route ready with the first entrance, should they need it. V would quickly conjure a sharp shard of ice, that he then launched onto one of the cultists who were down in the room. He robed person didn't seem to be completely aware of their surroundings, as the piece of ice pierced through their shoulder, opening a large wound that promptly started to bleed. They shrieked in pain and fell to their knees. "Get the one up there!" They yelled, some of the attention shifting from Beira to V. The man frowned. Perhaps he should've just skewered the cultist with a barrage of icicles.

A Song of Utgardr Empty Re: A Song of Utgardr

Another cultist attacked the Utgardian, who easily dispatched him as easily as the first. She noticed that her partner was not being idle, as he had used ice to block one of the passages leading out of the cave room, in order to most definitely prevent any further interruptions by cultists. An injured cultist had taken note of V, and was squealing that he be attacked. Beira decided to go on the offensive at that point, picking a cultist's weapon and plowing into the black-and-red garbed people to dissuade them from bothering with the other ice user on the ledge. The dark elf pointed at Beira and muttered some words, as some strange black energy formed at her fingertips. Then the dark energy was launched at the blonde mage at surprising speed. Fortunately for Beira, she was faster. Dodging the energy pulse, she noted that a cultist behind her was hit by the projectile meant for her. The person slumped to the floor immediately and was still. There was no time to discover whether the fallen cultist was alive or not; the elven priestess was probably the most dangerous person in the room. Dashing towards the elf, Beira was already preparing for an attack, when her sixth sense informed her of something behind her, being aimed at her, just as the elf made a hand gesture. She darted to the left, just as an airborne sword sailed through the air, where she had been just a second ago. Without her body to be struck by the blade, the flying sword skewered the elf, who quickly bled out.

The problem of the cultists having been solved, Beira studied the fallen bodies. "This was not particularly enlightening at all..." she said with distaste, then paused. "Wait-- someone here is still alive." She walked over to a body lying on the ground and kicked it gently with her foot. There was no response. She squatted beside the body and turned it over, only to evade an upward knife swing. "Thought as much," the God Slayer muttered, placing a hand on the ground and using it to brace her body as she slammed her foot into her unexpected opponent with an acrobatic kick. He tumbled away as Beira charged after him and grabbed at his head, pinning him to the rock wall of the cave.

    "Precept 84: Contacta Vetitae!"

The man's shaved head caught a plume of spectral flame, and he pulled free from Beira's grasp and staggered away, panting heavily, knife held at the ready. Beira watched him for a bit, her expression one of mild surprise and disdain. "Is joining esoteric cults now one of the prerequisites for becoming an agent of the Magic Council?" The man scoffed. "My presence here is none of your business. That being said, it is not very wise for dark mages to interfere in Magic Council business, but I'm curious about something. What are dark mages doing meddling in cult affairs?" He had definitely assumed that the mages were from a dark guild, thanks to Beira's guild mark. Good for him.

"If your presence here isn't any of our businesses, our presence here isn't any f yours," Beira replied coolly. But as she spoke to the man, she sensed something was off. It seemed some invisible force was trying to dull her senses, including her six th sense. V would probbly feel it too, like some unseen will was trying to obscure his mind. Then suddenly, out of the shadows, shadows that Beira suddenly realized were not supposed to be there, two individuals garbed in dark blue and purple, and two others in red and black lunged at her, attempting to restrain her. She noticed that three others were going for V; they probably thought he was the weaker and less dangerous of the two, since he had chosen to stay up on his ledge, a mistake Beira was sure they would come to regret. In any case, she had her own problems to deal with.

The girl pulled away from one of her charging assailants, smashing her elbow into the face of another who dropped immediately. A quick knee to the gut took another cultist out, before the remaining two attempted to crowd her. As she atempted to deal with the pair, a long thin knife skewered one of them from behind, and would have done the same to her, had she stayed unmoving. Instead, her twisting to the right gave her a cut in the side, but at least it wasn't too deep. The other cultist looked shocked, before Beira backhanded her in the side of the head, taking her out. "You're fast," the bald man said, drawing the blade of the long knife out of the back of the cultist he had skewered in an attempt to attack Beira. She frowned.

"Aren't these your subordinates? While you spoke with me, you were stalling, trying to keep me distracted for when they would attack, which means they are in league with you. Then why would you sacrifice one of them just because you wanted to get me?" The Magic Council infiltrator shrugged. "They are irrelevant. As long as the job gets done, and fortunately, I think the job got done." Beira gasped. "Poison!" The infiltrator laughed. "I find it amusing that you would be outraged that I would kill one of my grunts to achieve my goal, you who belong to a guild known for its mindless acts of wanton violence. And yet, you're trying to judge me. Never hoped I'd live out the day when moral standards among you dark mage trash would be exercised."

"Don't lose your hope so fast," Beira growled, "the day isn't over yet." She could feel her senses getting dull; it was most likely the effect of the poison. But she was fortunate because since the poisoned blade had passed through someone before cutting her, much of the poison had been spent on the stabbed one. She could still move, though, and that was an advantage. As the man sprang at her with his knife, Beira used her Winter God Dominance to defend herself. The knife glanced harmlessly off her wispy body shield, just before she switched the Winter God Dominance to her Winter God Curse, punching the man with as much strength as she could muster, and freezing him in the process. She drew back her hand and swung another blow, taking his head off as it exploded into bits of ice and frozen tissue.

Her breath was ragged, but Beira was sure her body would eventually wear out the poison. "I guess we can explore the other opening which isn't blocked by ice, yes?" Beira called out to V, as she gestured with her head towards the passageway. Going down the passage was uneventful, and Beira was beginning to feel her body prevailing over the poison, when the passage forked in two. No sooner had the mages chosen one and had begun going down it, when the cries of a belligerent band approaching caught their ears. "That was a dark elven war cry! The other way it is then," the God Slayer said hurriedly, turning down the other path. As they made their way round a bend, they saw about a dozen cultists garbed in purple and blue, kneeling. In their midst stood something humanoid, but seven feet tall and reed-thin, with grey skin. Its head was large and its eyes were black and beady. Where its mouth should have been were four writhing tentacles, and its fingers ended in claws. The band of shouting aggressors seemed to be coming down the passage towards where Beira and V had encountered the mindflayer and its cultists.

With a voice that sounded smooth but disgusting, like abyss slime, the creature pointed towards the mages and said, "they die!"

Even though the attention was brought to V, his guildmate took care of the remaining cultists with swift steps and even swifter execution. Although the attack of the elf was a most unfortunate case of an attack backfiring on her. The moment of the blade she called back skewering her enticed a chuckle out of the tattooed man. Beira went on to study the fallen and V leaned against the stone, with his back to the room, to alleviate some of the pressure on his joints. That tiny moment of respite was quickly interrupted by sounds of struggle from down below. The man turned around on his heel, to peek out from behind the rocky formation.

There was now a man, pressed against the wall of the cave room and he exchanged a few words with Beira. It seemed that the man belonged to the Magic Council, of which V was sort of aware. They did oversee mages and Guilds and their business, but could not equate to the power the Council of Archmages in Bellum held. However, something about the encounter felt strangely off. Something permeating through the air was attempting to dull V's senses, making him frown. It could very well disrupt his abilities, but the mage reckoned that his mind was stronger than the something. If only it could dull the pain in his bones.

From clouds of shadow that appeared around the room, more robed individuals appeared, seemingly intent on getting their point across, that the intruders were most definitely not wanted. Beira had her band of cultists to deal with and V had his own little group of three to deal with. They were clad in both colour schemes, armed with various ornamental weaponry. Two of the cultists charged at him, with one of them staying behind, most likely with the idea of using magic or perhaps even healing the front assailants. The tattooed man would theatrically sigh, as he built up a force of ice in his body. "I suppose I can't have a fair lady do all the fighting. Would be a travesty." The man said as he snapped his fingers and four icicles conjured behind him and threw themselves into the incoming enemies.

Two icicles for each of the two charging cultists. One of the cultists was quite sloppy, unable to dodge the skewering, but the other seemed to have much better reflexes, as only one of the icicles made contact, as they jumped way forward to avoid the piece of ice. The tattooed man was unfortunate enough to have an engraved blade slash through his right upper arm. He winced as pain surged through his body, only amplifying the previous as he dropped his cane with a loud sound of metal hitting stone. Seeing as it was seemingly the right time to continue tearing his body apart, ice covered his left fist and he drove it into the cultist's head that still hovered above him. That was enough to make the cultist drop onto the floor, only for V to be jumped by the last cultist that had previously stayed behind. They held a vial with a dark purple, murky liquid that they promptly smashed over the dark mage's head. The liquid gave off no smell, but the skin that wasn't covered by his leather vest promptly started to burn and deepened the feel of dullness.

It was most definitely going a wee bit overboard, but V conjured an another set of icicles, wanting to ensure the cultist's demise. The dark mage took a few shaky steps back, as the cultist attempted to grab V, but unsure of what was the motivation behind the motion. The barrage of icicles made short work of the robed individual, as the tattooed man gasped for air. His arm was bleeding, his skin was quite possibly being melted off of his person and he was also most likely poisoned in some capacity aswell. Thank goodness he had just the perfect remedy. A calming wave of ice energy washed over him and he felt the burning, as well as the dullness fading away. The man straightened himself up and placed his hand upon the bleeding wound. Ice energy flowed through it, partially closing it. However, once the adrenaline started to subside, V felt his knees begin to shake and pain shoot up his left arm. Little souvenirs from the fight. The man gingerly bent down and picked up his cane that he had carelessly dropped before. He would take a few deep breaths, until his knees weren't as shaky, once he headed downwards, into the room.

As soon as he made his way into the room itself, Beira invited the man to venture forward, through the entrance that he left opened. The man nodded, not to keen on spending energy on a useless confirmation. On the ground level there was a partially damaged frozen figure, among other corpses. As the tattooed man passed by, he briefly looked over it, to marvel at the magnificent ice. It was similar in quality to his own and yet so different at the same time.

V noticed that Beira wasn't faring the best, but he knew that he couldn't do much for her. The stony passage was empty, save for the sound of their footsteps. Until the mages came upon a fork in the passage system. As if the labyrinth inside the mountain couldn't get more complicated and deeper. They blindly chose one of the paths, until strange cries, which Beira identified as a cry of dark elves, could be heard from the side of the other passage and the two mages promptly changed their direction. The tattooed man was starting to feel quite exhausted, a lot of his magical power spent, as well as the ever more agonizing pain that pulsated through his body. He did his best to keep up with his guildmate.

After passing a bend in the passageway, the area opened up a bit again, and yet again, it was filled with an another group of cultists, which seemed to be strong in numbers, as well as an another creature from the presumed deep. The abomination had a general human shape, but most of the features were anything but. There were still tentacles involved in the design, this time, however, they were coming out of where its mouth was supposed to be. And even more surprisingly, it spoke up, ordering the death of the two intruders as it pointed at them.

The number of cultists was something that worried V, considering his diminished form. He wasn't sure how Beira was feeling, but if she wasn't getting exhausted by her tougher fighting, then he surely had greatly underestimated the woman's capabilities. The man grit his teeth, as he built up ice energy, once more. With a snap of his fingers, a solid wall of ice would appear a few steps ahead of the two mages. It left some space above and to the sides, but V didn't think the cultists would be able to scale the ice to climb over. The same couldn't be said for the otherworldly abomination. The man would sigh in exasperation, sneaking a peek at his guildmate as he fully leaned on his cane for support. "We have a few moments to ourselves, before they realise they can go around it." The man would chuckle in a hushed voice, as he reached out with his free hand and gave a bit of his flourishing ice energy to Beira, to help with the healing process of her own wounds. It wasn't much, but he hoped it would provide a bit of a pick up for the woman. "I shall be honest. I am quite exhausted and I don't know how you are feeling, Beira." The man would continue, as he weighed the few options they had. "Let us make short work of them, shall we?" He would smirk, despite his growing exhaustion as the sound of shuffling of robes grew closer.

A Song of Utgardr Empty Re: A Song of Utgardr

Beira was personally beginning to wonder how the two mages were going to deal with the new problem of the mindflayer, when a large wall of ice materialized between them and the cultists, as V snapped his fingers. She turned to her fellow guild mate, as he poured revitalizing ice magi into her tired frame. "That is much appreciated," she said gratefully, nodding her head as she felt a bit more invigorated. The poison in her bloodstream was still there, but it seemed to have diluted, especially after V had used his healing spell on her. She thought about eating some ice out of the frozen wall that stood before the mages, but there was something about the wall that was offsetting, like the ice was mixed with something else, something contrary to her fundamental magic. So she simply decided not to attempt to eat it.

"I suppose it's safe to say I'm in the same boat as you are, V," Beira replied, metaphorically identifying with V's attestation of his fatigue, as she looked around for anything that could give the duo an advantage. "However, with your timely help, I think I should have some wind for another bout of action. Although..." she trailed off, as her roving eyes caught a poorly illuminated corner of the room. There was a wide crack, large enough to be squeezed into, it seemed, though Beira could not tell just how far into the rock the crack went. Her sixth sense interestingly revealed that if it was even a closed ended feature, it was deep enough into the rock to allow the two mages to enter it.

Before she could mention her plan to V, the ice wall shattered like glass, its pieces cascading vertically downwards in shimmering crystals. The abomination had a hand held out, and the residues of some strange magic filled the air. "I don't know whether you have had the displeasure of meeting a mindflayer, V," the Winter Goddess quipped, as she took a ready stance in preparation of the intended onslaught by the cultists, who were trying as fast as possible to get over the ice. Suddenly, everyone paused, as footsteps echoed into the hall. The screaming party that had been on the heels of the mages had arrived. There was a pause of silence, as Beira and V stood between two groups of cultists, one led by dark elves, and the other by the mindflayer. Then an aggressive cry in a strange tongue was screeched by one of the dark elven priestesses, and the red-and-black robed cultists charged forward.

"Quick, V!" Beira exclaimed, pulling the tattooed man and stuffing herself into the crack in the cave wall before pulling him in as well, though she did try to be as gentle as possible without sacrificing speed. Once he was in the crack, she quickly gesticulated, sealing the crack with nether rime. "Precept 200: Beneficat!" A few lights sprang into existence, and V would feel himself being healed. "I'd wanted to use this spell, if we had to engage in battle again, but I guess it doubles as a decent light source," the Utgardian said. "Oh, and don't get unnerved about the whisperings. They're a nice side effect of the spell." V would probably notice that disembodied voices were whispering to him, telling him of strange and ancient tidbits of magical wisdom.

Beyond the crack, there were screams and unsettling sounds of violence and lives being lost. "We had better see how far into the mountain this crack runs," Beira said, moving deeper into the space, as the lights kept hovering around the two mages. Surprisingly, the crack led far away from the cultist battle ground, twisting and turning deeper into the mountain. Soon, it opened out into a tunnel whose walls were too smooth to have been the product of natural forces. At the end of the tunnel was a light. Beira approached the light cautiously, and discovered that it revealed a large and spacious room into which the tunnel widened. The room was well lit and luxuriantly furnished, and in its center was a stone table upon which the naked alien figure of a dead mindflayer lay, its abdomen surgically opened and pinned to reveal its innards. Seated on a luxuriant throne at the end of the room was a stunning dark elf in flowing robes, her crimson eyes on the opening of the tunnel at the other end of the room.

"Come in, come in, visitors," she said in a welcoming tone. "The gods said I would have a visit from friends and enemies. The enemies have come and gone, thankfully, and the friends have been yet to come... until now. Welcome, Beira, daughter of Utgardr, and her companion, whose name I don't yet know." Beira stepped into the light of the room, a stunned look on her face. "Impossible!" she intoned, wide-eyed and almost awestruck. "Aelyd?! It cannot be."

"But it is," said the elf, rising with a smile and stepping forward. "Like yourself, I slept millennia, to come to this time and place. We are both here, because we must be. The gods have determined so, for you are a very important piece in their plan." There was something Beira was trying to remember, although she could not, something that, if she could only remember, she would be very much on her guard. But her memory was befuddled, for some strange reason, and she could only remember that she knew Aelyd from way back in Utgardr. She turned to V. "That there is Aelyd, a dark elf I knew so many ages ago in Utgardr. I'm surprised she's still alive, but she's probably the only person who who has seen the things I have seen from a day and age long gone."

"What do you remember about me, child?"

"I remember you did teach me how to fight at some point in my life, and that your methods were..." the Utgardian girl paused, as her cheeks flushed, "...rather quite impolite. And do stop calling me child!" The elf laughed. "I'm glad to see you remember my lessons with fondness. But you seem to keep forgetting the most important one." Suddenly, chains seemed to materialize from the air, wrapping themselves around Beira's wrists and attaching themselves to the room's ceiling, suspending her by her hands. Almost at the same time, chains sprang from the ground, wrapping round her legs and securing them, to prevent her from kicking. The elf gestured, and V would find himself trapped in a cube of translucent force. Beira's eyes widened for a moment, and then her face contorted in rage. "You monster! You killed Hodr!!" she screamed at the top of her lungs, straining in vain at the chains that bound her. Aelyd laughed, as she walked over to the cube that surrounded V. "A fine specimen, this one, but he seems a bit frail. I wonder if he'll last a round with me, hmmm?"

Beira was still venting. "I am going to kill you, you rotten, miserable, hag-bred--" Her tirade transformed into a high-pitched pained scream, as the elf simply tapped her cheek with one finger. "Do be a good girl and keep silent. You are ignorant of your importance, but you'll soon know your importance, Beira of Nine Souls." The Utgardian looked totally confused. "Nine souls? I don't--"

"Silly girl, ignorant as usual. Do you really think you're from Utgardr? That Hodr was actually your brother? Well, no matter. Once the gods have had me perform the necessary sacrifices they desire, your body shall be mine. And you will know pain you never knew existed, child."

If V was observant enough, he would note two things: firstly, there was some strange orb on the stone table which seemed to glow when Aelyd used magic, suggesting it was probably a power source. Secondly, while physical matter could not pass through the cube of force in which he was held, it seemed magical energy could.

The tattooed man was glad that he was able to provide a tiny bit of respite for his guildmate, despite how little it really was. Though he wasn't sure whether he was supposed to be glad or worried that Beira was similarly exhausted as him. They had a great fight ahead of them and they would need every tiny bit of strength they could muster. However, the woman seemed to be already trying to work out how to approach their dire predicament. Unfortunately, there wasn't much time for them to discuss the plan of action. The wall of ice V had conjured cracked and then shortly after shattered, the shards of ice falling down onto cave stone floor. The dark made took a little step back. The wall wasn't among the strongest of spells in his arsenal, but its strength was still supposed to be more than enough to stop their opponents. For a bit longer than it had, at least. It meant that somebody or something was quite strong and that the two mages would have to be extremely careful.

The abomination they had seen mere moments ago was standing behind where the wall of ice used to be. The tattooed man frowned, now wary of the strength of the disfigured creature. Beira asked V whether he had seen this mindflayer before and he couldn't say he had. Though he was very much positive that the mages of Bellum weren't opposed to summoning a being such as the one that was standing before them. All behind closed doors, of course. However, they had more trouble on their hands. The cultists that were trapped behind the wall of ice were starting to make their way through its remains, but all of a sudden, they stopped. From behind of the dark mages, V could hear approaching footsteps from behind them. As fast as the wall had shattered, the two mages found themselves surrounded by two cultist groups.

Getting surrounded was the last thing V would have wanted, but it seemed his guildmate already had an idea in her mind. A screech of command could be heard, before the cultist charged forward and Beira grabbed V and pulled him into a crack in the cave wall. His body protested the sudden movement, but V only grit his teeth through it. Once they were safe within the crack, the woman chanted a quick spell, which provided a bit of light, as well as healed some of the wounds that have piled up on V's body. What was strange, however, was a sudden presence of whispers. The woman seemed to be well acquainted with them, telling the tattooed man not to mind them. He couldn't say he enjoyed their presence, but as long as they didn't affect his focus, he would tolerate them.

Even though the two dark mages were no longer in the larger room, the sounds of fighting and struggling gave away that the cultists didn't simply stop their charge, once the mages disappeared. However, they were no longer their concern, as V and Beira headed ever further inside the mountain. One would think that they may be getting close to the centre of the world itself. Eventually the passage turned into a smooth tunnel, that was quite unlike the scenery they had been exposed to up to then. The man was heavily relying on his cane to push him forward. At least the path wasn't too long. An ominous light illuminated the end of the tunnel, which led into an another spacious room.

Unlike the previous rooms, however, this one had a table with a corpse of an another abomination sprawled across it, as well as its insides, besides the general luxurious look. Upon the table was placed an orb, of sorts. What its purpose was, however, he couldn't tell. Besides the table there was also a throne, upon which a dark elf lady was seated, her gaze set upon the new arrivals. The woman greeted them and Beira seemed surprised at her presence. The elven woman rose from her throne as she confirmed her identity. V's guildmate turned to him, providing a brief set of information and the man took mental note of them. "A person from the past, hmm.." The tattooed man mused to himself, quietly. If he had met somebody from his own past, he most likely wouldn't be able to hold himself back. Even if it was Rhew, his demonic mentor.

There was a little back and forth, between Beira and Aelyd, before Beira was yanked upwards, into the air, with magical chains that then bound her legs, aswell. V was going to move forward, but strange force prevented him from doing so. He bumped into a translucent wall, making him wince a little. The man would frown, worried and frustrated about the ease, with which the elven woman was able to separate the two mages. Beira loudly protested, as her elven friend looked over V's form, noting his frailty. The man stayed quiet, not keen on giving out information about himself. Beira then screamed in pain, making V grit his teeth. An another little exchange happened between the women, before the tattooed man would attempt his escapade.

The dark mage would gather ice energy into his free hand. He would form a fist with it and swing at the translucent wall. Unfortunately, his fist would be stopped short, sending a sharp jolt of pain up his arm. The man would groan, but there was one little thing he noticed. While his fist was indeed stopped, tiny specks of ice would fly through. If his ice could get through, maybe there was hope, yet. The spells were becoming rather draining, but it had to be done. The elven lady most likely didn't seem too impressed with the display of V's strength, but the man would snap his fingers once more. "This isn't over yet." The man tattooed man would growl, as a large wave of ice would conjure in front of him and travel along the ground in line in ahead of him. The wave would be aimed at the dark elf, but also managing to reach the table. The ice would then crack down the middle, ripping apart items caught in it. The table, the corpse. Both would be split by a sudden force. The third item, the peculiar orb, would find itself within the ice aswell and succumb to its force, shattering into pieces.

Beira was stunned. True, she had known she was always different from the average Utgardian, but these things Aelyd was saying seemed so unreal, and yet somehow, they seemed to be credible as well. "I don't... you're lying!" The dark elf laughed, shaking her head. "Funny how the mind believes what it wants, right?" she said in a mocking tone, as she walked slowly round the God Slayer, trailing a finger along Beira's midriff as she did. Why a simple touch would be so painful would have been difficult to understand, but Beira remembered two things about Aelyd: firstly, she did seem to possess some necromantic powers, and secondly, she was an illusionist, and a very good one at that. Which was probably why she could just easily trap the two mages. They were under an illusion. Beira tried to move, but the chains still felt very real.

"Oh please, don't try," Aelyd said with a chuckle. "You may be aware that these chains are illusions, but your mind, the subconscious that determines perception, is still very much convinced that you are bound. That's the problem with this world: even though we are quite aware of our frailties, our failings, there is nothing we can do to escape them, no matter how much we try. The gods, the Old Ones, they created you. That is the extent of their power. You belong to them, so there's no use trying to rebel against them. They have promised me power beyond my imagination, if I delivered them to you, and I already have you. They shall be coming pretty soon to collect their prize, and when they are through with you, you shall be mine, mine to do with as I please! Your inability to break my illusion is a testament of the power of the Old Ones. Hrim of Utgard was of your kind, but he rebelled against his masters and stole an artifact of power, the Key of Hrim. Its power alone has kept the both of you under my will, and it's just one of the weaker materials the Old Ones possess. Why do you think meddlers from this country's government are trying to infiltrate my cult? Because somehow, they know of its power. But they are irrelevant. When I hand you over to the Old Ones, I'll get many more of such trinkets... and you, eventually."

"You're sick!" Beira spat. Aelyd laughed again. "You have absolutely no idea just how much, child." There was a pause, as Aelyd turned to look at V, with an expression of disdain on her face, as he punched the translucent cube with no apparent success. Then she turned back to Beira, a predatory expression on her face. "So, where were we?" Whatever the answer was to that question, Aelyd would never get to know, as a large wave of ice suddenly emanated from V's cube, splitting everything in its way, down to the table on which the mindflayer's body lay. The orb sitting on the table exploded into a thousand fragments as the ice touched it, sending its pieces, as well as the items on the table flying all about as the table split in two. The cube which stood around V disappeared, as well as the chains binding Beira.

Everything seemed to move in slow motion. Too late did Aelyd realize that V's apparent frailty was too expensive to make him underestimated. She turned on the tattooed man, pointing her finger, as dark energies began gathering to the extended appendage. Knowing she had to act, but lacking almost any magic power left to do so, Beira reached out, grabbing a chisel-like piece of autopsy equipment as it sailed through the air away from the split table, and flung herself at Aelyd, plunging the blade of the item into the dark elf's neck. Aelyd turned slowly as she sank to the floor, eyes glazing over as her lips moved but no words came out, and blood flowed from her mouth. In a matter of seconds, she was dead o the floor, at the feet of the Utgardian.

"I guess that was what the Magic Council was here for," Beira said, looking at the splinters of the strange orb that had been broken by V's magic. "That matters little. I believe we should leave immediately. I'm not keen on meeting any Old Ones." At the other end of the room stood a doorway, with stairs leading upwards away from the door. Anyone close to the door would feel a draft of fresh air blowing down the stairs.

The dark skinned elven woman explained her intentions in extensive length, but whatever else she had to say after V's distasteful attempt to break out of the translucent walls would never be known. Once the ruptured ice shattered the table, along with the corpse and the orb, the chains that bound Beira and the walls that surrounded the tattooed man disappeared. The dark elf turned her attention to V, attempting to conjure a spell. The dark mage was fully leaning on his cane, which left him open to any attack, whilst not having the strength to dodge. Thankfully, V's guildmate was fast enough to retaliate, despite being only just released from her hold. The woman caught one of the tools that were sent flying from V's previous attack.

The metal part of the tool swiftly found its mark in the dark skinned lady's neck. The woman attempted to move, but her body fell to the ground within moments, with blood slowly starting to pool around her. Beira noted that the orb the man had shattered was probably the reason behind the presence of the Magic Council. The tattooed man would sigh in relief, as the rush of the running and fighting started to subside and revealed the full extent of the pain his body was going through. He would grit his teeth as his limbs started to shake from both pain and exhaustion. V felt incredibly drained, almost ready to collapse on the spot. When Beira suggested leaving the place, the tattooed man had no objections. "I very much agree with you. I fear that we would not have gotten past there 'Old Ones', unless they felt benevolent." The dark mage would agree to the woman's plan, gathering his strength to push himself to take steps towards the doorway at the other end of the room. His eyes spied a staircase leading upwards that would be their way out of the wretched mountain's bellows. "Let us make haste."
