    Monsters Defeated:
    -Ghost of Xmas Past

Cassiti had dealt with a fair few violent spirits before. One of her abilities as Oracle was being able to sense and read a person’s soul, as well as occasionally communicate with the dead, and not a lot of dead people were necessarily at peace with their lot. However, she had to say that this was the first time a spirit had ever actually attempted to attack her. She had been walking through the utterly breathtaking forest of Sakuramori with Cordelia -- a new recruit with Meliora Vitae that had invited her to join her at a Christmas festival that had been set up there -- when all of a sudden she’d found herself frozen in place.

An illusion played in her head, temporarily taking over the visage of the beautiful forest. She watched a younger version of herself breaking her daily meditation training to sneak away to the balcony that overlooked the city of Avalon below. The young Oracle watched wistfully at the people milling about below for several long minutes before one of the priestesses caught her. She’d gotten heavily reprimanded for shirking from her responsibilities, scolded back into her meditation.

But the truth was, Cassiti wasn’t really focused on the image. She was focused on what she sensed: the lingering presence of a malicious spirit. Locating the spirit in her senses, the young woman used that connection to break through the illusion and bring herself back to the real world where she found herself face to face with the ghost of a young girl mere inches from her face, hands out toward her as if about to place Cassiti under another spell. The Oracle reacted immediately in defense of her life, reaching into the spiritual plane with her magic and gripping the ghost tightly, the little girl gasping in shock. With the wave of her wrist, Cassiti sent the girl back in time a few hundred years.

After that, she quickly looked around for her companion, already sensing the presence of other spirits, both living and dead. “We ahr naht alone,” Cassiti told her, looking around with an alert frown to try to locate the others she felt.

    “What’d you say, Cassiti?”

Cordelia had been completely caught up in the sights and sounds of the world around her. Sakuramori was quite the spectacular sight to behold and she was gasping and giggling with excitement as she flitted around the immediate area. Even better was the fact that Cassiti, one of Meliora Vitae’s Aces, had agreed to join her at the Christmas event! The Ca-Elum native was used to Christmas festivities on her island but she was exhilarated at the thought of seeing how Fiore celebrated. She’d been walking along enjoying the sights when her companion spoke up, saying something about not being alone.

But before she could truly ask the woman what she meant, Cordelia spotted something racing towards her. It looked like a woman in an elegant gown, seated upon… well, it looked like an undead reindeer! “Oh wow, is that part of the event? That’s so co-” The islander wasn’t able to finish her thought as the new woman, now quite obviously a spirit, summoned an icy blade and slashed it at her. Cordelia haphazardly dove out of the wave, the long and thin sword missing her by centimeters at best.

She sort of rolled over the ground like a hot mess, landing on her butt with her arms keeping her up. “Well that was rude!” Cordelia responded, frowning. She got herself to her feet, brushing off the dirt from her rump even as the reindeer and its rider turned around for another pass. “I get the feeling you don’t want to talk this out?” the islander asked, as she pulled her purse, hanging from her shoulder, forward a bit. When no answer came, Cordelia shrugged and smiled innocently. “Okay! You asked for it, lady!”

Rather than retreat, she charged towards the approaching reindeer. She put herself right in its path, only altering her direction slightly near the last moment. She planted her foot, spun around on her heel and swung her purse around like it was a mace. And it may as well have been, considering it utterly demolished the reindeer and split it into two clouds of smoke. The spirit flew forward, launched from the reindeer’s back but managed to catch herself and charge back towards Cordelia.

But she was ready, reaching into her purse as she started to turn and face the approaching ghost. Her purse started to change, transforming quickly as a turret emerged from its front. As she came fully around, the now-minigun burst to life, filling the spirit with magically-infused holes. The spirit stumbled back before fading from existence. Cordelia pulled something within her purse and changed it back into its normal shape, leaping into the air in a victory jump. “Oh this is exciting, isn’t it Cassiti?”

Deeper into the mysterious Fiorian forest that glowed, boggled the mind, and was hopefully riddled with herbs he could use to concoct new teas, a male was caught in the throes of illusion. Nearby hovered a black-cloaked wraith, wings and a halo of thorny twigs chattering and crackling as it moved. Icy mist chilled the trapped Dongxian. The numbness of his body enhanced the visions shown to him by an enemy too strong. Despite the dark tendrils twisting up his legs and gripping his chest, there was a small, arrogantly pleased smile on his lips.

The spirit tried to scare him with visions of a terrible future. He'd found his father and also the secret he longed after. As a full-blooded demon, the energy that crackled off of his onyx horns burst out and razed entire villages. His conjured waves levelled entire ecosystems and turned red with blood. With a fangy grin, he laughed, revelling in his power and his true calling, a proud and equally horrifying demon standing watch behind him. He didn't do these actions out of hatred for humankind, but instead only wanted to fulfil the purpose assigned to him. The purpose they assumed he was here to serve. Chaos would rule his life and no one would ever look down their noses at him again.

Displeased that the vision wasn't frightening the victim, she altered what he saw on the fly to the opposite. Now what he saw was a nightmare. His father was dead. He was stuck as a half-breed, belonging to neither and accepted by neither. Everything was empty and alone, and as if to highlight his sensitivity about not only being seen as inferior but also his shorter stature, even the trees sneered down on them as they drank his dark waters and broke the horns from his demon's mask. A pale hand white-knuckled the polearm vaguely pointed at the Ghost of Christmas Future. Broken and defeated, Tao would return to the isolated home of his late mother deep in the marshy forests of Dongxia to live out the rest of his days penniless, silent, and bored. Tao screamed in frustration, desperately trying to pull himself from these cursed visions, but not possessing any of the strength required to do so.

Another spirit appeared, this one focusing on Cordelia. The ghost bore down on her, riding upon a reindeer as she attempted to run the islander through with any icy sword. Cordelia threw herself out of the way with a quick comment about how rude the ghost’s action had been. Once the brunette started swinging her purse around at the thing and giving it a run for its money, Cassiti knew that Cordelia would be fine. Which was just as well, because she was sensing another spirit nearby, this one even stronger than the other two. A scream caught her attention and she hurried through the woods toward the sound to find a young man around her age faced off against a spirit that matched the visage of a grim reaper.

He was clearly trapped in an illusion, much like her own ghost had attempted to do to her, and while he was fighting it he clearly hadn’t managed to overcome it on his own just yet. Thankfully, the grisly spirit turned to look at her the moment she approached, sensing the woman’s connection to the spiritual world. Cassiti was rarely a woman drawn to violence or aggression, typically the type of woman to explore every peaceful avenue she could before resorting to such measures. However, when someone’s life was clearly on the line, she would not hesitate to act in their defense. Holding a hand out to the side, a thin emerald line of mist briefly materialized before a wooden quarterstaff took its place in her hand.

“You do naht belong here,” she informed the spirit calmly. “Et eez time to retarn to de world beyond.” The grim spirit quickly pulled its attention away from the young man, abandoning the illusion and freeing him in order to focus on Cassi. The spirit flung a ray of ice at her which she dodged with a careful sidestep. After that, the dark skinned woman continued to meticulously work her way forward toward the spirit, deftly either moving out of the way of incoming attacks or using her staff to knock them aside. The Spirit continued to move away from her, trying to keep distance between them.

Tapping into her magic, Cassiti halted time briefly. All around her, the entire world had come to a complete and utter stand still, even as she walked forward and brought herself within melee range of the spirit. Only then did she resume time, making it look as though she had teleported several feet instantly and catching the reaper completely off guard. The Oracle swung her staff in three quick strikes one after the other until the phantom burst into a cloud of dark ash and disappeared. Cassiti straightened herself out but continued to look around, still alert. “Dere may be moar,” she warned him gently, keeping an eye out and quickly glancing back toward Cordelia to see how she was faring.

Once you find your light, I'm sure it will lead you back here.
Cordelia had turned back to look at Cassiti, actively thrilled over the sudden adventure they had been thrown into. Much to her surprise, though, she found her guildmate racing towards a different part of the area. Frowning in concern, she managed to catch the scream of someone in agony and much like Cassi, ran through the woods towards the source. As she caught up, she found a man standing in the midst of the trees, a victim of yet another spirit roaming the woods. As Cassiti pulled out a staff and took off towards the spirit, Cordelia peeled off her current path and ran over to the man, laying a hand on his arm and pulling him away from the battle. “Hey, you’re okay now,” she told him reassuringly, watching his face to make sure his senses returned to the present. She gave him a warm smile. “Cassiti is just taking care of that last meanie and then you’ll be safe!” It was a brief explanation but hopefully it would be enough. She glanced back and watched as Cassi snapped out three quick hits and pulverized the ghost into ash. “Yeah! Work that staff, girl!” She cheered her guildmate on, oblivious to any kind of innuendo that could come from her words.

Her guildmate warned her of more danger and before she could even respond, a cracked, wavering voice spoke out through the air. “There is, you wench.” Cordelia managed to turn in time to catch the old man’s cane with her purse, the two objects slamming into one another. She groaned softly as she fought against his surprising strength, only managing to win out when she side stepped his motion and attempted to counter him. He leapt back, hovering through the air as through magic. When his feet touched the ground, the three spirits that had just been defeated reappeared by his side, having carried him away from her strike. “You lot better be saying your prayers because Christmas isn’t coming around for you!”

Cordelia mused, flipping open her purse and reaching inside. Her hand wrapped around something and started to extract it because pausing, the young girl thinking. “No, I don’t think I’ll need that to beat you guys up!” she decided, sliding the object back inside before she rummaged for something else. Then, much like her ally, she pulled out her own staff, though this one was made of steel. She spun it around once and caught it under her arm, holding it out as she tucked her purse back against her body. Then she rushed towards the group of ghosts, spinning it around. The spirits circled around her quickly, with the old man smirking just in front of her.

He may have been surprised, then, to see her smiling too. From the tips of Cordelia’s staff emerged water; two jetstreams of liquid that swiftly gained traction. They slammed into the ghosts and the old man and connected, creating a huge spinning cycle of water. The man was crying out in fear as struggled to gain some control, his arms swinging every which where. As the foursome reached the top of the water spout, they were thrown into the middle, stuck in the air for a brief moment. From below them, Cordelia had adjusted her staff, the bottom of it pointing up towards the ghosts and man. She shot them a quick peace sign before frozen air exploded out from the end of the staff, swallowing up the enemies. As the water came splashing back down to the ground, Cordelia watched as four new objects fell down to the ground. Huge blocks of ice slammed into the surface of the forest and, frozen inside, were the ghosts and the old man. His eyes looked back and forth, indicating that he was still alive. After a moment of being immersed in the ice, the three ghosts faded into nothingness. “There you go, friend. How about you cool off, huh? You seem pretty humbug,” Cordelia said with a giggle, tapping the top of the ice block with her staff before she returned it to her purse.

Then she skipped back over to Cassiti and the new guy. “Everyone okay?”

The dark tendrils and frost released him from his mental prison of mediocrity. Tao struggled to get the images out of his mind. His bright gold eyes were still distant and slow to move even as he felt hands moving him away from the tree he'd been investigating before the attack. His feet were clumsy in the beginning, but by the time he regained his balance and his view of the present, there was the face of a brunette smiling at him. He caught but a glimpse before she turned away.

His wits couldn't have returned at a better time. Another threat appeared, only the second he'd encountered, but potentially the worst of them all. It was an old man who seemed to command not only the spirit that had afflicted him but also two others. Infuriatingly, Tao could do nothing but watch as the soft brunette battled the spirits and their master with startling skill and tenacity. She didn't look the type to enjoy the thrill of battle, yet here she was barely giving them a chance to fight back before her staff exploded into a water attack. That enraptured him. As a half-demon with an affinity for water, finding someone else who could weird water abilities was intriguing. Then the water froze and trapped the elder along with his spirits. The spirits disappeared, vanquished. Tao was impressed and the emotion registered briefly on his face, but he soon masked it with unspoken indignation. The traveller wasn't so rude as to scold his helpers since he would have met a pathetic end indeed, but he wasn't pleased to have needed a rescue to start. Looking between the two women, Tao returned his weapon to his back and slightly bowed. "Thank you for your assistance," he said formally to the pair. If he could get any more rigid he might shatter if someone touched him too harshly. "I'm Tao. I'm in your debts. I...was not aware that Fiore had such capable warriors," Tao said out of obligation, finding his situation distasteful but necessary.

It didn’t take long for the ghosts and their summoner to be handled, with Cordelia easily dispatching the rest of the group with her own staff. By the time her guildmate was done, all that remained were three spirits and an old man trapped inside large blocks of ice. The spirits faded away after a moment, leaving just the man by himself. Cassiti calmly walked back over to join the other two, dismissing her staff in a puff of green mist. “I ahm fine, yes,” she said in response to Cordelia’s question. The young man put his weapon away and bowed slightly to them, thanking them for their help. For her part, Cassiti didn’t really seem to notice whether or not he was being weirdly stoic for she herself wasn’t exactly the most outwardly emotional of people. He introduced himself as Tao and voiced his thoughts that he owed them, and that he hadn’t been aware of Fiore having such worthwhile warriors.

The young man’s aura was strange, to say the least. Cassi could sense something darker about him, something that felt almost tained to her spiritual senses, but not enough to cause any kind of alarm. She sensed… quietness. Reservation. Discipline. He seemed a very calculating person, and there was a darkness to him, if a slight one. That being said, he was being exceptionally respectful, and in the end that was all that really mattered to the Oracle. She crossed her arms over her chest and returned his bow graciously. “I ahm Cassiti Calixte. Et eez a pleasure to meet you, Tao.” Letting Cordelia introduce herself, the dark skinned woman straightened out. “We were on our wey to de festivahl. Would you like to cohm weeth us?”

The young man appeared to be by himself, and Cordelia had made it clear to her that Christmas was a holiday that was meant to be spent together with other people. Even if neither of them knew Tao, he was being cordial with them and it was not in Cassiti’s nature to not extend kindness in return. She did turn her gaze toward Cordelia to make sure she was okay with it, but Cassi already knew that the brunette would be all for it. Cordelia loved meeting new people and making new friends.

Once everything was settled, they made their way into the heart of the festival where all the booths had been set up amongst the beautiful trees of the forest. There were breathtaking lights and decorations, and lots of booths set up with games and food and drinks. Luckily, Cassiti had a source of income now thanks to Meliora Vitae and thus actually had some jewel she could spend on little things here and there. They wandered for a little bit just to see what was there, stopping occasionally to try some holiday snacks and some treats, before a game attendant managed to lure them into a game booth that centered around trying to guess what was inside a wrapped present.

Cassiti took the box and gave it a little shake, not entirely sure what to do at first. Since she was unfamiliar with Christmas customs, the game was a little strange to her but not in a disinteresting way. The music that was being played on speakers around the festival grounds changed to a song she barely even paid attention to, something with some high pitched voices singing a song called Christmas don’t be late. At first she barely even noticed the music as she focused on trying to guess what was in the box, shaking it and smelling it, trying to weigh its contents. She wound up guessing incorrectly and didn’t win the prize, but as far as she was concerned the game was still fun and she simply turned to watch and see how the others were doing.

Once you find your light, I'm sure it will lead you back here.
Now that the spirits had been dealt with and the perpetrator behind it had been put on ice, Cordelia could finally take a minute to breath. All that excitement had gotten her blood pumping and she took a second to just inhale through her nose and out through her mouth. Then she turned around, still smiling bright as she skipped back over to her guildmate and their new friend. Cassiti was quick to label herself as fine but the new guy remained quiet. In fact, he seemed rather bothered, a heavy frown on his face. He was probably just bothered that the guy and his spirit had been so mean to him! After a moment he thanked them both for their help, bowing to them graciously. He introduced himself as Tao and remarked about his lack of knowledge over Fiore’s combat prowess. Cassi took the comment without adding anything to it, returning his bow and introducing herself. “And I’m Cordelia! Cordelia Beaumont from Ca-Elum! I’m pretty new to Fiore as well. Oh right!” Realizing that she hadn’t returned a polite gesture, she took hold of her skirt and gave the man a small, adorably naive curtsy.

Cassiti explained that they had been on their way to the Christmas festival and asked if he would like to come with them, a suggestion that earned a surprised, enthused gasp from Cordelia. “Oh you must come with us! It’s going to be a lot of fun! It’ll be nothing like what happened here -- no scary ghosts or wicked men. Please come with us, Tao. We’d both love for you to join.” Cordelia was an excitable person but she, somehow, was able to put forth a very warm, welcoming aura about herself. Traits that would often annoy people were softer and kinder when they came from her and, even if she was getting on someone’s nerves, she’d probably blissfully be unaware unless they told her. She genuinely wanted everyone around her to be happy and enjoying themselves, no matter how short a time she knew them.

Once they had figured everything out, it was a short trip through the woods until they wound up at the festival, purposefully and wonderfully transposed against the backdrop of the woods. Cordelia somehow managed to keep herself from squealing as she looked around before she turned back to Cassiti and Tao. “So I’ve never been to a Christmas in Fiore but I hear it’s similar to Ca-Elum. I’m not sure how much you know about Christmas, Tao, and Cassiti, I think you mentioned something about a Yule celebration. Christmas celebrations are a little bit like that but much grander! They host festivals like this one, make movies and songs about it, bake lots of food and honor it in a very public, grand-standing kind of way. It can be a lot of fun! Let’s look around and see what they have!”

Through the festival they went, trying out food and looking at some of the set ups. Eventually one attendant lured them in with a game of guess the present, Cordelia’s hands shaking in front of her in jubilation. She took up one of the boxes and inspected it, putting on perhaps the first serious look she had made since she arrived in Fiore. She studied it, gave it a small shake and that’s when she noticed that the song playing in the speakers above had changed. “Oh I remember this one! I was just a kid when this came out!” she said with glee as she started to hum along with the otherwise annoying tune. “I’m going to say it’s… a box of candy canes!” She opened it up and, instead, found some small plastic soldiers. “Oh that’s cute too!” she said with a laugh, even as the song repeated itself. Boy, they really loved that song, huh?

Clearing his throat, he turned toward the girls with one brow particularly tense, though he'd yet to abandon his stiff Dongxian formality and manners because they had saved his life and were quite obviously his superiors. "Pleasure to meet you, Cassiti Calixte and Cordelia Beaumont," he said, thought he names were a bit of a struggle for his accent. Tao managed to form the sounds not native to his tongue as long as he took them slow. His training in other languages was extensive and was already paying off. It was interesting that Cordelia was from Ca-Elum, since he'd made a brief stop there on his way to Fiore. He'd had that previous encounter with the accent from there, but Cassiti's accent mystified him.

Though he wasn't very familiar with the holiday of Christmas, he had heard of it before. People in his country had adopted at least parts of it in recent history, but that was in the large cities. For those like him, living far out into the forest outskirts, it wasn't really celebrated. Tao had been oblivious to the festival, but now that he was aware, he wished to avoid it. Avoiding it didn't seem like an option now that he was indebted to these two women who were rather insistent his attend. Cassiti was sombre in comparison to the extremely perky Cordelia. Tao could feel something in him die at just how happy the strange, purse-wielding girl was. This already felt annoying. He nodded his begrudging agreement, following them to the colourful and loud event with dread that slowly turned into hesitant curiosity.

It was garish in his opinion, but not so much that it was unpleasant. Tao was neutral about it all, simply taking in the unfamiliar sights and sounds with his forehead jewel dimly glowing teal until he discovered there was such a thing as Christmas Tea. As a tea and herb enthusiast, he wasted no time spending jewel on a cup for himself. It was a lovely black tea with a cinnamon-spiced finish. The tea alone was enough to bring the very ghost of a smile to his otherwise down-turned lips. The jewel warmed to green. It was far from the legendary, rarest tea he longed to either find or create himself, but he'd not come across a tea yet that he couldn't enjoy, provided it was brewed properly. Aside from the tea, though, Christmas just seemed like a flashy and colourful excuse for people to be way too loud and cheerful. And the music was annoying.

They approached a vendor with mounds of gifts. The goal was for people to try and guess what was inside. Strange, but not unamusing. He observed the two girls shake theirs and guess wrong, so he did the same, except he tragically guessed correctly. Mostly because of the unmistakable odour. His shake had loosed the stench within, causing him to wrinkle his nose and recoil, handing the gift back to the vendor. Tao was a little peeved. "Is it customary to gift someone shit for Christmas?" he asked in a dead voice, though his bright gold eyes obviously wanted an explanation for why he was holding a wrapped box of excrement. The tell-tale jewel shifted to an annoyed orange. The vendor did little more than laugh and tell him he had guessed correctly, gifting him peppermints and a voucher for free festival snacks, but poor Christmas-ignorant Tao was left to puzzle over what he assumed was a gross tradition he had no context for.

Turning away from the booth, his bright golden eyes turned on the girls for clarification. "Will there be more shit? Because, if so, I may take my leave..."

Something wasn’t right. Why was that song playing so much? She frowned and looked around while Tao and Cordelia finished opening their gifts, trying to see if anyone else was noticing the repetition, only to discover that she was actually hearing other music playing through the speakers around the fairgrounds. The annoying song was somehow stuck in her head, playing over and over on a repeated loop. It was a bit frustrating, but she managed to keep herself from being overwhelmed by the feeling, doing her best to ignore it and the song to stay focused on her company and their activities.

Cordelia opened her gift to reveal some toys in the shape of soldiers, while Tao opened his extremely foul smelling gift to find a pile of feces. Even Cassi, with all her poise and discipline, couldn’t stop herself from grimacing at the awful scent and pinching her nose to try and block it out. Tao handed the box back, understandably irritated, even as the game attendant laughed it off and gave him the prize for guessing correctly. The young man then asked them if there would be more excriment involved in future activities, as that would be grounds for him to depart. “I hope naht. Dat woold be a strange custom..” Unfortunately, she was just as in the dark as Tao was, which would leave it up to Cordelia to explain.

Turning to look at her guildmate, something in the air caught her eye. Floating above them was a small pair of green leafs that she’d never seen before. She tilted her head. “What eez dis?” she asked, pointing up at it where it hovered between Cordelia and Tao. “Eez et anothar Christmas t’ing?”

Once you find your light, I'm sure it will lead you back here.
Oh well that was a most unfortunate gift!

Cordelia and Cassi had both, unfortunately, guessed wrong with their gift. Both of their attentions turned to their newly acquired partner, eager to see what it was that was hiding in his box. Unfortunately, as he plucked off the top, it was revealed to be a pile of feces. Cordelia frowned, a facial movement that didn’t often come to or suit her face. “That’s not customary! Not customary at all!” she insisted, even as the vendor laughed it off and rewarded Tao for his correct guess. “Oh that is just no fun, what a rude way of tricking people,” the peppy girl said, tossing a glance at the attendant that was as close to venomous as she could muster. “Don’t worry, Tao, there shouldn’t be any more… uh… poop. If there is, then they will have to answer to me!” she declared, thrusting a thumb at herself and smiling proudly, clearly assured of her ability to bring justice.

She was just about to point to a different booth when Cassi gestured above Cordelia’s head. The curious brunette looked up and found a small gathering of green leaves hovering in the open air between herself and Tao. She cocked her head quizzically before she remembered, snapping her fingers and grinning. “Oh! That’s mistletoe! It’s another Christmas tradition. Any two or more people that are under the mistletoe need to give one another a kiss for good luck and season's tidings!” She turned to Tao with an even, warm look. “I know we just met but it’s a harmless little tradition. I don’t mind as long as you don’t!” She gave him a bright smile as she took a couple of steps forward and then leaned in, pucking her lips and clearly offering to fulfill the obligations of the mistletoe with him!

Now that he was assured that faeces were not usually part of the holiday traditions and it was just a prank, Tao did his best to rid his demeanour of the annoyance he could feel in his tensed shoulders. "I see," he nodded, crossing his arms peevishly. If he'd been alone, he'd have probably taught the vendor how perilous it was to hand wrapped poo to a half-demon, but the ray of sunshine who couldn't scare a mouse with that "punishing" glance and her unwitting shadow had him on good behaviour. The least he could do to repay them in part for their rescue is not ruin the festival.

Cassiti suddenly brought his attention to the strange plant overhead. Whilst she wondered about it and its purpose, Tao pondered its medicinal and tea-making qualities. It might be poisonous since no one had bothered to harvest its berries. It was hovering as if enchanted, so Tao puzzled if that was a naturally occurring event or if it was magicked for the festival. Of course, it was Cordelia who enlightened the two non-celebrators to the tradition of mistletoe, and Tao was notably shaken. He also tried not to seem shook, but covering shookness with nonchalance rarely entirely worked. Instead, the half-demon looked like a headache had just come on.

So they were to kiss. Mistletoe was a strange herb, he decided. Nervously glancing at Cassiti and then around in general, he debated his next action. The relentlessly perky brunette had stepped forward and was puckering her lips, which his eyes tried to avoid but ultimately were drawn to. Tao was not exactly the most emotional or open of beings, given how he was raised. No friends and little social mixing hadn't gifted him with many opportunities for romance or the associated actions, no matter how meaningless. Tao had never kissed someone before. His nerves weren't caused by Cordelia directly, but more that he didn't want to make a fool of himself by somehow underperforming. He was a prideful creature, but he was no coward. Declining or running off would be worse, so there was only one thing to do. He had to be quick about it before the pause between them got too awkward.

Clearing his throat, Tao aimed to make quick work of the stupid ritual. With the smallest of blushes tickling his ears, he stiffly leaned forward and placed his lips on hers. Christmas was a weird holiday. Encouraging strangers to kiss under a plant...

His body paused a moment as the scent hit him. Tea? His hand came around to slide behind her neck, holding her in the kiss while he investigated. In their lip-lock, his tongue just barely tickled her bottom lip that he'd caught between his. Tea! Her mouth tasted like tea, his favourite thing. Brows lifting in surprise, Tao lingered for longer than Cordelia likely intended, caught up in the flavour, which raised his opinion of her drastically in an instant. However, he wasn't so distracted that he forgot that he was kissing someone even if he didn't realize he'd kissed her too long already, so the dark-haired man pulled away and, with head tilted, asked the only question on his mind. "You like tea. What's your favourite?" he asked, genuinely pleased for the first time today.

Apparently, the leafy green was called mistletoe, and its purpose, at least as far as Christmas traditions were concerned, was to invite two or more people to share a kiss when caught standing beneath it. All in all, it was a tradition that Cassiti thought was a little… well, invasive. What happened if someone didn’t want to participate? Were they shunned or ridiculed for saying no? It was a good thing the plant had wound up over Cordelia and Tao, as Cassiti would have been duty bound to decline. Still, a small part of her couldn’t help but feel jealous. Not over the fact that Cordelia would get to kiss Tao or vice versa, as she wasn’t the type of woman to think overly much about whether or not she found people attractive. Rather, the jealous stemmed from the touch and intimacy of the act itself, something Cassiti was unused to as she was not allowed to touch other people at all unless absolutely necessary, not even a hug.

Boy, it sure was a heck of a kiss though. Her blush couldn’t be seen through her dark skin, but a wave of second hand embarrassment washed over her as Tao seemed to almost reluctantly and rigidly lean forward to kiss the other woman’s offered lips, only to stop once actually upon them and take the kiss so deep that she was sure she saw his tongue get involved. Emerald eyes wide, Cassiti looked away in an attempt to give them… privacy? They couldn’t really have privacy out here at this festival, she supposed, but given that her reaction was a bit instinctual she couldn’t exactly help it. She knew it was done when he spoke up, asking her about.. Tea? Had he tasted tea on her mouth? Was that why he had gotten so excited? She certainly had sensed a curiosity from him during the act, but not necessarily a lust like most people had when kissing.

Yet he looked so happy about it when she turned to see them again, like the fact that he had tasted tea on her had made his entire day. Did he truly like tea so much? As Cordelia answered his question, Cassiti took a moment to think to herself. So far, the general theme of Christmas seemed to be giving. You were supposed to give things to the people you cared about. While Cassi didn’t necessarily have anyone that she felt especially close to, Cordelia had been very kind to invite her here and Tao was so pleased over tea that she felt moved to at least try to get involved in the spirit of things. Cupping her hands together, a fine green mist built up in her hands, spilling over her palms a bit as she called to her magic. It took only a second or two before the mist evaporated, and in her hands were two small cloth satchels that were tied closed with a delicate twine.

Once there was an appropriate opening in the conversation, she held them out for Cordelia and Tao to each take one. “Chreestmas eez about giving geefts, yes? I ahm new to dis, so I ahm naht shoore if dis is right, but… since you both like tea… deez ahr tea leaves froom my home, Avalon. You cannot find dem in Earthland.”

Once that was done, they moved along to another activity, this one for putting together ugly Christmas sweaters. It was a bizarre tradition, but Cassiti found she actually quite enjoyed the hands on craft. The sweater she made was just awful, though she didn’t know if that was because she’s succeeded in her attempt to make it bad, or because she simply had no experience with such things and thus was fated to make something ugly no matter what she did. There were flashing lights pinned to the green woolen garment, as well as red and gold puffs of cotton and shimmering bits of tinsel, all arranged in such a way as to look like decorations on the silhouette of the Christmas Tree that had been pre-sewn onto the sweater. It was utterly gaudy, and easily the most atrocious thing she’d ever put together, but somehow looking at the ugly thing brought her a weird sense of innocent joy. She even smiled for the first time since even Cordelia had met her, a small and muted expression, but it was there nonetheless. Doing as the others at the booth did, she carefully removed her cloak and dismissed it magically, pulling the horrendous top on over her shirt so she could wear the new sweater instead.

Once you find your light, I'm sure it will lead you back here.
Cordelia expected the kiss to be, well, stiff! After all, they’d only known one another for the greater amount of thirty minutes or so. But a tradition was a tradition and it was harmless, really. Unless he had a personal issue with affection, which she would totally understand. But as she leaned forward, she opened a single eye to look at him and saw that he had opted to just go through with it. His lips met hers and she couldn’t help the giggle behind her pursed lips, far too amused and ready to pull apart and make a joke to lighten the mood.

But oh boy was she taken for a ride! Apparently Tao was far more into the kiss than she expected. His hand came up to her neck and pulled her close. Her eyes flew open as he deepened the kiss, his tongue just barely grazing her lip. She looked bewildered but after a second, she melted into the kiss, putty in the strange man’s arms. It had been so long since she’d been kissed and never like that. There was such passion behind him and Cordelia got a little caught up in it. When he finally pulled apart, she felt light on her feet, stumbling a step as she found her grounding. He asked her a question, something about tea. “Huh?” he asked quizzically, still trying to wrangle her thoughts back. Somehow she managed to collect herself before she came off as rude or worse, a floozy. “Oh! Well there’s this Midian oolong tea that is just divine. It’s probably my favorite. That’s uh… that’s what I had a little while ago.” His question about the tea after basically tasting her mouth made a lot more sense. He must have tasted her tea and wanted to know more!

Then why was she still blushing? Luckily Cassiti picked the perfect time to remind them that she was there too, stepping forward to offer satchel to each of them. She asked about what Christmas was for and assumed it was about the gifts. Upon the mention of tea, she offered them some leaves from her home known as Avalon, which apparently provided rare and unique leaves. “Oh my waves, Cassi!” Cordelia said, practically bouncing as she gingerly held the satchel. “This is an amazing gift. You got it right on the money! Thank you.” She then turned to Tao. “And I’ll be sure to get you some of that oolong tea as a present as well. Then we can all get together and try different teas!” Oh this was so exciting!

As they continued along their journey, Cordelia gave Tao a nudge with her shoulder against his own. “Hey, you’re a darn good kisser, by the way!” She was doing her best to make light of the moment, now that she was sure that it had hit her more than it had him. She gave him an earnest smile before she continued to go along, the song still playing over and over in her head without issue. She stopped to watch Cassiti visit a setup for making ugly sweaters, the soft spoken woman put together a truly atrocious sweater, easily succeeding at the point of the event. And it was utterly adorable to see Cassi smile at her creation, pride brimming off of her as she dismissed her cloak and pulled on the sweater. “It looks amazing, Cassiti. You did an awesome job!” Cordelia told her guildmate, giving her a thumbs up and a bright smile.

"Midian oolong," Tao repeated, still looking at her with a high level of interest, but not in the way he probably should have after such a steamy kiss. He was completely oblivious that he'd just snogged her into a fog, far too occupied with this new tea discovery. Dongxian teas were thought to be superior in every way, but the one she mentioned was a flavour unlike any other. This was why he was travelling! Most of the reason, that is. Becoming a full demon was his main goal, but he could admit that tea and finding the perfect herb were very high on his list and could delay his loftier goal. What if he no longer craved the herbal goodness once his blood was purified of his human inferiority?

Before he could interrogate her about any other teas she had experienced, Cassiti joined his shortlist of people he didn't hate. In her hands were offerings for both of them. Christmas gifts, it seemed. Tao hadn't noticed where they came from, but he hardly cared. Tea was on his mind as much as it was in Cordelia's mouth, and now in Cassiti's generosity. He eagerly accepted and immediately rose the small satchel to his nose, giving it a sniff. His yellow eyes widened. It smelled unlike anything he'd ever experienced. He'd never heard of Avalon in all of his studies, but if this is what just one type of tea from their herbs smelled like, then he made a promise that he would trek there and explore for more. Today's trip was turning out to be very fortunate for him, and after such a terrible start! He bowed deeply and thanked Cassiti with more gratefulness than he'd shown even as they saved his life earlier, perhaps an indication of just how much he loved tea. As Cordelia's perky voice chimed in after with an offer to gift him the Midian oolong tea and presented the offer to have a tea party of sorts, Tao extended his deeply thankful bow to her as well. "That would be lovely."

There was an awkwardness about him in the moments following. For two women who he owed a debt, it felt wrong to take more gifts from them without attempting to repay them. They kept walking and he kept puzzling, perhaps even seeming peeved until Cordelia nudged him. Twisting his head to peer over at him, the happy-go-lucky woman said something surprising. She'd brought up the kiss. He thought this was odd, but kept that comment to himself. A smug smirk crept onto his lips, though. Of course, he was good at it. He'd never been worried otherwise. "Thank you. That was my first," he told her, his tone bland though his intention was definitely a humblebrag.

Now that Cassiti was beginning some sort of pointless craft and Cordelia was focused on that, he felt rather impressed to offer a gift to the two women in return. Though his emotions were much more understated as an aloof individual, his normal crabbiness had been bypassed for the moment and he felt generous. His ego, however, was still in full swing despite the damage it had endured at the hands of the ghosts. The compliment about his kissing ability had reminded him of his exceptional skills. "I will make you both a blend from my collection," Tao declared, bringing his large bag around to his front. He meant immediately, as well. Walking off toward an unused craft table nearby, he set about placing many containers of dried leaves and fruits. He was confident that he'd be able to make blends that both of them would like. Taking out some empty tea bags, he brandished some bamboo tongs and began taking bits from several of his containers. Before long, his gifts were complete just as Cassiti was wrapping up what looked to be a tormented garment. "For you, Cassiti, I've made Longjing, or Dragon Well Tea. It's a green tea that is one of the most popular in my country," he said, handing her the small satchel. He then turned to Cordelia and did the same. "For you, I've made a Dongxian oolong called Tieguanyin, which means Iron Goddess," he said, then began packing up his collection as well as the Avalon tea he could hardly wait to brew for himself later. There was a pause, then he looked between the two. "...Happy Christmas."
