This had not been the first time Illya had been betrayed by her idols. Her mother had done so many awful things, and the Fairy Tail that she had grown up adoring was so different. She had initially joined Fairy Tail for the idea of camaraderie, and the hope that it was the same guild that her employers had told her about. The fun, the incessant devotion to ridding the world of evil, it was nonexistent in this new Fairy Tail. Everything seemed mechanical. There was such little life in it, and they seemed strangely apathetic towards those lofty goals that she had in mind. That perfect image of the white knights of Fairy Tail, riding in against the forces of evil was dashed in favor of what seemed to be little more than a business. Her bosses told her of the times that Fairy Tail's guild hall could be easily confused for a tavern, and the loud noises that could be heard through the entire city, and that seemed absent here. She had desired to rid the world of dark guilds, and Fairy Tail was apathetic towards her goal. She needed something drastic, and Fairy Tail was simply not enough.
Since she had awoken, she figured that if she were to be failed to be admitted into Fairy Tail, even as something as simple as a maid or waitress, she would move to join the Rune Knights. She did not realize that she had capabilities for magic, and so she could at the very least enlist into the ranks as a footsoldier that would be able to fend off against the forces of evil. However, since she had discovered her magical prowess, she came to know about a new guild that was devoted to ridding evil from the world: Dies Irae. The Rune Knights had to worry about keeping the entire country under control, and Fairy Tail perhaps was too in the public eye to be able to do anything drastic, but she nonetheless felt as though it was her obligation to rid the world of this scum of the earth.
Perhaps Dies Irae is still too drastic, child.
Yemaya was always too quick to keep Illya in a place of peace and contentment. Despite the subverted expectations, Yemaya still thought that Fairy Tail was a fine enough place for Illya. Illya could never accept something like that. She needed to do everything in her power to eliminate every dark guild out of existence, and Dies Irae was the right place to do it. From what Illya could understand, Dies Irae seemed to almost be above the law when it came to the handling of dark guilds. Vigilante work had always seemed strange to Illya, but this was a circumstance in which it seemed necessary. Dark guilds were a blight on the world, and Illya needed to remove them. She was not much of a fighter herself, admittedly. She hated combat and violence, but she needed to swallow her apprehension for the sake of the world. None of it made sense. Why had Fairy Tail rejected her requests to take the fight to the dark guilds? Why had they and the Rune Knights alike failed to assist her all those years ago in her time of need? None of it made sense. She knew that, for her own sake, she needed to join a guild, but there were so few that made sense. Sabertooth had held a rivalry with Fairy Tail. The Rune Knights and Fairy Tail had betrayed her in the past, and Fairy Tail had betrayed the girl's expectations. As such, for the purposes of her goal, the only option that remained was Dies Irae.
It'll be fine, Yemaya. Their atmosphere can't be much different from Fairy Tail's, and they specifically want to destroy dark guilds. You might not like them, but it's what's necessary in order to get revenge on mother."
Yemaya closed her eyes, still soaring in the air. Illya had thought long and hard about this decision. She was a girl that had painted Fairy Tail as this shining beacon, only to find it to be little more than a bundle of employees too focused on work to have fun. Yemaya had always warned that her expectations were too high, but Illya brushed her aside and it led to Illya's downfall. Of course, the tipping point was the lackadaisicality towards dark guilds. All the stories she had heard of how Fairy Tail nearly singlehandedly wiped out the entirety of the feared Balam Alliance, all of it seemed to flutter away in a flight of disappointment and betrayal.
Betrayal was the worst feeling Illya had about everything. There was no fault but her own for this. It was entirely because of her sky-high expectations, but she could not bring herself to even look at the town of Magnolia the same. A tickling in the back of her head brought her back to the days of her childhood. Even all those years ago, Fairy Tail failed to notice such a heinous, evil woman such as her mother living in Fairy Tail's own town. The stories she had heard from all her employers and even those from the kids who were so close to her personal hell led her to believe in an unwavering devotion to family, camaraderie, and the utmost protection of the innocent from the world of those that would dare to slither in the dark. If her childlike vision of Fairy Tail was a lie, then what else about her entire life was a lie?
Her hand tightened against Yemaya's back. The expanse of blue ocean was all that could be seen, save for a small speck of what must have been land. Yemaya began her dive towards the island, landing on its beaches. The two looked around, Illya noticing a figure approaching the landed duo. Yemaya craned her neck downwards to allow Illya to slide off. Illya made sure she was presentable as she looked at her guardian. Yemaya, too, did her best to look majestic, her head craned some forty feet in the air. Illya straightened her posture as the figure came closer.
