While on his way to partake in another job, one of an altogether different caliber off on some odd island he had never heard of before, Solmar had taken it upon himself to move on ahead and travel on his own. In so doing, he had stumbled upon a village he had never really heard of before, having a very low population due to its placement and the fact that most who grew up there would likely live out their days in the city. Either that, or they did not do well with the heat, seeking their fortunes in a more tempered environment. In a way, Solmar could understand why this was, the sun burning down upon his black hair as if drawn to it. Luckily, as a fire slayer, he did not really care much for the hot weather as it barely affected him at all. One thing it did do to him was make him somewhat tired, hungry and thirsty, though most of those were things he experienced quite frequently on a day to day basis. Hell, some of those were things he felt just about every hour.

It was for that reason that he had decided to make a stop here in the Desert village before he would make his way towards the island early the next morning. Having made his way into the local tavern before doing a bit of scouting, he ordered whatever was on the menu today. Usually eating something along the lines of ribs or a chicken leg, he felt it rather odd that they served cooked Iguana over here. Likely being because Iguana could get very slow and sluggish due to the weather and the ocean being quite close to where they were, Solmar decided on at the very least trying the local cuisine. Because of his way of life, he could honestly say that it wasn't the worst sounding thing he had ever eaten. As a child without a family or a home, he had been forced to resort to eating things like rats, fish that were already dead before he fished them out of the stream and even partially rotten fruits. Regardless of how it sounded, the fact that he was still alive today proved that there was at least some nourishment to be gained from it.

Ordering a round of Iguana and a pitcher of water, he handed the barkeep a few extra coins in exchange for information. Feeling like places such as these had troubles that most of the guilds might not even know about because of how distant and poorly located the village was, he figured that he might as well see to some of their troubles while he was here. Though initially not getting a whole lot of substantial stuff, they eventually made it to the topic of some kind of creature, or rather creatures that lived beneath the sand and swallowed up entirely animals in one go. Though they did not seem to particularly like humans, the fact that these beasts had no eyes and responded to vibrations traveling through the sand meant that they did in fact kill some from time to time. Claiming that these were once rather contained events that happened incredibly rarely, it seemed that there was something hiding in the sand that took a liking to humans over other animals. Doing his best to get some more information, it was at that point that a man accompanied by a snake pulled the attention towards him.

Apparently being some kind of victim to the beast, he told of how he and a few of his mates were out in the desert, hauling merchandize from the southern shore towards the village. It was at that point that they got attacked, the creature coming up from time to time to hurt one of them and frighten the rest of them. Making it look like it was hunting them for sport, he did not kill them but rather injured them progressively more until they just passed out or died from blood loss or from getting struck in a vital spot. Surviving only because he managed to climb up on a stone plateau, the man described how the strange beast waited around for almost an hour before it came up again. Seemingly waiting for the last of the men to make his move, it only came up to drag the bodies down into the sands once it seemed certain that the last man was gone. Telling the story in a way that made Solmar feel like he had actually been there, he could imagine how it might have been an incredibly harrowing encounter and that it had to be stopped before it claimed more people.

Being the person that he was, he rarely intervened with nature, and in nature, sometimes people got hurt or killed. When people ventured into a forest and got eaten by one of the predators that roamed there, in Solmar's opinion, they had brought it upon themselves for leaving their fancy cities unprepared. This however was different. This creature was hunting people for the fun of it, not because it was going hungry or had a litter of young to feed. The way the young black haired mage saw it, this was the kind of behavior that came with those animals that had achieved some sort of sentience, as most animals did not play with their food as violently as these things. That, and those creatures that did could not target humans because they were cats. Upon bringing his cooked Iguana and pitcher of water to his seat, Solmar told the Barkeep that he would do his best to take care of this problem, especially if there were to be some kind of price tag attached to returning the head of the beast. Replying only by saying that he would do his best, the mage believed he had heard enough to take part in this job as he bit down into his food. Interestingly enough, it tasted pretty good.

"The duty of a knight is to protect."

    A village with no name...

Perhaps it once had a name, or perhaps the residents never deigned to give it one. This settlement lost amongst the dune sea may have once been something grand - a haven for the lost, a home away from home, or it maybe it could've once belonged to thieves and brigands. Whatever the case, this Desert Village was now a simple refugee for the few populace that decided to stay.

The sun beat down harshly on the pale man's skin, his brow lightly soaked with sweat, the light but sturdy brown cloak shielded his body from the vicious gusts and blustering sands that flooded this land of heat and earth.

It was far from paradise, but to some it was there home. And in all honesty, the young knight couldn't fault them. These people were hardy folks, but folk nonetheless. They were human and all humans required bonds to properly survive. They were friends, families, lovers, each of them connected in some way. And they deserved their peace and quiet like any other person trying to live there life.

This is why Rune was here. It was a duty, but one he gladly accepted. When becoming a Rune Knight he swore to uphold peace and protection to all of Fiore. It wasn't something he just wrote down in ink, or spoke carelessly - no, he very much meant it. No matter the person, as long as they were citizens of Fiore, they fell under the same shield as the rest. From city, to forest, to swamp, to desert, every citizen was under his protection.

So it only made sense that Rune had come here. It was a peculiar request. Normally the reports here consisted of dealing with desert bandits or lost items, however this mission was odd. It was a beast - that much was certain, not too out of the ordinary. There were several requests for the local wildlife to be dealt with. However, none was as strange as a beast with sapience.

Animals, save for a very small few hunted for more than just basic survival and nourishment. Some creatures, after years of living and gorging on ambient mana slowly become what is known as a "magical beast" or otherwise known as a "monster". They gain intelligence, the beginnings of proper empathy, and in the worst cases... an addiction to them. Some remain mischievous at beast but others... become something far more sinister.

And this being seemed to be the latter.

This mission was called out to not only guilds, but the Rune Knights as well. Not wholly common to be fair. This monster must have been plaguing these people for quite some time. The report spoke of this worm like beast that seemed to hunt for the sport of it. It would deliberately let some of it's victims live solely for the purpose of hunting them down and killing them. One such survivor has made the request to slay it - and thus here Rune was.

Traveling from the Capital to the middle of the desert was no easy task. It took several days of travel and would take several days to return once complete. However this quest was within his caliber and thus he took it without any fuss. 'Always seek to improve yourself' his father would often say. 'There is no better chance for improvement than a challenge.' His words resonated with Rune even now. And was one he took to heart completely.

While other green recruits shifted in their seats at the mere thought of taking down such a dangerous creature, Rune welcomed it. It would, after all, be a wonderful test to see where he stood at the moment. And as always, what he could do to improve with.

Had finally arrived at the Desert Village, Rune quickly and quietly made his way to the tavern, intent on his duty and nothing more. The man he was supposed to meet for this quest was waiting for him there hence his laser focus on the particular building. The other mage was also his ally in this little endeavor as his superiors had implied that one other person took up this quest.

Opening the double doors he made his way inside, sky blue eyes sharp and serious as he gazed at the occupants within the room. Eyeing the target he made his way over with an assured gait pausing in front of the table in which the man sat at, eating what looked to be the local specialty with a pitcher of water.

Carefully hiding his uneasiness of the Iguana meal behind a mask of indifference, Rune spoke up, quietly enough not to disturb the atmosphere but loud enough that the man in front of him could no doubt here him clearly.

"You are Solmar, correct? I am Rune Felcrest, a Rune Knight - sent from Crocus to aid you in the removal of the magical beast that has been terrorizing the area." He paused sizing the man up for a mere moment before speaking in a slightly less tense tone. "It is nice to make your acquaintance."

Sending a glance towards the new arrival that had set foot inside of the tavern, he momentarily quit eating for a second as he thought about what had just happened. Up until now, no one had ever known who he was or what his name was. When the man explained more about who he was and where he was from, he figured that it made sense to some extent. This guy, who was awkwardly also called Rune was a member of the Rune Knights, which was one of the Guilds that considered themselves to be a legal bunch. From what he had heard, they were also busy with doing some policing and making sure the cities and villages were safe, or at least that was the kind of thing Shane had been doing. Shane was one of the two Rune Knights he met prior to meeting Rune, which was likely also how his name had made its way to this new guy. Up until now, Solmar and Shane had managed to defeat a creature that called itself the god of the hunt, as well as a very powerful water elemental, so he figured it made sense that people knew his name back where the guy was from.

"Yeah, that's me, though I wasn't aware there was an actual job posted for that thing that's skulking out there. I was planning on just going out there and killing it myself, but if there is a bounty on its head, that just works out all the better for me."

Taking another bite of the lizard meat, he tore off part of the tail and offered it to the Rune Knight, figured he must have gotten hungry or thirsty after traveling so far through the desert to get here. Raising his hand towards the barkeep to get his attention, he pointed at the empty glass before holding up two fingers, implying that he should go and bring them a second one. Solmar was many things, though he was not a cheapskate and he wasn't lacking in morality either, which was why he figured he might as well share some food and water with the guy that seemed to plan on going with him into the desert to kill this creature. Truth be told, he had no idea what they were really hunting, though he figured that it was probably some kind of sand worm that seemed to be quite common in these parts.

"So, you said you were a Rune Knight, does that mean this is some job they took on as a Guild or is it something you came across on your own?"

Figuring it couldn't hurt to ask, Solmar was himself quite interested in the inner workings of Guilds as he had never really considered being in one himself. Some of the Guilds he had heard of during his travels had failed to match his expectations, considering how he had been doing their work himself for nearly half as much money. Hell, most of the time, all he really required as "payment" was a bed to sleep in for the night, something to eat and something to wash it down with. All of these things seemed like they were of the kind that just about anyone who had a roof over their head could provide him with, and were often more willing to part with than any actual jewels. That much was something he understood well, for even though he himself was without a house and had no real need for it due to his life as a wanderer, he knew that owning a house and just living somewhere could cost a lot. So, with him being the person he was, he wasn't above adjusting himself and the price of his actions.

    "The Journey Begins..."

Rune was curious, was this man as strong as he said he was? If he was powerful enough to defeat the beast without aide then why would he wait? Bounty or no, wouldn't it be prudent just to get rid of the monster and be done with it? There would be a lot less lives in danger if that was the case after all.

Perhaps the man was just boasting? It seemed to be the most logical of answers.

    "I see."

Not voicing his  true thoughts he politely declined the man's offer of the lizard's tail. Feeling a bit on the queasy side from the sight and smell alone. "Uhm... N-No thank you, I ate on my way here." He wasn't exactly lying - he had ate... the previous morning before arriving in the town.

He had some ration bars and a half of a drinking gourd on himself as well. He honestly didn't think he could eat anything at the moment. Nonetheless he couldn't help but feel rather flustered at the thoughtful gesture, a light blush dusted his face before he cleared his throat willing it away.

Just as a waitress came into the scene with another pitcher of water, Rune kindly asked if he could refill his flask in which the woman agreed to. Having screwed back on the cap as he continued listening to the man's words making sure to focus on both activities equally. Quite shocked that he didn't know of this stuff. He figured it was common knowledge, even to non-guild types!

"I'll spare you the inner workings and intricacies of the Rune Knights systems, and just say that yes, it's a job that was put out by the guild itself. I just so happened to come across it being of a lower rank I decided to give it a shot. The higher ups felt it was beneath them and my fellow peers thought it would be too difficult. So here I am."

He smiled slightly at Solmar before getting serious again. "Ah, so should we begin? If you're finished eating I believe it would be prudent to find this thing's usual haunting grounds and observe it before making a move."

He eyed the taller male inquisitively, wondering his input.

    "What do you think?"

Not really minding the fact that this rune knight did not seem interested in having a bite, he just raised his shoulders and placed the tail back on his plate. Finishing up the rest, he figured he could just take the tail with him and eat it on the go. Due to the juices inside of it, it would at the very least provide him with exactly what he needed out in the heat. Working down a few large gulps of water, he listened as Rune went on to explain a thing or two about how these missions worked for the rune knights. Huffing a bit as he heard the explanation, he figured that it made sense. All people cared about these days was how much money they would make off of it, people getting hurt was not much of a factor to them once they reached a certain amount of status. Swallowing the meat he had just chewed, he looked over his shoulder, looking the guy in the eye for a bit.

"Not surprising, guild folk rarely takes on jobs they considered to be beneath them. That's also why dozens of children died under the "watchful eyes" of the Silver Wolf in the Phoenix mountains. Government blamed the disappearances on the people and their practices… never expected a sentient monster to be the cause, and well over fifty kids paid the price for it.."

Turning his gaze back to his plate and his water, he reached out to it so they'd be able to get on their way. With one last gulp, he finished up what was left within the pitcher. Feeling that it was best to not say another word about it, he considered the rune knights to be among some of the good guys, though that was also because he hadn't yet met a single person from other guilds aside from Dies Irae or the Rune knights. Guessing that this guy had some guts to his name, he was going to make sure that this job was going to go smoothly so he'd be able to go back on his way and return to the guild. Maybe if he got to show the others how much it paid to help smaller villages such as these, others would stop scoffing at the less paying jobs for the sake of saving lives. Though it was most likely not going to be that easy to change the mindset of a guild, the least he could do was try.

"But you're right, we should go. I already asked around to see where most of the attacks have been located, so getting the thing to attack us should be easy. And when it does, we finish it off."

Grabbing the cooked iguana tail, he got up from his seat and made his way towards the front door. As he passed through it, the warm sun greeted him straight away, not really caring about giving him a moment's respite. Hanging the tail in a torch that was lit outside, he waited for the meat to get charred a bit. When it eventually caught fire, he kept walking further away from civilization and into the actual desert. Inhaling deeply, the fire that had latched onto the iguana meat got vacuumed into his mouth as he ate it. With a few big bites, he finished the iguana tail shortly after. Putting his hands together, he cracked his knuckles as he let his magic power flare a bit, sending a small shockwave through the sands. Letting everything down in the depths of the white sand know that a bigger prey had arrived, he continued by cracking his neck and looking back at the rune knight.

"Follow me, you'll be surprised how close to the village these attacks have transpired. Goes to show how little the authorities care for far-off places such as these."
