Angrily the blonde was stomping down the dirt road that lead to the specified pumpkin patch the note had told her about. Although the moist soil was muffling her step, the depths of the imprints left little to the imagination; this woman was well-beyond pissed. Only the soft mumbling added more proof of that to the situation. The reason as to why she was angry, you ask? Ever so trivial, but mostly that she found these requests just simply outrageous. Who in their right mind would address each and every guild -and whatever was beyond- to go pumpkin-picking in the local patches? 'For the sake of Halloween spirit', she'd heard someone say. It had made her snort. Yes. Ye good ol' Halloween spirit. Like last year, amirite? Nothing could beat those damned explosive candle-canines, and especially not the ones that had been chasing her back then on that damned night. And that too had started with an innocent request, so at this point she was all but pleased by it. It just screamed "I'm a trap!", and to be completely honest, it probably smelt like one too. She just couldn't actually smell it however, as some oh-so convenient cold had caught her by surprise. All that still lacked was that cutesy dark dust causing it. Gods forbid that shit came twirling down again.

But anyway, back to the present. Where Kitalpha, despite her dismay towards the atrocitious boldness of the request, was still complying to it by actually participating. Although she'd duly noted that she was 'very much doing this because someone asked her nicely, not because she liked it', or something along those lines. Stubborn girl she was. Truthfully she didn't truly mind that a random stranger had left parchments dictating where she needed to go for the pumpkins needed, as she hoped that she might actually be able to keep one for herself. Make something nice out of it. And regardless of whether she was actually allowed to keep one or not, she'd just sneakily drop one in her Treasury for later. A chill ran down her spine. "Ugh, why is it so damn cold out here?" she grumbled underneath her breath, shifting the half-torn shirt on her body. Her lack of clothing was definitely not the issue of her sudden cold streak, or so she believed. Never blame the armour. Said armour was simple; long grieves, tassets adorned with red cloth to cover her waist and thighs, and her right arm entirely covered by a layer of metallic gold. She wore a pair of black shorts underneath it, and a long-sleeved shirt torn from her abdomen down adorned her torso. Yes, she was the nutjob to wear shorts all year 'round if she had to. Today's dreary autumn day was no exception. Kitalpha halted for a moment and looked at the sky. Although clouded the sun was trying its best to pierce through the thick curtain of cumuli, and for a brief moment it actually succeeded. A ray of orange light covered the path she was walking, and she enjoyed the faint warmth from it before it disappeared again. By the look of it, she had an hour or two more till sundown tops. More than enough to take a few excessively large specimens and hightail it back to town, she reckoned. The pumpkin patch was within view from the point she'd stopped at, but she lingered for a while longer, staring at the sky.

A crow's cawing made her turn around. It stared at her in silence, only to caw again, this time louder. It's call echoed across the abandoned road, a strong gust suddenly blowing. Sand was pulled off the ground and spiraled into the sky, almost as if some unknown force was aiming for her eyes with it. Kitalpha growled and covered her face, deflecting some of the sand, but couldn't refrain it from getting into her eyes. It stung, and she clicked her tongue in annoyance as she tried to rub the sand out of her eyes, softly at first, but more violent the more the pain was spreading. Her eyes were tearing up by the time she got rid of most of it, and was left with a blurred vision as a result. Much to her surprise however the light too had faded. Out of nowhere, the sky had darkened. Keen eyes gazed up at the darkness, the blurred vision making it hard for her to see what was actually going on, but when the caw echoed across the path again, her body moved instinctively. Rather than dodging or side-stepping, the blonde ran. Not just hard, but as if her life depended on it. And as she did the air current changed and shifted; when she went right a surge followed to the right, and the same thing happened as she went left. A strange sound behind her that only got closer as she slowed down. And it seemed to be leading her to the pumpkin patch. Her instincts were roaring for her to run.

If only she could see properly. The blur was still present, but whenever she dared look back the darkness of the sky was following her ever so silently, aside from that strange noise. The crow had vanished, so there was no go-to. Only her instincts to rely on, her natural prowess, which was going haywire the closer she got to the pumpkin patch. Something was horribly wrong in this place. Now she was stuck between two instincts demanding her to run, but also to stop. And now she had to choose. Fast. And choose she did. Abruptly Kitalpha skidded to a halt, going from sprinting to a standstill in less than five meters, she turned, the tip of her grieves dug into the sand as they searched for grip. Once they found it, they pushed, and the blonde warrioress dashed back into the opposite direction; into the darkness following her. And as she did a strange red mist started forming around her, her crimson eyes slanted and feral, glowing. Something physically resisted her as she bashed into the darkness, but it didn't stop her from going in deeper. She could feel herself getting hit; softly, as if being grazed by silk, then painful and sharp as something tore at her skin. Kitalpha resisted and readied herself. Then, the spikes exploded around her.

Several dozens of spikes, thin, sturdy and sharp like oversized thorns erupted around her like a spiked cowl without hurting the caster. Something liquid ran down her bare arm, and the scent made her eyes glow even fiercer now her sight had finally returned. The darkness had been a flock of crows. The lack of cawing an instinct of her own. Now she was aware of what she saw, he could hear their screams as they struggled. Each and every of the dark-mattered spike impaled one or several of the black-feathered critters, entirely or partially. To those with a soft heart or stomach it was all but a sight they'd rather not lay eyes on. The crows that remained tried to attack her again among the spikes, but Kitalpha just snarled at them like a cornered wolf as a sphere of elementless magic formed in her palm. She crushed it, creating a shockwave that pushed the remaining critters away from her, and destroyed the spears until only dust remained. The crows fell to the floor lifelessly, while those that managed to survive hightailed it, their solemn cries echoing through the sky. Amidst the massacre Kitalpha stood panting, trying to restrain the shivering within her body. She hated using this magic. This bloodthirst that came with it. Before her, the field stretched out far. Shit was just only getting started.

A long time ago on Shadow Island, Nico could remember when he was always celebrating autumn’s festivities. In fact, he would say that it was his favorite time of the year. Of course, Halloween was an important part of those memories, but he could vividly remember raking up leaves and then tossing himself into them, sometimes sorting them leaves by shape and color. He could recall picking apples and then dipping them in caramel, making homemade apple cider, and sharing it with his neighbors. Sometimes he’d go on hayrides and other times he’d be driving the wagon that carried people. He could remember the taste and chill of the wind and how its dryness made his throat scratchy and nose runny, and he could remember walking home with his parents, grandmother, and little brother as they came back from stomping on grapes to make wine. On that part of Shadow Island, everything was well. But now, eight years later, this was obviously no longer the case. Mom and Dad’s backs weren’t facing him anymore, dimly lit in the lantern-light, Grandma wasn’t picking the leaves that fell out of his hair, and Milo wasn’t complaining in his ear about how cold it was. In fact, he spent every year since then working some odd job, alone. He didn’t know how to celebrate the season without them, so he always found someplace or some person who’d hire him to work in autumn festivals instead.

This year wasn’t any different. Pumpkin farmers all over the country were hiring in anticipation for the business they’d be having when people came pumpkin picking for the holidays. Surprisingly, Hosenka was included as well, despite having such little space for farming of any kind, so that’s where Nico was currently being employed.

He was told to be of general assistance to the people who came to pick pumpkins—helping people through the patch, answering questions, advertising other events the farmers were hosting—that kind of stuff. He was a people-person and was the type who could tolerate any sort of weather, even wearing shorts when it was cool out, so this job was something that seems to be made for him.

“Hmm. I guess I got a little lost, huh?” Nico said matter-of-factly, stopping and looking around to find that he was by himself. Nico had been working this job for many days already, but it was the first time he had found himself in the depths of the pumpkin patches all alone. He had two particularly large pumpkins—one tucked between each arm. One way or another, he had ended up helping pick pumpkins with an elderly couple and their grandchildren. One pumpkin turned to two, and he’d meandered through the patch distracted with an eagerness to help until he was no longer with the family he was helping. It was a harmless mistake and there would surely be no trouble in returning if he retraced his steps or followed the lights in the distance. There was a moment of silence after he commented on his situation, but soon the returned to his usual self, dripping with determination and some amount of passion. Ahhh! That Granny and those kids must be waiting for me to bring back the biggest pumpkins! I CAN’T LEAVE THEM HANGING!”

This was the plan, but things hardly ever go according to plan, right? As it turns out, Nico was not the only person finding themselves in the deeper end of the pumpkin patch. Someone—something approached, and whatever it was, it didn’t feel good. He didn’t see anything and he couldn’t smell anything either. Nico hadn’t known what was approaching but something deep within him, some instinctual instructed him to keep his guard up. To heighten his senses and brace himself for that something. He looked and looked but couldn’t lay his eyes upon a single thing! Where was it? What was it? His gaze on the patch was hard and sharp, but he didn’t feel prepared for what happened next. The change in scenery was abrupt and instantaneous. There was nothing he could do to stop himself from being engulfed in soft, pulsating black.

Agh! grunted Nico, feeling something peck him. He dropped his pumpkins to lunge at whatever he pecked him, feeling it launch away when his fist struck it. He’d then drop the other pumpkin so that both arms could cross over his face to protect it, peeking through the small gaps to stare into the darkness. “What is this?!” It was clear that whatever swarmed over him was not a cloud of darkness, but a mass of crows or some other blackbird, and he wasn’t the only one caught in its frenzy. Someone else was there—he just felt it! He couldn’t them or hear them in the noise of wings flapping and crows cawing, but they might need help! It wouldn’t be unlikely for it to be a child who wandered away from the group just like he did, and surely they were not equipped with the skills to fend off such a frenzied flock. He had to do something. . .!

His arm slowly began to be embellished with small cuts, something their beaks and talons finding their ways through the gaps of his mediocre guard to scratch his face, but he didn’t falter, only winced in an attempt to protect his eyes. “Hello?! Are you okay?!” Nico called out into the mass, hoping for an answer!

But instead of an answer, his toes grazed the blade of a sword. It was loosely planted in the soil in front of him, but he knew that it wasn’t there before. Someone had tossed it or thrown or placed it there, but who? Was it the person in the frenzy of blackbirds too? Regardless, after a brief moment of contemplating its location, he seized it with both hands and swung it into the flock several times as soon as he did. Several birds plummeted to the ground lifelessly, and soon the remaining blackbirds fluttered away and out of immediate danger. He had no experience in swordsmanship, but he’d take a blade over his fists any day under these circumstances!

When the black mass dissipated into a clear, grey sky, Nico could see clearly now. There was no sense of panic or fright or even frustration on his countenance, but an authentic sense of worry in watching the blackbirds fly away.

Nico sighed and scratched the back of his scalp. There were several black feathers sticking out of his brown hair. “What was that all about?” he said to no one in particular, looking at the pumpkins he dropped. They were relatively unscathed, thankfully, and his soft, friendly smile returned to his face. “They’re okay!” thought Nico. Unfortunately, the closure was extremely short-lived. The moment the word “okay” left his lips, he was abruptly reminded of the other person who was there with him. Now that he could see, he could finally find them!

HEY! Are you o—” Luckily, they stuck out like a sore thumb. It was a young woman who looked no more of a mess than he did, but she looked far more on edge than Nico could ever be. He was so surprised by her bloodlust that he paused mid-sentence, took a moment to behold her appearance, and then recontinued in a far quieter, somewhat more puzzled tone of voice. “—kay. . .?”

It made sense that she would be on edge like this, Nico supposed. Not everyone had the security of being level-headed during that sort of frenzy, and not everyone had the heart to smile so authenticly after such an incident as he could. He realized this, and the sunny, toothy smile returned to his face once more. He approached her with hesitation. “That was pretty scary, huh? Want to walk back together? It’s probably safer that way, and I think this is your sword, too!” Nico queried kindly, giving her a mild thumbs-up. But even then, their interactions were shortlived, for some greater beast had other plans for them.

    THUD!

Something enormous landed in front of them, and it was on an entirely different level from the flock of frenzied blackbirds from just now. It was a bipedal beast with the face, feet, and hands of a crow, but a body similar to that of a bodybuilding human. All of its muscles were bulging and its torso was the largest thing on its figure. It screamed the most awful, ear-shattering scream, and suddenly all of the friendliness in Nico’s complexion vanished and hardened. He was glaring at it with malice unlike him and so different from the sunniness from before, and all of it appearing in an instant, like the unobservable quickness of darkness settling into a room after the lights are flicked off. It was unsettling.

He didn’t say anything, and the beast attacked first. It was a standard punch followed by one of its ear-piercing screams, but it was greeted with the blade in its entirety. Nico hadn’t bothered to parry the fist or block it, but hold it up and let the fist swallow its metal in completion. The instead it did, he twisted it within the wound, repositioning it before using all of his strength to rip it out in a single upward motion, almost slicing the entire hand in half. If not for his amateur swordsmanship, the hand would’ve been sliced completely. Instead, he compensated the mediocre skill for the number of his strikes, stabbing and piercing the beast until it had been downed. But even after death, he kept on descending the blade upon face and chest until the blade had broke, murmuring things like “die” and “disgusting” under his breath like some dark recital. When the felt the blade crack, his hardened, unchanging expression softened back to normal, and the light returned to his blank, dead eyes.

Nico looked back at the woman, some strange, black liquid that could only be labeled as blood smeared across his hands and face. Nico smiled kindly again and gave her another thumbs-up. “You okay?” he continued smiling until an innocent and cute kind of apprehension settled on his eyebrows and eyes again, frowning a bewildered frown as he looked over the corpse he was standing on, “I wonder what’s happening. I hope everyone else is okay. . . we really need to get back, after all! There’s no telling what it’s looking like over by the farm!”

After realizing the gravity of the situation, Nico hopped off the corpse after pulling the blade from the beast, looking at it sympathetically before breaking into a mild panic. “Ahhh! This was your sword, right?! I’m sorry! I think I cracked it! I’ll fix it once this is all over, I promise!”

Post by Kitalpha Aurence 24th November 2019, 2:43 pm

In the darkness of the flock, somewhat before she'd unleashed her magic, she'd felt a presence. Not like the winged menaces around her, but something different that too seemed to disturb the crows. So she'd flung a sword towards the point, close to the ground so she wouldn't accidently mow down whomever was in there with her. Just imagine it being an innocent person turned into shish-kebab due to her actions. Now the remaining birds had gone she could finally see again, and noticed the brown-haired man near her, who was seemingly worried about her. Was she okay, he asked. Frankly she wanted to say no, that he kept away from her until she'd found her bearing again, but she couldn't even manage to speak any words as she just kept on panting. Shaking. From the corner of her eye she could see he was holding Durendal, and that calmed her as his words slowly registered to her raging mind. Calm down. Breathe. Come with him. Return. It’d be safer. Yes, probably. But any further chatter was cut short by the arrival of a giant, bulky bipedal beast. It smelled like those ravens, and instinctively she let out a growl. In the end she didn’t need to fight the beast it seemed, as the brown-haired stranger took it upon himself to deal with it, Durendal in hand. Kitalpha let it happen, closing her eyes to focus back on repressing the bloodlust trying to take hold of her. Trouble would be the least of their worries if Horama managed to break free through it. But as she focused her ears followed the fight as it went, it turned out to be horribly one-sided. This man had a curious side to him, it seemed. By the time he was done the blonde had repressed the bloodlust enough to open her eyes again, her breathing now stabilized and calm. Her body too had stopped shaking. And the man was looking at her with such an innocent face that the black blood splattered upon it was entirely out of place. So much even that it surprised her more than the black blood not triggering her bloodlust. ”I’m fine now, thank you for asking. And we probably should-” Kitalpha fell silent as she saw Durendal’s uneven surface and immediately closed the distance between them.

"Did you just-," she paused as she took the blade out of the man's hands, staring at it in horror. As if fate wished it so, the visible crack in the blade gave away under gravity's pressure, and snapped entirely, the second half unceremoniously dropping unto the floor. "D-did you just break Durendal? You fucking broke it?!" she exclaimed in disbelief gesturing at the broken sword's blade, utterly shattered. Even what remained had been severely damaged. Her prized possession. A legendary sword. Kaput. Molested by virgin hands into this unearthly state. Honestly, she could've cried right now. He'd fix this. Oh he better fix this. "You damn well bet your ass you'll fix this, or I'll have your gutssssss-" The last word came out fizzled and faint, the s dragged out and all. Behind the cheerful brown-haired man another beast had risen, in the form of a scarecrow lively flaunting about. "Ooooh nononono-" Kitalpha interrupted her threatening lecture-to-be, visibly annoyed by the appearance of the thing. the glare was ever-so apparent. "It's a fucking scarecrow again?!" That's it. She was just done at this point. The Universe had pulled this shit on her last year, and now they were gonna do it all over again? The scarecrow lashed out with its scythe to swing at both of them, but Kitalpha stepped in immediately, pulling Nico behind her and deflecting the scythe by kicking the wooden shaft, forcing the blade to go over their heads. A golden circle appeared behind her hand, and in a single smooth motion she pulled a large red spear from it, flinging it at the scarecrow as if it were a mere practice target. The 'mere practice target' was sent flying further into the field, struggling to stop its flight.

She huffed in disdain and turned back to face Nico. "Okay, so hold this-" she said, pushing the broken sword and its shards back into his hands. "And hold that thought. I'll be back after plucking that overly-pretentious stick of hayfever." In the spur of the moment she booped his nose. That was in fact supposed to be her just pointing at him to stay put, but she ended up being too closeby. She rolled with it. No time to worry over booping when she needed to take care of some rude supernatural beings.

Within moments she’d bridged the distance keeping her and the scarecrow seperated and lunged at it, grazing its body. It swung the scythe downward, but got parried by the red spear still protruding from its abdomen. She pulled, letting the shaft run through her hands until the speartip had come undone. Then, things went fast. She backstepped, crouching midway as the scythe was swung her way again, and lunged the dull end of the spear into the scarecrow’s face, following up by sweeping the thing off its feet. Only problem being that it cut right through the hay legs, and didn’t seem to bother the thing in the slightest. ”Weell, fu-” she jabbed at the face, piercing its eye, and when pulling it out was covered by strands of hay escaping the scarecrow’s body. The scythe came down again, and rolling to the side Kitalpha managed to dodge it, be it barely. Jumping back unto her feet she started rotating her spear around, slamming the scythe out of the way before proceeding to continuously slam the sharp end of her spear into the scarecrow like a tornado, until the hay and mighty scarecrow had been reduced to a heap of shredded clothing. Panting she leant back to look at her ‘work of art’, the spear stuck underneath her arm to support her. A job well done, even if she had to say so herself. She nodded, ready to turn around when one of the pumpkins moved. Kitalpha halted and stared at it. Was she just imagining that pumpkin moving…? Nope.

The orange vegetable seemed to be more than just a healthy veggie it seemed. When its eyes popped open, Kitalpha groaned and rolled her eyes. ”Really? Like really? What’s next, a thick fog rolling in while you pull out a fancy lantern to--” Her words weren’t cold or a thick fog appeared out of nowhere, while the Pumpkin Patch King pulled out his lantern and disappeared within the shadows of the mist, only visible by the light of his lantern. ”Okay, that’s it. I’m done. So fucking done with this shit right now. Next year I’m just staying fucking home!” As she spoke her last word her crimson spear was flung at the light with every inch of strength she could muster; and it hit true. The sound of chattering glass resonated as the light disappeared into the distance together with her spear. The blonde’s dislike for Halloween was growing with every minute she spent together with these Hallowed critters. Her crimson eyes were glowing vibrantly, their expression on “Done with this shit”-violent. Honestly, she wasn’t even bothered by the fact that the brown-haired man’s first impression of her would be these displays of violent frustration. That Royal Vegetable-face would meet with her fists, and those of the one and only Pumpkin King.

From her pocket she dug up a black key sporting the smallest of pumpkins at its end, and held it out in front of her. ”Heyo Captain Jack! We got ourselves an imposter at our hands, so come forth and show them who the real King is!” she said in a loud voice, making sure the Patch Lord and even Nico further away could hear what she was doing. Jack’s gate opened in a spiral of darkness, and the skeleton-made Pumpkin King stepped forth from it with an equally-annoyed look on his face. ”How many times do I have to tell ya kid, I ain’t no capt’n! I’m a king! Get it right, will ya?!” He retorted immediately, glaring at Kitalpha, who only gave him a big smirk in return while pointing at the mist. ”That’s where it’s at, though.” she said, and Jack turned, adjusting both his jacket and accent. ”Well then… I suppose tis time to show this miscreant who the true regent is. Let’s first get rid of this curtain of haze, shall we?” Jack snapped his fingers, and the mist disappeared, uncovering the Patch King to be only a few meters away from them. Both summoner and summoned King eyed the Patch King with contempt, each for their own reasons, but both sharing the desire to punch it in the face, which moments later they did. In complete synchronization both fists slammed into his face, making it stumble backwards. They then each followed up with a kick, pincering the living pumpkin between their legs. Patch King roared, lashing out at both of them with his claws. In time Jack managed to pull Kitalpha out of reach, while he himself got struck by one of the claws and grumbled. ”Watch out for those claws, child. There’s poison riddling those nails… really potent poison, at that.” He grunted, joining the blonde at a safer distance. She looked at her summon and nodded, which was all the Pumpkin King needed to get what Kitalpha wanted from him. ”Get ready then, we only have one shot at this. And if it hits me one more time I’m done for.” Jack noted. ”I know, so let’s make it count, captain.” She saw the Pumpkin King clench his fist while making small strangling gestures at her as she started running and grinned.

In his palms Jack summoned a pumpkin, while four others appeared simultaneously and rotated around him. One by one he threw them in such a way that they exploded right after the other, each and every single one of them hitting the Patch King where it hurt. The dust it had thrown up was Kitalpha’s cover as she closed in, drop-kicking it in the guts at full force. Almost immediately Jack followed up with an uppercut as he tried to stay on his feet, then Kitalpha came running again, using Jack’s back as a step-up to slam both knees into the Patch King’s face and crushing it underneath her as they came crashing down. Hardly able to see it started blindly clawing around him, and once again Jack came to his summoner’s aid by dragging him out of reach. Not amused by the gesture however, Kitalpha pulled herself loose again and kicked the fake king back unto the ground as it tried to get up. Patch King was steadily getting enough of the blonde and lashed out properly, and hit before Jack could react. The nails dug deep into her waist, and the power behind them enough to slam her into the ground after making her airborne for a few moments. Jack took her place while she was left gasping for breath, making sure the fake couldn’t get to her without getting through him. A punching battle ensued where the true Pumpkin King got a few solid hits in before he too was hit by the claws again. He growled as he disappeared in a cloud of dark fog, leaving Kitalpha with ample seconds to scramble back to her feet. ”Of all the things you could’ve done, that must’ve been the worst thing you could’ve chosen you fuckin’ piece of vegetable soup!” Her nails had made way for claws, and the aura around her for a split second roared as if a bloodthirsty beast had been chained within it. The Patch King staggered shortly, but it was all Kitalpha needed to get inside his personal space. Her knee quick yet forcefully found its way into Patchy’s groin, and much to her surprise the being bent double, letting out the saddest of whimpers she could’ve ever imagined hearing at that point. He dropped unto his knees, and Kitalpha being the helpful maiden she was, helped his face connect to the dirt. The heel of her armored boot dug into the Patch King’s face, leaning over it as her crimson eyes glared at it menacingly. ”Long live the “king”~” she taunted it a final time, pressing down until the pumpkin cracked underneath her foot. And thus ends the reign of the fake king.

On second thought, with the pumpkin mess now all over her leg, crushing it to death might not have been the best idea she had today. Trying to shake it off Kitalpha went to retrieve her spear and stored it back into her Treasury, while in the meanwhile picking up two rather solid-looking pumpkins on her way back to Nico. ”So, now that rude interruption’s taken care of… let’s do what you suggested and head back before more of those freaks turn up. I swear one more of those things and I’m gonna do some real crazy shit.” she paused, giving Nico a strange look. The strange look of realising you just said something really weird to someone you didn’t know. Crap. ”Anyway! We can discuss fixing Durendal later, so leggo!”
