Zachariah: Drunken Spirits Empty Zachariah: Drunken Spirits

    Post by Lemony.Boy 18th September 2019, 9:56 pm

    Job Description:

Zachariah wasn’t sure what to think of the most recent quest he’d picked up.  While he’d never thought spirits could be ‘drunk’ or any equivalent of the feeling, the Magic Council called for the ‘most esteemed mages’ to come and take care of the situation. And so, his journey began in Cedar, where he did his best to gather as much information as he could to prepare himself.  Apparently, a man possessed after a visit to Sakuramori had slaughtered his family.  Similarly, a knight had recently began assaulting civilians after a trip to the (in)famous Cherry Blossom Forest.  Zachariah had fond memories of that place, recalling how many times he nearly died in a single day on multiple occasions.  On a job, several manticores wanted to eat him alive while he attempted some population control.  Another time, when he decided to try training in Sakuramori, the mage was nearly crushed by a golem-like spirit and a larger-than-life orochi.  Needless to say, he was not psyched about returning to the rosy colored jungle.

Cedar reminded him of Hargeon town, which was not the best start to this quest.  Port cities tended to be humid and overwhelmingly fishy in certain areas, though Cedar was much quieter.  In comparison to Hargeon, Zachariah might not even consider it a true port.  The sun reflected off the water, painting the buildings a mosaic of dancing colors that caught his eye.  One of the few notable features of Cedar was the church, which Zachariah could see even as he crossed the bridge to enter.  He was greeted by knights on patrol, though as soon as he flashed them his guild mark, the signature Sabertooth tattoo, they nodded their heads and lead him to where he needed to be.

Both knights appeared to be of a similar age to him, possibly newly recruited.  They had boyish faces and a noticeable stutter in their march.  They led him through the paths towards the church, then to a building he presumed to be the knight’s headquarters.  It was built with a combination of wood and stone with pillars and iron fixtures inside.  The windows were open squares without glass, allowing the breeze and pungent port aromas to waft inside.  Two men were locked in cells in the back.  As he approached, Zachariah could hear their drunken stuttering and hiccups.  “These must be the men,” Zachariah stated, then leaned against the cell bars to get a better look at the husband who had slaughtered his family.

The man, who had been looking sad and sickly since Zachariah entered, not even bothering to make eye contact with the mage nor the knights behind him.  “You,” Zach announced, calling the man closer to him.  He slowly rose and trotted over to the bars dizzily.  Zachariah pulled him closer to the bars by the collar, then pulled out the Dagger of the Hatałii.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Asked the knights and the drunkard in unison.  One of the knights approached and seized him by the shoulder, though Zachariah calmly backed away.

“I apologize,” Zachariah said.  “But, I’m only performing a healing spell.”  The atmosphere calmed, and he touched the tip of the dagger gently to the man’s forehead.  He muttered an ancient desert chant and invoked the Yei'bi'chai for healing.  The edge of the blade glowed like a rainbow, causing the man’s eyes to flash.  The man appeared visibly healthier, clearer headed, but forced out a wispy spirit from his body.  Zachariah quickly summoned a Prism Dart and eradicated the spirit.  “Do you know where that spirit came from?” He questioned.

“What did you do to me?” the man groveled.

“I just healed you.  By curing your physical symptoms, I forced the spirit out of your body,” he explained.  “But do you know where that spirit came from?” he demanded this time

    “Sakuramori…” the man trembled.

Zach immediately turned to the knights.  “You cannot let anyone from this town go to Sakuramori,” he ordered. “Not until I return.  Tell your superiors that.  Something dangerous is lurking about.”  He moved onto the imprisoned knight and healed him as well, slaying the spirit in the same manner as the other. “Make sure you don’t try to engage any of the spirits yourselves.  You will fail.”

Zachariah quickly left town and hopped onto his horse, speeding to Sakuramori.  The scenery around him rapidly shifted, gradually becoming increasingly pink.  He now realized why the magic council had been seeking strong mages, as the issue was more than just topical.  Zachariah was sure some demonic force had been roaming, tempting poor victims and possessing them with drunkenness.  He had read about such spirits before, and now chided himself for not realizing sooner.  His horse strolled up to the outermost edge of the forest, but wouldn’t continue inside.  Around the brush and rolling off the stream was a dense mist, pink in color, only confirming Zachariah’s suspicions.

Animals moved about inside, though they seemed to be escaping a worse fate as well.  The trees and bushes waned in the breeze, their rustling getting increasingly louder as Zach entered the forest.  Light dimmed as he wandered further.  Though he knew not where he was heading, he had an idea of what to look for.  By the looks of the thickening mist and lack of fauna, he assured himself he was going the right way.  He came across a glowing stream and bent over to see deeper into the water.  Several fiery pink looking spirits dwelled beneath the surface and rose from beneath, surrounding him on all sides.  Though, these spirits were mere lightweights compared to what he expected.

“Scatterbeam!” he shouted, and pointed his finger outwards, casting a beam of light in several directions, dispersing the spirits.  He followed the stream, realizing now that this would be one of his longer jobs.

Zachariah: Drunken Spirits Empty Re: Zachariah: Drunken Spirits

    Post by Lemony.Boy 30th September 2019, 9:30 pm

The spirits didn’t follow him, but only multiplied as he followed the stream further.  He wasn’t sure how much farther it would be until he reached the center of it all, but an instinct deep inside him forced him to carry on.  The wisps were never ending, but weak and nearly inconsequential.  Though, the mist only thickened the further in he moved.  The combination of wisps and impenetrable fog eventually slowed his pace to a full stop, and he resorted to trying to fan the mist away to no avail.  Zachariah hesitantly walked over crunching leaves and branches, squinting his eyes to search for movement in the mist.  He felt something moving about the forest, much stronger than any of the wisps he had already fought.  He couldn’t identify it, but he could sure as hell feel its power.

He looked down at his feet and realize he couldn’t even see his hands in the mist.  The moon above illuminated only the canopy of trees and tall bushes, but did not allow him to see anything eye-level, only hear and sense magic.  Something began to run across the brush, inhumanly fast and much taller than he.  Though, Zachariah quickly thought of a solution to combat it.  “Jötunn Soul, Ymir!” he called out, and felt the ice take over his skin.  A crest of thick white fur sprouted on his chest, as well as a pair of tall stag antlers.  Ice encased his entire body, and he felt himself grow taller.  Runes formed on his chest, glowing through the mist.  The beast cut through the mist, right before his eyes, and aimed its horns at his chest.  With quick thinking and deftness, Zachariah locked horns with the beast, no, demon, as he could sense, and threw it into the dirt.  It was much faster than him, able to get behind him in nearly an instant.

In the demon’s mid-step, Zachariah cast the Cosmic Winter. He blew a gentle breeze over his hand that summoned a black gale, briefly dissipating the drunkard’s mist.  For a while, he could see the demon in its full form.  It was black like the night sky, eyeless, complete with horns that were the size of Zachariah’s legs.  It tripped over Zachariah’s wind, slashed and buffeted by ice and miniature comets.  With its remaining momentum, Zachariah caught the demon atop his antlers, impaling it overhead. No blood dripped from the beast, though.  He felt a foot plant on his head and spring into the air, and he realized he didn’t harm the creature at all.  It landed a hard jab to his jaw and nearly stabbed him with its horns.  In an instant, Zachariah dissipated his Take-Over form and decided to fight the creature with his Prismatic magic.  The Lightspeed Beatdown helped him to match the demon’s remarkable speed, though he could not fight it by hand.  He ducked and dodged, doing his best to avoid being hit.  In a small gap of time, he invoked the Golden Locks of Heimdallr and the Fury of the Stars, finally landing a solid blow to the monster.

With a Morning Star in each hand, he fought to get the upper hand.  One of his stars missed and burst in the distance, but the other seemed to sizzle against the demon’s skin.  While the creature recoiled, he stomped on the ground and summoned a sphere of glass around the creature.  “Mirror’s Edge!” he invoked, and fired a beam of light into the sphere.  The light multiplied and struck the demon from all angles, then dispersed into ambient light.  Zachariah expected the mist to immediately disappear, following the creature’s defeat, but it only built back up around him.  He couldn’t find the demon’s body following the bout, only hearing the skitter of feet and heavy breathing across the forest floor.

Zachariah felt lost, his only instinct to follow the stream further.  He heard the muffled sound of voices hanging in the air, but he wasn’t sure if it was his mind or something else roaming about the mist.  Several animals rushed passed him, making eye contact with the mage then escaping as far as they could see.  Zachariah could only hope to find the source of this evil soon, though he didn’t know where to start.  It seemed as if the demon would only come to him when it wanted to, which put him in an unlucky position.  The mist had really gotten to his head, too, as he was beginning to feel lost and hopeless and slightly intoxicated.  He wasn’t sure if it was hours or simply elongated minutes as he wandered about aimlessly.  What he was sure of, though, is that staying any longer than a night would be catastrophically detrimental to his health.  His mind wandered to morbid thoughts; blacking out on the forest floor, subject to the demon’s will.

He shook the thought away and continued forward.  More rustling echoed about the forest, and Zachariah kept his eyes peeled.  A clearing opened up in the mist, unveiling a ring of tall mushrooms that shaded overhead.  He squinted at a shining pink figure, wondering if the demon had come after him in a different form.  But these creatures felt much weaker, like a hum at a lower frequency than the demon’s.  They appeared slow, comprised of a gelatinous material in a humanoid shape.  Zachariah stuck a Prismatic Dart into its torso, though the green dart only stuck inside and revealed a horde behind it.  They suddenly began to pick up speed, throwing bits of gelatin at him that clung to his skin and traveled towards his face.  He peeled as much as he could from his body, using the Ultraviolent Flash to evaporate some of the excess, but eventually became overwhelmed.

He backed up into a tree and put his hands before him and shouting, “Voidbane!” casting the white burst across the forest.  The creatures stopped in their tracks, falling and crumbling to pieces.  More emerged from the darkness, however, and Zachariah realized the only way to get past them would be to go through them.  With uncertainty, he cast the Voidbane again and immobilized as many as he could, then summoned the Starlight Surfer to sail over their heads.  He flew across what must’ve been dozens of them, all hurling gelatinous balls at him until he reached another, safer clearing.  The pink mist still masked the air, though thinner in this area.  Zach felt a strong energy again, pulsating throughout the woods.

He could feel the demon waiting for him again, somewhere nearby.  Its breathing filled the air, though Zachariah just couldn’t see it yet.

Zachariah: Drunken Spirits Empty Re: Zachariah: Drunken Spirits

    Post by Lemony.Boy 27th October 2019, 5:06 pm

To lighten the area further, Zachariah tossed a Morning Star straight up into the air and willed it to burst.  Orange light flooded the forest floor like a firework, and Zachariah caught a glimpse of the demon hiding behind a tree trunk before dashing further into the darkness.  He tossed another Morning Star into the sky again and saw several demons in the trees, surrounding him.  Immediately, he prepared himself to engage, taking several blows at once.  He counted seven demons from each of the times he was struck and a sudden pang of fear radiated throughout his body.  He wasn’t sure how to handle so many light-footed enemies at once.  His body became surrounded by a rainbow film and star-like skin.  His hair glowed bright white, and halos descended just above his ears.  The Runes surrounded him, granting him strength and in turn, confidence.  The demons seemed to wait for his move, and allowed him to equip the Bifrost blade before starting.

He simply shut his eyes and awaited the incoming onslaught.  The blade seemed to do the work for him, cutting through everything that attempted to hit him.  While he couldn’t see the technique in action, the Realm Cutter protected him from every angle.  He could feel the blade move through space, cutting into the demon’s flesh.  One of the demons struck him in the jaw, and he returned with a sharp kick to the creature’s chest.  He then planted the sword into the creature and forcefully launched it into the dirt.  Though, he sensed a new strength in the demons that he didn’t notice before.  A wave of pink made its way towards him, but he absorbed it all into the Bifrost blade and charged back.  The blade shined with fiery light and unleashed a colored flame throughout the clearing.  Three of the demons faded away, leaving only three more.  The Lotus Eater ability left behind simmering cinders that unveiled some of the forest.

The demons moved with unbelievable speed, too fast for Zachariah to swing at full strength.  Their strikes were much more painful and unified than the last, as if the death of a few of them increased their latent abilities.  It was then that Zachariah had an epiphany; the demon could split itself into multiple pieces, dividing its strength up.  He staggered back, the blade escaping his hands and eyed the creatures with contempt.  His fingers extended, and three Spectral Drills sailed throughout the forest, hunting down each of the demons as they encircled him.  They chased, shattering each branch and thin tree trunk until the demon was face to face with him, now in a single, coherent form.  It leapt into the air, leading the drills back towards Zachariah.  He smirked and dove out of the way, retrieving the Bifrost blade and charging up the Lotus Eater once again.

The demon returned to face him once again, not realizing the Bifrost Blade had been empowered and effectively sharpened.  It swung its claws and horns like they were swords themselves, filling the valley with a concert of clings and loud clangs.  Each strike seemed to burn the demon’s skin and horns, though it pressed on.  Zachariah fought until his forearms cramped and his shoulders ached, though he knew that fighting the demon would be a battle of wits and mental perseverance.  The demon seemed to be losing speed too, at only half of its full potential.  Its strikes eventually slowed, while Zachariah’s only gained speed.  He began to notice gaps in the creature’s attacks, and worked to expand them.  Each gap became longer and longer due to his exploits, and he eventually found enough time to land a full-powered Lotus Eater onto the demon.  Rainbow fire engulfed the demon and filled the entire province with warm light.  The creature shrieked and fell to its knees, looking into Zachariah’s eyes and laughing before disintegrating into the air.

Zachariah sighed, praying the drunken mist would finally disappear, but everything remained the same.  “No…” he scorned, squinting his eyes at the atmosphere, waiting for it to clear up.  He sensed for the demon once again and found its faint presence.  Although far away, he could feel that it was barely at a fourth of its original power now.  So, Zachariah picked himself back up and sailed up above the trees on the Starlight Surfer, resting his feet and examining the horizon.  Although the mist was impenetrable, he searched for rustles in the canopy and disturbed fauna.  Manticores flew from the edges of the forest, into caves on the outskirts of Sakuramori.  To aid himself, Zachariah summoned a smaller version of the birds Hugin and Munin.  From the sky above descended a raven-sized version of the typically colossal predators.  Their crystal bodies glowed, and the gentle flapping of their wings blew cool, refreshing air onto Zachariah’s skin.

The half that resembled Hugin glowed red, while the half that resembled Munin glowed blue.  Zachariah’s eyes began to glow as well from the Interconnection spell, allowing him to see through their eyes as they searched.  “Go,” he ordered, and the birds split and circled the forest, then entered.  From above, Zachariah could see the red and blue glow in the pink mist and did his best to see everything happening inside.  The mist was much thinner now, and he could almost see clearly through the forest.  Hugin and Munin passed through small flocks of drunken wisps and the occasional gelatinous mass, but he could not find the demon.  As the birds neared the center of the forest, an alarming number of gelatinous masses collected together, and the birds paused for Zachariah to get a better look at it.  Its height was gradually climbing to the top of the forest, but its head didn’t peak through the leaves just yet.  “What in the hell…” he thought aloud, then called to the birds, “search through the caves.”

The birds joined back up and made their way towards the outskirts, following a quick moving black figure.  “Gotcha,” Zachariah said, and dismissed Hugin and Munin back to their realm.  The pair flew up into the sky and disappeared with a satisfying twinkle.  Zachariah found the demon once again and chased after it atop the Starlight Surfer.  While it hadn’t noticed him just yet, Zachariah used the Scatterbeam to disrupt its run.  Several lazers struck the terrain, striking every possible place it might step.  It tripped over and fell onto its back, though rolled out of the way before Zachariah could stab it.  “How do you keep escaping me!?” he questioned, and swung violently trying to slay the demon.  The Realm Cutter sliced through every imaginable direction, through space itself it seemed, but the demon was minorly injured.

Even with the Lightspeed Beatdown activated, Zachariah barely matched the demon’s incredible speed.  Zachariah was forced to move faster than he had ever moved before, but felt he needed to be even lighter on his feet, literally.  So, he deployed an idea he had only practiced in theory.  With a flex of his fist, he summoned a pair of miniature Starlight Surfers underfoot and levitated off the ground.  The demon swung its claw at him, but he evaded with a somersault and landed mid-air.  His knee connected with the demon’s face per the Runes, which allowed his physical attacks to connect with intangible foes. The demon seemed to be caught off guard, allowing Zachariah to land a downward strike of the blade.

Before he could process, he was sent flying into a boulder.  Zachariah did his best to regain balance, but slammed into the rocks and struggled to keep his eyes open.  The demon had a wide slash across its face and body, but now glowed cherry red with teeth like a tiger’s.  A flash of grey light appeared before him, and the next thing he knew he was that he was knocked out.

The demon dragged him over the river, sure not to drop him into the cold water so as to wake him up.  It slung his limp body over its shoulder and cleared a path through the mist, leading straight towards the collection of gelatinous mass.  Zachariah faded in and out of consciousness, trying to free himself each time he awoke.  He did his best to grip the Dagger of the Hatałii and heal himself, but couldn’t find the strength to.  Though, it seemed as if he wasn’t the only one in the forest trying to exterminate the demon.  A manticore the size of a fully grown oak tree rammed the two of them and freed Zachariah.  While the creature was considerably weaker than the demon, even after its transformation, the distraction gave Zachariah enough time to heal himself with the invocation of the Yei'bi'chai.  His head cleared, though the minor throbbing pain remained.  He healed his back, too, and arms, then returned to the fight.  The manticore fended for itself, though the demon’s sharp claws and antlers quickly tore it apart.

Atop the Starlight Surfer, Zachariah channeled the power of the nine realms and transformed into the Aesir god Heimdallr.  He summoned the Coyote Claw through the Dagger of the Hatałii and deepened the demon’s cut, though it seemed to grow in strength the more it bled.  By now, it was much too fast for Zachariah to combat under normal conditions.  Even with the Starlight Surfer underfoot and the Lightspeed Beatdown, he still found himself taking a lot of damage.  The demon chased him closer towards the gelatinous mass, but by then Zachariah had already formed a masterful plan.  He conserved his magic as the combatants soared through the forest and did his best to take the least amount of damage possible.  At the moment, he was waiting for the right moment to retaliate.  The demon attacked with mainly slashes of its claws and horns, but all Zachariah needed was a strong enough kick to increase the distance between them.

Tree branches and thorny bushes scuffed his clothes and body, but victory was in sight.  He dipped his head back and summoned the Spatial Reflector just behind the gelatinous creature.  It was nearly invisible in the night, but he was sure it was there.  In his brief vulnerability, the demon unleashed a powerful kick.  Zachariah guarded, and used the force to propel himself faster through the air.  “Don’t fail me now,” he prayed, and superheated the light around himself to boil a tunnel through the gelatin.  The demon didn’t follow him through, but it didn’t matter, Zachariah had it in his clutches.  The demon’s bright red form leapt over the gelatin, right into Zachariah’s trap.  Zachariah extended both arms and stretched out his fingertips, channeling light into an even more powerful Voidbane.  The demon whinnied and shielded its eyes.  Zachariah didn’t let up, pouring out more and more light until he was sure all of Fiore was lit.

Eventually, his power waned, as did his Aesir form.  The demon’s body was nowhere to be seen, nor could Zach sense its aura anywhere nearby.  The mist gradually began to disperse, unveiling a tall, stone mass.  The once gelatinous being was now lifeless, and collapsed like a pillar of salt.  Zachariah took a deep breath and knelt for a while, resting his body.  His magic slowly but surely replenished with each inhale and exhale.

He returned to the entrance of the forest and whistled for his horse.  By now, the sun was rising and Zachariah wondered exactly how long he’d been fighting.  As he approached Cedar once again, he noticed the town was even quieter, if such a feat was even possible.  Very few guards patrolled the borders, but the two young knights spotted him and immediately ran to his side.  They caught him just before he collapsed, and brought him to a ward set up in the plaza of the town.

“We’re so glad you’re back.  We saw a bright light and thought you died,” one of the knights breathlessly exclaimed. “Almost everyone has been affected now.  They all have headaches like they’re...hungover.”

“Well, everything should be getting better soon,” he explained.  “I managed to kill the demon that was behind all this.”

“That’s...that’s great!” the knight said, relief painting his face.  “So...no more people wandering out and killing their families anymore?”

Zachariah furrowed his eyebrows, but decided not to question the knight’s odd eagerness.  “Yeah...no more of that.”

“But can you help us treat everyone? There was violence in the middle of the night, a lot of people were injured in a huge bar fight.”

Zachariah nodded his head and followed the knights towards the white tent that served as their ward.  The youngest people maintained the most injuries, calling Zachariah’s attention first.  He unveiled the Dagger of the Hatałii and told them not to worry.  There were a few teenagers with scrapes and bruises, others with slashes that looked as if they were still bleeding.  Zachariah cautiously came closer and touched the wounds with his knife.  The wounds came to a close, and he suddenly realized how tired he was.  The more he viewed the injuries that lined up before him, the more he realized how little energy he had.  Though, he felt a warm hand on his shoulder and a rush of energy throughout his body.  He stared up at one of the knights behind him.  “You...you know magic?”

The knight raised a finger to his lips, shushing Zach.  “Just a few healing spells.  But you can’t tell anyone else.  They might send me to join the Rune Knights.”

Zachariah nodded his head.  “Alright...just help me help all of these people, too...so many people are injured still.”

“I know,” the boy said. “I did my best by myself, but I’m only one man...”

Zachariah sighed in reply, doing his best to keep it together.  He bandaged what injuries he could, only resorting to using the invocation of the Yei'bi'chai for the most extreme of wounds.  As he walked about the ward, he noticed the buildings that were scorched and others that had their doors torn off.  He tried to pay no mind to it, but couldn’t help but blame himself.  Perhaps engaging the demon caused the afflicted people to have outbursts of rage.  Though, he figured it was beyond his control.  After each person he patched up and healed, a new bead of sweat formed on his head, and he found himself worn out long before he finished the job.  The boy helping him seemed just as worn out as well, if not more.  If it weren’t for his support, Zachariah might not have been able to succeed.

    “Thank you,” Zachariah mentioned.

    “No, thank you,” he sighed.

“Say...what is your name?” Zachariah inquired.

    “Ezekiel...Ezekiel Morris.”
