Shane walked through the sprawling hallways of the Royal Castle, clad in his neatly pressed Rune Knights uniform. He had been informed that the Rune Knights weren’t the only ones participating in this mission. The aid of other guilds had been employed as well, explaining the number of plain-clothed personnel wandering around the place. Most of them, however, were heading in the same direction as he was, their faces one of seriousness, as it was on Shane’s. This was his first time in the Royal Castle, and he had to keep his eyes focused in front of him instead of wandering around the place, marveling at how luxurious the place was.
However, the man had also memorized the layout of the building as he moved within it. It didn’t take long for him and the rest of the crowd to arrive at the office of the castle’s head clerk. Shane raised an eyebrow as he looked around the room, coolly observing at how large the head clerk’s office was compared to his own office back in the Rune Knight’s headquarters. Hell, even Serilda, the Field Marshall of the Rune Knights had a smaller office than this.
As they entered, the head clerk, a thin man with a mousy face and slicked black hair that looked like it hadn’t been washed for days. However, he was a tall and lanky man. The man stood up with an irritated expression on his face, displeased at them for some reason that Shane didn’t know and didn’t care to find out. He held his hands together, a small gap between his palm while his fingertips touched.
“My name is Parakee Fontagro, the head clerk of the Royal Castle. I will need your attention to the map here please,” the man known as Parakee spoke up, in a surprisingly deep voice. There was a slight hunch in his posture, but the man straightened up when he was in front of a map pinned to the wall. “This is the layout of the Royal Castle. It would do you good to remember the layout, as we don’t know how the attack will take place or how it will even start, so you might need to split up and move around the entire castle.”
“Now, to the core of this. The Royal Castle received a threat three days ago, warning of an impending battle that will happen today. It was sent by a disgraced mage, who goes by the name of Bakkarn, once a politician of Fiore. He lost his standing when his fellow politicians tried to stop his plots, kicking him out of the council. As a result, this man has now sworn vengeance against the Royal Castle and the politicians within it. The man used to be a very powerful summoner and word has it that he has received an artifact capable of boosting his magical powers. That seems to be the source of his confidence behind this attack. As such, the Royal Castle hopes that you will be able to pool your efforts and face this threat head-on. Rest assured that the Council will arrange for the necessary rewards for this help you have extended.”
“That’s all?” Shane asked, looking at the head clerk, expecting more information from the man. Fontagro looked at Shane with a very look of disdain on his face, and then made to ignore his question.
“For now, you will all be gathering in the front area of the Royal Castle, where we expect Bakkarn to launch his assault from,” Fontagro remarked, before resuming his seat at his desk again. There was a murmur of voices as the other mages discussed among themselves. A few of them moved forwards towards the map on the wall, doing as what Fontagro had suggested, that they familiarize themselves with the castle layout.
