SUZUKI
Flat, rocky earth beneath the sweaty foot soles of officers in uniform. A hot summerlike sun burning the ground beneath it even though it was spring. The distant, thunderous roar of a waterfall crashing into the pool below and pulsating with eels and the like. It was much like a textbook image of some boot camp—but it wasn't. There were small packs of men and women who crowded against a cliffside, peering over it with some eyes in awe and others ominously fixed. But all of them were careful not to lose their step. Each of these persons-in-uniform wielded distinct pendants to the Rune Knights, all of them officers in both their Combat Corps and Special Operations divisions. They were certainly far from Era, their main headquarters, so one might've asked why these officers congregated here on such a blistering hot day?
The answer was simplistic but cruel, still. Their commanding officers had organized the eventual inclusion of squadrons but needed, like all things, to put it through trials, and it just so happened that the redheaded Private Chiyuki Suzuki and a handful of other Rune Knight officers were chosen for the trial. But it wasn't as simple as that. The objective was to see how officers from S.O (Special Operations) and C.C (Combat Corps) could cooperate together in integrated teams. They would scale and tread through the Serene Cliffs and face against its natural hazards to best view this. Everyone was given standard equipment, and the trials were just about to begin.
Doppo wasn't happy to have been picked for an all-day assignment but wasn't quite unhappy either. In fact, he was more anxious than anything. Recently, had had taken up an interest in cyber-suits, or suits that were so technologically advanced that they were able to be compared with most magics. He ended up being able to acquire the parts to build one as best he could, and today was a perfect opportunity to test it out. Having grown up in Motor City, he was confident that there was nothing essentially wrong about the suit, but he was anxious anyway. He also acquired an arsenal of weapons to pick from, but he geared it all in a way that it'd be more supportive than anything else. He greatly began to anticipate the results.
Meanwhile, he stood there in his uniform, waiting for instruction. Out of about two dozen men and women, they were all organized into groups of three or four, give or take. His face drooped like the sun was melting it, and sighed deeply into the hot spring air. It didn't take long before the knights began to make a competition out of it—who would be the first squadron to get to destination? Who'd be the last? Who'd defeat the most obstacles? Doppo wasn't very competitive himself, but he didn't dislike watching competition. Or, so he thought.
Like many instances, the officers who were overseeing the trials always enjoyed a good show, so one of them offered a handsome some of money to whichever squadron who won any of those titles. Suddenly, the chitchat became thunderous roars of lionlike war cries. Doppo watched in awe of both them and and reward. He looked to his squadron and pointed to the boasting men and women, ". . . So . . .?" he rumbled. He could never deny money from anyone, you know! He could buy himself two new sweaters with that pay, he'd think!
"Two minutes until we begin. Get ready!" some woman over a loudspeaker announced. Many of the squadrons began to get into their starting positions like track runners at the beginning of a race. Doppo watched them all with nonchalance.
