With all the jobs she had already done, doing something easy, such as picking a flower, was easy for Mai to take care of. When she had gone to meet up with the shop that requested the job, they were concerned about, as they put it, "a little kid going into a scary forest for our shop." Mai was used to the wilds. Before Papa disappeared, they exclusively lived in the wilds. Forests like this were no problem for Mai. If anything, she at least could rely on her magic prowess to scare away any beasts, should they attack. Papa had taught her that her smell was usually enough to ward off beasts, but it was far from fool-proof.
Nonetheless, she thought little of it. There was nothing much to it, in honesty. Compared to saving a town or stopping an assassination, picking a flower would be nothing. Even if monsters came towards her, Mai had already fought off far more than that with Sabertooth and had even fought off more alongside Papa.
The shop owners knew where the flower would be found, so Mai would not have had to have wasted time with searching. All she had to do was get there and pick the flower. They warned about wolves patrolling the area, but Mai still was relaxed on her journey. The smells of the forest were still familiar to her, so she enjoyed her time making her way towards the grotto where these flowers grew. It was an open area in the trees, the light shining in through the canopy. A faint smell of fresh-fallen rain floated in the air. Just as they had said, a few of the flowers were sitting in the light, ready to be picked. Mai clutched the basket in her hands, whistling to herself as she skipped over to the flowers. As she plucked the first one, however, an unfamiliar scent wafted into her nose and she heard the rustling of leaves beside her.
