…what had happened here? Yuzuki slowly let herself fall to the ground, landing on one knee as she observed her surroundings. The town was desolate, barren, as though some great force had plowed through and consumed any vestige of life that might have existed otherwise. As a gentle breeze coasted through the dust-laden air, the semi-fey flinched, feeling a strange foreign sensation in the toxic wind. She was in a dangerous place – that much was evident. Tugging a ratty old scarf out of her equally worn-out backpack, Yuzuki wrapped it tightly around her face. Stretching her mind out, the semi-fey desperately searched for some sign of life. But besides the low stirring of bacteria, there was nothing. Not a single rustle of grass, not a single chirp of birds.
Where had she ended up this time, and how had she never found this place before? Yuzuki slowly pushed herself up to her feet, and looked around, all senses on alert. Although she could sense no life about her, she knew from experience that it was often the non-living menaces that were most deadly. Without a life force to worry about, such monstrosities had less at stake and were dreadful opponents. Yet, despite her body screaming to get out of there, Yuzuki heeded it not. Instead, she threw up an invisible coat of magical armor around herself, protecting her body from the toxic chemical residue that seemed to be all that existed here. With the necessary equipment, she could now continue her investigation safely.
The air was thick with dust, and even with the protection of her magic, Yuzuki found herself instinctively squinting to avoid the sharp sting of the particles. The buildings appeared to have once been of high quality, strong brick walls rising up to meet the sky. Yet none of their former majesty remained, replaced by porous markings that riddled the material like a plague.
The semi-fey shuddered, and rubbed her shoulders in discomfort. Feeling oddly alone all of a sudden, she raised her voice, trying to ensure it didn’t shake – “Hello? Is anyone out there?” The query echoed across the buildings, and a frown crossed her face as she realized the idiocy of what she had done. “Goddamn wasteland…”
