    "JERICHO"
    410/1,500 words || @aeluri @Diana Winchester|| job info/job sign-up || Darkies just wanna have fun~

It was a bright and sunny day in the mysterious woods of Sakuramori, where the cherry blossoms were always in bloom and, despite the scorching summer heat, never wilted in the sun's rays. No one lived in Sakuramori but that never stopped people from traversing within—or even enjoying a summer festival!

It was true—people from villages and towns nearby have been meticulously planning to celebrate the summer season in this very forest, undisturbed by everything else and blessed with a scenic place to sell their grilled fish and Midian takoyaki. It was also the perfect place for criminals like Ahote to go to celebrate the festivities without interruption from the Rune Knights or bounty hunters. The high and evergreen groves of Sakuramori's trees veiled them from both the sunlight and prying eyes of the Magic Council!

Ahote had always wanted to go to a festival. He could only vaguely recall one from his youth, but that wasn't enough to satisfy him. He was tired of the bloodshed and violence from his missions! He, Aeluri, and Diana all needed to enjoy themselves in other ways that were less taxing on the body and more delightful. Or, so he thought.

Truthfully, Ahote looked like he had been possessed by death. His hair was no longer the unkempt, dry, white mess it once was and his golden eyes returning to its original rich hazel hue—he had temporarily sustained this form, his original form, for some days now with careful planning, but looked like death regardless! The summer sunshine weighed on his shoulders like lead, him finding solace only in the shade of his floppy straw hat atop his head, decorated with sunflowers and was overall a very feminine appearing article.

Ahote meandered down the forest path in a ghoulish stupor. Despite moving the slowest in the group, he was ahead of them by only some footsteps.

"Ahh. . . this is killing me. . ." Ahote groaned painfully with a face that looked like it would melt off his body any second now, "Are we almost there. . .?" he'd ask, unaware the festival was in the near distance ahead of them.

It wasn't the summer heat that made him feel so fatigued—but the strange magical presence over the land! He wasn't entirely aware of the intereference and many of the people they've crossed on their way to the festival seemed ignorantly unaffected by it, but he felt its effect most gruesomely!

Aeluri could hardly focus on the trail ahead or the two mages on either side of her. Head pounding, muscles aching. Black locks were left unusually unkempt. Her outfit consisted of shorts and a comfortable shirt. Eyelids drooped over exhausted mismatching eyes. Aeluri looked out of her element. Was she sick? Defeated? Beat up? The summoner barely even knew herself. Jericho had requested that they trek into Sakuramori to partake in summer solstice events. Reluctant was her agreement, but what harm could it do?

    A lot, apparently.

That morning she had woken up with the symptoms of a nasty hangover, yet she hadn’t had hardly anything to drink the night before. Alcohol tolerance was a particularly useful skill to have. The hangover was like the ones she had experienced when she started drinking but had long since overcome. It was a struggle to get out of bed. The sheets just seemed to consume her in their grasp. Getting on with the day had felt impossible. Her promise of accompaniment to Jerry tugged at the back of her mind, so she had groggily accepted her fate of suffering.

Aeluri couldn’t help but worry that she was sick or something. The symptoms had seemed to surface overnight with no warning. Upon meeting up with Jericho and Stiletto, she realized it wasn’t just her problem. The man looked like he had died and was a ghost haunting Earthland. Incredibly dark rings lay under his eyes and his shoulders slumped in a haunting stupor.

So here the three trekked, approaching the festival area in the heart of Sakuramori. Games, food, trinkets, and fun awaited them. Fun. Aeluri didn’t even know what fun was anymore. Certainly not strong smells and screaming children. Her nose wrinkled at the thought and a growl left her chest. Stiletto and Jerry may need to hold her back from lashing out at those who increased her headache.

She noticed a glowing light from behind a cluster of freakishly large mushrooms. Sakuramori always had the weirdest creatures and plants, but curiosity got the best of her despite her exhausted state. Approaching from off the trail, the summoner noticed an… ember? “What is an ember doing out here?” she muttered to herself, glancing around in search of a fire or source. Nothing caught her eye. The moment she turned to observe it again, the ember burst into pieces and out from the middle flew four tiny fairy-looking creatures. They exploded straight towards Aeluri, poking her face and giggling. Shit! she swore as stumbled steps brought her back to her guildmates. “Someone get these little pests off of me!”

    -Sakuramori-

Wearing a green long-sleeved shirt and khaki pants with brown boots, Stiletto was not the height of fashion but was ready for the Midsummer Festival in Sakuramori. The town was festooned with bright colors, food vendor stands, and numerous souvenir stands all hawking their wares to a public which was eager to buy. She was walking just behind The Black Cat and Jericho when some red faeries who were able to catch fire at will started harassing The Black Cat near a cluster of mushrooms that were of abnormal size. This was an unforeseen complication in what had been a good day up to this point... Stiletto was sure than

The Black Cat looked and acted like she had been suffering from a hangover and thus was not in the best of moods when the diminutive creatures showed up for their idea of fun. The dark-haired guild member made a flustered call for help in dealing with the creatures in a timely manner. Stiletto looked around and made sure that no one was watching, then brought out her Suppressed Submachine Gun and took careful aim at the first of them. Once she had her aim on it and it was away from her guildmate's face and head, she fired a Three-Round Burst that hit the fiery fairy and caused it to squeak before vanishing in a puff of fire. The first fairy was down and no one in Sakuramori was the wiser thanks to the weapon's suppressor.

The fairy's three partners did not take kindly to Stiletto's violent intervention and clenched their tiny fists, then ignited and charged towards the blonde. Stiletto rushed back a short distance to keep The Black Cat and Jericho out of the line of fire. Once there was nothing between her and her targets other than another cluster of giant mushrooms in the distance, Stiletto aimed and fired another Three-Round Burst that defeated the second fairy. The third flew straight through the puff of flame its friend had left and came towards the mage with fists raised in anger.

Stiletto stood her ground and let the fairy draw a little closer before firing another Three-Round Burst that hit its mark and got rid of another of the quartet of tiny troublemakers. Now only one was left. Upon destruction of the third fairy the fourth one halted its charge in mid-air and looked at the blonde with a small but noticeable expression of fear on its equally small face. Stiletto took this chance to blast it out of the air with a fourth Three-Round Burst and it disappeared in a puff of flame. All four were now gone and no one in town knew there had even been a fight.

Stiletto dispelled her weapon and walked over to rejoin The Black Cat and Jericho.

    "Problem solved." Stiletto said laconically.

The trio of the hidden sorcerers had not even arrived at the festival before the creatures of summer accosted them, or more specifically, The Black Cat. She seemed agonized and terribly infuriated with the faeries' pestering, as anyone would be. But Ahote was far too surprised to do anything before Stiletto whipped out her guns.

The hazel-eyed man raised a single finger in an attempt to garner Stiletto's attention, but this all seemed impossible as she quickly rose to the occasion to remove the threats before any lick of reason could deter her to do otherwise. "Maybe this is all a bit unecessary—"
The final squeaks of the first fairy abruptly interrupted his comments before shrinking into nothing.
    "Hey, Stilletto—"
The screech of another intruded on him again in its moments before what everyone assumed was death.
    "Stillet—"
And another, continuing until all four faeries were no more. Ahote's pleas were quieter and said more sheepishly by this point, on his knees devasted about the tragic deaths of the four faeries. He hung his head in weary defeat before looking between The Black Cat and Stiletto with teary, disappointed eyes.
"There's not even a corpse to leave behind. . . how are we supposed to talk to them if she killed them all?" the necromancer grieved in trembling indignation and childlike sadness. But his devastation would not last long before the trio took the road again.

They finally trudged their way into the festival area, Ahote still burdened with his unusual fatigue but determined to keep Stiletto and The Black Cat from massacring everything with a pulse during their day out together. As they walked in, the festival really held true to everything the brown-haired man had seen up until this point. There were concession stands with a litany of street food to dine on, games with umbrellas of stuffed animals displayed above them, and children running around with toys in their hands. It really looked like a festival straight from a picture book!

But there in the nearest distance was a game that instantly caught his eye—a ring toss led by two humanoid creatures that radiated summer spirit. And in the very center, a golden bottle! Ahote's eyes lit up the moment he saw it and hastily meandered down the road despite his fatigue. With bright eyes, he pointed at the two creatures as if accusing them of something.

"You two there," Ahote would call to them as quietly as he could, the creatures looking at him curiously, "is this the rumored ring toss? Is it true that something happens if you land on a specific bottle?"

The creatures said nothing, or rather, were unable to speak and instead offered him and his two female companions four rings each. The offer seemed to speak for itself, and instantly Ahote began to bubble with visible anticipation.

It was anticipation until he had actually tossed the rings. Ahote had never struggled with accuracy in the commonplace, as it was a trait most mages picked up after time anyway, but the game seemed to make him think differently. He was inspired until the second ring had missed the golden bottle before spiraling into irritation and then into disbelief. No matter how hard he focused, he could never seem to land on his target.

Ahote wore a suppressed look of disbelief on his complexion, his face contorting and brows screwing together in an attempt to not look visibly malicious at the obvious scam of it all. He forced a smile before looking back to Stiletto and The Black Cat, "You both have good accuracy. This trial will be no trouble for you. It will not, I'm sure of it. Especially for Stiletto here."

Aeluri was relieved of her tormentors when Stiletto stepped up and took them out. She couldn’t help but be impressed by the precision with which she shot. Each fairy was taken out with a silent blast, obliterated into tiny fiery pieces. It was with a sick satisfaction that the summoner watched, a wide grin on her face despite her sickened state, and a stark contrast to Jerry’s reaction. His protests were cut off by the death of each fairy. A woeful expression only grew on his face after each shot, and he chastised the two other guild members after it was all done. The pout on his face greatly resembled that of a child who had been denied candy. Aeluri just rolled her eyes and continued down the trail, eager to be done with festivities and sleep her hangover-like symptoms off.

As they arrived at the festival Jericho seemed to take keen interest in a group of beings surrounding a golden bottle. He eagerly pointed at them and was handed four rings, as were the two ladies. The bottle shone brightly in the sunlight as if in a cheery mood just to mock Aeluri. She grumbled grumpily, not wanting to participate. Jerry missed all of his shots, a victim to the magically rigged game. It was easy to tell he was upset by it with a forced smile on his face. The summoner would almost pity him if she were in a better mood.

    “Move aside Jerry,”
she purred, shoving her way to the front. Mismatched eyes glared at the bottle, not intimidated in the slightest by the obvious rigging. This game was an enemy and she had to defeat it. The sooner she did, the sooner she would be home in her room, the dark cave that protected her from light and sound. Aeluri grabbed the first ring from around her arm and held it up. She calculated, then tossed the ring. It bounced off the top of the bottle with a dink! A huff of frustration came from the mage. Another try and she missed again, the ring sliding just off the top of the bottle. A third try and she was becoming angry. The rigging of the game was incredibly unfair. From the shadows cast by her long hair, the summoner called upon Lusa, the spider cat. The tiny creature skittered up her back and appeared on her shoulder. The only part of the cat that was visible was its many red eyes, the tiny orbs staring from the darkness.

Aeluri gave mental commands to the little spidery being. Lusa crawled down from her summoner’s body to the ground. Unbeknownst to the ring toss hosts, she snuck up the counter where the bottle was and hid behind it, her six inch tall body barely visible. Aeluri pulled the oldest trick in the book and pointed in the opposite direction of the golden bottle. “Look!” she gasped at the ring toss hosts, “Those guys at the ring toss across the way are mocking you!” The silent beings whipped around and glared angrily in the other direction. While they were distracted, Aeluri tossed the final ring straight at Lusa. The spider cat caught it in her tiny mouth and placed it gently over the top of the bottle. The ring settled around the bottle neck.

By the time the ring toss hosts had turned back around, Lusa was nowhere to be seen. The creature’s deed had been done so she had returned to her home realm, feeling the same effects as Aeluri after only being there for a few minutes. The silent beings looked confusedly at the summoner, but she gave a casual shrug. “Guess they stopped when you looked. Hey, Jerry, you can have my prize!”

While Stiletto took her turn, Aeluri wandered off towards the food stands. Maybe she could find some filling food or even caffeine to keep her going through this rough day. A sign that said Sausage and Potatoes caught her eye, and she watched a man walk away from the stand with a mouthwateringly delicious looking plate of food. Aeluri stepped towards the line but was cut off by a little boy. The boy stole her spot in line!

A smug little face topped with surprisingly red hair stared up at her. “Ha! Sucks for you lady, I got here first!” he cheered. “My parents are gonna get me whatever food I want and we’re gonna make it summer forever! So you can suck it!” Rage boiled in Aeluri’s stomach. She was not in the mood for little twerps today. Leaning down so she was eye level with the kid, she gave him a fake smile. “You know what buddy, YOU can suck it! I’m having a really shitty day and I don’t have time to deal with dumb kids like you.” With that, she gave his nose a hard flick and shover her way in front of him in line. The kid let out a wail and ran off. Aeluri gave an amused snort. Success!

“Hey!” came a shout from behind her moments later. A man and woman strode towards her swiftly, angry expressions on their faces. Behind them trailed the pesky kid with a grin on his face. “Aw, hell,” Aeluri grumbled.

“Are you the one who budged my kid and flicked his nose?” the man asked. He was wearing red and gold robes and had the same fiery hair as the woman and the kid. A threatening expression lay on his face. “Yeah, so what? You kid was being an ass,” she replied, completely done with dealing with people. She wished she had stayed home that morning. No amount of coffee or alcohol could prepare her for dealing with little twerps and their overprotective parents.

“How dare you! He’s just a kid, he doesn’t know any better,”
the woman cried. “Well, maybe if you were better parents and taught your kid not to be a pain, he would know better,” Aeluri replied, a mocking sweetness to her voice. Rage filled her body. These dumb people were preventing her from obtaining food, the one thing that might get her through the afternoon. “Besides, I’m feeling extra allergic to bullshit today,” she continued, facing the trio with her hands on her hips, “This hot weather is unbearable.”

“So not only are you rude to my kid, you’re one of those summer haters too? I can’t believe this. Someday fire mages like us will make this world feel an eternal summer. Nobody likes the cold and ice. People like you who hate the heat won’t belong. We’re gonna have to teach you a lesson about respecting my son and this lovely warm weather,” the man yelled, advancing a step towards Aeluri. “Damnit,” she snapped to herself. She was about to get into a fight with two fiery fools while magically incapacitated and with no backup. Her day seemed to be on its way to worse.

After blasting the fairies into puffs of flame over Jericho's futile protests, Stiletto made her way to the ring toss booth to try her hand at the game. The objective was to land four plastic rings on four bottles and the overall goal was to try and ring the golden bottle to win a prize. Stiletto could do that without too much effort. She casually walked up to the rings, gathered them in her left hand, and then sidled up to the booth, where she surveyed the field before her.

The bottles were neatly lined up in five rows of five and the golden bottle was in the middle of them all, sticking out from the sea of green, red, blue, and yellow bottles. The golden bottle would win this, but Stiletto first wanted to do a practice throw, so she aimed at a blue bottle on the second row and threw the red ring in her hand in a smooth underhand motion. It landed on the neck and fell right down. Next was a slightly more challenging throw to a green bottle in the fourth row, the second-to-last bottle in that row. Stiletto repeated the gentle throwing motion and watched as the green ring she tossed glided through the air and landed right on the neck of the bottle, then fell down around the base.

With her first two throws successful, the blonde then aimed for the golden bottle in the center of the third row. It looked like it was challenging her to ring it and that was what she would do. Shuffling the rings in her hand so that the gold ring would be saved for last, Stiletto took the red ring into her right hand, focused for a moment, then threw the ring in the same underhand motion she had been using for the past two throws. Once again the ring flew in a gentle arc and rung the neck of the bottle, but wobbled back and forth and eventually flung itself off, hitting the right side of the booth. Stiletto frowned.

Stiletto took a minute to refocus, steadied herself, and used a different throwing technique. Instead of using an underhand throw, she instead flicked her wrist to launch the gold ring at the golden bottle. The blonde watched it soar through the air in a flat arc and ring the neck of the bottle. Then the waiting began.

The gold ring wobbled back and forth and even jumped diagonally a couple of times, threatening to leap off the bottle and onto the ground. Stiletto felt something approximating hope as its frantic movement began to slow down and the ring threatened to stop moving and fall. Her hopes were soon put on hold as the violent movement began anew and the golden bottle appeared as if it would not be defeated. After four more diagonal leaps and a lot of spinning the ring finally fell down onto the bottle and victory was hers.

Stiletto walked over to the booth to claim her prize, which was a circular mask with a red half and a white half. It also featured an odd eye shape and a smile permanently plastered onto its face. She tried it on for kicks and grins and found that it fit surprisingly well... it hid her face and did not bob up and down as she moved. The satisfied blonde carried her prize away from the booth as she began to look for The Black Cat... she had left no prints, she had used her ability to be just another face in the crowd, and she would not appear on any electronic surveillance equipment the carnival had thanks to another special ability, so she had very little fear of being apprehended by waiting authorities.

Her dark-haired guildmate was not faring so well earlier and the blonde felt a measure of concern for The Black Cat. As Stiletto walked away from the carnival and found her guildmate a fair distance away, her concerns were justified. She spotted her guildmate unable to move while being menaced by two mages who looked like they could use fire. They were rambling on and on about how summer would come to dominate all the seasons and about how they would teach The Black Cat a lesson for harassing their child, a redheaded boy that practically screamed obnoxious.

Stiletto calmly looked around and did not see any witnesses other than the three who were menacing her guildmate. That was good because the blonde did her best work away from prying eyes. Donning the mask that she had won, Stiletto's first course of action was to silence the child without killing them. If the child got away he could twist the story and bring authorities down on them, so keeping him from getting away was imperative. She had just the idea to keep him from alerting anyone.

Stiletto calmly aimed and fired a Stun Burst that kept the child from moving, then used a Reaper's Sprint to silently close the distance with him. Once she was close she punched him in the back of the head for a non-lethal knockout. His surprised parents quickly turned away from The Black Cat to face her.

"Who the Hell are you? Why are you attacking our child? You're with that awful dark-haired person! I KNOW YOU ARE!" The woman of the pair snapped angrily as she strode towards the masked Stiletto to deal with the masked interloper interrupting their rant session. Stiletto strode forward to meet the angered opponent and ducked the sucker punch the woman threw. The mage retaliated with a Roundhouse Kick that hit the woman in the head followed by a Palm Thrust to the chest that knocked the woman down and sent her rolling back onto the ground, where she tried to get up for a moment before passing out. The man's fury reached its peak and he focused fire magic into his hands.

"You hurt my wife and my son! I'm going to roast you alive and have fun doing it!" The man taunted. Stiletto kept quiet as she used a Dash Punch to catch him off guard and slug him in the face at the end of the "flash step." Surprisingly the man stayed on his feet after the punch and headbutted her in the face, then grabbed her by the shoulders and gave her another headbutt that knocked her off her feet. The angry man smiled as Stiletto looked at her shirt, the shoulders of which had been burned away.

"I'm going to enjoy roasting you and your little friend alive!" He taunted. Stiletto remained calm and aimed for the man's nether regions as he strode towards her, then shaped her right hand into a gun and fired a Rubber Bullet shot that hit him between the legs. He screamed a high-pitched scream of pain and fell to his knees while holding himself. Stiletto used the chance to stand up and perform another Dash Punch that struck the hurting man in the face and launched him backwards, knocking him out when he hit the ground.

The masked blonde turned to The Black Cat and walked over to her.

"Problem Two solved." Stiletto spoke to her colleague.

Ahote seemed completely impressed by how The Black Cat was easily able to triumph over the bottle game. A smile brewed over his complexion in a triumphant satisfaction although he was completely aware of her mettling. It was only expected that she would succeed—Ahote couldn't recall a time when she wouldn't. He also couldn't recall a time when he felt as surprised as he was when he was given a humongous fluffy pink dragon in Aeluri's stead. From the way his expression glowed, he was completely enamored by it.

The necromancer was so enamored by it that he didn't even notice The Black Cat or Stiletto wander off and start a commotion with other folks in the festival. He only gingerly held it with both hands and stared at it with unblinking awe and bewilderment. This prize was certainly for children and wasn't something he'd ever hope to have himself, but it was something given to him from Aeluri, so he felt almost obligated to keep it somewhere hidden and away from judgemental eyes. This fluffy pink dragon embodied the festive spirit of midsummer festivals and he was certain that he disliked it. The prize, anyway.

"Stiletto, Kitty." Ahote called to them, but no one answered. It wasn't until this uncanny realization that he turned around and found neither of them by his side like they were just a minute ago. Instead of panicking, he sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose in weary displeasure. He could only imagine what sort of commotion they might stir in their separation—even more for The Black Cat, who seemed as dreadful as he felt himself. The only difference is that he was less likely to lash out than she was.

Ahote mulled over this inconvenience for several seconds until a heavy, dull weight tapped his shoulder. He pulled away from his face and peered over to find a gigantic man-monster hovering over him. This did not surprise him, as he had seen many monsters in his lifetime, and few were as peaceful as this one.

The brown-haired necromancer sighed curiously, "What is it?" he asked with weary undertones. The massive man-monster pointed to his booth, and then offered him a hammer much smaller than himself.

Ahote was quick to connect the dots. "You want me to play?"
    The beast nodded.
    "Give me the hammer."

So there they were—Ahote and the man-monster. It watched Ahote attentively as he prepared to strike the plate, in very stoic silence. Despite his lean appearance, Ahote had a lot of strength for basic things such as this. And yet, no matter how hard he struck, it could never quite reach the top. Weary and haggard from the midsummer sunshine, Ahote felt less and less wanting to even stay in the festival and was beginning to realize that most of these booths were scams and less dreamy than he expected.

So this was the predicament, apparently. Brute force wasn't going to solve the problem, so it would appear that mettling as The Black Cat did would have to be his alternative. And mettle he did.

In his final strike, the power of Thunder Demons embued his arms. No one would ever be able to notice the flicker of electricity engulfing his limbs. The hammer slammed onto the plate, and the metal ball kissed the very top of stand. Ahote, with satisfaction, had won, and his prize for doing so was a stuffed pixie similar to that which they encountered earlier.

Now, he had two stuffed animals that he didn't know what to do with. He had wondered if Stiletto had gotten one yet, and resolved to give it to her if she didn't when he found her. There was only one predicament left.

    "Where are they. . .?"
