    Jin Suzuka

Here the two were, preparing to spar. The black-haired man had never done that before. “Spar,” that is. Was it not too dangerous? Couldn’t he hurt the other person in a way they might not recover? The man had an affinity for nothing, will eventually return to nothing, and uses his magic to return others to nothing. So why would he ever do such a thing as “spar?” However, something drew the silent man to do so - spar, that is. It was just such a fascinating idea on the surface level, fighting without the intent to apprehend someone. His father told him to never fight others pointlessly, as fighting without a cause was comparable to committing a sin. Of course, this was coming from a priest, just as the black-haired man was growing up. He hadn’t settled on being a priest because he thought that the profession was too small in magnitude. It couldn’t change the world as he wanted to - or at least, as much as he knew was impossible to do. Of course the man - Jin Suzuka - wasn’t trying to change the world… He just wanted to do his part. Regardless, this was well outside of his grounds as a priest, so today he had to shed that title for a little while, despite how he was dressed.

Of course, Jin was dressed in his normal casual attire, if one could call it that. His priest’s garb, the long black cloak he normally wore as custom for the priests in his family. It covered his hands and extended a little past, but not enough to restrict movement. The same could be said for his legs, and the only thing resembling his actual profession was the pendant around his neck, the Rune Knights’ emblem. This was tucked under his shirt as per the norm, as his position when off the job was better kept a secret, to not unnaturally intimidate anyone. He could pull it out any time he wanted, but now wasn’t one of those times. Now he was just - ah yes, he was sparring. Why was he doing that again?

It was 2 days ago, Jin was challenged by the man who stood across from him. It was almost out of nowhere, but in a lazy sense. The man’s demeanor put it forth in that way, at least. Jin got that the man didn’t really care enough about the sparring match to ask for it without that much laziness and lack of care, but he cared about it enough to ask it in the first place. Maybe that was why the priest accepted his challenge. The man across from him was stronger than he, so it wasn’t because of confidence in victory. Jin knew right away - he was outclassed in raw strength, and in magical strength. His opponent’s aura was larger than his own, and Jin wasn’t one to casually fight those he knew he had a high chance of losing against. Who would want to lose? So then, why did he say yes to this challenge? Was it because of some external force that was controlling his actions? Forcing him to say yes to a challenge that ultimately meant nothing at least, and could cost one of them their lives at most? Who knows? All of these questions meant nothing, just as this sparring match meant nothing. And as much as Jin could be working now, something told him that he - he WANTED to go through with this. So he stood there now, ready.

”My magic is not used casually, like in a simple spar. I delete things, physically and spiritually. They no longer exist when they get struck by my spells. I will probably not be using my spells often, just so you know. I don’t want to hurt anyone anymore than necessary - especially not a fellow Knight.”

Jin stood still, completely motionless aside from his hair and cloak blowing slightly in the wind. However his expression said nothing other than that he was ready. Even if he wouldn’t move a single muscle, he was ready for his opponent to start their friendly spar. He was giving his fellow Rune Knight the first move.

Ah yes, sparring! It was one of the few common practices in the Rune Knights that Chiyuki actually enjoyed, although he didn't quite clearly express it. It was the sort of thing that he looked forward to and used to motivate himself when brooding at his desk all day or feeling the soles of his feet grow tender after patrolling for too long. The rawness of men and women striking one another in combat with only mild concern for their well being was absolutely exhilerating to the redhead and marked one of the only times he was visibly cheeky. Of course, it wasn't a daily routine but happened often enough for him to expect it routinely.

Chiyuki was so pleased by these trials and sparrings that he quickly became a favorite for his superiors to select for them, and was even quicker to garner a title of his own among his peers—The Red Demon. Chiyuki had defeated every officer that he was put up against in both physical and magical combat, always reigning the winner swiftly and without a doubt. He never made it a competition and never tried to, but every other officer ended up competing among themselves to see who would be the first to defeat him and many had given up quickly, so they ended up competing to see who'd last the longest against him instead. It had escalated to even betting on people for some tangible prize or bragging rights—Chiyuki was blissfully unaware of his reputation among the Combat Corps.

So today's match would be a magical trial (allowing the use of magic, that is) and his opponent would be Recruit Jin Suzuka. Chiyuki reckoned that he was in the Combat Corps but didn't pay enough individual attention to others to know for sure, and both the Combat Corps and Special Operations were so equally competent and skilled that they were only barely distinguishable—so equal that perhaps every member of both groups could switch places for a day and complete their tasks with almost equal precision and tact.

Mister Suzuka? Well, Chiyuki couldn't be so sure about his corps so he certainly knew nothing about the man himself. In fact, he had never even spoken to him until two days ago. It was then that he invited the seemingly recluse man to spar with him today. He didn't invite him to make a show out of their spar or to boost his own ego but needed to replace Private Hoggins who was supposed to be his partner but reported in ill the same day. Everyone else who participated in the spars would already be paired up and thus set him out to seek another partner, who just happened to be Mister Suzuka.

Today in Era was a cloudy one, not a single ray of sunshine breaking through the salt-and-pepper colored clouds that blanketed the sky from pole to pole. It was somewhat dim outside as a result and akin to a gloomy, rainy day, but the Rune Knight HQ thought differently. The match was held in front of the HQ where the widest field was, without obstructions or hazards. It was completely flat and the ideal place for trials of combat. Men and women gathered around the two partners, absolutely mad with excitement. There was wolfish roars rising and falling, doggish whistling, and it was overall like beligerrent sports fan crowding over a television watching some big sports event.

"Kick his ass, Suzuka!" one man hooted from the crowd.

"Like this guy is gonna beat the champ! Get out of here!"

"Thousand jewels—no—three thousand jewels on the private!"

The crowd was bursting with these sorts of comments, and while the sergeants who were faciliating the matches demanded there be calm and stillness, they were all equally excited to see the brawls. The Combat Corps was always easily excited, and this was made obvious when many of the receptionists and "spec ops" fellows glowered at them like looking at some bugs from inside HQ. Finally, one sergeant, a slimy looking man whose skin always felt sweaty and was overall rather lean, spoke loudly over the noise, "Allllright, allllright! Settle down, knights! You know how it goes, the first man down or surrenders loses!" he shouted, but many of the knights continued to mumble over him. Chiyuki was completely unaware of his speaking and continued to stretch.

The redhead was wearing his black uniform, the simplest and most modest of them all, and only removed his gloves in preparation of the trial. Mister Suzuka started saying something, and Chiyuki only smiled wildly, "Yeah, well, stay out of practice too long and you won't be any good when we actually need it, ya know?" he scoffed cheekily. It wasn't from a place of confidence, arrogance, or even mocking Mister Suzuka. It was an honest jest, but the air of the man had been so completely different from his usual lackadaisical one that it could easily be taken as taunting. In the simplest terms to explain this difference, when Chiyuki was not using his magic, he was tired and listless, but when using it, was completely energized and enthusiastic!

The sergeant glared to both of the partners in a short pause before raising his empty palm. The crowd looked at the two eagerly, and once assessing both of their readiness, the hand fell abruptly. "Begin!"

Chiyuki dashed forward with such incredible speed that a trail of dust followed behind him. He had pracitcally thrown himself at that speed—his toes only scraped the ground—and would appear just before Mister Suzuka with a bare fist beginning to try to roll into his stomach in an uppercut. It held such a force that one could see the veins in his hands bulge and was overall a bold move.

    Jin Suzuka

The man with the ponytail was listening intently to those around him. This was a new experience for him, and clearly not anything new to his opponent. His opponent was regarded as a "champ," so he must be in some way more powerful than Jin first took him to be, be it with strategy or with raw abilities. If it was simply his nature as an A rank mage that made him such a "champ," Jin could easily work around it. A gap in ability would be more helpful for him, if anything. Underestimating an opponent was always one's fatal flaw, especially if they had the power advantage. But now that idea had to slightly be thrown away in Jin's eyes. The priest / knight began to rethink his strategy. He didn't have much pride on the line, nor did he really care about the victory, however he - just as most other humans - still had a desire to win. No one wants to lose. It's just that, with Jin, he wouldn't really mind if he did.

The crowd was getting very loud, but they were silenced - or at least close to it, as the man could still hear faint mumbling and murmuring as the other knights and random civilians made bets on the two men - as a stout man, probably a referee of some sort, came forth and announced the fight's "rules." As he was saying this, Jin shed himself of his cloak, revealing the shirt below it as well as the upper half of his pants, and he gave the cloak to an admiring young woman to hold for the duration of their bout. She seemed quite fixated on Jin for a reason he could only place as admiration, but deep down he knew truly what that woman wanted. Regardless, he didn't want to get his family's priest garb dirty in this little bout, so he gave it to the woman. And he returned to his fearless, stationary position just in time for the adversary of his to say a sort of joke? Whatever it was, Jin wasn't exactly offended by it. In fact, he was more interested than anything else. Why would he encourage him to fight with a way that could erase him from existence?

"Don't think I won't try, Mr. Suzuki. I just said that I don't want to kill you."

Jin felt slightly... Enthusiastic? Why did he feel this way? Sure, enthusiasm was nothing new to the black haired man, but enthusiasm over a fight? Over a sin? Over-

    "Begin!"

Awe. That was all that Jin could manifest as Chiyuki blasted at him. He was merely amazed by the determination of his adversary, and how quick he was to get to the point. But apparently the man hadn't known anything about Jin's magic, just as Jin didn't do his homework on Mr. Suzuki. Because a head on assault wouldn't work against him, no matter how much he amazed Jin. Because he was not the only one on his side. Completely invisible and intangible on the physical plane was an entity that was there to help Jin, the entire source of his magical prowess. And that was what stopped the blow from reaching Jin's face. It didn't care for this little bout of the two males, it didn't care for even Jin's life. All it knew is that Jin was the one who feeds it, and it wanted to stay fed. So, to stay fed, it would protect the priest. That was its entire motivation.

Because of this, an invisible barrier stopped the punch. Well, that is, invisible except at the point of contact. The point of contact between the punch - not a foot away from Jin's face - and the barrier was completely black. No, that wasn't the proper word, more that it was void of color at all. There was nothing there. No light, no air, no gravity, no space, nothing. It was just a barrier that was trying to eat away at the fist contacting it.

"Your hand didn't instantly dissipate. That's unique. I wonder if it's because you're stronger than I?"

That's right, Chiyuki's hand should have disintegrated. Vanished. Completely disappeared as soon as it made contact with the barrier. It should have become just as much "nothing" as the black point of contact it made with the barrier. Regardless, this wasn't time for idle conversation. Jin was fighting, and he was fighting to win. So, he placed a magic circle right below him, preparing a spell for later use. It was a weaker spell, but he would need it for optimal control over the field of battle. Plus, he still had his barrier up to protect him from a frontal assault.

Chiyuki's fists rammed into the transparent barrier as if striking a wall. Well, it felt like a wall but in truth, the redhead wasn't entirely sure just what he was hitting. So he would have to stick another toe into the water just to be sure of its heat.

He struck again, this time with his other fist briefly reeling back next to his waist and thrusting forward to strike the barrier again, bracing himself for his strike to be stopped abruptly. Despite this bracing, he didn't decrease the speed or force in which he struck, a strength that could easily rupture the bones and tissue of the hands if he were to strike, say, a much more powerful wall. But the waters between he and Mister Suzuka were deep and still and he would not drink nor swim in its liquids until he had known just what lurks beneath. He started many battles like this, tinkering around with his opponents until he could make a confident blow. But he was so pumped with adrenaline and excitable during combat that he could easily break some bones and not even realize it until after the fighting had stopped.

The crowd shared a similar adrenaline just by watching the two graze each other with fists and magic, roaring with thunderous cheers. Chiyuki didn't say anything in between his heavy punches, noticing the magic circle appearing just before him but choosing not to reposition himself. Mister Suzuka muttered something but the redhead wasn't paying attention, eager to see just what his second blow would do to the barrier.

    Jin Suzuka

Jin stood there, admiring his opponent whom simply just attempted to punch the invisible barrier again. If anything, he wanted Suzuki to break through his barrier. Not because the man wanted to lose this fight, nor did he want to actually get struck, but he wanted proof that someone could truly overpower him. No one has ever contested his Nothingness before, and so this was once again quite exhilarating to see. The fight itself was passable, but just the fact that Suzuki was contesting him made Jin want to see more. So, he would give him more. Because of this, the priest dashed back, leaving the man there, punching the barrier. If there was any more attacks the barrier could withstand, there would only be one or 2 more punches. So Jin had to make this moment count, and that he would. So once the man was outside of the blast radius, he knew what he had to do. Yes, this was a weaker spell, but it would be a test of his opponent's might. The test that must first be done before he tried all-out, because going all-out could possibly result in Suzuki's erasure. So, the words escaped from the man's lips as the magic circle began to light up.

    "Shatter."

As if to go along with the words, an immense pain went through his body as the creature of the void took a portion of Jin's existence and burst open the magic circle. Jin felt the pain erupt through his body, and his legs began to weaken a little bit, but he remained composed. He didn't want to display to his opponent that he was weak in any way, or had any weaknesses to exploit. However other than the searing pain throughout his body, the magic circle in response to the words emitted from Jin immediately lit up with bright light, and then nothing could be seen. However, what could be seen was the ground within the radius of the not-seen explosion blew apart, seemingly disappearing with no cause. What was behind the scenes was that there was just a large explosion that was invisible to the naked eye, but it wasn't simply just an explosion. This explosion completely erased that which was caught in the blast radius, which was why the ground seemingly vanished. There was a crater, but nothing more than that. No rubble, nothing. It was a perfect semicircle, with no trace of what just happened. It was quite literally as if someone just deleted a part of the earth, with the only evidence of the attack that just occured being the crater itself and the sound of the burst of energy.

And there stood Jin, his barrier was destroyed with the blast, so the burst inconsequentially allowed Suzuki a pass through the barrier, which Jin was completely ready for. He knew that one burst wasn't going to defeat the Red Devil, or whatever his name was, especially since it was one of his weaker spells.

The spell was almost done casting and Chiyuki kept reeling his fists back and striking the wall, watching Mister Suzuka with a wild stare. His eyes were ferocious and sharp like those of wolves on their prey, unmoving and glossy with bloodlust. Compared to the lackadaisical, listless impression he set just moments before their battle, he had become a completely different entity. He glared at Mister Suzuka through his messy, unkempt shock of red hair like a patch of vines hanging from high jungle trees and watched as the red magic circle's light beamed underneath him. The magical pressure of its casting swelled and laid on him like weights, and the windows for escape became smaller and smaller until it was only a paltry sum of time for any wizard. Then suddenly, the space spreading on for over two dozen meters in diameter simply vanished. It looked like someone had finely and precisely, without mistakes, cut a piece of the earth out, and Chiyuki was nowhere to be seen.

It looked like the redhead had vanished with that patch of earth for several seconds. But this wasn't the case! Appearing directly behind Mister Suzuka was a black and viscous figure that outlined the physique of Chiyuki almost identically if it weren't for its pulsating form, bubbling like hot tar and dripping like it, too. "Give me a break!" the sludge crowed, "Why are you holding back? Think I'm weak? Is that it?!" Through the black, bubbling, viscous sludge suddenly protruded one large and toned head full of red hair, and then some fingers and the soles of his shoes. The sludge began to disappear back into his flesh, hiding in his pores and suddenly Chiyuki was there again, so close to Mister Suzuka that his hot breaths could kiss and brush against his skin if he paid enough attention to it.

This sludge was not in fact slude, however. It was slime. A slime so awfully thick and viscous and pulsating with magical energy that it eventually became an organism on its own. Their history was ancient when it came to the magical world, but none of that really mattered at the moment. Chiyuki's history with this slime dated back to his childhood, and ever since his encounter, it has stuck itself and lived within the pores of his body. He was able to utilize it well and it served as a perfect defense mechanism. So, combined with his Insatiable Hunger, it was an excellent offense-defense strategy.

"Don't cast half-assed spells on me!" His voice became clearer now that the slime had disappeared, and he began to move his arms in an attempt to wrap them around Jin's body. One had went for his neck and the other his waist. The speed was incredible and his relocation behind him mimicking an equally mighty speed. After all, both had been some of his most powerful spells at his disposal, and if this chokehold would land—and at this position he was sure it would—Mister Suzuka would be rendered immobile and somewhat defenseless.
