but all i have is...
duct tape, paper clips, and a broken shoestring
Eversum let out a sigh as she reclined back into the park bench, her violet eyes fixated on the orange-stained sky above. She was still dressed in the same white dress as earlier in the day, the same period she was evicted from her studio apart. It wasn’t due to a lack of funds or bad mannerisms, but due to a simple misunderstanding. As she thought back to what happened only a few hours prior, the crystallized lifeform struggled to keep her cool. The concerned look from her landlady melted any semblance of indignant resistance she harbored. And no matter how much she attempted to elaborate, the middle-aged woman was set in her decision. It was even worse seeing as the woman sincerely believed doing so would be the best for Eversum, so there was no real reason to hate her. After all, the landlady had only ever been benevolent to Eversum, allowing her to live as a tenant despite her lack of identification. It was thanks to her that the young woman was allowed to acclimate to human culture in the first place.
And truly, the years spent in Talonia had been absolutely wonderful. Before then, all the record could do was wander around aimlessly and hope she came across some people on the way. It was a quiet, stress-free way to live, but it wasn’t something Eversum was rearing to return back to. Instead, her one-room apartment with its soft sheets, elegant decorations, and many books was the place she wished to call home. But clearly, that was lost to her the moment she was forcefully removed. And now all she had to show for it was a leather-bound suitcase full of as many of her belongings as possible-- most of her books were hastily pawned off due to lack of space. Her apartment had been wiped clean of any signs of Eversum having lived there, and now the only question was “what’s next”.
However, when forced to contemplate the future, the violet haired woman fell deeper into melancholy. Even before the whole eviction fiasco, she hadn’t been in the most secure place in the world. She spent hours everyday job hunting, but it’s hard to find something decent when you lacked any qualifications. Eversum had started working part-time during night hours to help pay rent, but there was a limit to how sustainable that was. Her initial amount of funds was high, hence why she was able to hold out so long. But nowadays even that was running dry, forcing Eversum to make all sorts of cuts to living expenses. Ironically, that was the thing that ended up getting her evicted in the end.
The violet haired woman let out a strained sigh, grabbing her briefcase before getting to her feet. She only had a limited amount of time to figure things out, and she couldn’t spend the whole time wallowing about. However, no matter how much she tried, the nagging feeling of looming dread never faded. Typically, Eversum could improve her mood to some degree by thinking about ice cream, sunshine, and kittens, but the current conundrum was far too dire for that. But it wasn’t like she could seriously contemplate her future when she was busy mulling over the past, so the woman opted to take a brief stroll to clear her mind. The scenery of Talonia’s Solemn Park, while the sun was setting, was picturesque, and there wasn’t anyone around either. That meant that Eversum could be alone with just her thoughts as she enjoyed the view.
And as the crystalline lifeform began walking, she began to enjoy the effects right away. Seeing the usually bustling park in its silent beauty worked well to calm her anxious heart. But it was then that a snapping sound echoed from a nearby group of shrubbery. Eversum turned to investigate the sound, but couldn’t actually spot anything. It was mysterious, it wasn’t like the sound was made by nothing at all. She’d expected to at least catch a glance of a furry critter scurrying away. However, it was then she realized just how quiet the park was. Her heart tightened as she began desperately searching for any life other than herself: a squirrel, birds chirping, even a person.
In a twisted sort of way, Eversum soon found exactly what she was looking for. Actually, no, something like that couldn’t be living. Sharp, white bones jutting out of its knarled flesh, pupilless eyes, and that rotting stench. It bore the basic appearance of some wolf, but its mangy patches of black fur, mangled skin, and jittery way of moving suggested otherwise. Why and how such an abomination came to appear in such a populated part of town was unknown to Eversum-- it didn’t even have a speck of blood on it. However, what she did know was that she needed to get out of there.
Before the monster could take another irregular stride towards the young woman, her suitcase had already flown out of her hand. As it slammed the wolf-like creature’s face, she turned and ran away as fast as possible. Holding up the skirt of her dress, Eversum couldn’t help but hear the sound of distorted growling growing nearer-- and it wouldn’t be long until it was right on top of her. She clenched her teeth as she tried to pick up her speed, desperately holding back any tears. But it was then that a dull blow hit her directly in the back, sending her tumbling to the pavement. Even after being body-slammed by the monstrosity, Eversum attempted to get moving again. But it was clear that its jagged teeth would find their way to her flesh before she had the chance.
What was there to do in this kind of situation? Eversum was about to be torn limb from limb-- what could she do? Scream? Cry for help? She’d be done for the moment they arrived, so what…?!
The mangled abomination lunged for Eversum, the woman thrusting her hand outwards in a hopeless show of resistance. However, an ambiguous, multi-colored light consolidated in her palm, exploding outwards in a blinding blast of radiance. By the time the crystalline lifeform’s vision recovered, the only traces of the creature remaining were pitch-black scorch marks and the nauseating smell of burnt flesh.
“Wh-What the-?!” Eversum suddenly felt all the strength drain from her body, leaving her to weakly plop onto the ground. No matter how much she fought to retain her consciousness, her disarrayed senses, the disgusting stench in the air, the sudden relief, all of them led her to black out...
